The widespread use of nano-enabled agrochemicals in agriculture for remediating soil and improving nutrient use efficiency of organic and chemical fertilizers is increasing continuously with limited understanding on their potential risks. Recent studies suggested that nanoparticles (NPs) are harmful to soil organisms and their stimulated nutrient cycling in agriculture. However, their toxic effects under natural input farming systems are just at its infancy. Here, we aimed to examine the harmful effects of nano-agrochemical zinc oxide (ZnONPs) to poultry (PM) and farmyard manure (FYM) C and N cycling in soil-plant systems. These manures enhanced microbial counts, CO₂ emission, N mineralization, spinach yield and N recovery than control (unfertilized). Soil applied ZnONPs increased labile Zn in microbial biomass, conferring its consumption and thereby reduced the colony-forming bacterial and fungal units. Such effects resulted in decreasing CO₂ emitted from PM and FYM by 39 and 43%, respectively. Further, mineralization of organic N was reduced from FYM by 32%, and PM by 26%. This process has considerably decreased the soil mineral N content from both manure types and thereby spinach yield and plant N recoveries. In the ZnONPs amended soil, only about 23% of the applied total N from FYM and 31% from PM was ended up in plants, whereas the respective fractions in the absence of ZnONPs were 33 and 53%. Hence, toxicity of ZnONPs should be taken into account when recommending its use in agriculture for enhancing nutrient utilization efficiency of fertilizers or soil remediation purposes.

Hourly PM₂.₅ speciation data have been widely used as an input of positive matrix factorization (PMF) model to apportion PM₂.₅ components to specific source-related factors. However, the influence of constant source profile presumption during the observation period is less investigated. In the current work, hourly concentrations of PM₂.₅ water-soluble inorganic ions, bulk organic and elemental carbon, and elements were obtained at an urban site in Nanjing, China from 2017 to 2020. PMF analysis based on observation data during specific pollution (firework combustion, sandstorm, and winter haze) and emission-reduction (COVID-19 pandemic) periods was compared with that using the whole 4-year data set (PMFwₕₒₗₑ). Due to the lack of data variability, event-based PMF solutions did not separate secondary sulfate and nitrate. But they showed better performance in simulating average concentrations and temporal variations of input species, particularly for primary source markers, than the PMFwₕₒₗₑ solution. After removing event data, PMF modeling was conducted for individual months (PMFₘₒₙₜₕ) and the 4-year period (PMF₄₋yₑₐᵣ), respectively. PMFₘₒₙₜₕ solutions reflected varied source profiles and contributions and reproduced monthly variations of input species better than the PMF₄₋yₑₐᵣ solution, but failed to capture seasonal patterns of secondary salts. Additionally, four winter pollution days were selected for hour-by-hour PMF simulations, and three sample sizes (500, 1000, and 2000) were tested using a moving window method. The results showed that using short-term observation data performed better in reflecting immediate changes in primary sources, which will benefit future air quality control when primary PM emissions begin to increase.

The airway macrophages carbon loading (AMCL) has been suggested to be a biomarker of the long-term exposure to air pollution; however, to date no study has characterized AMCL for the pregnancy period. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the determinants of AMCL during pregnancy in Iran, a middle-income country. This study was based on a sample of 234 pregnant women with term and normal vaginal delivery who were residing in Sabzevar, Iran (2019). We characterized 35 potential determinants of personal exposure to air pollution for each participant, including six personal, nine indoor, and 20 home-outdoor factors. We applied Deletion/Substitution/Addition algorithm to identify the most relevant determinants that could predict AMCL levels. The median (IQR) of AMCL level was 0.12 (0.30) μm² with a successful sputum induction in 82.9% (194) of participants. Ambient residential PM₂.₅ levels were positively associated with higher AMCL levels. On the other hand, increased residential distance to the traffic lights, squares and ring-roads, the duration of opening window per day, and opening window during cooking were inversely associated with AMCL levels. Our findings provide novel insights on the different personal, indoor, and outdoor determinants of personal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy in a middle-income country.

Garden pruning waste is becoming a problem that intensifies the garbage siege. It is of great significance to purify polluted water using biochar prepared from garden pruning waste. Herein, the interaction mechanism between BPS and oriental plane tree biochar (TBC) with different surface functional groups was investigated by adsorption experiments, spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm of BPS on TBC can be satisfactorily fitted into pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, respectively. A rapid adsorption kinetic toward BPS was achieved by TBC in 15 min. As compared with TBC prepared at low temperature (300 °C) (LTBC), the maximum adsorption capacity of TBC prepared at high temperature (600 °C) (HTBC) can be significantly improved from 46.7 mg g⁻¹ to 72.9 mg g⁻¹. Besides, the microstructure and surface functional groups of HTBC were characterized using SEM, BET-N₂, and XPS analysis. According to density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations, the higher adsorption energy of HTBC for BPS was mainly attributed to π-π interaction rather than hydrogen bonding, which was further supported by the analysis of FTIR and Raman spectra as well as the adsorption thermodynamic parameters. These findings suggested that by improving π-π interaction through high pyrolysis temperature, BPS could be removed and adsorbed by biochar with high efficacy, cost-efficiency, easy availability, and carbon-negative in nature, contributing to global carbon neutrality.

