Protein requirements of growing pups fed practical dry-type diets containing mixed-protein sources
1990
Case, L.P. | Czarnecki-Maulden, G.L.
The protein requirement of Pointer pups fed practical diets was assessed in 3 experiments. Eight-week-old pups required 25.2% protein when fed a combination of corn gluten meal, soybean meal, and meat and bone meal for 2 weeks. However, when a poor-quality poultry by-product meal was substituted for some of the corn gluten meal and meat and bone meal, the requirement increased to 27.5%. This increased requirement was explained by decreased digestibility of the poultry by-product meal diet. Pups fed each of the diets required 18% digestible protein to maximize growth rate. Sixteen-week-old pups were more efficient at utilizing the experimental diets, requiring only 23% crude protein (17.2% digestible protein) to maximize growth rate.

1993

Current medical management of dogs with Portosystemic shunt (PSS) includes dietary protein restriction. After establishment of baseline values, 32 dogs underwent portosystemic anastomosis to induce PSS. They were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments, and given 11 or 24% crude protein (CP); 20% of the protein was derived from branched chain or aromatic amino acids. The apparent digestibility of CP and of total digestible energy were not affected by PSS. The apparent digestibility of fat decreased from 92% to 85% in dogs with PSS (P < 0.01). Across all diets, the apparent dietary protein requirement (ADPR) was 2.07 g of CP/kg of body weight/d in clinically normal dogs and 2.11 g of CP/kg/d after PSS. Dietary amino acid composition had no effect on ADPR. The ADPR for dogs fed the 11% protein diets was 1.69 g of CP/kg/d in clinically normal dogs and 1.62 g of CP/kg/d after PSS, whereas the ADPR in dogs fed the 24% protein diets was 3.94 g of CP/kg/d before PSS and 3.31 g of CP/kg/d after PSS. Serum total protein, urea nitrogen, and albumin concentrations were lower in dogs with PSS fed the 11% protein diets, compared with those fed the 24% protein diets. We conclude that there is no difference in ADPR in dogs with PSS; however, the low protein intake of 1.62 g of CP/kg/d appeared inadequate to maintain normal protein stores. Dietary protein that provides at least 2.1 g of CP/kg/d is recommended for dogs with PSS.

Cost of feed is one of the primary stumbling blocks for goat farming in Malaysia. Stage feeding was introduced as a method to formulate feed at minimum cost based on the requirement of different stages of production to improve overall farm productivity. A study was conducted to evaluate 5 feeding rations formulated based on the requirements of different production stages on Katjang-Boer crossbred. Ration formulated of creep feed (CF) for a period of 101d, starter grower (SG) (70d), grower finisher (GF) (98d), flushing feed (FF) (97d) and maintenance feed (MF) (155d) were compared with commercial feed (CCF and CMF) as control. Results showed a significantly higher (P<0.05 preweaning bodyweight of 12.83 ± 3.61 kg in CF at 101 days of age. Post weaning also achieved significantly higher bodyweight (P<0.05 of 22.20±2.78kg and 31.5±4.67 in SG (223 days) and GF (361 days) of age respectively. Feed cost per kg gain obtain in CF (RM5.68), SG (RM9.03) and GF (RM6.57) were lower compared to CCM of RM6.14, RM10.27 and 12.99 respectively. FF showed a significantly higher (P<0.05) average daily gain (ADG) of 67.01 ± 14.42 g while MF was able to maintain body weight at minimum cost. Stage feeding proved to be able to meet nutritional needs through significantly higher body weight in CF, SG, GF and FF as well as lower feed cost per kg gain rendering it as a more economical option.

Belarus is among regions, where the selenium content in soil, hence, in cereal and other cultures considerably below requirements that leads to insufficiency of this microelements in a diet as the person, and animals. Synthesized in the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Physiology, Biochemistry and Feeding of Agricultural Animals new organic compound of selenium - selenopyran on variety of criteria has no analogues in the world among considerable quantity selenium of containing preparations and favourably differs from all known forms of microelements. Selenopyran, brought in fats and forages, shows antioxidatic the properties which are not conceding traditionally applied in veterinary science and medicine to antioxidants. Arriving in animal body with forage or in the form of injections, selenopyran is capable to play a role of a metabolic regulator. It activates enzymes of antioxidatic body protection, reduces formation new and will neutralize of earlier formed activeproducts of peroxide lipids oxidations, improves functioning of cellular membranes, normalizes metabolism, makes active cellular, humoral and phagocytal immunity links, raises nonspecific resistance and efficiency of animals. Toxicity of selenopyran more low, than at all known organic connections of selenium, and more than in 100 times is less, than at sodium selenit. The data allow to expand possibilities of application of organic selenium and to use it as a preparation raising resistance and body viability at the expense of the patronage of cellular structures from influence of oxidizers and free radicals, to normalize metabolism and to stimulate thus the big additional body weight at animals. The influence of medicine organic selenium on piglet bodies what are behind a growth and development is shown. The results showing the dynamical changes of haematologicals, physiologicals and biochemicals indices under the influence of selenopyran was given.
