Epidemiological studies on the impact of outdoor temperature to human health have demonstrated the capability of humans to adapt to local climate. However, there is limited information on the association between indoor temperature and human health, despite people spending most of their time indoors. The problem stems from the lack of sufficient indoor temperature measurement in the population. To overcome this obstacle, this paper presents an indirect epidemiological approach to evaluate the impact of high indoor temperature on mortality. The relationships between indoor-outdoor temperatures in different climate zones identified in the literature were combined with the outdoor temperature-mortality curves of the same locations to obtain the local indoor minimum mortality temperatures (iMMT), the temperature at which mortality is lowest, which by implication is the temperature at which the population is most comfortable on average. We show that the iMMT varies and has a weak linear relationship with the distance to the equator, which provides evidence of human adaptation to local indoor temperatures. These findings reinforce the adaptive comfort theory, which states that people can adapt to local indoor environment and establish their thermal comfort. Recognising the human adaptability to local climate will direct flexible and optimized policy to protect public health against extreme temperature events. This will also help reduce energy consumption for regulating indoor temperature without compromising the occupants’ health.

Urban heat island (UHI), an iconic consequence of anthropogenic activities and climate condition, affects air pollution, energy use, and health. Therefore, better understanding of the temporal dynamics of UHI is required for sustainable urban planning to mitigate air pollution under a changing climate. Here, we present the evolution of UHI intensity (UHIi) and its controlling factors in the Seoul metropolitan area, Korea, over the last 56 years (1962–2017), which has experienced unique compressed economic growth and urban transformation under monsoon climate. The analysis demonstrated an inverted U-shape long-term variation of UHIi with the progress of urban transformation and economic climate which has not been reported in Asian cities before. Meanwhile, short-term variations in UHIi are related to both diurnal temperature range and duration after rainfall event unlike previous studies, and the UHIi was exacerbated by heat waves. Our findings suggest that the UHIi will exhibit different temporal dynamics with future changes in the monsoon climate, and heat waves in the urban area will be reinforced if current rapid urbanization continues without a shift toward sustainable and equitable development. Asian cities that are likely to face the similar urbanization trajectory and the implications are that urban (re)development strategy considers changes in rainfall magnitude and timing due to monsoon system variation under changing climate and plans to mitigate synergy between heat wave and UHI in this area.

Atmospheric aerosols have been found to influence the development of planetary boundary layer (PBL) and hence to aggravate haze pollution in megacities. PBL height (PBLH) determines the vertical extent to which the most pollutant effectively disperses and is a key argument in pollution study. In this study, we quantitatively evaluate aerosol radiation effect on PBL, as well as assessment of surface cooling effect and atmosphere heating effect. All the data are measured at a site of Beijing from 2014 to 2017, of which PBLH is retrieved from micro pulse lidar and aerosol optical depth (AOD) from sunphotometer. Case study shows qualitatively that relative high aerosol load reduces PBLH, and in turn causes a high surface PM₂.₅ concentration. We preliminarily reveal the influential mechanism of aerosol on PBL. The influence of aerosol on the radiation flux of PBL is analyzed, with the correlation coefficient (R) of 0.938 between AOD and radiative forcing of BOA (RFBOA) and R = 0.43 between RFBOA and PBLH. Also, AOD is found to negatively correlate with PBLH (R = −0.41). With the increase of AOD, the cooling effect of surface is enhanced, and further impede the development of PBL. Due to aerosol-induced reduction of PBLH, near surface PM₂.₅ concentration surges and presents an exponential growth following AOD. Then, it is speculated and testified that the relationship between SSA (single scatting albedo) and PBLH would be determined by the location of absorbing aerosol within PBL. The upper PBL absorbing aerosol may decrease PBLH, while the lower absorbing aerosol appear to enhance PBLH. The study probably can provide effective observational evidence for understanding the effect of aerosol on PBL and be a reference of air pollution mitigation in Beijing and its surrounding areas.

Elemental concentrations of ambient aerosols are commonly sampled over 12–24 h, and the low time resolution puts a great limit on current understanding about the temporal variations and source apportionment based on receptor models. In this work, hourly-resolved concentrations of eighteen elements in PM₂.₅ at an urban site in Nanjing, a megacity in Yangtze River Delta of east China, were obtained by using a Xact 625 ambient metals monitor from 12/12/2016 to 12/31/2017. The influence of traffic activities was clearly reflected by the spikes of crustal elements (e.g., Fe, Ca, and Si) in the morning rush hour, and the firework burning and sandstorm events during the sampling periods were tracked by sharp enrichment of Ba, K and Fe, Ca, Si, Ti in PM₂.₅, respectively. To evaluate the advantage of hourly-resolved elements data in identifying impacts from specific emission sources, positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis was performed with the 1-h data set (PMF₁₋ₕ) and 23-h averaged data (PMF₂₃₋ₕ), respectively. The 4- and 6-factor PMF₂₃₋ₕ solutions had similar factor profiles and consistent factor contributions as the corresponding PMF₁₋ₕ solutions. However, due to the limit in inter-sample variability, PMF analysis with 23-h average data misclassified some major (e.g., K, Fe, Zn, Ca, and Si) and trace (e.g., Pb) elements in factor profiles, resulting in different absolute factor contributions between PMF₂₃₋ₕ and PMF₁₋ₕ solutions. These results suggested the use of high time-resolved data to obtain valid and robust source apportionment results.