Carbonaceous aerosols pose significant climatic impact, however, their sources and respective contribution to light absorption vary and remain poorly understood. In this work, filter-based PM₂.₅ samples were collected in winter of 2021 at three urban sites in Yibin, a fast-growing city in the south of Sichuan Basin, China. The composition characteristics of PM₂.₅, light absorption and source of carbonaceous aerosol were analyzed. The city-wide average concentration of PM₂.₅ was 87.4 ± 31.0 μg/m³ in winter. Carbonaceous aerosol was the most abundant species, accounting for 42.5% of the total PM₂.₅. Source apportionment results showed that vehicular emission was the main source of PM₂.₅ during winter, contributing 34.6% to PM₂.₅. The light absorption of black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) were derived from a simplified two-component model. We apportioned the light absorption of carbonaceous aerosols to BC and BrC using the Least Squares Linear Regression with optimal angstrom absorption exponent of BC (AAEBC). The average absorption of BC and BrC at 405 nm were 51.6 ± 21.5 Mm⁻¹ and 17.7 ± 8.0 Mm⁻¹, respectively, with mean AAEBC = 0.82 ± 0.02. The contribution of BrC to the absorption of carbonaceous reached 26.1% at 405 nm. Based on the PM₂.₅ source apportionment and the mass absorption cross-section (MAC) value of BrC at 405 nm, vehicle emission was found to be the dominant source of BrC in winter, contributing up to 56.4%. Therefore, vehicle emissions mitigation should be the primary and an effective way to improve atmospheric visibility in this fast-developing city.

Freshwater wetlands are natural sinks of carbon; yet, wetland conversion for agricultural uses can shift these carbon sinks into large sources of greenhouse gases. We know that the anthropogenic alteration of wetland hydrology and the broad use of N-fertilizers can modify biogeochemical cycling, however, the extent of their combined effect on greenhouse gases exchange still needs further research. Moreover, there has been recent interest in wetlands rehabilitation and preservation by improving natural water flow and by seeking alternative solutions to nutrient inputs. In a microcosm setting, we experimentally exposed soils to three inundation treatments (Inundated, Moist, Drained) and a nutrient treatment by adding high nitrogen load (300 kg ha⁻¹) to simulate physical and chemical disturbances. After, we measured the depth microprofiles of N₂O and O₂ concentration and CO₂ and CH₄ emission rates to determine how hydrological alteration and nitrogen input affect carbon and nitrogen cycling processes in inland wetland soils. Compared to the Control soils, N-fertilizer increased CO₂ emissions by 40% in Drained conditions and increased CH₄ emissions in Inundated soils over 90%. N₂O emissions from Moist and Inundated soils enriched with nitrogen increased by 17.4 and 18-fold, respectively. Overall, the combination of physical and chemical disturbances increased the Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 7.5-fold. The first response of hydrological rehabilitation, while typically valuable for CO₂ emission reduction, amplified CH₄ and N₂O emissions when combined with high nitrogen inputs. Therefore, this research highlights the importance of evaluating the potential interactive effects of various disturbances on biogeochemical processes when devising rehabilitation plans to rehabilitate degraded wetlands.

Salinity stress seriously threatens agricultural productivity and food security worldwide. This work reports on the mechanisms of alleviating salinity stress by cerium oxide nanomaterials (CeO2 NMs) in maize (Zea may L.). Soil-grown maize plants were irrigated with deionized water or 100 mM NaCl solution as the control or the salinity stress treatment. CeO2 NMs (1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/L) with antioxidative enzyme mimicking activities were foliarly applied on maize leaves for 7 days. The morphological, physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic responses of maize were evaluated. Specifically, salinity stress significantly reduced 59.0% and 63.8% in maize fresh and dry biomass, respectively. CeO₂ NMs at 10, 20, and 50 mg/L improved the salt tolerance of maize by 69.5%, 69.1%, and 86.8%, respectively. Also, 10 mg/L CeO₂ NMs maintained Na⁺/K⁺ homeostasis, enhanced photosynthetic efficiency by 30.8%, and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) level by 58.5% in salt-stressed maize leaves. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the antioxidative defense system-related genes recovered to the normal control level after CeO₂ NMs application, indicating that CeO₂ NMs eliminated ROS through their intrinsic antioxidative enzyme properties. The down-regulation of genes related to lignin synthesis in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway accelerated leaf cell elongation. In addition, CeO₂ NMs increased the rhizobacteria richness and diversity through the increment of carbon source in root exudates and improved the abundance of halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (HT-PGPR). Importantly, the yield of salt-stressed maize was enhanced by 293.3% after 10 mg/L CeO₂ NMs foliar application. These results will provide new insights for the application of CeO₂ NMs in management to reduce the salinity-caused crop loss.

