Perfluorinated carboxylic acids in edible clams: A possible exposure source of perfluorooctanoic acid for Japanese population

We investigated the profiles and levels of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids in edible clams from five fishing sites in Japan (Hokkaido, Himakajima-Aichi, Atsumi-Aichi, Kyoto, and Kumamoto) and one site in Vancouver, Canada in 2017. The mean concentrations of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids with 6–15 carbon atoms (C6–C15) in edible clams from Japanese coastal waters ranged from 197 to 1757 pg/g wet weight, but were only 48 pg/g wet weight in clams from the site in Canada. Total perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid concentrations in clams collected in Japanese waters were 4–40 times higher than concentrations in clams from Canada. Perfluorooctanoic acid (C8) contributed 53% of total perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid concentrations in the clams from Japanese waters, which may be contaminated from terrestrial sources though river effluents, but was not detected in the clam samples from Canada. Principal component analysis separated shorter- and longer-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, suggesting differing emission sources or environmental fate. Consumption of clams may be an exposure pathway of perfluorooctanoic acid in the Japanese population.

Microplastics (MPs) in the marine environment are ubiquitous. The ingestion of these pollutants by marine organisms has drawn global attention. This work studies the distribution pattern and characteristics of MPs found in the body of the clam Donax cuneatus and its environment in order to understand the possible relationship between the MP concentration in the environment (water and sediment) and that in the clam’s body. Samples of D. cuneatus were collected from the coast between Vembar and Periyathazhai in Tuticorin district along GoM. MP concentrations range from 0.6 to 1.3 items/g (wet weight) in clams, 10–30 items/l in water, and 24–235 items/kg in sediment. Small-sized clams contain the highest concentration of MPs. Hence it is hypothesised that allometric relationship exists between body size and MP concentration, depending on the surface-area to volume ratio. MP abundance in clam body has a clear, positive, significant correlation with MP abundance in sediment but not with abundance of MP in water. Microplastics of fiber type with size 100–250 μm have a predominant presence in clams. The study identified ten types of polymers, of which polyethylene is the most common polymer in all sample types. FTIR-ATR spectra and surface morphology indicate that most of the microplastics have been strongly weathered. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis detected heavy metals associated with MPs like Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Fe. Filter-feeding clams like Donax sp. can provide valuable information on the spatial patterns of MP distribution, and so can act as bio-indicators in monitoring MP pollution in coastal areas.

Several biomarkers were measured to evaluate the effects of Trimethoprim (TMP; 300, 600 and 900 ng/L) in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum after exposure for 1, 3 and 7 days. The actual TMP concentrations were also measured in the experimental tanks. The total haemocyte count significantly increased in 7 day-exposed clams, whereas alterations in haemocyte volume were observed after 1 and 3 days of exposure. Haemocyte proliferation was increased significantly in animals exposed for 1 and 7 days, whereas haemocyte lysate lysozyme activity decreased significantly after 1 and 3 days. In addition, TMP significantly increased haemolymph lactate dehydrogenase activity after 3 and 7 days. Regarding antioxidant enzymes, only a significant time-dependent effect on CAT activity was recorded. This study demonstrated that environmentally realistic concentrations of TMP affect haemocyte parameters in clams, suggesting that haemocytes are a useful cellular model for the assessment of the impact of TMP on bivalves.

Plastic debris in the oceans is a major and growing problem in global environmental pollution. There are increasing concerns that plastic debris is a source of contaminant, either added during manufacturing or adsorbed from the environment. However, there is little information about the acute toxicity of leachates from plastic debris on marine organisms. In this study, we conducted experiments to evaluate the toxicity of leachates from two single-use polyethylene plastic bags (PB1 and PB2) with the embryo and larvae of the commercial clam Meretrix meretrix. Results showed that fertilization of the embryos was not affected by plastic leachates, but the developments of D-veliger larvae, including survival, deformity, and shell height, were significantly affected by plastic leachates from both PB1 and PB2 compared to the controls of filtered seawater. We speculate that compounds leaching from plastic bags are responsible for the observed toxicity. Therefore, leaching toxicity from plastic debris should be considered when assessing the risks of plastic pollution in the oceans.

This study analysed the levels of androgen receptor antagonist activity in extracts of coastal sediments sampled from estuaries in southern UK and northern France. Anti-androgenic (AA) activity varied between <0.2 and 224.3±38.4μg flutamide equivalents/g dry weight of sediment and was significantly correlated with the total organic carbon and silt content of samples. AA activity was detected in tissues extracts of clams, Scrobicularia plana, sampled from a contaminated estuary, some of which was due to uptake of a series of 4 or 5 ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Initial studies also indicated that fractionated extracts of male, but not female, clams also contained androgen receptor agonist activity due to the presence of dihydrotestosterone in tissues. This study reveals widespread contamination of coastal sediments of the Transmanche region with anti-androgenic compounds and these contaminants should be investigated for their potential to disrupt sexual differentiation in aquatic organisms.

Oysters and clams are abundant and popularly consumed seafood in Viet Nam. These bivalves were proved to be suitable bioindicators to assess the heavy metal accumulation in the aquatic environment. The study is to investigate heavy metals such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb in the cultured oysters Saccostrea glomerata and clams Meretrix lyrata collected in VanDon - Quang Ninh, and CatBa - Hai Phong. The results showed that the metal heavy concentrations in the oysters Saccostrea glomerata and clams Meretrix lyrata presented in the order of As > Cd > Pb > Hg. The most polluted concentration with As among four heavy metals studied in six sampling sites was 2.81 ± 1.07 and 1.6 ± 0.62 mg/kg wet weight for clams and oysters, respectively. Investigated heavy metals in cultured oysters and clams indicated potential risks for human health in future by assessment of the heavy metals.

Metal concentrations are reported for a seagrass ecosystem receiving industrial inputs. δ13C and δ15N isotope ratios were used to establish trophic links. Copper concentrations (dry mass) ranged from <0.01 μg/g in fish species to 570 μg/g (μ = 49 ± SD = 90 μg/g) in the oyster Saccostrea glomerata. Zinc concentrations ranged from 0.6 μg/g in the seagrass Zostera capricorni to 10,800 μg/g in the mud oyster Ostrea angasi (μ = 434 ± 1390 μg/g). Cadmium concentrations ranged from <0.01 μg/g in fish species to 268 μg/g in Ostrea angasi (μ = 6 ± 25 μg/g). Lead concentrations ranged from <0.01 μg/g for most fish species to 20 μg/g in polychaetes (μ = 2 ± 3 μg/g). Biomagnification of metals did not occur. Organisms that fed on particulate organic matter and benthic microalgae had higher metal concentrations than those that fed on detritus. Species physiology also played an important role in the bioaccumulation of metals.