Inhalation exposure to flame retardants used as additives to minimize fire risk and plasticizers is ubiquitous in human daily activities, but has not been adequately assessed. To address this research gap, the present study conducted an assessment of human health risk for four age groups through inhalation exposure to size fractionated particle-bound and gaseous halogenated flame retardants (polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs)) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) at indoor and outdoor environments (school, office, and residence) in three districts of a megacity (Guangzhou, China). Results demonstrated that OPEs were the dominant components among all targets. Indoor daily intakes of PBDEs and OPEs were 13–16 times greater than outdoor levels for all age groups. Gaseous OPEs contributed significantly greater than particle-bound compounds to daily intakes of all target compounds. Based on the different life scenarios, hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental life cancer risk (ILCR) from adults exposure to PBDEs and OPEs in indoor and outdoor settings were the greatest, followed by adolescents, children, and seniors. The estimated HQ and ILCR for all age groups both indoors and outdoors were lower than the safe level (HQ = 1 and ILCR = 10−6), indicating that the potential health risk for local residents in Guangzhou via inhalation exposure to atmospheric halogenated flame retardants and OPEs was low.

This study investigated the effects of pollution emissions on the bioreactivity of PM2.5 during Asian dust periods. PM2.5 during the sampling period were 104.2 and 85.7 μg m−3 in Xi'an and Beijing, respectively, whereas PM2.5 which originated from the Tengger Desert was collected (dust background). Pollution conditions were classified as non-dust days, pollution episode (PE), dust storm (DS)-1, and DS-2 periods. We observed a significant decrease in cell viability and an increase in LDH that occurred in A549 cells after exposure to PM2.5 during a PE and DS-1 in Xi'an and Beijing compared to Tengger Desert PM2.5. Positive matrix factorization was used to identify pollution emission sources. PM2.5 from biomass and industrial sources contributed to alterations in cell viability and LDH in Xi'an, whereas vehicle emissions contributed to LDH in Beijing. OC, EC, Cl−, K+, Mg2+, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Pb were correlated with cell viability and LDH for industrial emissions in Xi'an during DS. OC, EC, SO42−, S, Ti, Mn, and Fe were correlated with LDH for vehicle emissions in Beijing during DS. In conclusion, the dust may carry pollutants on its surface to downwind areas, leading to increased risks of particle toxicity.

The measurement of aerosols (PM₁.₀ and PM₂.₅) was conducted during 2016 and 2017 in Beijing, Tangshan and Shijiazhuang, investigating the spatial and temporal variations of aerosols and major chemical components. The WRF-Chem model was applied to simulate the impacts of aerosol direct and semi-direct feedbacks on meteorological factors and identify the source of PM₂.₅. The results showed that the average annual concentrations were 63.3–88.7 μg/m³ for PM₁.₀ and 81.3–112 μg/m³ for PM₂.₅ at the three study cities, and the average seasonal concentration ratios of PM₁.₀/PM₂.₅ ranged from 64.3% to 86.0%. PM₁.₀ and PM₂.₅ showed a good correlation that the squared correlation coefficients were all higher than 0.9, indicating both mainly came from the same emission sources. Water-soluble inorganic ions and carbonaceous components were major chemical species in PM₁.₀ and PM₂.₅, accounting for 48.9%–54.1% and 25.6%–27.8% in PM₁.₀, 48.1%–52.3% and 22.7%–24.7% in PM₂.₅. Those chemical species showed spatially similar characteristics but pronounced seasonal differences, with higher concentrations in autumn and winter, lower in spring and summer. Aerosol feedbacks had different effects on various meteorological factors. Three study cities monthly-mean incoming solar radiation decreased by 40.6 W/m², 82.2 W/m², 38.4 W/m², and 49.9 W/m²; planetary boundary layer height reduced by 54.0 m, 109 m, 32.2 m and 85.2 m; temperature at 2 m decreased by 0.5 °C, 0.8 °C, 0.5 °C and 1.3 °C; relative humidity increased by 1.5%, 2.6%, 1.3% and 4.7% in April, July, October and January, respectively, while wind speed changes were relatively smaller than above factors. Additionally, the major sources of PM₂.₅ in January were identified as transportation in Beijing, while industrial and domestic sources in Tangshan and Shijiazhuang. The obtained results will provide more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of aerosol pollution and management strategies.