Soil Cd and Zn contamination has become a serious environmental problem. This work explored the performance of wood vinegar (WV) in enhancing the phytoextraction of Cd/Zn by hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance. Rhizosphere chemical properties, enzyme activities and bacterial community were analyzed to determine the mechanisms of metal accumulation in this process. Results demonstrated that, after 120 days growth, different times dilution of WV increased the shoot biomass of S. alfredii by 85.2%–148%. In addition, WV application significantly increased soil available Cd and Zn by lowing soil pH, which facilitated plant uptake. The optimal Cd and Zn phytoextraction occurred from the 100 times diluted WV (D100), which increased the Cd and Zn extraction by 188% and 164%, compared to CK. The 100 and 50 times diluted WV significantly increased soil total and available carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and enhancing enzyme activities of urease, acid phosphatase, invertase and protease by 10.1–21.4%, 29.1–42.7%,12.2–38.3% and 26.8–85.7%, respectively, compared to CK. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the D 100 significantly increased the bacterial diversity compared to CK. Soil bacterial compositions at phylum, family and genera level were changed by WV addition. Compared to CK, WV application increased the relative abundances of genus with plant growth promotion and metal mobilization function such as, Bacillus, Gemmatimonas, Streptomyces, Sphingomonas and Polycyclovorans, which was positively correlated to biomass, Cd/Zn concentrations and extractions by S. alfredii. Structural equation modeling analysis showed that, soil chemical properties, enzyme activities and bacterial abundance directly or indirectly contributed to the biomass promotion, Cd, and Zn extraction by S. alfredii. To sum up, WV improved phytoextraction efficiency by enhancing plant growth, Cd and Zn extraction and increasing soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and modifying bacterial community.

Petroleum hydrocarbon pollution is a global problem. However, the effects of different petroleum pollution levels on soil microbial communities and ecological functions are still not clear. In this study, we analyzed the changes in microbial community structures and carbon and nitrogen transformation functions in oil-contaminated soils at different concentrations by chemical analysis, high-throughput sequencing techniques, cooccurrence networks, and KEGG database comparison functional gene annotation. The results showed that heavy petroleum concentrations (petroleum concentrations greater than 20,000 mg kg⁻¹) significantly decreased soil microbial diversity (p = 0.01), soil microbiome network complexity, species coexistence patterns, and prokaryotic carbon and nitrogen fixation genes. In medium petroleum contamination (petroleum concentrations of between 4000 mg kg⁻¹ and 20,000 mg kg⁻¹), microbial diversity (p > 0.05) and carbon and nitrogen transformation genes showed no evident change but promoted species coexistence patterns. Heavy petroleum contamination increased the Proteobacteria phylum abundance by 3.91%–57.01%, while medium petroleum contamination increased the Actinobacteria phylum abundance by 1.69%–0.26%. The results suggested that petroleum concentrations played a significant role in shifting soil microbial community structures, ecological functions, and species diversities.

Lipids are important biogenic markers to indicate the sources and chemical process of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. To better understand the influences of biogenic and anthropogenic sources on forest aerosols, total suspended particles (TSP) were collected at Mt. Changbai, Shennongjia, and Xishuangbanna that are located at different climatic zones in northeastern, central and southwestern China. n-Alkanes, fatty acids and n-alcohols were detected in the forest aerosols based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total concentrations of aliphatic compounds ranged from 15.3 ng m⁻³ to 566 ng m⁻³, and fatty acids were the most abundant (44–95%) followed by n-alkanes and n-alcohols. Low molecular weight- (LFAs) and unsaturated fatty acids (UnFAs) showed diurnal variation with higher concentrations during the nighttime in summer, indicating the potential impact from microbial activities on forest aerosols. The differences of oleic acid (C₁₈:₁) and linoleic acid (C₁₈:₂) concentrations between daytime and nighttime increased at lower latitude, indicating more intense photochemical degradation occurred at lower latitude regions. High levels of n-alkanes during daytime in summer with higher values of carbon preference indexes, combining the strong odd carbon number predominance with a maximum at C₂₇ or C₂₉, implied the high contributions of biogenic sources, e.g., higher plant waxes. In contrast, higher concentrations of low molecular weight n-alkanes were detected in winter forest aerosols. Levoglucosan showed a positive correlation (R² > 0.57) with high- and low molecular weight aliphatic compounds in Mt. Changbai, but such a correlation was not observed in Shennongjia and Xishuangbanna. These results suggest the significant influence of biomass burning in Mt. Changbai, and fossil fuel combustion might be another important anthropogenic source of forest aerosols. This study adds useful information to the current understanding of forest organic aerosols at different geographical locations in China.
