Differences in the accumulation of mercury (Hg) in five species of marine bivalves, including scallops Chlamys nobilis, clams Ruditapes philippinarum, oysters Saccostrea cucullata, green mussels Perna viridis, and black mussels Septifer virgatus, were investigated. The bivalves displayed different patterns of Hg accumulation in terms of the body concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) and total Hg (THg), as well as the ratio of MeHg to THg. Parameters of the biodynamics of the accumulation of Hg(II) and MeHg could reflect the species-dependent Hg concentrations in the bivalves. With the exception of black mussels, we found a significant relationship between the efflux rates of Hg(II) and the THg concentrations in the bivalves. The interspecific variations in the MeHg to THg ratio were largely controlled by the relative difference between the elimination rates of Hg(II) and MeHg. Stable isotope (δ¹³C) analysis indicated that the five bivalve species had contrasting feeding niches, which may also affect the Hg accumulation.

The main goal of this study was to determine the concentrations of trace elements in the mineralogically contrasting shells of two Arctic bivalves: Chlamys islandica and Ciliatocardium ciliatum. Aragonite shells seem to be more susceptible to the binding of metal ions, which is most likely a result of their crystal lattice structure. We suggest that less biologically controlled aragonite mineralization tends to incorporate more metal impurities into the crystal lattice in waters with a lower pH, where metal ions are more available. Higher concentrations of impurities may further increase the lattice distortion causing lower crystal lattice stability and higher susceptibility to dissolution. Calcitic shells seem to be less prone to bind metal ions than aragonite shells most likely because under strict biological control, the uptake of ions from ambient seawater is more selective; thus, the final crystal lattice is less contaminated by other metals and is more resistant to dissolution.

The decrease of ice cover in polar areas is expected to lead to an increase in ship traffic. In this context, the risk associated with exposure of the aquatic environment to oil-related chemicals from spills and/or accidental fuel discharges from ships will increase in the near future, potentially causing negative impacts on sensitive Arctic species. This study investigated for the first time the biomarker responses of the Icelandic scallops (Chlamys islandica) to marine diesel exposure. Antioxidant response, neurotoxic effect, gonad maturation, and lipid content were assessed in male and female scallops, Chlamys islandica after a 7-day exposure to marine diesel. At the end of exposure, results showed an inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity in Icelandic scallops exposed to high concentration of diesel. At the end of exposure, results showed an increase in naphthalene residues in hemolymph, together with an inhibition of AChE activity in Icelandic scallops exposed to high concentration of diesel. In addition, alteration of the escape capacity was observed suggesting effects on behavior responses. Overall, this study contributes to the better knowledge of physiological effects of marine diesel in Arctic marine organisms.

The decrease of ice cover in the Arctic will lead to an increase of ship traffic in the upcoming decades. Consequently, oil pollution is expected. In this context, the goals of this study were to evaluate the biological impact of marine diesel contamination and, on this basis, to determine analytical tools of interest (biomarkers) for future biomonitoring of diesel spills. Using a 7-day contamination protocol, this study investigated biochemical modulations in the digestive gland of the Iceland scallop (Chlamys islandica). Incorporation of contaminants was verified assessing haemolymph metabolites. Results showed a response of glutathione-S-transferase to contamination suggesting detoxification processes and the suitability of such a tool for diesel spill biomonitoring. The lack of modulation of superoxide dismutase activity and lipid peroxidation suggests no oxidative stress and the unsuitability of these molecular tools for biomonitoring.

Fingerprinting of the main lipid components of the digestive gland of the Icelandic scallop—Chlamys islandica—has been performed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with time of flight high-resolution mass spectrometry, UHPLC-HRMS/ToF. This method allowed the identification of 224 lipids, including phosphatidylcholines (PC), plasmanyl (PC-O)/plasmenyl (PC-P) phosphatidylcholines, lyso-phosphatidylcholines (LPC), and their plasmanyl/plasmenyl forms (LPC-O/LPC-P). Diacylglycerols (DG), triacylglycerols (TG), and cholesteryl esters (CE) were the neutral lipids (NL) analyzed. While all of the lipids showed a strong seasonal dependence in terms of quantity, only NLs presented significant qualitative changes. Principal component analysis (PCA) of TG and DG profiles evidenced a prevalence of low unsaturated TGs and DGs in spring, which were replaced by species with a higher degree of unsaturations in summer. In autumn, long and highly unsaturated TGs constitute the lipid fraction of the digestive gland of the scallop, while DG species offer a mixed profile. This study contributes to the characterization and the elucidation of the lipidome of Chlamys islandica and provides baseline data for further study of the effects of pollutants on the lipidome of the Icelandic scallop, often used as a sentinel species in biomonitoring programs.

Concentrations of some metals (Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Pb) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in edible marine organisms from different trophic levels and feeding behaviour like bivalve molluscs (Mytilus galloprovincialis and Chlamys glabra), gastropod molluscs (Hexaplex trunculus) and some commercial species of fish (Trachurus trachurus, Boops boops, Sarpa salpa and Gobius niger). These species were collected in the first inlet of the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Southern Italy), classified as ‘Site of National Interest’ established by National Law 426 (1998) and included in the ‘National Environmental Remediation and Restoration Projects’. The aim of this work was to investigate contamination levels and public health risks, associated with consuming seafood harvested from these areas. Moreover, in this study, was also estimated the weekly intake in children and adults, both for metals and PCBs. In comparison with the permissible limits set by EC Regulations, Cd and Pb levels were over the limit in the H. trunculus (in all sampling stations) and in the fish T. trachurus respectively. PCBs were over the legal limit in all sampled species with the exception of M. galloprovincialis (station 1), C. glabra and the herbivorous fish S. salpa. In the fish T. trachurus, for example, the concentration of six target PCBs was about five times higher than the EC limit. The estimated intakes of those trace elements included in this study through seafood consumption by the population exceed the provisional tolerable weekly intake recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives for Cd and Hg in the H. trunculus and T. trachurus, especially in children. Moreover, hazard quotience (HQ) for Hg and Cd was >1 in the children for T. trachurus and H. trunculus consumption. As regard non-dioxin-like PCB (NDL-PCB), the estimated intake were always above the ‘provisional guidance value’ (70 ng/kg body weight) Arnich et al. (Regul Toxicol Pharm 54: 287–2, 2009) for all sampled organism. Thus, health risks due to the dietary Hg, Cd and PCBs intake, especially for children, cannot be excluded. Therefore, an extended remediation programme is necessary to safeguard marine ecosystem, human health and, not less important, the economic activities, in the Taranto marine area.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is currently the most widely used brominated flame retardant (BFR). To date, the toxic effects of TBBPA remains poorly understood in aquatic organisms, especially in bivalves. The objective of this experiment was to examine bioaccumulation and multibiomarker responses in the scallop Chlamys farreri exposed to TBBPA under laboratory conditions. The results showed that TBBPA was rapidly accumulated in and then eliminated from the gill and digestive gland of the scallops. TBBPA exposure invoked alterations in the detoxification system and induced oxidant stress and biomacromolecule damages in the gill and digestive gland of C. farreri. Additionally, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO) level, cytochrome b5 (Cyt b5) content, and DNA strand break had good correlations with TBBPA accumulation levels in the gill and digestive gland of C. farreri. Summarizing, these results enabled us to hypothesize several toxic mechanisms of TBBPA and select potential biomarkers for TBBPA pollution monitoring.
