Acacia angustissima intoxication of Menz lambs requires two components
2005
Brown, D.L. | Yimegnuhal, A. | McCrabb, G.J.
This study sought to determine if sheep suffer neurological symptoms when fed Acacia angustissima leaves, and whether an equivalent amount of 70% acetone extract would have the same effect. In addition, the study tried to determine if treatment of leaves with 70% acetone would destroy the activity of A. angustissima toxins, and whether extraction with 70% aqueous acetone extract would separate two components of a toxic system. Twenty-five Menz lambs were randomly assigned to one of five treatments (1) A angustissima leaves as half the diet, 2) dried extract (70% aqueous acetone) of the same quantity of leaves, 3) a corresponding amount of residues, 4) a recombination of the dried extract and dried residue, or (5) a control diet containing no A angustissima leaves or extract fractions. All animals fed the leaves and the recombined fractions died or were euthanized when they were observed to be dying of severe neurological derangement. None of the other animals showed any neurological signs of impairement. The results of this study indicate that healthy, well-fed sheep can be poisoned by A angustissima, that the toxins are not destroyed by acetone or oven drying, and that severe neurological intoxication requires two components, which can be separated by acetone extraction.

Afeeding trial was conducted in layers for a period of8 weeks (23-30 weeks old) to evaluate the effect of chromium picolinate supplementation on egg yolk cholesterol and egg chromium content in layers.Atotal of (n=120) layers were randomly distributed in completely randomized design into 4 treatmentgroupseachwith2 replicates of 5chicks.The layers of treatment group T1(control)were provided water without chromiumwhile those of T2,T3andT4were provided water containing 200, 400 and 600 ppb chromium / litre respectively. At the end of feeding trial, six eggs from each replicate, on last three days were used for egg yolk cholesterol and egg chromium studies. The results indicated that the total cholesterol andLDL cholesterol content of eggs were significantly (P0.05) reduced and HDL-cholesterol content significantly increased in 400 and 600 ppb chromium supplemented group of layers. Whereas chromium content of eggs increased with increasing levels of chromium supplementation. It was concluded that organic chromium supplementation up to 600 ppb level through water may be advisable to reduce egg yolk total cholesterol and LDL- cholesterol and improved HDL-cholesterol and egg chromium content.

In order to examine whether iodine supplements may have caused a global decline in sperm concentrations during the past several decades, the synchronicity of the decline in mean sperm counts and the introduction of io-dine supplements was analyzed statistically. A positive correlation between the incidence of thyroid disease and sperm counts has been detected in Europe. In addition, it has been shown that sperm counts began falling around 1965 in the United States, 40years after iodine supplements were introduced. Mean sperm counts before and after 1965 were 111 10 sup(6)/ml and 70 10 sup(6)/ml, respec-tively, in calculations weighted by the number of subjects included in each in-dividual publication. The timing of the declines coincided with the introduc-tion of iodine supplements in the United States, France, and the United King-dom. The implications are that the global decline in sperm concentrations may be caused by iodine intake. Geographical variation in the types of sperm count decline also appears to be present.

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was studied the efficiency of application of national mineral additives (mineral feed additive produced on the basis of dolomitic meal) in rations of milking cows. In course of the study there were analyzed physical and chemical blood indexes; hematological indexes of cows; biochemical blood indexes; mineral composition of blood; natural resistance of cows. As a result of the realized study it was established, that an optimum dose of a dolomitic meal for milking cows during the winter period was 0,3% per dry matter of a diet. There was proved the possibility of increasing of a daily average milk yield of cows on 11,7%, fat and protein content in milk - on 0,04 - 0,06%, as well as lowering of quantity of somatic cells on 13,6%. Application of a national mineral additive rendered the positive influence on blood indices to what that was proved by increasing of erythrocytes (on 10,9%), thrombocytes (on 5,4%), haemoglobin (on 6,5%), crude protein (on 10,6%), and also macro- and trace elements. Introduction of a dolomitic meal into cow diets made it possible to increase the indices of natural resistance of cows on 0,5 - 4,0%.

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was realized a comparative study of peculiar features of influence of combined application of Khelavit preparation and protein-vitamin-mineral feed supplements Khendriks and Spaeta-kontsentrat on health status of cows and quality of obtained cow milk after application of these preparation for the preventive treatment of osteodystrophy. In course of study there were analyzed haematologic and biochemical blood indexes of cows after application of the experimental preparations. Results of physical and chemical indexes of milk were presented. Research results showed that the analyzed protein, vitamin and mineral feed supplements caused the normalization of biochemical blood indexes in comparison with animal of a control group. Besides, application of mentioned above drugs promoted the increasing of veterinary and sanitary quality and technological properties of produced milk.

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was analyzed the influence of inclusion into broiler chickens diets of probiotoc preparation Bifidoflorin zhidkij (liquid) and prediotic veterinary drug Biofon AIL on the natural resistance, hematopoiesis, growth, metabolic function, development and viability of broiler chickens. In course of the study there was analyzed the dynamics of total haemoglobin, total protein of blood serum, albumins and globulins of broiler chickens which were fed with veterinary drugs probiotoc Bifidoflorin zhidkij and prediotic Biofon AIL. Indexes of chicken viability and life weight gain were marked. Research results showed that application of the presented veterinary preparations rendered the growth promoting action, lowering of disease incidence, increasing of chicken viability, increasing of live weight gain and stimulation of metabolic processes in the most intense period of poultry growing. All these factors were expressed in highest degree after the combined application of the probiotic and prebiotic veterinary drugs.

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was analyzed the efficiency of application multi-enzyme preparations (drugs) Ehkozim (contained beta-glucanases; endo-xilanase; cellulose) and Vitazim (contained complex of enzymatic carbohydrases: xylanase; cellulose; beta-glucanases) in diets of lying hens. Vitazim was applied for destruction of complex structures: dietary fibre, protein, starch. Ehkozim was applied for albuminolysis of the main nonstarch polysaccharides of fodders. It was established that application of preparations in feeding of lying hens promoted the increasing of biological value of poultry meat, and prove to be economically expedient. Poultry meat of analyzed samples in accordance with physical, chemical and bacteriological indices, as well as in accordance with biological value and harmlessness was not worse than meat of control samples. As a result of the realized bacteriological research of all experimental samples of meat and internal organs there were not stated microorganisms Е. coli, S. aureus, bacteria of sort Proteus, B. сеreus and sulfate-reducing clostridium, salmonellas.

A technology of application autolysis of fodder yeasts (AFY) for the production of products with higher protein content, digestible aminoacids and other nutritive and biologically active substances in comparison with the standard fodder yeasts (provit) was tested in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus by an example of three groups of swine. Animals of the first (control) group were fed with combined feed SK-26 with addition of 2% of provit. Animals of the second group were fed with combined feed SR-26with addition of 2% of AFY, the third group - with addition 4% of AFY. Provit and AFY were included into combined feed instead of excluded protein components in equivalent number. Research results showed that autolysis of fodder yeasts did not render negative influence on productivity of fattening stores. Average daily weight gain of stores was 637-674 g. Calculation of economic efficiency of combined feeding application of 2 and 4% of AFY showed that application of 2% AFY was more economically profitable
