EFFECT OF NPS COMPOUND AND UREA FERTILIZER RATES ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) ON CAMBISOLS AND VERTISOLS OF ENDERTA, NORTHERN ETHIOPIA

Experiments were carried out to evaluate effects of NPS and urea on bread wheat performance on Vertisols and Cambisols at three farmer’s fields as replications at Shibta, Enderta during 2017 rainy season using randomized complete block design (RCBD), comprised of combinations 0, 100, 150 and 200 kg/ha NPS) and 0, 50,100 and 150 kg/ha urea. Composite soil samples were also collected and analyzed. Yield and its components’ data were collected and statistically analyzed. Urea and NPS interaction effects were not significantly different for all crop parameters. NPS Main effect showed significant differences (P≤0.001) on plant height, spike length, effective tillering, straw and grain yield. However, urea main effects indicated significant differences (P≤0.05) on plant height, spike length and effective tillering except on grain and straw yield. The main effects of NPS showed significantly different (P = 0.001) with highest yield at 200 kg NPS/ha (2856.3 kg/ha) on Vertisols but the main effect of urea was not significant with higher yield (2464.6 kg/ha) at 50 kg urea/ha on this soil. The main effects of NPS showed significantly different (P = 0.001) highest yield at 150 kg NPS/ha (3602.1kg/ha) on Cambisols but the main effect of urea was not significant with higher yield (3160.kg/ha) at 150 kg urea/ha on this soil. Partial budget analysis showed highest and profitable yields at 150 kg NPS/ha with 50 kg/ha urea for Cambisols and 100kg NPS/ha for Vertisols. These rates could be recommended for the respective soils of the experimental and other similar areas, in Tigray.
