Toxocara eggs in public places worldwide - A systematic review and meta-analysis

Toxocariasis is a neglected tropical disease of humans. Although many studies have indicated or shown that environmental contamination with Toxocara species eggs is a major risk factor for toxocariasis in humans, there has been no comprehensive analysis of published data or information. Here, we conducted the first systematic review and meta-analysis of current literature to assess the global prevalence of Toxocara eggs in public places (including beaches, parks and playgrounds). We conducted searches of the PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Science Direct databases for relevant studies published until 20 April 2018, and assessed the prevalence rates of Toxocara eggs in public places. We used the random effects model to calculate pooled prevalence estimates, with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and analysed data in relation to WHO geographical regions. Subgroup analysis and meta-regressions regarding the geographical and environmental variables were also performed. Of 2384 publications identified, 109 studies that tested 42,797 soil samples in 40 countries were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled global prevalence of Toxocara eggs in public places was 21% (95% CI, 16–27%; 13,895/42,797). The estimated prevalence rates in the different WHO regions ranged from 13% to 35%: Western Pacific (35%; 95% CI, 15–58%), Africa (27%; 95% CI, 11–47%), South America (25%; 95% CI, 13–33%), South-East Asia (21%; 95% CI, 3–49%), Middle East and North Africa (18%; 95% CI, 11–24%), Europe (18%; 95% CI, 14–22%), and North and Central Americas (13%; 95% CI, 8–23%). A high prevalence was significantly associated with high geographical longitude (P = 0.04), low latitude (P = 0.02) and high relative environmental humidity (P = 0.04). This meta-analysis of data from published records indicates that public places are often heavily contaminated with eggs of Toxocara. This finding calls for measures to reduce the potential risk of infection and disease in humans.

Seagrass meadows are complex social-ecological systems. Understanding seagrass meadows demands a fresh approach integrating “the human dimension”. Citizen science is widely acknowledged for providing significant contributions to science, education, society and policy. Although the take up of citizen science in the marine environment has been slow, the need for such methods to fill vast information gaps is arguably great. Seagrass meadows are easy to access and provide an example of where citizen science is expanding. Technological developments have been pivotal to this, providing new opportunities for citizens to engage with seagrass. The increasing use of online tools has created opportunities to collect and submit as well as help process and analyse data. Citizen science has helped researchers integrate scientific and local knowledge and engage communities to implement conservation measures. Here we use a selection of examples to demonstrate how citizen science can secure a future for seagrass.

Mitochondria play an essential role to supply the cell with metabolic energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). As a consequence, they are also the primary source of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can cause oxidative damage of individual respiratory chain complexes. Indeed, affected OXPHOS subunits result in decreases in ATP production and increases in ROS formation which generate oxidative phosphorylation deficiency leading to mitochondrial dysfunctions. It has been suggested that ROS play a vital role in the pathogenesis of mitochondrial diseases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which aimed to investigate the genetic variant effect of the antioxidant enzymes GSTM1 and GSTT1 on mitochondrial disease among a Tunisian population. In this report, 109 patients with mitochondrial disease and 154 healthy controls were genotyped by multiplex PCR amplification, and data were analyzed by SPSS v20 software. The results showed that GSTM1 null genotype was found to be associated with mitochondrial disease with a protective effect; however, no significant association of GSTT1 polymorphism with mitochondrial disease risk was revealed. But, interestingly, our findings highlight that GSTM1 active and GSTT1 null genotype combination increased by three fold the risk of developing mitochondrial disease with p c = 0.020, notably mitochondrial myopathy with p c = 0.046 and Leigh syndrome with p c = 0.042. In conclusion, this study suggests that GSTM1 active and GSTT1 null genotype combination might be a risk factor in developing mitochondrial disease.

Cadmium exposure is known to cause adverse health effects in different organs of the human body but whether the effects result in chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) remain inclusive. The present study, therefore, aims to examine the relationship between urinary cadmium levels and CMP. An observational retrospective cohort study was conducted in two areas having different levels of cadmium contamination for comparison. The subjects enrolled into the study were individuals ages 18 and above who have lived in the studied areas for 1 year or more. The evaluation of chronic pain was carried out using a questionnaire and urine samples were collected for analysis of urinary cadmium levels. The data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. The likelihood of CMP increased in a correlation with elevations in urinary cadmium from < 0.359, 0.359–0.753, 0.754–1.742, and ≥ 1.743 μg/g creatinine, adjusted odds ratio 1.07 (95% CI 0.62–1.86), 1.33 (95% CI 0.76–2.32), and 2.26 (95% CI 1.28–3.99) respectively. A positive association was found in our study between urinary cadmium level and CMP suggesting that cadmium exposure might cause neurological damage and/or tissue/muscle injury which in turn causing CMP.

