To investigate the epidemiological trait of intestinal diseases of animals caused by thermophilic Campylobacter spp., isolation of etiological agent was carried out. Isolated Campylobacter spp. were biotyped, serotyped and the susceptibility of the isolates to antimicrobial agents were examined. Isolation rates of Campylobacter spp. from 649 fecal materials of 208 cattle, 300 pigs and 141 chickens were 25.5 %, 23.7 % and 38.3 %, respectively. The majority of the 130 isolates of C jejuni was classified as biotype I (50.6 %) and biotype II (34.6 %). Most of the 46 isolates of C coli were biotype I (71.7 %). Isolated C jejuni strains showed 14 different serotype, and serotype 4, 26, 36 were most frequent. Isolated C coli strains showed 5 different serotype and serotype 31 and 21 were relatively common. Nine strains of Yersinia species isolated from pigs and dogs in Korea, comprising 5 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica, 2 strains of Y. kristensenii and each strain of Y. pseudo-tuberculosis and Y. intermedia, were examined for the presence of virulence-associated plasmids, calcium dependency and provocation of guinea pig conjunctivitis (Sereny test). Three strains of Y. enterocolitica isolated from pigs were positive in calcium dependency and harbored one plasmid of about 45 megadalton, but negative in Sereny test

The present study was done to demonstrate ADV antigens in frozen and paraffin sections from ADV-infected pigs and cell cultures by using of the IGS method. Tissue specimens from 3 young pigs infected with ADV-phylaxia strain and of 2 healthy pigs were used. Fibroblastic cells originated from pig brain and BHK cells were grown and confluent monolayers were infected with the virus. Two monoclonal antibodies and a specific hyperimmune serum to ADV were used as the source of primary antibodies for both the IGS and immunoperoxidase methods. Application of the IGS method yielded a black fine granular reaction in positive areas, and the results were superior to those obtained using the immuno-peroxidase technique for all cases tested. The IGS method might be useful in the detection of various viral antigens in tissue sections

The In vitro drug susceptibility of 83 strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica recoverd from Korean pigs with atrophic rhinitis was investigated by the use of disk diffusion method. The majority of the organisms were highly resistant in order of prevalence to penicillin (98.7%), ampicillin(91.5%), streptomycin (90.3%), triple sulfa (83.1%), and trimethoprim/sulfamet-hoxazole (70.7%) while none of them were resistant to gentamicin, only 3.6% to colistin, chloramphenicol and kanamycin and 6.0% to tetracycline. The percentage of the organism resistant to bicozamycin, cephalothin and neomycin were 34.9%, 34.1% and 18.4%, respectively. A high prevalence of multiple drug resistance was observed and the 3 most common resistant patterns among 35 patterns noted were Am Pc Sm Sss Sxt(26.5%), Am Cf Pc Sm Sss Sxt(12%) and Am Bm Pc Sm Sss Sxt(9.6%) patterns

Isolation of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus from piglets suffering from exudative epidermitis and healthy pigs was performed, and some properties of the isolates were examined. Twenty-six litters of exudative epidermitis observed in the field were sucking piglets with ages ranging from 1 to 5 weeks and most (73.1%) of these cases occurred in piglets between 2 and 3 weeks of age. Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus was isolated from 192 (38.9%) of 494 healthy pigs. The rate of isolation of these organism from healthy pigs was found to vary greatly among farms at an isolation rate of 33.3% to 45.5% and this organism was isolated more frequently from sucking piglets below the age of 8 weeks than adult pigs

The bovine serum influencing the growth of swine testicle (ST) cell and the END effect of hog cholera SN test was studied. Bovine whole serum of 16 (76.2%) and 4 (19.0%) samples out of 21 have shown a positive ST cell growth and the END effect, respectively. However, all of 21 (100%) and 8 (38.1%) samples out of 21 serum supernatant fractions, prepared from the bovine whole serum, have shown positive ST cell growth and END effect, respectively

Four colostrum-deprived, 1 day old pigs were orally infected with the porcine enterovirus isolated in Korea. Two of the pigs were treated with dexamethasone (5mg/kg/day) for 3 days. The others as control were infected with porcine enterovirus only. The treated, infected pigs developed ataxia at 3 postinoculation days, neural disorders at 8 postinoculation days, 1 week earlier than those of the controls. Histopathological examination of both the treated and the control pigs revealed non-purulent polioencephalomyelitis consisting of neuronal degeneration, perivascular cuffing, meningeal infiltration, focal and diffuse gliosis. The severity of the histopathological lesions in the treated pigs was more prominent than those of the controls
