Arctic snow pollution: A GC-HRMS case study of Franz Joseph Land archipelago

Anthropogenic pollution of the Arctic atmosphere is of great interest due to the vulnerability of the Arctic ecosystems, as well as the processes of global transport and accumulation of atmospheric aerosols at high latitudes under conditions of cold climate. The present work throws light upon chemical composition of Arctic snow as a natural deposition matrix for atmospheric semi-volatile pollutants taken from the northernmost Arctic archipelago - Franz Josef Land, which is least affected by local sources of pollution and being a unique unstudied environmental object. The used methodology involved the liquid-liquid extraction of snow samples with dichloromethane and combination of targeted and non-targeted analyses of semi-volatile organic compounds with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography – high-resolution mass spectrometry. While almost none of the known priority pollutants (except three dialkylphthalates) were identified in the studied samples, non-targeted screening revealed a specific class of biomass burning biomarkers – fatty amides with oleamide being the major component among them. Some peculiar organic pollutants (N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine and N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) were identified in few samples.First results on the semi volatile pollutants in Franz Joseph Land snow were obtained using the most reliable GC × GC-HRMS non-target analysis.

In shallow eutrophic lakes, metal remobilization is closely related to the resuspension and eutrophication. An improved understanding of metal dynamics by biogeochemical processes is essential for effective management strategies. We measured concentrations of nine metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Fe, Al, Mg, and Mn) in water and sediments during seven periods from 2014 to 2018 in northern Lake Taihu, to investigate the metal pollution status, spatial distributions, mineral constituents, and their interactions with P. Moreover, an automatic weather station and online multi-sensor systems were used to measure meteorological and physicochemical parameters. Combining these measurements, we analyzed the controlling factors of metal dynamics. Shallow and eutrophic northern Lake Taihu presents more serious metal pollution in sediments than the average of lakes in Jiangsu Province. We found chronic and acute toxicity levels of dissolved Pb and Zn (respectively), compared with US-EPA “National Recommended Water Quality Criteria”. Suspended particles and sediment have been polluted in different degrees from uncontaminated to extremely contaminated according to German pollution grade by LAWA (Bund/Länder-Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wasser). Polluted particles might pose a risk due to high resuspension rate and intense algal activity in shallow eutrophic lakes. Suspended particles have similar mineral constituents to sediments and increased with increasing wind velocity. Al, Fe, Mg, and Mn in the sediment were rarely affected by anthropogenic pollution according to the geoaccumulation index. Among them, Mn dynamics is very likely associated with algae. Micronutrient uptake by algal will affect the migration of metals and intensifies their remobilization. Intensive pollution of most particulate metals were in the industrialized and down-wind area, where algae form mats and decompose. Moreover, algal decomposition induced low-oxygen might stimulate the release of metals from sediment. Improving the eutrophication status, dredging sediment, and salvaging cyanobacteria biomass are possible ways to remove or reduce metal contaminations.

The aquifer in Tondiarpet, Chennai, had been severely contaminated with petroleum fuels due to an underground pipeline leakage. Groundwater samples were analyzed quarterly for priority pollutants such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene (BTEXN) using purge and trap gas chromatography and mass spectrometer from 2016 to 2018. The maximum concentrations of BTEXN in groundwater at the site were found to be greater than the permissible limits significantly. Among the five sampling locations (MW1, MW2, MW3, MW4, and MW5), mean BTEXN levels were found to be higher near MW2, confirming the source location of petroleum leakage. Human health risk assessment was carried out using deterministic and probabilistic methods for exposure to BTEXN by oral and dermal exposure pathways. Risk analysis indicated that mean cancer and non-cancer risks were many times higher than the allowable limits of 1E-06 and 1 respectively in all age groups (children, teens, and adults), implying the adverse health effects. Oral exposure is predominately contributing (60–80%) to the total health risk in comparison to the dermal exposure route. Variability and uncertainty were addressed using the Monte Carlo simulations and the resultant minimum, maximum, 5th, 95th, and mean percentile risks were predicted. Under the random exposure conditions to BTEXN, it was estimated that the risk would become unacceptable for >98.7% of the exposed population. Based on the sensitivity analysis, exposure duration, and ingestion rate are the crucial variables contributing significantly to the health risk. As part of the risk management, preliminary remediation goals for the study site were estimated, which require >99% removal of the BTEXN contamination for risk-free exposures. It is suggested that the residents of Tondiarpet shouldn’t utilize the contaminated groundwater mainly for oral ingestion to lower the cancer incidence related to exposure to BTEXN.

