Although the poultry production sector plays a key role in sustaining the majority of animal protein demand in Egypt, the deleterious effects of widespread antibiotic resistance on health and environment are currently not well recognized. Litter and dropping samples from broiler and layer poultry farms as well as, tilapia samples from the Nile River and aquaculture farms were collected from Upper Egypt. Samples were extracted and examined for tetracycline residues [tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DC)] using HPLC. In addition, tetracycline resistance genes [tet (M), tet (W), tet (Q) and tet (G)] were screened from pooled intestinal contents collected from twelve broiler farms in Upper Egypt. The antibiotic resistance genes results revealed that tet (W) was confirmed to be expressed in all intestinal samples. In contrast, tet (Q) and tet (M) were detected only in 42% and 17% of the samples, respectively. CTC and OTC were the antimicrobial compounds with the highest concentrations in poultry litter and droppings, with concentrations of 6.05 and 2.47 μg g−1 (CTC) and 5.9 and 1.33 μg g−1 (OTC), respectively. However, the concentrations of DC were significantly higher than those of the other compounds in both aquaculture and Nile River tilapia. The tetracycline residue levels in aquaculture tilapia were significantly higher than those in Nile River tilapia. The hazard quotients (HQs) exceeded 1 for OTC, CTC and DC, which highlights the great risk of using broiler litter to fertilize agricultural land. Moreover, the presence of DC and CTC indicates that consumption of aquaculture tilapia poses a considerable health risk. Therefore, poultry litter or droppings containing tetracycline residues and tet resistance determinants used for aquaculture or as farmland fertilizers could be major sources of antibiotic resistance in fish, humans and environment.

Frequently detected residuals of antibiotics in crops has drawn increasing attention from research community and the general public. This study was conducted under the controlled environmental conditions to investigate the uptake, translocation and distribution of three different veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in plants of Zea mays L. (maize, the third largest crop in the world, especially in China) and the associated mechanisms. The distribution color-maps of mixed-VAs showed that the highest RCF (root concentration factors) values of chlortetracycline (CTC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) were found in the 0.5–2.0 mm zone (cell division zone), while the highest RCF value of sulfathiazole (ST) was in the 6.0–8.0 mm zone (elongation zone) of root tips (0.5–10.0 mm) after 120 h of exposure to VAs. The translocation factor (TF) of CTC was greater than 1.0, but the TFs of SMZ and ST were less than 1.0 under addition of single antibiotic. However, the TFs of three VAs were all greater than 1.0 at the end of exposure under addition of mixed-VAs. The dissipation of antibiotics by maize was also demonstrated by harvesting all plant parts in an enclosed system. The possible mechanisms for uptake and translocation of VAs in maize were investigated by adding multiple respiration inhibitors into the culture solution. The RCFs of VAs were suppressed heavily by salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) and sodium azide (NaN3), which indicates that the uptake of VAs was an active process. The results of TFs and stem concentration factors (SCFs) of CTC and SMZ in HgCl2 treatments revealed that the translocation of VAs was associated with the aquaporin activity in maize. The findings from this study will have significant implications for the management of crop food contamination by VAs and for the development of phytoremediation technology for antibiotics in the environment.

This study investigated the efficacy of electrokinetic remediation of soils polluted with different concentrations of tetracyclines (TCs). Three widely used TCs (oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and tetracycline) were selected, and concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/kg (C0, C5, C10, C20, C50) were selected for comparison. Antibiotic-polluted soils with no electric field served as controls. The average removal rates of TCs in different treatments ranged from 25 to 48% after 7-day remediation. The contributing ratios of electrokinetics to TCs removal varied from 22 to 84%. The concentrations of NH₄⁺ increased in soils and electrolytes, which indicated the decomposition of TCs in the electric field. The highest removal amount of TCs was obtained in the C50 treatment, due to efficient reactions of TCs with oxidative radicals generated during the electrolysis. The fluctuant range of pH in the electrolytes was decreased with increasing concentration of TCs, while the soil pH was increased. The removal rate of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in the C5 treatment was significantly higher than that in other treatments. The abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) increased with the concentrations of TCs in soils. It might result from the induction of increasing selective pressure of antibiotics. Significant removal of ARGs occurred in the C50 treatment (38–60%). In terms of controlling ARB and ARGs, which were more resistant, the electrokinetic technology showed advantageous effects. Above all, electrokinetic technology provides an effective remediation method, especially for TC-polluted soil with a concentration of 20–50 mg/kg.

Spatial correlation of pollution of the water resource in Taipei, Taiwan, were examined by analyzing the antibiotic resistance patterns (ARPs) of 96 Escherichia coli colonies, which were isolated from 7 sampling sites in 3 river sections. The ARPs were the growth patterns of isolated E. coli colonies in the medium with seven kinds of antibiotics, including ampicillin, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, oxytetracycline, streptomycin, tetracycline, and salinomycin of different concentrations. The results showed that the survival rate of E. coli decreased with increasing concentration of antibiotics; however, various ARPs under different antibiotics of different concentrations significantly increased both the useful information and complexities. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and two-stage principal component analysis (PCA) were applied to analyze the spatial correlations and interrelations of distinct ARPs among sampling sites in this study. It was found that the seven sampling sites can be categorized into three groups which may represent three possible pollution characteristics.

The presence of tetracycline antibiotics (TCS) in the water and wastewater has raised growing concern due to its potential environmental impacts; thus, their removal is of high importance. In this study, a novel aluminum-based MOF/graphite oxide (Al-MOF/GO) granule was prepared as an adsorbent for the removal of TCS including oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC). The adsorbent was characterized via XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM, and XPS methods. The granules exhibited similar crystal structure and some new mesopores appearing compared to the parent Al-MOF/GO powder. In addition, the adsorption behavior of OTC and CTC on samples was explored as a function of initial concentration, contact time, pH, and ionic strength by means of batch experiments. The adsorption capacity reached to 224.60 and 240.13 mg·L⁻¹ for OTC and CTC, at C₀ = 60 mg·L⁻¹ as well as ambient temperature respectively. Moreover, the adsorption process of OTC and CTC on Al-MOF/GO samples can be better delineated by pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models. Besides, the adsorption mechanism over Al-MOF/GO granules was proposed, which could be ascribed to π-π interaction, cation-π bonding, and hydrogen bond. Finally, the great water stability, separation performance, and regeneration efficiency of these novel granules indicated their potential application in the OTC and CTC removals from aqueous solution.

The environmental and human health risk posed by veterinary antibiotics is of global concern. Antibiotic uptake by herbal plants has been studied, but little is known about perennial woody fruit crops. Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), a longevial fruit tree, is routinely fertilized with animal manure and, therefore, may be at risk of antibiotic uptake into its fruits. This study investigated the degradation of chlortetracycline and doxycycline present in manure used to amend orchard soil, and their subsequent assimilation by litchi plant, as affected by manure application rate. The results show that half-lives of chlortetracycline and doxycycline in soil were decreased by increased manure rate, with an average of 27 and 59 days, respectively. Chlortetracycline was readily transported to litchi shoots and increased with the growth of litchi plants. Doxycycline predominantly remained in the roots, and underwent growth dilution in the plants. The two tetracyclines could not be detected in fruits from litchi trees when applied with manures, at various rates, over 2 years. For litchi, chlortetracycline may pose human health risk through manure application, but doxycycline is unlikely to do so. Long-term field experiments are required to monitor antibiotic accumulation in fruits of perennial fruit trees fertilized with animal manure.