Anthropic activities such as the emission of pollutants resulting from industrial and agropastoral activities promote several changes in urban and forest areas. Lichens are organisms that are used in air quality evaluations due to their sensitivity to these changes. The aim of this study is to analyze the presence of morphophysiological damages and the metal concentration in samples of the lichen Parmotrema tinctorum, in urban and forest areas, checking for possible parameter variations between these areas, in the different matrices and seasons in the Southern region of Brazil. Six areas were selected (urban and forest), assigned to the rural/urban and urban/industrial matrices belonging to the watershed of the Rio dos Sinos, Brazil. The following parameters were analyzed: Index of photobiont vitality (IPV), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll, carotene, and pheophytin) and metals (Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, and Ni) in the thallus of the lichen. The data were analyzed by an ANOVA one way, Pearson correlation test, and principal component analysis (PCA). Variations in the morphophysiological parameters were recorded in all the areas revealing significant differences. The lowest IPV values and highest concentration of metals were recorded in the urban environment, while low chlorophyll levels were found in the forest areas. The PCA showed a distinction between the areas and the season. The level of urbanization, vehicle traffic, and the weather conditions might have influenced the results. The use of P. tinctorum, the index of photobiont vitality and chlorophyll and pheophytin content, has proved to be an efficient tool to diagnose the air quality in the areas analyzed, allowing its use as a model in air monitoring studies, both in urban and forest areas, as well as in distinct matrices in the subtropical region.

The CO₂ injected into deep formations during implementation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture and storage (CCS) technology may leak and migrate into shallow aquifers or ground surfaces through a variety of pathways over a long period. The leaked CO₂ can threaten shallow environments as well as human health. Therefore, almost all monitoring programs for CCS projects around the world contain near-surface monitoring. This paper presents a U-tube based near-surface monitoring technology focusing on its first application in the Shenhua CCS demonstration project, located in the Ordos Basin, Inner Mongolia, China. First, background information on the site monitoring program of the Shenhua CCS demonstration project was provided. Then, the principle of fluid sampling and the monitoring methods were summarized for the U-tube sampler system, and the monitoring data were analyzed in detail. The U-tube based monitoring results showed that the U-tube sampler system is accurate, flexible, and representative of the subsurface fluid sampling process. The monitoring indicators for the subsurface water and soil gas at the Shenhua CCS site indicate good stratification characteristics. The concentration level of each monitoring indicator decreases with increasing depth. Finally, the significance of this near-surface environmental monitoring technology for CO₂ leakage assessments was preliminarily confirmed at the Shenhua CCS site. The application potential of the U-tube based monitoring technology was also demonstrated during the subsurface environmental monitoring of other CCS projects.

Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for US population aged ≥ 6 years for 2013–2014 were used to analyze data for four heterocyclic aromatic amines (HCAA), namely 2-amino-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole (AαC), 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhlP), harman, and norharman. Data were analyzed separately for children aged 6–11 years (N = 416), adolescents aged 12–19 years (N = 475), adults aged 20–64 years (N = 1913), and seniors aged ≥ 65 years (N = 458). Adult males had lower concentrations of AαC and harman than adult females (1.44 vs. 2.22 pg/mL for AαC, p < 0.01 and 136.8 vs. 163.2 pg/mL for harman, p = 0.04). Racial/ethnic differences were observed in the adjusted concentrations of HCAAs. For adults, adjusted concentrations of HCAAs were lower for non-Hispanic Asians and Hispanics as compared to non-Hispanic blacks and whites. For example for AαC, the adjusted concentrations for non-Hispanic Asians, Hispanics, non-Hispanic blacks and whites were 1.16, 2.00, 2.37, and 2.16 pg/mL respectively. Adjusted concentrations of AαC were found to be lower among nonsmokers as compared to smokers for adolescents (0.34 vs. 1.32 pg/mL, p < 0.01), adults (0.40 vs. 7.91 pg/mL, p < 0.01), and seniors (0.30 vs. 4.29 pg/mL, p < 0.01). For both harman and norharman, adult nonsmokers had lower adjusted concentrations than smokers (125.7 vs. 177.6 pg/mL, p < 0.01 for harman, 296.1 vs. 421.6 pg/mL, p < 001, for norharman). Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke was found to be associated with higher concentrations of AαC among adolescents (p = 0.01) and adults (p = 0.01) and for harman (p = 0.01) and norharman (p = 0.01) among seniors. In conclusion, concentrations of selected HCAAs can be several fold higher among smokers as compared to nonsmokers and gender as well as race/ethnicity also affect the observed concentrations of HCAA.

