Sedimentary nitrogen (N) in lakes significantly influenced by eutrophication plays a detrimental role on the ecological sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. Here, we conducted a thorough analysis of the importance of N potentially released from sediments during the shift of “grass-algae” ecosystem in plateau lakes. From 1964 to 2013, the average total amount of sedimentary potential mineralizable organic nitrogen (PMON) and exchangeable N in whole Lake Dianchi were 5.50 × 10³ t and 3.44 × 10³ t, respectively. NH₄⁺-N was the main product (>90%) of sedimentary PMON mineralization. The PMON in sediments had great release potential, which tended to regulate the distribution of aquatic plants and phytoplankton in Lake Dianchi and facilitated the replacement of dominant populations. Moreover, NH₄⁺-N produced by sedimentary PMON mineralization and exchangeable NH₄⁺-N have increased the difficulty and complexity of ecological restoration in Lake Dianchi to a certain extent. This study highlights the importance of sedimentary N in lake ecosystem degradation, showing the urgent need to reduce the continuous eutrophication of lakes and restore the water ecology.

Large quantities of lead/zinc (Pb/Zn) mine tailings were deposited at tailings impoundments without proper management, which have posed considerable risks to the local ecosystem and residents in mining areas worldwide. Therefore, the geochemical behaviors of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings were in–depth investigated in this study by a coupled use of batch kinetic tests, statistical analysis and mineralogical characterization. The results indicated that among these studied PTEs, Cd concentration fluctuated within a wide range of 0.83–6.91 mg/kg, and showed the highest spatial heterogeneity. The mean Cd concentrations generally increased with depth. Cd were mainly partitioned in the exchangeable and carbonate fractions. The release potential of PTEs from tailings was ranged as: Cd > Mn > Zn > Pb > As, Cd > Pb > Zn > Mn > As and Cd > Pb > Mn > Zn > As, respectively, under the assumed environmental scenarios, i.e. acid rain, vegetation restoration, human gastrointestinal digestion. The results from mineralogical characterization indicated that quartz, sericite, calcite and pyrite were typical minerals, cumulatively accounting for over 80% of the tailings. Sulfides (arsenopyrite, galena, and sphalerite), carbonates (calcite, dolomite, cerussite and kutnahorite), oxides (limonite) were identified as the most relevant PTEs–bearing phases, which significantly contributed to PTEs release from tailings. A combined result of statistical, geochemical and mineralogical approaches would be provided valuable information for the alteration characteristics and contaminant release of Pb/Zn mine tailings.

Aquaculture has significant impacts on freshwater lakes, but plankton communities, as key components of the microbial food web, are rarely considered when assessing the impacts of aquaculture. Revealing the dynamics of plankton communities, including bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and zooplankton, under anthropological disturbances is critical for predicting the freshwater ecosystem functioning in response to future environmental changes. In the present study, we examined the impacts of aquaculture on water quality, plankton diversity and the co-occurrence patterns within plankton metacommunities in a shallow freshwater lake. The study zones are influenced by the 20-year historical intensive aquaculture, but now they are undergoing either ecological aquaculture or ecological restoration. Our results showed that ecological aquaculture was more efficient in nitrogen removal than ecological restoration. Moreover, lower bacterioplankton diversity but higher phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity were found in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones compared to the control zone. The lower network connectivity of the plankton metacommunities in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones indicated the decreasing complexity of potential microbial food web, suggesting a possible lower resistance of the plankton metacommunities to future disturbance. Furthermore, plankton communities of different trophic levels were driven under distinct mechanisms. The bacterioplankton community was primarily affected by abiotic factors, whereas the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were explained more by trophic interactions. These results revealed the impacts of aquaculture on the plankton communities and their potential interactions, thereby providing fundamental information for better understanding the impacts of aquaculture on freshwater ecosystem functioning.

