Recent studies demonstrated that the common pyrethroid insecticides are present in aquatic biota tissues. In this study, 123 samples of unhatched eggs of 16 wild bird species collected from 2010 to 2012 in Doñana National and Natural Park were analysed to determine 13 pyrethroids. This study represents the first time that pyrethroids are detected in tissues of terrestrial biota, 93% of these samples being positive to those pollutants. Levels of total pyrethroids ranged from not detected to 324 ng g−1 lw. The samples were characterized by stable isotope analysis. Species with diets based on anthropogenic food showed higher levels of pyrethroids and lower values of δ15N. Finally, we characterized the isomers of pyrethroids and discerned some isomeric- and enantiomeric-specific accumulations. In particular, tetramethrin and cyhalothrin showed an enantiomeric-selective accumulation of one enantiomer, highlighting the need to assess toxicological effects of each enantiomer separately to be able to make a correct risk assessment of pyrethroids in birds.

Temporal–spatial distribution of synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) in overlying water and surface sediments and ecological risk to aquatic systems were investigated, where paired water and surface sediments were collected during dry and wet periods in Guangzhou urban waterways. Eight target SPs (i.e., tefluthrin, bifenthrin, cyhalothrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, esfenvalerate, and deltamethrin), with cypermethrin and permethrin as major components, were ubiquitously detected in both water (dissolved and particle phases, separately) and sediments. Significant increases of ΣSP (sum of eight SPs) concentrations were observed in both water and sediment from the dry period to the wet period. The spatial distribution of SPs was mostly impacted by land-use type, with the highest ΣSP concentrations in the residential areas, which indicates the massive application of pyrethroids in household mosquito control. It is demonstrated that SPs preferred to be adsorbed to the particles, and rainfall-induced runoff was suggested as an important mechanism that moved SPs to the receiving waterways. A rising trend on sediment concentrations of SPs in the Guangzhou area in the last decade implied increasing application of pyrethroid insecticides, with cypermethrin and permethrin as the dominant components, where the contamination of SPs was positively related with urbanization rate (e.g., resident population and green coverage area). A special emphasis was placed on the potential effects of both individual SPs and their mixtures in three trophic levels (i.e., algae, daphnia, and fish) using toxic units (TUs) and risk quotients (RQs) for water and sediments. In spite of no acute effects due to SPs in the sediments, the toxic units showed daphnia as the most sensitive species in water, with acute risks to daphnia exhibited in several sampling sites. The risk assessment points out that a chronic toxicity (RQ index) caused by SPs in three trophic levels (algae, daphnia, and fish) exists, especially in Daphnia magna. Graphical abstract

Red cotton bug, Dysdercus koenigii (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae), has become the major insect pest of various crops, including cotton, and thereby reducing the yield qualitatively and quantitatively and synthetic insecticides belonging to different groups are the major control agents for such insect pests. A laboratory experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of different conventional insecticides, i.e., imidacloprid, deltamethrin, lambda cyhalothrin, gamma cyhalothrin and cyfluthirn on haemocytes of D. koenigii. The individuals were exposed to insecticides separately and data was recorded after 30 and 60 min of the exposure. The findings of current study depicted chlorpyrifos to be more effective and significant alterations in total haemocyte counts and differential haemocyte counts were observed in the cyfluthirn treated D. koenigii. In addition to this, cell structure was also disrupted as an immune response. Similar studies would also be helpful to understand the defence mechanisms of insects against the xenobiotics which will help to device efficient management tools for D. koenigii.

The insecticide λ-cyhalothrin was incubated with planktonic and biofilm cultures of the fungus Cunninghamella elegans. ¹⁹F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated that the compound was initially biosorbed to the biomass and more slowly degraded by the fungus. Furthermore, the presence of trifluoromethyl-containing metabolites was observed. Analysis of culture extracts by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified non-fluorinated metabolites that suggested the likely catabolic pathway. The hydroxylated metabolites were probably generated from the action of cytochromes P450 (CYPs), as the presence of CYP inhibitors resulted in the absence of biodegradation. Planktonic cells were measurably faster at degrading the pesticide compared with biofilm.

All locust epiphytic bacteria were screened and a total of 62 epiphytic bacteria were obtained from samples of Acrida cinerea. Via phylogenetic analysis, the 62 epiphytic bacteria were allocated to 27 genera, 18 families, 13 orders, six classes, and four phylums. Then, cyhalothrin degradation experiments were conducted, and the 10 strains that degraded more than 30% cyhalothrin and Paracoccus acridae SCU-M53 showed the highest cyhalothrin degradation rate of 70.5%. Furthermore, Paracoccus acridae SCU-M53 was selected for optimal cyhalothrin biodegradation conditions via the response surface method (Design-Expert). Under the optimum conditions (28 °C, 75 mg/L, and 180 rpm), the cyhalothrin degradation rate reached 79.84% after 2 days. This suggests the possibility that isolating biodegradation cyhalothrin strains from Acrida cinerea is feasible.