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate how to optimize gasoline in order to reduce the emitted pollutants caused by combustion, while the torque and power of the engine reach the maximum capabilities. To optimize gasoline formulation, an ethanol and magnesium oxide (MgO) or cerium oxide (CeO₂) mixture was added to gasoline. This study explores the role of main variables such as type of metal nanoparticle additive, engine speed, and throttle on engine performance and exhaust gas emissions through the modeling and optimization methods. Experimental design conducted through the implementation of D-optimal design, taking into account the three main parameters. To review the efficiency of this novel fuel, it was tested by a four-stroke engine connected to a dynamometer and an analyzer, under different controlled environments: speeds of 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 rpm at both half and full throttle conditions. The analyzed data are the power and torque of the engine, the amount of emitted CO, CO₂, HC, and NOₓ, the octane index, and the viscosity. The analyzed data were calculated and turned into models. Applying the models to data (the optimization process), close correlation between predicted and actual outcomes was found, highlighting the validity of the work. A secondary finding is that the CeO₂ mixture used at higher speeds and throttles produces less emissions, while lower speeds and throttles using the MgO mixture produce less emissions.

Ground-dwelling arthropod communities are influenced by numerous biotic and abiotic factors. Little is known, however, about the relative importance of vegetation structure and abiotic environmental factors on the patterns of ground-dwelling arthropod community across a wide range of soil salinities. Here, a field survey was conducted to assess the driving forces controlling ground-dwelling arthropod community in the salinized grasslands in the Hexi Corridor, Gansu Province, China. The data were analyzed by variance partitioning with canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). We found that vegetation structure and edaphic factors were at least of similar importance to the pattern of the whole ground-dwelling arthropod community. However, when all collected ground-dwelling arthropods were categorized into three trophic guilds (predators, herbivores, and decomposers), as these groups use different food sources, their populations were controlled by different driving forces. Predators and decomposers were mainly determined by biotic factors such as vegetation cover and aboveground plant biomass and herbivores by plant density and vegetation cover. Abiotic factors were also major determinants for the variation occurring in these guilds, with predators strongly affected by soil electrical conductivity (EC) and the content of fine particles (silt + clay, CS), herbivores by soil N:P, EC, and CS, and decomposers by soil EC and organic matter content (SOM). Since plant cover, density, and aboveground biomass can indicate resource availability, which are mainly constrained by soil N:P, EC, CS, and SOM, we consider that the ground-dwelling arthropod community in the salinized grasslands was mainly influenced by resource availability.

Disposal of carbonless copy paper (CCP) paper sludge during the 1960s contaminated a site in the USA with PCBs. Despite historic records of CCP sludge disposal and absence of evidence of any other disposal, a dispute arose among the parties over the source of the PCBs. Aroclor 1242 is well documented as the PCB mixture used in CCP, yet Aroclors 1242, 1248, 1254, and 1260 were reported by the analytical laboratory. How could the PCBs at a single, small site be reported as four different Aroclors? Some claimed that there had to be at least four Aroclors source inputs to the site. Disposal of four different Aroclors at this site would simply defy logic and the historic record. Weathering of the mixtures is part of the story. A larger issue is the conflict between the intent of the USEPA 8082 method to determine the total PCB content in environmental samples to facilitate environmental cleanup and disposal decisions within a regulatory context versus the data users’ intent to identify the PCB sources. This inappropriate extension of the data leads to erroneous conclusions. To mitigate problems like this, laboratory analysis requests need to be matched to the intended data usage; conversely, the data must not be over-interpreted beyond the limits of the method. The PCB analysis community needs to develop a better articulation of the limits of Aroclor identification for the broader community that may naïvely assume that if the laboratory reports “Aroclor 1248,” then someone must have placed Aroclor 1248 at the site. After all, when a laboratory reports “lead” or “chloroform,” those identifications are never in question.