Fish community manipulation and regulation has been largely overlooked as a mitigation strategy for restoring submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in shallow lakes of the middle and lower Yangtze River Basin (MLYRB). An in-situ fish exclusion experiment and a large-scale lake manipulation were conducted to test the hypothesis that the reasonable removal of benthivorous and herbivorous fish would facilitate the restoration and reconstruction of SAV in shallow lakes within the MLYRB. The in-situ exclusion experiment was conducted from April to October in 2017. Electrofishing was used to remove benthivorous and herbivorous fish from the exclosures. SAV were then artificially planted in the same pattern and density in both exclosures and adjacent open sites, and responses were measured for seven consecutive months. The mean percent coverage and biomass of SAV in the exclosures increased quickly and remained significantly higher than those in open sites over the duration of the experiment. Water quality also improved as turbidity, chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus and total nitrogen in the exclosures remained significantly lower than those in the open sites. After the in-situ experiment, a larger scale manipulation of fish in the entire submerged macrophyte zone (SMZ) was implemented from 2017 to 2020. After removing more than 2/3 of the benthivorous and herbivorous fish biomass by October 2020 in the SMZ, both the species richness and spatial coverage of SAV increased from 2 to 9 and from 1.7% to 32.2%, respectively. Our results provided clear evidence that fish are strong regulators of SAV productivity and that their reasonable removal facilitates ecological recovery. Therefore, we propose that fish community manipulation as implemented in this study be given more attention in addition to the reduction of external nutrient loading when designing projects to restore SAV in shallow lakes of the MLYRB.

Excessive nutrient discharges have resulted in pervasive water pollution and aquatic eutrophication. China has made massive efforts to improve water quality since 2000. However, how long-term policy interventions govern external and internal fluxes as well as nitrogen (N) concentrations is not well known. Here we examined the historical N concentration change and its key drivers in eutrophic Lake Dianchi (southwest China) over the period 2002–2018, based on monthly observations of water quality and external N fluxes, local surveys of mitigation measures, and process-based model simulations of internal N fluxes. Our data indicated that N concentrations peaked at 3.0 mg L⁻¹ in 2007–2010 but afterwards declined down to 1.2 mg L⁻¹ in 2018. Compared with 2010, the decline in lake N concentrations was attributed to reduced riverine N inflow decreasing by 0.20 g N m⁻³ month⁻¹ and the water-sediment exchange flux decreasing by 0.07 g N m⁻³ month⁻¹ from 2010 to 2018. Adoptions of wastewater treatment, pollution interception, and transboundary water transfer dominated the changes in external and internal fluxes of N and thereby the decline of lake N concentrations. These findings underscore the priority of reducing external discharge for historical lake water quality improvement and the need of enhancing internal N removal for future lake ecosystem restoration.

Inland waters emit large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to the atmosphere, but emissions from urban lakes are poorly understood. This study investigated seasonal and interannual variations in the partial pressure of CO₂ (pCO₂) and CO₂ flux from Lake Wuli, a small eutrophic urban lake in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, China, based on a long-term (2000–2015) dataset. The results showed that the annual mean pCO₂ was 1030 ± 281 μatm (mean ± standard deviation) with a mean CO₂ flux of 1.1 ± 0.6 g m⁻² d⁻¹ during 2000–2015, suggesting that compared with other lakes globally, Lake Wuli was a significant source of atmospheric CO₂. Substantial interannual variability was observed, and the annual pCO₂ exhibited a decreasing trend due to improvements in water quality driven by environmental investment. Changes in ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations together explained 90% of the observed interannual variability in pCO₂ (R² = 0.90, p < 0.01). The lake was dominated by cyanobacterial blooms and showed nonseasonal variation in pCO₂. This finding was different from those of other eutrophic lakes with seasonal variation in pCO₂, mostly because the uptake of CO₂ by algal-derived primary production was counterbalanced by the production of CO₂ by algal-derived organic carbon decomposition. Our results suggested that anthropogenic activities strongly affect lake CO₂ dynamics and that environmental investments, such as ecological restoration and reducing nutrient discharge, can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions from inland lakes. This study provides valuable information on the reduction in carbon emissions from artificially controlled eutrophic lakes and an assessment of the impact of inland water on the global carbon cycle.