The current work was undertaken to test the genotoxic potential of chlorpyrifos (CPF), dimethoate, and lambda cyhalothrin (LCT) insecticides in rat brain and liver using the single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay). Three groups of adult male Sprague–Dawley rats were exposed orally to one third LD₅₀of CPF, dimethoate, or LCT for 24 and 48 h while the control group received corn oil. Serum samples were collected for estimation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx); the brain and liver samples were used for comet assay and for histopathological examination. Results showed that signs of neurotoxicity appeared clinically as backward stretching of hind limb and splayed gait in dimethoate and LCT groups, respectively. CPF, LCT, and dimethoate induced oxidative stress indicated by increased MDA and decreased GPx levels. CPF and LCT caused severe DNA damage in the brain and liver at 24 and 48 h indicated by increased percentage of DNA in tail, tail length, tail moment, and olive tail moment. Dimethoate induced mild DNA damage in the brain and liver at 48 h. Histopathological changes were observed in the cerebrum, cerebellum, and liver of exposed rats. The results concluded that CPF, LCT, and dimethoate insecticides induced oxidative stress and DNA damage associated with histological changes in the brain and liver of exposed rats.

Helicoverpa armigera is a major devastating insect pest on a wide range of vegetables and cash crops. Insecticides are presently indispensable for its control in nearly all crops. H. armigera has acquired resistance against almost all insecticides because of the activity of detoxification enzymes used for the defensive mechanism. The current research was carried out to evaluate the activity of detoxification enzymes, i.e., acetylcholinesterase and alkaline and acid phosphatases in chlorpyrifos-, bifenthrin-, lufenuron-, lambda cyhalothrin-, and emamectin benzoate-treated larvae of H. armigera. The maximum AChE activity was recorded in emamectin benzoate-treated larval samples followed by chlorpyrifos, lufenuron, lambda cyhalothrin and bifenthrin, respectively, while the highest alkaline phosphatases’ activity was recorded in emamectin and the lowest in bifenthrin-treated H. armigera. As far as acid phosphatases’ activity is concerned, the highest activity was noted in lufenuron samples while the lowest in lambda cyhalothrin samples, respectively. Comparatively, activities of alkaline and acid phosphatases were higher than AChE. The elevated activities of detoxification enzymes can possibly lead to increase in resistance development against synthetic chemical insecticides.

Pesticide contamination in the rice fields has manifested into a serious global environmental concern. Application of pesticides in the rice fields has deleterious effects on non-target organisms including nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria which help to maintain the rice field fertility. In the present research endeavor, the effect of lambda cyhalothrin (5 % EC), a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, has been studied on the growth and pigments content of Calothrix sp. (GUEco 1001), an indigenous strain isolated from rice grown areas of Brahmaputra floodplain. To study the toxic effect of lambda cyhalothrin, the test organism was exposed to varying concentrations of the insecticide i.e., 20 ppm, 40 ppm, 80 ppm, and 160 ppm based upon the determination of LC₅₀ for a period of 20 days. The result obtained in the laboratory showed a progressive decrease in the growth and pigments content by the test organism with increasing concentrations of the lambda cyhalothrin against time dose-dependent manner. At high dose (160 ppm), the test organism showed significant decrease in dry weight biomass (54.5 %), chlorophyll-a (68 %), carotenoids (38 %), phycocyanin (80 %), and nitrogen contents (55 %) over the control. A little but insignificant stimulatory effect on growth and chlorophyll-a contents was recorded in 20 ppm treatment of the insecticide that, however, was reversed in case of carotenoids and phycocyanin contents.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain GF31, isolated from a contaminated soil, can effectively degrade β-cypermethrin (β-CP), as well as fenpropathrin, fenvalerate, and cyhalothrin. The highest level of degradation (81.2 %) was achieved with the addition of peptone. Surprisingly, the enzyme responsible for degradation was mainly localized to the extracellular areas of the bacteria, in contrast to the other known pyrethroid-degrading enzymes, which are intracellular. Although intact bacterial cells function at about 30 °C for biodegradation, similar to other degrading strains, the crude extracellular extract of strain GF31 remained biologically active at 60 °C. Moreover, the extract fraction showed good storage stability, maintaining >50 % of its initial activity following storage at 25 °C for at least 20 days. Significant differences in the characteristics of the crude GF31 extracellular extract compared with the known pyrethroid-degrading enzymes indicate the presence of a novel pyrethroid-degrading enzyme. Furthermore, the identification of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid and 2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate from the degradation products suggests the possibility that β-CP degradation by both the strain and the crude extracellular fraction is achieved through a hydrolysis pathway. Further degradation of these two metabolites may lead to the development of an efficient method for the mineralization of these types of pollutants.