Rapid development of Bohai and Yellow Sea Economic Rim has led to the concern of emerging contamination of marine environments. This study investigated the spatial distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in Bohai and Yellow Sea areas. A large scale sampling from Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and the major cities along the coastline from the mouth of Yalu River to the Yangtze River was performed. The spatial distribution of target ARGs based on the absolute abundances was in the trend of river water ≈ coastal water > the Bohai Sea > the Yellow Sea, inshore > offshore and inner bay > bay mouth. The total absolute abundances of selected ARGs in the coastal waters (1.23 × 10⁴–3.94 × 10⁵ copies/mL) were about 1–4 orders of magnitude higher than those in the sea (21.1–8.00 × 10³ copies/mL). The abundances of ARGs fluctuated greatly in the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas. Sulfonamide resistance genes hold the highest abundances in the Bohai and Yellow Sea (up to 2.13 × 10³ copies/mL of sul1 and 6.23 × 10³ copies/mL of sul2), followed by tetracycline and quinolone resistance genes, while qnrA hold the highest abundances in coastal areas (up to 3.66 × 10⁵ copies/mL). The distribution coefficients of target genes between sediments and corresponding water samples were more than 1.0 in the majority of different aquatic systems. According to the principle component analysis and redundancy analysis, water samples collected from the sea clustered together while those from the coastal zone and rivers were separated. Ammonium and nitrate played important roles in the distribution and variation of ARGs. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the potential multi-antibiotics resistant bacteria were detected with higher abundances in the Yellow Sea than in the Bohai Sea. These observations provided a comprehensive new insight into the pollution status of ARGs in the Bohai and Yellow Sea areas.

In the present study, the daily dose in terms of particle surface area received by citizens living in five cities in Western countries, characterized by different lifestyle, culture, climate and built-up environment, was evaluated and compared. For this purpose, the exposure to sub-micron particle concentration levels of the population living in Barcelona (Spain), Cassino (Italy), Guilford (United Kingdom), Lund (Sweden), and Brisbane (Australia) was measured through a direct exposure assessment approach. In particular, measurements of the exposure at a personal scale were performed by volunteers (15 per each population) that used a personal particle counter for different days in order to obtain exposure data in microenvironments/activities they resided/performed. Non-smoking volunteers performing non-industrial jobs were considered in the study.Particle concentration data allowed obtaining the exposure of the population living in each city. Such data were combined in a Monte Carlo method with the time activity pattern data characteristics of each population and inhalation rate to obtain the most probable daily dose in term of particle surface area as a function of the population gender, age, and nationality.The highest daily dose was estimated for citizens living in Cassino and Guilford (>1000 mm²), whereas the lowest value was recognized for Lund citizens (around 100 mm²). Indoor air quality, and in particular cooking and eating activities, was recognized as the main influencing factor in terms of exposure (and thus dose) of the population: then confirming that lifestyle (e.g. time spent in cooking activities) strongly affect the daily dose of the population. On the contrary, a minor or negligible contribution of the outdoor microenvironments was documented.

Particulate matter with diameters <2.5 μm (i.e., PM₂.₅) has multiple natural and anthropological sources. The association between PM₂.₅ and the exacerbation of respiratory allergy and asthma has been well studied, but the components of PM₂.₅ that are responsible for allergies have not yet been determined. Here, we elucidated the effects of aqueous and organic extract of PM₂.₅ collected during four seasons in November 2014–December 2015 in two cities (Kawasaki, an industrial area and Fukuoka, an urban area affected by transboundary pollution matter) of Japan on respiratory health. Ambient PM₂.₅ was collected by high-volume air samplers and extracted into water soluble and lipid soluble components. Human airway epithelial cells, murine bone marrow-derived antigen-presenting cells (APC) and splenocytes were exposed to PM₂.₅ extracts. We measured the cell viability and release of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 from airway epithelial cells, the DEC205 and CD86 expressions on APCs and cell proliferation, and TCR and CD19 expression on splenocytes. The water-soluble or aqueous extracts, especially those from Kawasaki in fall, had a greater cytotoxic effect than the lipid-soluble or organic extracts in airway epithelial cells, but they caused almost no pro-inflammatory response. Extract of fall, especially the aqueous extract from Fukuoka, increased the DEC205 and CD86 expressions on APC. Moreover, aqueous extracts of fall, summer, and spring from Fukuoka significantly increased proliferation of splenocytes. Organic extract of spring and summer from Kawasaki significantly elevated the TCR expression, and organic extract of summer from Kawasaki decreased the CD19 expression. These results suggest that PM₂.₅ extract samples are responsible for cytotoxicity in airway epithelial cells and for activating APCs and T-cells, which can contribute to the exacerbation of respiratory diseases such as asthma. These effects can differ by PM₂.₅ components, collection areas and seasons.