Lake eutrophication has become a serious environmental problem in China. Manipulations covering more elements of trophic pyramid are methods for lakes to obtain clear water state and should be studied in detail. In the present study, Meishan Dongpo Lake was divided into two parts, and a combined biomanipulation project was conducted in one part (RLake), and the other part was used as a control (CLake). Species of submerged-plant, fish, macrobenthos, and zooplankton were screened and a certain number of them were added to adjust the eco-chain in RLake. After restoration, the coverage of submerged macrophytes reached >85%; zooplankton greater than 0.6 mm in size increased in number, and the ratio of zooplankton biomass to chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration increased. The dominant fish species changed, and disturbance of the sediment was reduced. The average density of mollusks in RLake was 111.5 ± 19.8 ind m⁻², which was much higher than that in CLake (36.7 ± 2.1 ind m⁻²). Water quality and clarity were substantially improved, and nutrient concentrations, particularly total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and Chl-a were significantly reduced. The aquatic community parameters were negatively correlated with the nutrient parameters and Chl-a. The ecological restoration have adjusted the aquatic ecosystem in RLake, and many positive feedback effects among the aquatic communities made them remove internal nutrients and Chl-a more efficiently.

A nursery experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential role of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in encouraging the vegetation cover on bauxite residue (red mud) sites. An alkali tolerant bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) adapted to local conditions were grown in red mud with different amendments with and without AM fungi to assess mycorrhizal effects on plant growth, mineral nutrition, metal uptake and neutralization of bauxite residue. Inoculation of AM fungi significantly increased the plant growth, nutrient uptake and reduced Fe, Al accumulation in plant tissue and also improved the soil physico-chemical and biochemical properties. Gypsum and sludge amended treatments inoculated with AM fungi had maximum biomass, nutrient uptake and reduced accumulation of metals. The neutralization of red mud was significant in presence of AM fungi than control. The experiment provided evidence for the potential use of bermudagrass in combination with AM fungi for ecological restoration of bauxite residue sites.

Anthropogenic activities significantly influence the lake environment and are reflected by the element contents in sediments/soils. The lake fragmentation provides a unique opportunity for comparing the influences of natural/anthropogenic activities of different wetlands systems. In this study, a complex and fragmented lake was investigated, and sediment/soil samples were collected from different systems. The nutrient contents (C, N, and P), stable isotopic compositions (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N), and trace metal contents (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the sediments/soils were measured to determine the natural and anthropogenic influences and pollution sources. Lake fragmentation was caused by insufficient water input and long-term agricultural and aquacultural activities of local residents. Due to the effect of anthropogenic activities, the enrichment conditions of various elements differed significantly for different wetland systems. Industrial, agricultural, and biological sources significantly influenced the element enrichment in different systems. The results demonstrated that the anthropogenic activities significantly influenced the sediments/soils in wetland systems, and the lake fragmentation reduced the diffusion of the contaminants. These results provide accurate reference information for pollution control, lake management, and ecological restoration.

The effects of maifanite on the physiological and phytochemical process of submerged macrophytes Hydrilla verticillate (H.verticillata) were investigated for the first time in the study. The growth index: plant biomass, root length, plant height and leaf spacing, and physiological and phytochemical indexes: chlorophyll, soluble protein, malondialdehyde (MDA), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) content and vitality of the roots of H.verticillata were tested. The results found that maifanite can significantly promote the growth of H.verticillata. The modified maifanite were more conducive to plant growth compared with the raw maifanite, and the MM1 group had the best growth promoting effect. The physiological and phytochemical indexes showed that maifanite can delay the aging process of H.verticillata (P < 0.05). The possible reasons for promoting H.verticillata growth were that maifanite can provide excellent propagation conditions for plant rhizosphere microorganisms, contains abundant major and microelements, and improve the sediment microenvironment. This study may provide a technique for the further application of maifanite in the field of ecological restoration.
