Clinicopathological studies on the subclinical fascioliasis in the Korean native cows in Chonnam area.
1989
Lee C.G. | Wee S.H. | Park S.J.
Fecal samples were taken from 402 cows in Posung, Chonnam which was designated as a place for Korean native cattle breeding. Prevalence of internal parasitisms were determined by the fecal examinations using the floatation and sedimentation procedures. 62.9 % of the cows were found as positive cases with excretion of the eggs of Fasciola hepatica in the fecal specimens. Of those infected with F. hepatica 97 cows free of other pathogenic intestinal parasites were chosen for albendazole treatment. Albendazole tablets (10mg/Kg) were administered to the cows twice at the interval of 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected via jugular vein prior to the first treatment, four weeks after the first treatment and four weeks after the second treatment, respectively. At the same time fecal samples were collected for parasitological examinations by sedimentation methods. The mean pretreatment count was 44 fluke eggs per gram of feces, which compared with 27 epg and 17 epg four weeks after the first and second treatment, respectively. Most of the hematological and biochemical values fluctuated within the normal ranges during the experiment. Eosinophil counts were high initially, decreased after the first treatment and thereafter remained steady. The opposite was the case with aspartate and alanine aminotransferases.

Fascioliasis is an importantparasitic disease caused by the liver flukeFasciola gigantica in Malaysia. Theinfestation of liver fluke in ruminants;cattle, sheep, goats and buffaloes can resultin economic losses to the country mainlydue to the drop in livestock production, reduction in growth rate, condemnationof liver, reduction in draught power andhigh usage of anthelmintics. This paperdescribes a case of liver fluke infestationin a two year old male buffalo that waseventually slaughtered. The buffalowas reported to be emaciated and wasreared in an oil palm plantation for useas draught power in buffalo-drawn cartsloaded with oil palm bunches; alongwith 18 other buffaloes of various ages.Previously, there were two cases of buffalodeaths from the same herd. The organand faecal samples were sent to KuantanRegional Veterinary Laboratory (RVL)for diagnostic work up. The receivedsamples were then sent to parasitology, histopathology and bacteriology sectionsfor laboratory analysis and confirmationon the pathogens. The bacteriology resultshowed Escherichia coli isolated in allinternal organs. Presence of adult flukes(Fasciola gigantica) were observed inthe bile duct of the liver through grossexamination and also histopathologicalevaluation and supported by the positiveresult of Fasciola ova via sedimentationtest conducted from the faecal sample, thusjustifying the final diagnosis as severe liverfluke infestation leading to emaciation andsimultaneously having colibacillosis.

Research on determination of changes of morphological and biochemical blood indexes of sheep with fasciolosis after application of the drug Klozantsid (menizol 20%, produced in the Republic of Belarus) was carried out. The research realized in the conditions of the Scientific and Research Institute of Applied Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology of the Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine. In course of the experiment there were used sheep of Romanovskaya breed at the age from 1,5 till 5 years which were spontaneously infected with fasciola. The experimental animals were administrated with the examined antihelminthic preparation. It was found out that after administration of the preparation there was stated the restoration of a level of erythrocytes, haemoglobin, leukocytes, enzymes, proteins and other blood indexes. Klozantsid did not render toxic influence on studied animals.

Development of highly efficient antigens for an early immunodiagnosis of cattle fascioliasis (Fasciola hepatica) and studying of its main properties was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. Received in result of the experiment antigens possessed high specificity and were suitable for use in fascioliasis immunodiagnostics. Research results showed that use of indirect fluorescent (IFA) test and immunodiffusion test for fasciolasis immunodiagnostics of cattle excludes false positive results caused by tuberculosis and hypodermotosis (p less than 0,001).

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus after fasciolosis invasion of cattle for the biochemical diagnostics of liver pathologies there was composed a hepatospecific metabolic profile of blood serum of cattle into which there were included several enzymes (alanine aminotransferase; aspartate aminotransferase; gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase; alkaline phosphatase; and cholinesterase), content of total albumin, serum albumin, total cholesterin and total bilirubin, as well as colloid tests (thymol turbidity test and test for apoliproteins). There was revealed a intrahepatic cholestasis developed during fasciolosis infestation, as well as dysproteinemia as a compensatory mechanism of liver proteinsyntetic function.
