In this study, in the removal of macro (P, S, Na, K, Ca, Mg) and micro (Sb, Ba, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Hg, Mo, Se, Ag, Zn) elements in the effluent of Elazig Wastewater Treatment Plant, the efficiency of Lemna minor L. and Lemna gibba L. has been studied comparatively. For this aim, fronds of these plants have been adapted to the effluent of the treatment plant that feeds pilot scale reactors. The concentrations of elements in fronds harvested during the working period were analyzed by ICP/MS. The analytical results show that Lemna minor L. has a high accumulation potential for P, Sb, Ba, Co, Fe, Pb, Mn, Hg, Ag and Zn while Lemna gibba L. has a high accumulation potential for S, Na, Ca, Mg, Cu, Mo and Se. The results show that Lemna minor L. and Lemna gibba L. can be used as phytoremediators of wastewater.

A newly developed Smart Pouch with enclosed biomaterial (Aloe vera and coconut husk powder) has been experimented for elimination of heavy metals i.e. (Pb2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+) from wastewater. The effect of concentration, pH, temperature, contact duration etc. was investigated using batch experiments which resulted that the Pouch may be accepted for convenient, efficient and low-cost accumulation of several heavy metals simultaneously from waste water. The maximum Pb removal was 99.99%, 93.21% for Cu, and for Ni, it was 91.97% whereas for Zn, 86.41% was obtained and also, the uptake capacity of pouch was quite sensitive towards initial metal concentration in the studied range of 10-200mg/L present in wastewater. The findings were further interpreted by quantum chemical study as theoretical support, various adsorption isotherms, FTIR, SEM, XRD, and physiochemical properties of metal ions to justify the synergized performance of new Pouch. A good correlation was found between experimental methods and theoretical findings.

Rapid development in nanotechnology and incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in wide range of consumer products causing the considerable release of these NPs in the environment, leading concerns for ecosystem safety and plant health. In this study, rice (Oryza sativa) was exposed to AgNPs (0, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 mg L−1) in biochar amended (2 %w/v) and un-amended systems. Exposure of plants to AgNPs alone reduced the root and shoot length, biomass production, chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis related physiological parameters as well as macro-and micronutrients in a dose dependent manner. However, in case of biochar amendment, physiological parameters i.e., net photosynthesis rate, maximum photosynthesis rate, CO2 assimilation, dark respiration and stomatal conductance reduced only 16, 6, 7, 3 and 8%, respectively under AgNPs exposure at 1000 mg L−1 dose. Meanwhile, biochar at all exposure level of AgNPs decreased the bioaccumulation of Ag in rice root and shoot tissues, thus alleviated the phyto-toxic effects of NPs on plant growth. Moreover, results showed that biochar reduced the bioavailability of AgNPs by surface complexation, suppressing dissolution and release of toxic Ag+ ions in the growth medium. The presence of biochar at least decreased 2-fold tissue contents of Ag even at highest AgNPs (1000 mg L−1) concentration. These finding suggested that biochar derived from waste biomass resources can be used effectively to prevent the bioaccumulation and subsequent trophic level transfer of emerging Ag nano-pollutant in the environment.

To better understand the Sb phytoavailability in rice, we studied Sb accumulation in rice (Zhongjiazao-17, widely cultivated in Hunan province) at different growth stages based on adding SbIII and SbV to waterlogged soils in 10, 50 and 100 mg kg−1 treatment levels. Proportional exogenous SbIII and SbV remained in the soil solution after equilibration. In SbIII treatments, the iron plaque (IP) amounts and Sb in rice roots sharply increased from tillering to jointing stages and then reduced at the following stages. However, in SbV treatments, they increased continuously from tillering to maturing stages. The accumulation trends of Sb in straws, ears and grains were consistent in SbIII and SbV treatments, rising from tillering to jointing stages followed with reducing from jointing to flowering stages slightly, and rising again significantly from flowering to maturing stages. The Tfsoil-grain values in all the Sb treatments were low (0.77 × 10−3-5.1 × 10−3), However, when Sb in waterlogged soils were higher than 50 mg kg−1, it could pose human health risk for residents.

The concentration and speciation of heavy metals (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Cr, Pb and Cd) were studied in surface sediment from the Yangtze River(YR)to the East China Sea (ECS) shelf. The results showed that high contents of metals were found in the YR estuary (YRE) and in the nearshore muddy area, while lower concentrations were found in the YR channel and the ECS shelf. However, after standardization, the total content of most heavy metals from the YR showed little change or slightly increased during the transport process from the river to the estuary but decreased significantly outside the estuary, especially in the sediments of the ECS shelf. The residual fraction is the dominant fraction for all the metals, while the oxidizable and reducible fractions are the most important forms of the nonlithogenic fractions. The total amount of heavy metals from the YR to the continental shelf is mainly affected by the filtration of the estuary and the barrier impacts of the coastal current in the ECS. The environmental physicochemical conditions that vary significantly in the turbidity zone greatly influence the associated forms of metals. The metals in the acid-soluble fraction are mostly affected by the pH change in the sediment and the discharge of human activities, while the reducible fraction is significantly affected by the bottom water DO. The oxidizable fraction was affected by oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), primary productivity, as well as OM content. Therefore, with changes in the physicochemical conditions of the environment, the metals have undergone significant changes in their speciation from the YR to the ECS shelf. Various complex effects in the estuary area have not only a large filtration effect on the total amount of metals but also a major impact on the geochemical forms of the metals.

