Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important factor affecting ambient air quality, and furniture production is one of the important sources of VOC pollution. High VOC concentrations have adverse effects on the environment and worker welfare in furniture factories. In order to control VOC emissions in a furniture workshop, the VOC species and concentration distributions were examined. Qualitative analysis of VOC species was carried out by headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The results showed that VOCs from a furniture workshop were mainly 12 substances including acetate, toluene, and xylene compounds. The heights and representative positions of VOCs released during the coating process were determined, and the results showed that VOC concentrations depended on environmental and height factors. The concentration of VOCs decreased with increasing altitude and reached a maximum concentration at 0.4 m above the ground. Because the concentration of VOCs varied with temperature, humidity, air pressure, and amount of spray paint, this paper established functional relationships between VOC concentrations and temperature, humidity, air pressure, and amount of spray paint. These results provide a theoretical basis for furniture workshops to automatically monitor and control VOCs.VOCs from the furniture workshop were mainly composed of 10 substances including acetate, toluene, and xylene compounds.

Based on long-term systematic sampling, information is currently limited regarding the impacts of different air pollution levels on variations of bacteria, fungi and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOMs) in fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅), especially their interactions. Here, PM₂.₅ samples were weekly collected at different air pollution levels in Beijing, China during one-year period. Microbial composition was profiled using Illumina sequencing, and their interactions were further investigated to reveal the hub genera with network analysis. Diversity of bacteria and fungi showed obvious seasonal variations, and the heavy- or severe-pollution levels mainly affected the diversity and composition of bacteria, but not fungi. While, the community structure of both bacteria and fungi was influenced by the combination of air pollution levels and seasons. The most abundant bacterial genera and some genera with highest abundance in heavy- or severe-pollution days were the hub bacteria in PM₂.₅. Whereas, only the dominant fungi in light-pollution days in winter were the hub fungi in PM₂.₅. The complex positive correlations of bacterial or fungal pathogens would aggravate the air pollution effects on human health, despite of their low relative abundances. Moreover, the strong co-occurrence and co-exclusion patterns of bacteria and fungi in PM₂.₅ were identified. Furthermore, the hub environmental factors (e.g., relative humidity and atmospheric pressure) may play central roles in the distributions of bacteria and fungi, including pathogens. Importantly, AOMs showed significant co-occurrence patterns with the main bacterial and fungal genera and potential pathogens, providing possible microbiological evidences for controlling ammonia emissions to effectively reduce PM₂.₅ pollution. These results highlighted the more obvious air pollution impacts on bacteria than fungi, and the complex bacterial-fungal interactions, as well as the important roles of AOMs in airborne microbial interactions webs, improving our understanding of bioaerosols in PM₂.₅.

Recently, ground ozone has become one major airborne pollutant and the frequency of ozone-induced pollution episodes has increased rapidly across China. However, due to the lack of long-term observation data, relevant research on the characteristics and influencing factors of urban ozone concentrations remains limited. Based on ground ozone observation data during 2006–2016, we quantified the causality influence of individual meteorological factors on ozone concentrations in Beijing using a convergent cross mapping (CCM) method. The result indicated that the influence of each meteorological factor on ozone concentrations varied significantly across seasons and years. At the inter-annual scale, all-year meteorological influences on ozone concentrations were much more stable than seasonal meteorological influences. At the seasonal scale, meteorological influences on ozone concentrations were stronger in spring and autumn. Amongst multiple individual factors, temperature was the key meteorological influencing factor for ozone concentrations in all seasons except winter, when wind, humidity and SSD exerted major influences on ozone concentrations. In addition to temperature, air pressure was another meteorological factor that exerted strong influences on ozone concentrations. At both the inter-annual and seasonal scale, the influence of temperature and humidity on ozone concentrations was generally stable whilst that of other factors experienced large variations. Different from PM2.5, meteorological influences on ozone concentrations were relatively weak in summer, when ozone concentrations were the highest in Beijing. Given the generally stable meteorological influences on ozone concentrations and human-induced emissions of VOCs and NOx across seasons, warming induced notable increase in summertime biogenic emissions of VOCs and NOx can be a major driver for the increasing ozone pollution episodes. This research provides useful references for understanding long-term meteorological influences on ozone concentrations in mega cities in China.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing at least 24 carbon atoms (≥C₂₄-PAH) are often associated with pyrogenic processes such as combustion of fuel, wood or coal, and occur in the environment in diesel particulate matter, black carbon and coal tar. Some of the ≥C₂₄-PAH, particularly the group of dibenzopyrenes (five isomers, six aromatic rings) are known to show high mutagenic and carcinogenic activita.Gas chromatography – mass spectrometry is a well-established method for the analysis of lower molecular weight PAH but is not optimally suited for the analysis of ≥C₂₄-PAH due to their low vapor pressures. Also, hundreds of ≥C₂₄-PAH isomers are possible but only a few compounds are commercially available as reference standards. Therefore, in this study, a combination of multidimensional liquid chromatography, UV–Vis diode array detection, PAH selective and highly sensitive atmospheric pressure laser ionization – mass spectrometry is used to detect and unequivocally identify PAH. For identification of PAH in two bituminous coals and one petrol coke sample, unique and compound specific UV–Vis spectra were acquired. It was possible to identify ten compounds (naphtho[1,2,3,4-ghi]perylene, dibenzo[b,ghi]perylene, dibenzo[e,ghi]perylene, dibenzo[cd,lm]perylene, benzo[a]coronene, phenanthrol[5,4,3,2-abcde]perylene, benzo[ghi]naphtho[8,1,2-bcd]perylene, benzo[pqr]naphtho[8,1,2-bcd]perylene, naphtho[8,1,2-abc]coronene and tribenzo[e,ghi,k]perylene) by comparison of acquired spectra with spectra from literature. Additionally, it was possible to detect similar distribution patterns in different samples and signals related to alkylated naphthopyrenes, naphthofluoranthenes or dibenzopyrenes. Subsequent effect-directed analysis of a bituminous coal sample using the microEROD (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase) bioassay showed high suitability and revealed lower EROD induction for the ≥C₂₄-PAH (TEQ range 0.67–10.07 ng/g) than for the allover < C₂₄-PAH containing fraction (TEQ 84.00 ng/g). Nevertheless, the toxicity of ≥C₂₄-PAH has a significant impact compared with <C₂₄-PAH and must be considered for risk assessment. The LC-DAD-APLI-MS method, presented in this study, is a powerful tool for the unequivocal identification of these ≥ C₂₄-PAH.

Ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution has been linked to elevated mortality, especially from cardiovascular diseases. However, evidence on the effects of particulate matter pollution on cardiovascular mortality is still limited in Lanzhou, China. This research aimed to examine the associations of daily mean concentrations of ambient air pollutants (PM₂.₅, PMC, and PM₁₀) and cardiovascular mortality due to overall and cause-specific diseases in Lanzhou. Data representing daily cardiovascular mortality rates, meteorological factors (daily average temperature, daily average humidity, and atmospheric pressure), and air pollutants (PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂) were collected from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2017, in Lanzhou. A quasi-Poisson regression model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used to estimate the associations. Stratified analyses were also performed by different cause-specific diseases, including cerebrovascular disease (CD), ischemic heart disease (IHD), heart rhythm disturbances (HRD), and heart failure (HF). The results showed that elevated concentration of PM₂.₅, PMC, and PM₁₀ had different effects on mortality of different cardiovascular diseases. Only cerebrovascular disease showed a significant positive association with elevated PM₂.₅. Positive associations were identified between PMC and daily mortality rates from total cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and ischemic heart diseases. Besides, increased concentration of PM₁₀ was correlated with increased death of cerebrovascular diseases and ischemic heart diseases. For cerebrovascular disease, each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₂.₅ at lag4 was associated with increments of 1.22% (95% CI 0.11–2.35%). The largest significant effects for PMC on cardiovascular diseases and ischemic heart diseases were both observed at lag0, and a 10 μg/m³ increment in concentration of PMC was associated with 0.47% (95% CI 0.06–0.88%) and 0.85% (95% CI 0.18–1.52%) increases in cardiovascular mortality and ischemic heart diseases. In addition, it exhibited a lag effect on cerebrovascular mortality as well, which was most significant at lag6d, and an increase of 10 μg/m³ in PMC was associated with a 0.76% (95% CI 0.16–1.37%) increase in cerebrovascular mortality. The estimates of percentage change in daily mortality rates per 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₁₀ were 0.52% (95% CI 0.05–1.02%) for cerebrovascular disease at lag6 and 0.53% (95% CI 0.01–1.05%) for ischemic heart disease at lag0, respectively. Our study suggests that elevated concentration of atmospheric PM (PM₂.₅, PMC, and PM₁₀) in Lanzhou is associated with increased mortality of cardiovascular diseases and that the health effect of elevated concentration of PM₂.₅ is more significant than that of PMC and PM₁₀.

The feasibility of biomass-based activated carbons has received a huge attention due to their excellent characteristics such as inexpensiveness, good adsorption behaviour and potential to reduce a strong dependency towards non-renewable precursors. Therefore, in this research work, eco-friendly activated carbon from palm kernel shell that has been produced from one-stage physical activation by using the Box-Behnken design of Response Surface Methodology is highlighted. The effect of three input parameters—temperature, dwell time and gas flow rate—towards product yield and carbon dioxide (CO₂) uptake at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are studied. Model accuracy has been evaluated through the ANOVA analysis and lack-of-fit test. Accordingly, the optimum condition in synthesising the activated carbon with adequate CO₂ adsorption capacity of 2.13 mmol/g and product yield of 25.15 wt% is found at a temperature of 850 °C, holding time of 60 min and CO₂ flow rate of 450 cm³/min. The synthesised activated carbon has been characterised by diverse analytical instruments including thermogravimetric analyser, scanning electron microscope, as well as N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm. The characterisation analysis indicates that the synthesised activated carbon has higher textural characteristics and porosity, together with better thermal stability and carbon content as compared to pristine palm kernel shell. Activated carbon production via one-step activation approach is economical since its carbon yield is within the industrial target, whereas CO₂ uptake is comparable to the synthesised activated carbon from conventional dual-stage activation, commercial activated carbon and other published data from literature.

