CT characteristics of normal canine pulmonary arteries and evaluation of optimal contrast delivery methods in CT pulmonary angiography

This study was performed to identify the normal anatomic orientation of pulmonary arteries and to obtain the normal baseline parameters and the optimal contrast material delivery methods of computed tomographic pulmonary angiography (CTPA) on normal beagle dogs. Based on the contrast injection flow rate, the contrast volume, and the administration methods, the experimental groups were divided into 4 groups such as group 1 : 2 ml/s, 3 ml/㎏, and monophasic administration; group 2 : 5 ml/s, 3 ml/㎏, and monophasic administration; group 3 : 5 ml/s, 4 ml/㎏, and monophasic administration; group 4 : 5 ml/s and 2 ml/㎏ in first phase, 0.3 ml/s and 2 ml/㎏ in second phase, as biphasic administration.

This study investigated the protective effects of ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), an extracellular calcium chelator, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which chelates calcium and most metal ions, against carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄)-induced acute hepatotoxicity in mice. Mice were treated with EGTA or EDTA at a dose of 20 (low) or 100 mg/kg (high) subcutaneously 1 h before CCl₄ administration. The mice were fasted and sacrificed 18 h after CCl₄ treatment.

Swine influenza is an acute, infectious respiratory disease caused by type A influenza viruses in pigs. In the previous studies, serological surveys have indicated the presence of H3N2 swine influenza virus (SIV) since 1995 in Korea. And the percentage of the antibody-positive rate was 39.12% in the survey determining the prevalence of H1N1 SIV antibodies in 2002. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the sero-prevalence of SIV regard to the age of the pig and the season between June 2004 and May 2005. In this study, a total of 932 sera were used.

This study was conducted to survey of Ehrlichia (E.) canis and Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi antibodies among clinically healthy German shepherd dogs (116 females and 120 males) using a ELISA kit (SNAP 3Dx; IDEXX Laboratories, USA) in Korea. Whole blood samples are collected from the 236 dogs and are tested to detect E. canis and B. burgdorferi antibodies by using ELISA kit (SNAP 3Dx; IDEXX Laboratories, USA). Confidence interval comparisions revealed that dogs of 4-6 years have higher prevalence with a seropositive result (CI = 0.17 - 0.45) in E. canis than the other age groups but there are no differences among age groups in B. burgdorferi.

Neoheterobothrium hirame (N. hirame) is a large blood-feed gill-worm infecting the highly prized olive flounder. The present study was reported the occurrence and elimination of Neoheterobothrium infection from young cultured oliver founder in the western coast of Korea. Flounder (weight 18-25 g, length 10-15 cm) were obtained from a cultured farm at Taean of Korea at May 2006. A lot of flounder died with serious anemia. We isolated N. hirame from the buccal cavity wall of dead flounder. Adult parasites were 5-15 mm in total length, with 4 pairs of clamps on the pedunculated haptor and isthmus region embedded in host tissue, while immature and sub-adults were identified the attachment to the gill filaments, rakers and arches with the clamps.

Pancreatic pseudocyst is one of the most common pancreatic mass lesions developed following acute or chronic pancreatitis. Two dogs were presented with nonspecific clinical signs such as abdominal pain, vomiting and depression and diagnosed as pancreatic pseudocysts through percutaneous ultrasound-guided aspiration. Pancreatic pseudocyst may contain pancreatic juice, so leads the deteriorate state of patient through pertinent inflammation and autodigestion of pancreas. In this study, the clinical signs and pancreatic lesion were improved after aspiration.

To understand the role of P∧2x/P∧2Y receptor in cortex region of kidney and renal artery, molecular and functional analysis of P∧2x/P∧2Y receptor by pharmacophysiological skill in conventional swine tissues were performed. In functional analysis of P∧2Y receptor for vascular relaxation, 2-methylthio adenosine triphosphate, a strong agonist of P∧2Y receptor, induced relaxation of noradrenaline (NA)-precontracted renal artery in a dose-dependent manner. Strikingly, relaxative effect of ATP, 2-msATP, agonists of P∧2Y receptor, abolished by treatment of reactive blue 2, a putative P∧2Y receptor antagonist.

This study was conducted to investigate the pathogenicity of Paenibacillus (P.) polymyxa JB115 and single oral dose toxicity of culture broth containing β-glucan (CBG-JB115) produced from P. polymyxa JB115 in Sprague-Dawely rats of both sexes for 14 days. After oral administration of P. polymyxa JB115 into rats, we could not find any abnormal clinical signs and variation in the body weight and temperature as compared with control group. We also investigated the acute toxicity of CBG-JB115. As the results, there were no clinical signs and variance in the body weight and temperature related with CBG-JB115 in comparison with the control group.

A total of 114 Salmonella spp. (17.90%) were isolated from 637 fecal swab samples collected in October 2005 and they were from 25 (78.13%) of 32 farms investigated nation-widely in Korea. Salmonella spp. from age group of 30-, 60-, 90-, 120-day olds were 17.61%, 16.98%, 15.72%, and 21.25%, respectively. Nine serovars of Salmonella spp. were identified. The predominant serovars of isolates were S. Typhimurium (including var Copenhagen), S. Agona, S. Derby, and S. Heidelberg by turns. Almost isolates belonged to serogroup B (69.30%).

An eight years old female barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), which bred at the Gwangju Uchi Park Zoo had shown anorexia, depression,. respiratory problem for several weeks after parturition. In necropsy, extensive necrotizing pneumonia was found with severe immunocytes infiltration in the alveolar spaces and bronchioles. Pulmonary pleura were thickened with fibrin and inflammatory cells. Bacteria were isolated from lung and identified as Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (SEZ) by biochemical tests and PCR on sodA and gusA genes, though seeⅠgene was not detected.