The occurrence of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in the environment is becoming a major area of concern due to their undesirable effects on non-target organisms. This study investigated the occurrence and risk of contamination by five antibiotics and three antiretrovirals drugs in a fast-growing peri-urban area in Kenya, with inadequate sewer system coverage. Due to poor sewage connectivity and poorly designed decentralized systems, wastewater is directly released in open drains. Water and sediment samples were collected from open surface water drains, while wastewater samples were collected from centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Solid-phase extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction for the aqueous and sediment samples respectively were carried out and extracts analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) using isotopically labeled internal standards. APIs were observed with the detection frequency ranging from 36% to 100%. High mean concentrations of 48.7 μg L⁻¹, 108 μg L⁻¹, and 532 μg L⁻¹ were observed in surface drains for Lamivudine (3 TC), Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), Ciprofloxacin (CIP) respectively. Drain sediments also showed high concentrations of APIs ranging from 2.1 to 13,100 μg kg⁻¹. APIs in this study exceeded those observed in existing literature studies. JKUAT WWTP removal efficiencies varied from −90.68% to 72.67%. Total APIs emission load of the study area was 3550 mg d⁻¹ with WWTP effluent contributing higher loads (2620 mg d⁻¹) than surface water drains (640 mg d⁻¹). Zidovudine (ZDV), nevirapine (NVP), and trimethoprim (TMP) loads in drains, however, exceeded WWTP effluent. Low to high ecotoxicity risk of the individual APIs were observed to the aquatic environment, with high risks for the development of antibiotic resistance in microbiome as determined by the risk quotient (RQ) approach. Risk management through efficient wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment is necessary to suppress the measured concentrations.

This study aimed to provide a comprehensive characterisation of the indoor air quality during the sleeping period of 10 couples at Lisbon dwellings, using a multi-pollutant approach, and to understand how the compliance with legislation and guidelines was to assure a good indoor air quality. The assessment of indoor air quality was conducted in the cold season using real time monitors during the sleeping period for comfort parameters (temperature and relative humidity) and air pollutants (carbon dioxide – CO₂, carbon monoxide – CO, formaldehyde – CH₂O, total volatile organic compounds – VOCs, and particulate matter – PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), together with active sampling of bioaerosols (fungi and bacteria) before and after the sleeping period. Lower compliance (less than 50% of the cases) with the Portuguese legislation was found for temperature, CO₂ (3440 ± 1610 mg m⁻³), VOCs (1.79 ± 0.99 mg m⁻³) and both bioaerosol types. In 70% of the cases, PM₂.₅ (15.3 ± 9.1 μg m⁻³) exceeded the WHO guideline of 10 μg m⁻³. All bedrooms presented air change rates above the recommended minimum value of 0.7 h⁻¹, highlighting that a good indoor air quality during sleep is not guaranteed.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can undergo long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) and deposit in remote areas. How persistent are POPs in remote areas? To answer this question, we measured two parent-DDTs and eight metabolites in soil and air along a transect in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China, to quantitatively evaluate the degree of degradation of DDTs. DDTs were ubiquitous in soil and air with the total DDT concentrations (Σ₁₀DDTs) ranging 37.7–70,100 pg g⁻¹ dw and 3.4–175 pg m⁻³, respectively. The air-soil equilibrium status indicated that the forest/basin soil was a source for most DDTs, while the plateau soil was a sink receiving DDTs from the LRAT and photodegradation in the air (for metabolites). The metabolites accounted for avg. 64.1% of Σ₁₀DDTs in soil, with avg. 93.2% from local degradation, implying the overall high degradation of DDTs. With the significant degradation, the continuous input via LRAT was deemed to be the main reason for the stable level (persistence) of POPs in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of source control for the risk management of POPs. POPs in the environment might decline rapidly due to a reduction in source input and significant degradation as indicated by our study.

The Sürgü Stream, located in the Euphrates River basin of Turkey, is used for drinking water source, agricultural irrigation and rainbow trout production. Therefore, water quality of the stream is of great importance. In this study, multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs) and water quality index (WQI) were applied to assess water quality of the stream affected by multiple stressors such as untreated domestic sewage, effluents from fish farms, agricultural runoff and streambank erosion. For this, 16 water quality parameters at five sites along the stream were monitored monthly during one year. Most of parameters showed significant spatial variations, indicating the influence of anthropogenic activities. All parameters except TN (total nitrogen) showed significant seasonal differences due to high seasonality in WT (water temperature) and water flow. The spatial variations in the WQI were significant (p < 0.05) and the mean WQI values ranged from 87.6 to 95.3, indicating “good” to “excellent” water quality in the stream. Cluster analysis classified five sites into three groups, that is, clean region, low polluted region and very clean region. Stepwise temporal discriminant analysis (DA) identified that pH, WT, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, COD (chemical oxygen demand), TSS (total suspended solids) and Ca²⁺ are the parameters responsible for variations between seasons, and stepwise spatial DA identified that DO (dissolved oxygen), EC (electrical conductivity), NH₄–N, TN (total nitrogen) and TSS are the parameters responsible for variations between the regions. Principal component analysis/factor analysis revealed that the parameters responsible for water quality variations were mainly associated with suspended solids (both natural and anthropogenic), soluble salts (natural) and nutrients and organic matter (anthropogenic).

