Laboratory experiments with intact sediment cores from a hypertrophic very windy exposed shallow lake were conducted to assess the combined effect of anoxia and sediment resuspension on phosphorus (P) dynamics after adding different P adsorbents (CFH-12® and Phoslock®). In this study we hypothesize that the addition of geoengineering materials will increase P retention in the sediment even at the worst physic-chemical conditions such as anoxia and sediment resuspension. Both adsorbents significantly reduced the P release from the sediments after a 54 days-anoxic incubation period (CFH-12® by 85% and Phoslock® by 98%) and even after resuspension events (CFH-12® by 84% and Phoslock® by 88%), indicating that both adsorbents are suitable P inactivating agents for restoring shallow eutrophicated lakes under such circumstances. CFH-12® did not release dissolved Fe to the water column neither after the anoxic period nor after resuspension events compared to Control (no adsorbents addition). The La concentration was significantly higher in Phoslock® (3.5–5.7 μg L⁻¹) than in Control at all sampling days but it was not affected by resuspension. The high efficiency in P removal under anoxia and resuspension, the low risk of toxicity and the high maximum adsorption capacity makes CFH-12® a promising adsorbent for lake restoration. Nevertheless, further research about the influence of other factors (i.e. pH, alkalinity, interfering substances or strict anoxia) on the performance of CFH-12® is needed.

Wind induced flow velocity patterns and associated thermal destratification can drive to hypoxia reduction in large shallow lakes. The effects of wind induced hydrodynamic changes on destratification and hypoxia reduction were investigated at the Meiling bay (N 31° 22′ 56.4″, E 120° 9′ 38.3″) of Lake Taihu, China. Vertical flow velocity profile analysis showed surface flow velocities consistency with the wind field and lower flow velocity profiles were also consistent (but with delay response time) when the wind speed was higher than 6.2 m/s. Wind field and temperature found the control parameters for hypoxia reduction and for water quality conditions at the surface and bottom profiles of lake. The critical temperature for hypoxia reduction at the surface and the bottom profile was ≤24.1C° (below which hypoxic conditions were found reduced). Strong prevailing wind field (onshore wind directions ESE, SE, SSE and E, wind speed ranges of 2.4–9.1 m/s) reduced the temperature (22C° to 24.1C°) caused reduction of hypoxia at the near surface with a rise in water levels whereas, low to medium prevailing wind field did not supported destratification which increased temperature resulting in increased hypoxia. Non-prevailing wind directions (offshore) were not found supportive for the reduction of hypoxia in study area due to less variable wind field. Daytime wind field found more variable (as compared to night time) which increased the thermal destratification during daytime and found supportive for destratification and hypoxia reduction. The second order exponential correlation found between surface temperature and Chlorophyll-a (R²: 0.2858, Adjusted R-square: 0.2144 RMSE: 4.395), Dissolved Oxygen (R²: 0.596, Adjusted R-square: 0.5942, RMSE: 0.3042) concentrations. The findings of the present study reveal the driving mechanism of wind induced thermal destratification and hypoxic conditions, which may further help to evaluate the wind role in eutrophication process and algal blooms formation in shallow water environments.Wind field is the key control factor for thermal destratification and hypoxia reduction. 24.1C° is the critical/threshold temperature for hypoxia, Chlorophyll-a and NH3-N concentrations of the shallow freshwater lake.

Economically important marine organisms face severe environmental challenges, such as high temperature and low dissolved oxygen, from global climate change. Adverse environmental factors impact the survival and growth of economically important marine organisms, thereby negatively influencing the aquaculture industry. However, little is known about the responses of sea cucumbers to combined environmental co-stressors till now. In this study, ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) was utilized to obtain metabolic profiles of sea cucumbers. Changes in the concentrations of 84, 68, and 417 metabolites related to the responses of sea cucumbers to heat (26 °C), hypoxia (2 mg/L) and the combined stress, respectively, were observed and analyzed. Representative biomarkers were discussed in detail, including deltaline, fusarin C, halichondrin B and rapanone. The concentration of metabolites involved in the regulation of energy metabolism, including amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were significantly changed, and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA)-cycle was significantly altered under heat plus hypoxia. We interpreted these changes partly as an adaptation mechanism in response to environmental stress. Based on the decreased accumulation of glutamine, we hypothesized that heat stress is the main factor that interferes with the process of glutamic acid-glutamine metabolism. The present study showed that combined environmental stressors have a more extensive impact on the metabolites of the respiratory tree in sea cucumbers than single stress. These results would facilitate further development of the sea cucumber as an echinoderm model to study mechanisms of response to adverse environments, as well as to help advance knowledge of the adaptation of marine organisms to global climate change.

Idefjord (Skagerrak, North Sea) has had a long pollution history due to a heavy exposure to effluents from sawmills and pulp and paper industry, which had a detrimental effect on fjord life. Earlier we presented a paper on the pollution history and benthic recovery in the fjord by studying sediment geochemistry (TOC and heavy metals) and benthic foraminifera in the sediment cores taken in the inner and the outer Idefjord. At that stage the foraminiferal (~benthic recovery) record was limited to years 2000 (inner fjord) and 2002 (outer fjord), in contrast to pollutant data reaching all the way up to 2014. In this short note we extend the foraminiferal record to year 2014 and fill the gap in the benthic recovery in the inner and the outer fjord over the last 12years. The results show that both inner and outer fjord inlets currently undergo a steady benthic recovery reflected in comeback of transitional and pre-pollution benthic foraminiferal species after 2000–2002 and towards 2014. The recovery is also supported by increasing faunal diversity, low dominance and since 2000–2002 re-appearance of calcareous foraminiferal species (Bulimina marginata, Elphidium spp., Epistominella vitrea, Hyalinea balthica and Lagena spp), which all disappeared during the period of maximum effluent discharges. At the same time, detection of opportunistic newcomers (e.g. Stainforthia fusiformis) and persisting absence of some transitional species such as Ammoscalaria tenuimargo suggests a recolonization by foraminiferal population with a different species composition as compared to the original pre-pollution community either due to changed environmental conditions or/and increased competition.

In laboratory experiments, the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa was exposed to settling particles. The effects of reef sediment, petroleum drill cuttings and a mix of both, on the development of anoxia at the coral surface were studied using O2, pH and H2S microsensors and by assessing coral polyp mortality. Due to the branching morphology of L. pertusa and the release of coral mucus, accumulation rates of settling material on coral branches were low. Microsensors detected H2S production in only a few samples, and sulfate reduction rates of natural reef sediment slurries were low (<0.3nmolScm−3d−1). While the exposure to sediment clearly reduced the coral’s accessibility to oxygen, L. pertusa tolerated both partial low-oxygen and anoxic conditions without any visible detrimental short-term effect, such as tissue damage or death. However, complete burial of coral branches for >24h in reef sediment resulted in suffocation.