Nowadays, the occurrence of a large volume of plastic litter in oceanic and coastal zones has increased concern about its impacts on marine organisms. The degradation of plastic polymers leads to the formation of smaller fragments at both micro and nano scale (<5 mm and <1 μm respectively). Nanoplastics (NPs), due to their smaller size and high specific surface area can establish colloidal interactions with marine microalgae, therefore potential toxicity can be led. . To assess this hypothesis, the aim of the present study is to examine the behaviour of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) of different sizes (50 and 100 nm) in marine water and their possible effects at different physiological and cellular levels in the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Different biomarkers and stress responses in P. tricornutum were analysed when organisms were exposed to environmentally relevant PS NPs concentrations between 0.1 and 50 mg L−1. Our results showed significant differences between controls and exposure microalgae, indicating toxicity. After 24 h, an increase in oxidative stress biomarkers, damage to the photosynthetic apparatus, DNA damage and depolarization of mitochondrial and cell membrane from 5 mg L−1 were observed. Further after 72 h the inhibition of population growth and chlorophyll content were observed. Examining effects the effects related to PS NPs size, the smallest (50 nm) induced greater effects at 24 h while bigger PS NPs (100 nm) at72 h. This bigger particles (100 nm) showed more stability (in size distribution and spherical form) in the different culture media assayed, when compared with the rest of particles used. Strong adsorption and/or internalization of PS NPs was confirmed through changes in cell complexity and cell size as well as the fluorescence of 100 nm fluoresbrite PS NPs after washing cell surface.

Frequently detected residuals of antibiotics in crops has drawn increasing attention from research community and the general public. This study was conducted under the controlled environmental conditions to investigate the uptake, translocation and distribution of three different veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in plants of Zea mays L. (maize, the third largest crop in the world, especially in China) and the associated mechanisms. The distribution color-maps of mixed-VAs showed that the highest RCF (root concentration factors) values of chlortetracycline (CTC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) were found in the 0.5–2.0 mm zone (cell division zone), while the highest RCF value of sulfathiazole (ST) was in the 6.0–8.0 mm zone (elongation zone) of root tips (0.5–10.0 mm) after 120 h of exposure to VAs. The translocation factor (TF) of CTC was greater than 1.0, but the TFs of SMZ and ST were less than 1.0 under addition of single antibiotic. However, the TFs of three VAs were all greater than 1.0 at the end of exposure under addition of mixed-VAs. The dissipation of antibiotics by maize was also demonstrated by harvesting all plant parts in an enclosed system. The possible mechanisms for uptake and translocation of VAs in maize were investigated by adding multiple respiration inhibitors into the culture solution. The RCFs of VAs were suppressed heavily by salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) and sodium azide (NaN3), which indicates that the uptake of VAs was an active process. The results of TFs and stem concentration factors (SCFs) of CTC and SMZ in HgCl2 treatments revealed that the translocation of VAs was associated with the aquaporin activity in maize. The findings from this study will have significant implications for the management of crop food contamination by VAs and for the development of phytoremediation technology for antibiotics in the environment.

The effect of selenium (Se) on the reproductive system has been investigated in both humans and vertebrates, but few studies of female fertility and reproduction in invertebrate have been reported. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of SeMet on growth performance and reproductive system after crayfish were fed with graded levels of dietary SeMet (0, 1.49, 3.29, 10.02, 30.27 or 59.8 μg Se/g dry weight) for 60 days. Crayfish treated with the high levels of SeMet (10.02, 30.27 and 59.76 μg Se/g) exhibited decreasing FW and CL in both male and female. Interestingly, Se accumulation was higher in ovary than in other tissues, suggesting that ovary may serve as a target organ for Se accumulation. We found that dietary Se concentration of 10.02 μg Se/g significantly improved the spawning rate, promoted the synchronized spawning, and up-regulated the expressions of mRNA of cdc2 and vitellogenin, with significantly increased E2 and VTG concentrations in hemolymph of female crayfish. However, a marked decrease of the E2 contents and spawning rate was observed in the groups treated with 30.27 and 59.76 μg Se/g diets. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that the Se had maximum accumulation in ovary, affecting the reproductive capacity by intervening the expression of cdc2 and vitellogenin in the reproductive system. The LOAEL to induce FW was observed in crayfish fed with 10.02 μg Se/g diet, and its value can cause toxicity within the range of natural concentration, so the addition of Se in the feed should be within 10.02 μg Se/g.

Located within the subtropical convergence zone, the Hawaiian archipelago is subject to high debris loads. This paper represents the first study to determine the spatial and temporal trends of floating macro debris quantities and polymer composition within Maui County waters. Ocean surveys were conducted from 2013 to 2017 and collected 2095 debris items of which 90% were plastic. Attempts to categorize items by source resulted in only 6% likely from land, 12% from ocean-based sources, 50% from either land or ocean, and 32% from unknown sources. Results found a multi-step process for debris accumulation, with temporal trends linked to survey day and year and spatial trends linked to ocean processes. High- and low-density polyethylene and polypropylene accounted for the majority of polymer types. The results of this study demonstrate minimal debris in Maui originates from land/local sources, and the importance of baseline data to guide further research and mitigation measures.

MPs' uptake and tissue accumulation were investigated in mussel exposed to a single dose (2.85 mg ind⁻¹, 3 mg l⁻¹) of a heterogeneous mixture of irregularly shaped particles of HDPE (mainly ≤10 μm), followed by a 7 days depuration period. The results showed that mussels efficiently cleared MPs from water during exposure, and that MPs were accumulated in digestive gland and gills during depuration. In digestive gland, the amount and size of the MPs accumulated decreased with time, indicating a slower processing and elimination of small MPs than of larger ones. In gills, MPs' burdens increased with time, the MPs accumulated were the smallest ones, suggesting the translocation of small MPs from the digestive system to the gills. The hazardous potential of the smaller fraction of MPs (≤4 μm) underlined that more focus should be directed towards the accumulation and effects of this fraction of MPs in the marine environment.