Field survey-based ecological risk assessments for trace metals are conducted to examine the necessity and/or effectiveness of management intervention, such as setting of environmental quality standards. Observational datasets often involve confounders that may bias estimation of the effects of intervention (e.g., reduction of trace-metal concentrations through regulation). The field of ecotoxicology lags behind some other research fields in understanding proper analytical procedures for causal inference from observational datasets; there are only a few field survey-based ecotoxicological studies that have explicitly controlled for confounders in their statistical analyses. In the present study, we estimated the effect of intervention in nickel concentrations on Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera richness in rivers in Japan. We also provide detailed explanations for the backgrounds of spurious associations derived from confounders and on proper analytical procedures for obtaining an unbiased estimate of the targeted intervention effect by using regression analysis. We constructed a multiple regression model based on a causal diagram for aquatic insects and environmental factors, and on “the backdoor criterion,” that enabled us to determine the set of covariates required to obtain an unbiased estimate of the targeted intervention effect from regression coefficients. We found that management intervention in nickel concentrations may be ineffective compared to intervention in organic pollution, and that analysis ignoring the confounders overestimated the effect of intervention in nickel concentrations. Our results highlight the fact that confounders can lead to misjudging the necessity for management of anthropogenic chemical substances. Confounders should be explicitly specified and statistically controlled to achieve a comprehensive assessment of ecological risks for various substances.

Occurrence, behavior, and fate of 11 OPEs in multiple environmental matrices, which include air, rainwater, dustfall, paddy soil, irrigation water, and rice plants from nine subtropical paddy fields of South China, were investigated. The total concentrations of 11 OPEs (∑₁₁OPEs) in all matrices are generally higher in the urban areas than in rural areas, and they are higher in summer than in fall. However, both urban and rural areas showed a similar composition profile of OPEs, indicating that the OPEs come from similar sources in the two areas. Except for irrigation water, significant positive correlations of ∑₁₁OPEs were observed between air and the other five matrices. The exchange and partition of OPEs among air, soil, and water demonstrate that most of OPEs were transferred from air into water and soil, and from water into soil. Thus, the air may be an important source of OPEs in the paddy fields, and the soil may act as a principal environmental reservoir of OPEs. The contribution of air-soil exchange, atmospheric deposition (rainwater plus dustfall), and irrigation water to the total input fluxes of OPEs (2100 ± 980 ng/m²/day) reached an average of 19%, 38% (37% + 1%), and 43%, respectively. The water (rainwater plus irrigation water) is the primary medium transferring the OPEs into the paddy fields and contributed to the input flux by 80%. Output flux of OPEs via mature rice plants was about 220 μg/m², 2% of which were presented in rice, and the remaining 98% may be re-released into the environment through the pathway of straw turnover or burning. Dietary exposure via rice was much higher than inhalation exposure, dust ingestion, and dermal absorption via dust. However, no data shows that all of the intakes via the four exposure pathways could cause the risks to human health at present.

In this study, the Songgang River (SR) was selected as a typical tributary that is heavily polluted by rapid urbanization and industrialization. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) distribution at five representative sampling sites from different urban functional areas was studied. The chemical and physical properties and spatial and vertical distribution of PAHs in sediments were investigated. PAH source identification and the ecological risks of the sediments were evaluated. The results suggested that the industrial zone and dense residential and commercial areas were the most contaminated areas of the SR, as the chemical and physical properties of total organic carbon content in sediments was the highest at the dense residential and commercial areas (0.1–4.5%); however, the acid volatile sulfide, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents were the highest in the industrial zone, with ranges of 700.0–1618.4 mg/kg dw, 22.4–3543.9 mg/kg dw, and 82.3–4550.7 mg/kg dw, respectively. The spatial distribution of residual PAHs in the sediment cores showed a wide variation among different urban functional areas, and the vertical characterization (0–300 cm) depicted a significant decreasing trend with depth and with an abrupt increase at 180 cm. The concentration of ∑16 PAHs ranged from 208.7 to 7709.8 ng/g dw, with the highest concentrations obtained in the industrial zone. The low molecular weight-PAHs (153–6720 ng/g dw) were predominant in the sediments. Furthermore, there were combined sources (biomass burning: 40.3%; fossil fuel combustion: 25.5%; mixed source: 21.5%; oil pollution: 12.7%) and a long term accumulation effect, with anthropogenic activities and industrial pollution as the major contributing sources. The concentrations of Nap, Acy, Ace, Flu, and Ant exceeded the lower limit of the sediment quality criteria, and higher toxic equivalent concentration values of the total carcinogenic PAHs were observed nearby the midstream of the SR, which may cause adverse biological effects and implies a need for regular monitoring.