The photochemical removal of acetaldehyde was studied in N₂ or air (O₂ 1–20%) at atmospheric pressure using side-on and head-on types of 172 nm Xe₂ excimer lamps. When CH₃CHO was decomposed in N₂ using the head-on lamp (HL), CH₄, CO, and CO₂ were observed as products in FTIR spectra. The initial removal rate of CH₃CHO in N₂ was ascertained as 0.37 min⁻¹. In air (1–20% O₂), HCHO, HCOOH, CO, and CO₂ were observed as products in FTIR spectra. The removal rate of CH₃CHO in air using the side-on lamp (SL) increased from 3.2 to 18.6 min⁻¹ with decreasing O₂ concentration from 20 to 1%. It also increased from 2.5 to 3.7 min⁻¹ with increasing CH₃CHO concentration from 150 to 1000 ppm at 20% O₂. The best energy efficiency of the CH₃CHO removal using the SL in a flow system was 2.8 g/kWh at 1% O₂. Results show that the contribution of O(₁D) and O₃ is insignificant in the initial decomposition of CH₃CHO. It was inferred that CH₃CHO is initially decomposed by the O(₃P) + CH₃CHO reaction at 5–20% O₂, whereas the contribution of direct vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis increases concomitantly with decreasing O₂ pressure at < 5% O₂. After initial decomposition of CH₃CHO, it was oxidized further by reactions of O(₃P), OH, and O₃ with various intermediates such as HCHO, HCOOH, and CO, leading to CO₂ as a final product.

To investigate the acid-extractable heavy metals in fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) over Xi’an, China, 24-h PM₂.₅ samples were collected every 3 days from December 2015 through November 2016. The bioavailable fraction, termed here the bioavailability index (BI), of PM₂.₅-bound metal (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, and Zn) and potential influencing factors, including relative humidity, temperature, air pressure, wind speed, visibility, PM₂.₅, and SO₂ concentrations, were assessed in this study. The annual average PM₂.₅ concentration was 50.6 ± 35.6 μg m⁻³, 1.5 times higher than the Chinese national secondary standard. Zn, Ti, and As were the most abundant elements of those analyzed in the PM₂.₅ samples, accounting for 72.1% of total quantity. The seasonal variations and enrichment factor analysis of heavy metals revealed that coal combustion in winter was a crucial source of Pb, Co, Cu, and Zn; and dust resuspension in spring contributed considerable Mn, Ti, and V. The acid-extractable fractions of the measured metals varied. Pb, Cu, Mn, and Zn exhibited relatively high acid-extractable concentrations and BI values. Pb was mostly in the acid-extractable fraction in PM₂.₅, with a mean BI value of 66.7%, the highest in summer (69.8%) and lowest in winter (63.7%). Moreover, the BIs of PM₂.₅-bound heavy metals were inversely related to temperature and wind speed, whereas positively correlated with relative humidity, SO₂, and PM₂.₅ concentration in this study. This study assessed the seasonal distribution and meteorological influence of acid-extractable heavy metals, providing a deeper understanding of atmospheric heavy metal pollution in Xi’an, China.

Aiming at addressing serious pollution in the No. 30106 fully mechanized coal mining face of Shiquan Coal Mine during coal cutting process, the spraying device between hydraulic supports was improved through the combination of experimental analysis, numerical simulation, and field measurement, and a novel wind-assisted centralized spraying dedusting device was developed. The newly developed device could make the formed spraying field more concentrated on the dust-producing source around the coal shearer’s drum, and thus significantly enhanced the spraying performance. According to numerical simulation results, the spraying performance reached the optimum at a hydraulic pressure of 8 MPa for the spraying device and an air pressure of 1 MPa for the pneumatic motor; under these optimal conditions, the droplet concentration in the spraying field around the coal cutter drum was as high as 24.85 g/m³, and the formed high-concentration spraying field could basically cover the whole section in the spraying field from coal wall to the support pillar. Field measured results revealed that, at a hydraulic pressure of 8 MPa and an air pressure of 1 MPa, the dust suppression rate around coal cutter driver reached up to 87.96%, suggesting that the developed wind-assisted centralized spraying dedusting device had remarkable dust suppression performance and could effectively improve the operating environment in the fully mechanized mining face.
