Spatial patterns and background ranges of naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) (i.e. U-238, Th-232, K-40) and Cs-137 were studied in the urban soils of Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. Multifractal Inverse Distance Weighting (MIDW) was used to generate and analyze distribution patterns of radionuclide activities. Based on Fourier transformation of radioactivity data, a spectral analysis was also applied to separate, where possible, background/baseline patterns from local anomalies: two ranges of background values were found to characterise the Yerevan territory. Specifically, in the south and south-east of Yerevan, the lower background ranges of U-238, Th-232 and K-40 comprised in the intervals 2.60–36.42 Bq/kg, 4.04–30.63 Bq/kg and 147.7–396.7 Bq/kg, respectively, were observed in association with the presence of sedimentary formations. In contrast, the higher ones were found, instead, in the central and northern parts of the city where andesite-basalt lavas and ignimbrite tuffs occur. Here, the background values rise to 142.4 Bq/kg, 138.76 Bq/kg and 1502 Bq/kg, respectively. As for the distribution of artificial Cs-137, its baseline levels in Yerevan seem to depend mostly on the global radioactive fallout and some local technogenic sources. Its distribution patterns partially differ from those of NORs. In the framework of this paper, Radium equivalent activity (RaEq), outdoor absorbed dose rate in air (ODRA) and annual effective dose equivalent (AEDEs) were also determined and mapped. They show a good coincidence of their spatial variations with those of NORs. The Monte Carlo simulation was used to assess excess lifetime cancer risk from a stochastic perspective. The related sensitivity analysis revealed that, among NORs, U-238 and Th-232 give the greatest contribution to the total variance (45.7% 42.8%, respectively). In comparison, K-40 has the lowest share (11.3%). Regarding Cs-137, a highly negligible contribution to the onset of health risks (accounting for 0.02%) was observed.

The mosquito vectors of the genera Aedes and Anopheles present resistance to several commercial insecticides, which are also toxic to non-predator targets. On the other hand, essential oils are a promising source of insecticides. Thus, in this work, the essential oil from the leaves of Piper purusanum was characterized by gas chromatography–based approaches and evaluated as biodefensive against malaria and dengue vectors. The main compounds of P. purusanum essential oil were β-caryophyllene (57.05%), α-humulene (14.50%), and germacrene D (8.20%). The essential oil inhibited egg hatching (7.6 ± 1.5 to 95.6 ± 4.5%), caused larval death (LC₅₀ from 49.84 to 51.60 ppm), and inhibited the action of acetylcholinesterase (IC₅₀ of 2.29 µg/mL), which can be related to the mechanisms of action. On the other hand, the biological activities of β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, and germacrene D were higher than that of essential oil. In addition, these sesquiterpenes and essential oil did not show a lethal effect on Toxorhynchites splendens, Anisops bouvieri, Gambusia affinis, and Diplonychus indicus (LC₅₀ from 2098.80 to 7707.13 ppm), although D. indicus is more sensitive (SI/PSF from 48.56 to 252.02 ppm) to essential oil, representing a natural alternative against these relevant vectors.

In mosquito control programs, insecticides of botanical origin have the potential to eliminate eggs, larvae, and adults. So, the larvicidal, ovicidal, and oviposition-deterrent activities of petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts of the leaves of Eugenia jambolana, Solidago canadensis, Euodia ridleyi, and Spilanthes mauritiana were assayed against the three vector mosquito species, namely Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus. The larval bioassay was conducted following the World Health Organization method. The maximum larval mortality was found with ethyl acetate extract of S. mauritiana against the larvae of A. stephensi, A. aegypti, and C. quinquefasciatus with LC₅₀values of 11.51, 28.1, 14.10 ppm, respectively. The mean percent hatchability of the ovicidal activity was observed at 48-h post-treatment. The percent hatchability was found to be inversely proportional to the concentration of the extract and directly proportional to the number of eggs. The flower head extract of S. mauritiana gave 100 % mortality followed by E. ridleyi, S. canadensis, and E. jambolana against the eggs of the three mosquito vectors. For oviposition-deterrent effect, out of the five concentrations tested (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm), the concentration of 100 ppm showed a significant egg laying-deterrent capacity. The oviposition activity index value of E. jambolana, E. ridleyi, S. canadensis, and S. mauritiana against A. aegypti, A. stephensi, C. quinquefasciatus at 100 ppm were −0.71, −0.71, −0.90, −0.93, −0.85, −0.91, −1, −1, −0.71, −0.85, −1, and −1, respectively. These results suggest that the leaf/flower extracts of certain local plants have the potential to be developed as possible eco-friendly means for the control of mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes transmit dreadful diseases, causing millions of deaths every year. Therefore, screening for larvicidal and pupicidal activity of microbial extracts attributes could lead to development of new and improved mosquito control methods that are economical and safe for nontarget organisms and are ecofriendly. Synthetic chemical insecticides occupy predominant position in control strategies. These hazardous chemicals exert unwarranted toxicity and lethal effects on nontarget organisms, develop physiological resistance in target, and cause adverse environmental effect. For vector control, fungal-mediated natural products have been a priority in this area at present. In the current study, effective larvicidal and pupicidal effect of mycosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using an entomopathogenic fungi Trichoderma harzianum against developmental stages of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti was investigated. An attractive possibility of green nanotechnology is to use microorganisms in the synthesis of nanosilver especially Ag NPs. The mycosynthesized Ag NPs were characterized to find their unique properties through UV-visible spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared, and surface characteristics by scanning electron microscopy. To analyze the bioefficacy, different test concentrations for extracellular filtrate (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 %) and Ag NPs (0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25 %) were prepared to a final volume of 200 mL using deionized water; 20 larvae of each instars (I–IV) and pupa were exposed to each test concentration separately which included a set of control (distilled water) group with five replicates. Characterization of the synthesized Ag NPs were about 10–20 nm without aggregation. Susceptibility of larval instars to synthesized Ag NPs was higher than the extracellular filtrate of T. harzianum alone after 24-h exposure, where the highest mortality was recorded as 92 and 96 % for first and second instars and 100 % for third, fourth instars, and pupa. Lethal concentration 50 values of 0.079, 0.084, 0.087, 0.068, and 0.026 % were recorded for I–IV instars and pupa, respectively, when exposed to Ag NPs at 0.25 % concentration. Toxicity was exhibited against first (1.076 %), second (0.912 %), third (0.770 %), fourth (0.914 %) instars larvae, and pupa (0.387 %) with extracellular filtrate at a concentration of 1 % that was three- to fourfold higher compared to Ag NPs; no mortality was observed in the control. The present study is the first report on effective larvicidal and pupicidal activity of Ag NPs synthesized from an entomopathogenic fungi T. harzianum extracellular filtrate and could be an ideal ecofriendly, single-step, and inexpensive approach for the control of A. aegypti.
