Repellency potential of essential oils against housefly, Musca domestica L

In present study, the essential oils such as Mentha piperita (mentha oil, M.O), Cymbopogan citratus (lemongrass oil, LG.O), Citrus sinensis (orange oil, O.O), and Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus oil, E.O) were evaluated for repellency against housefly (Musca domestica) in a specially designed chamber. Further, to study any synergistic effect, essential oil combinations, i.e., M.O + LG.O, M.O + O.O, and M.O + E.O, were screened at 50:50 and 70:30 ratios. The results showed superior repellency of mentha and mentha + lemongrass (70:30) with RC₉₅ value of 0.009 μl/cm³. The other oils and combinations showed higher values of RC₉₅ (0.010–0.041 μl/cm³). The order of repellency was observed to be mentha = mentha + lemongrass (70:30) > mentha + lemongrass (50:50) = lemongrass = mentha + orange (50:50) = mentha + orange (70:30) > mentha + eucalyptus (70:30) > orange > mentha + eucalyptus (50:50) > eucalyptus. Chemical composition of selected essential oils indicated various monoterpenes as active components for efficient repellency. The essential oil of mentha marked the presence of menthol (38%) and menthone (27%) in major fractions, whereas citral (49%) was found dominating in lemongrass oil. Eucalyptus and orange oils showed the presence of 1,8-cineole (85%), and limonene (87%), respectively, as major components of oils. Further, monoterpenes (menthol and limonene) were also evaluated for repellency against housefly. The data showed 90 ± 5 and 60 ± 5% repellency from menthol and limonene, respectively, after 1 h, indicating the vital role of monoterpenes in overall efficacy of essential oil.

The development of natural plant extracts and essential oils will help to decrease the negative effects of synthetic chemicals. In the present study, the antifungal activity of individual and combined monoterpenes against Rhizopus stolonifer and Absidia coerulea was evaluated. The results from antifungal tests showed that eugenol, carvacrol, and isoeugenol, among all the tested compounds, exhibited strong antifungal activity against the two tested fungi. Furthermore, carvacrol exhibited the most toxic effects against R. stolonifer and A. coerulea, and the IC₅₀ values of carvacrol for the two fungi were 44.94 μg/ml and 50.83 μg/ml, respectively. The compounds (±)-menthol, b-citronellol, geraniol, 3,7-dimethyl-1-octanol, citral, and cuminaldehyde had only strong antifungal activity against R. stolonifer. In addition, the value of the synergistic co-efficient (SR) of a combination of isoeugenol and eugenol (1:1) showed an additive effect against R. stolonifer. The combination of isoeugenol and cuminaldehyde (1:1) showed an antagonistic effect against A. coerulea. Our results indicated that carvacrol and isoeugenol had potential antifungal effects against the two tested fungi and could be utilized in novel biological fungicide development.

The development of natural plant extracts and essential oils will assist to decrease the negative effects of synthetic chemicals. Many plant extracts and essential oils contain monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and aliphatic compounds. In the present study, the fumigation activity of 42 pure monoterpenes against housefly, Musca domestica, was evaluated. Results from fumigation tests revealed that ρ-cymene, terpinolene, (±)-menthol, thymol, carvacrol, (−)-carvone, (+)-camphor, (+)-pulegone, (−)-menthone, citral, (±)-citronellal, cuminaldehyde, and citronellyl acetate exhibited strong fumigation activity against M. domestica. Specifically, the compounds of (+)-pulegone, cuminaldehyde, citral, and ρ-cymene had a highest toxicity toward M. domestica with LC₅₀ values of 0.26, 0.60, 0.64, and 0.77 μl/L, respectively. The present results indicated that (+)-pulegone, cuminaldehyde, citral, and ρ-cymene are promising toxicants against M. domestica and could be useful in the search for new natural insecticides.
