Nitrogen (N) addition can change physicochemical properties and biogeochemical processes in soil, but whether or not these changes further affect the transport and transformation of heavy metal speciation is unknown. Here, a long-term (2004–2016) field experiment was conducted to assess the responses of different heavy metal speciation in three soil aggregate fractions to N additions in a temperate agroecosystem of North China. The organic matter turnover time was quantified based on changes in δ13C following the conversion from C3 (wheat) to C4 crop (corn). Averagely, N addition decreases and increases the heavy metal contents in bioavailable and organic bound fractions by 27.5% and 16.6%, respectively, suggesting N addition promotes the transformation of heavy metal speciation from bioavailable to organic bound, and such a promotion in a small aggregate fraction is more remarkable than that in a large aggregate fraction. The transformations of heavy metal speciation from bioavailable to organic bound in all soil aggregate fractions are largely dependent on the increments in the turnover time of organic matter. The increase in organic matter turnover time induced by N addition may inhibit the desorption of heavy metals from organic matter by prolonging the interaction time between heavy metals and organic matter and enhance the capacity of organic matter to adsorb heavy metals by increasing the humification degree and functional group. Our work can provide insights into the accumulation, migration, and transformation of heavy metals in soils in the context of increasing global soil N input from a microenvironmental perspective.

Heavy metals contamination in agricultural soil has become a worldwide problem, and soil characteristics modulate metal availability in soils. Four field experiments were conducted simultaneously to evaluate concentration and distribution of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in 39 oilseed rape cultivars at four agricultural locations with different contamination levels of Cd and Pb, as well as the influence of soil characteristics together with soil total and bioavailable Cd and Pb concentration on metal transfer from soil to oilseed rape. Shoot concentrations of Cd and Pb in oilseed rape cultivars ranged from 0.09 to 3.18 and from 0.01 to 10.5 mg kg⁻¹ across four sites. For most cultivars, Cd concentration in root or shoot were higher than pod and lowest in seed, while the highest Pb concentration was observed in root followed by shoot and seed. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis allows for a better estimation of Cd and Pb concentration in oilseed rape while taking soil properties into consideration. The results demonstrated that Cd and Pb concentration in oilseed rape were correlated with soil organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), sand, soil total and available Cd and Pb concentration, and R² varied from 0.993 to 0.999 (P < 0.05). The Cd and Pb levels found in oilseed rape indicated its phytoextraction potential for Cd and Pb co-contaminated agricultural soils in winter without stopping agricultural activities.

Nitrogen (N) deposition may alter physiological process of plants in grassland ecosystem. However, little is known about the response mechanism of individual plants in alpine regions to N deposition. We conducted a field experiment, and three treatments including 0 kg Nha⁻¹year⁻¹ (CK), 8 kgNha⁻¹year⁻¹ (Low N), and 72 kg N ha⁻¹ year⁻¹ (High N) were established to simulate N deposition in alpine meadow of Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. Our objectives were to determine the influence of N deposition on photosynthesis of different functional types of herbage species in alpine meadow, and finally characterize the links of plant productivity and photosynthesis with soil nutrients. The results showed that responses of alpine plants were species-specific under N deposition. Compared with grass species Agropyron cristatum and forb species Thalictrum aquilegifolium, the sedge species Carex melanantha was much more sensitive to N deposition; a lower N load (8 kgNha⁻¹year⁻¹) can cause a negative effect on its photosynthesis and productivity. Additionally, N deposition can promote plant N uptake and significantly decreased the C (carbon)/N (nitrogen) ratio. Compared with CK and low N deposition, high N deposition inhibited the photosynthesis and growth of the forb species Thalictrum aquilegifolium and sedge species Carex melanantha. In all three functional types of herbage species, the grass species A. cristatum tended to show a much higher photosynthetic capacity and better growth potential; thus, suggesting that grass species A. cristatum will be a more adaptative alpine plants under N deposition. Our findings suggested that plant photosynthetic responses to N deposition were species-specific, low N deposition was not beneficial for all the herbage species, and N deposition may change plant composition by the differential photosynthetic responses among species in alpine grassland. Plant composition shift to grass-dorminant in alpine regions might be attributed to a much higher photosynthetic potential and N use efficiency of grass species.

Between 1920 and 1967, approximatively 8200 tons of ammunition waste were dumped into some Swiss lakes. This study is part of the extensive historical and technical investigations performed since 1995 by Swiss authorities to provide a risk assessment. It aims to assess whether explosive monitoring by passive sampling is feasible in lake-bottom waters. Polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) and Chemcatcher were first calibrated in a channel system supplied with continuously refreshed lake water spiked with two nitroamines (HMX and RDX), one nitrate ester (PETN), and six nitroaromatics (including TNT). Exposure parameters were kept as close as possible to the ones expected at the bottom of two affected lakes. Sixteen POCIS and Chemcatcher were simultaneously deployed in the channel system and removed in duplicates at 8 different intervals over 21 days. Sorbents and polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were separately extracted and analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. When possible, a three-compartment model was used to describe the uptake of compounds from water, over the PES membrane into the sorbent. Uptake of target compounds by sorbents was shown not to approach equilibrium during 21 days. However, nitroaromatics strongly accumulated in PES, thus delaying the transfer of these compounds to sorbents (lag-phase up to 9 days). Whereas sampling rate (RS) of nitroamines were in the range of 0.06–0.14 L day⁻¹, RS of nitroaromatics were up to 10 times lower. As nitroaromatic accumulation in PES was integrative over 21 days, PES was used as receiving phase for these compounds. The samplers were then deployed at lake bottoms. To ensure that exposure conditions were similar between calibration and field experiments, low-density polyethylene strips spiked with performance reference compounds were co-deployed in both experiments and dissipation data were compared. Integrative concentrations of explosives measured in the lakes confirmed results obtained by previous studies based on grab sampling.

Plastic film mulching is a common practice to increase crop yield in dryland, while the wide use of plastic film has resulted in ubiquitous phthalate esters (PAEs) releasing into the soil. PAEs in soil could be taken up and accumulated by dietary intake of food crops such as wheat, thus imposing health risks to residents. In the present study, samples from a long-term location-fixed field experiment were examined to clarify the accumulation of PAEs in soil and wheat, and to assess the human health risks from PAEs via dietary intake of wheat grain under plastic film mulching cultivation in dryland. Results showed that concentrations of PAEs in grains from mulching plots ranged from 4.1 to 12.6 mg kg−1, which were significantly higher than those in the control group. There was a positive correlation for the PAE concentrations between wheat grains and field soils. Concentrations of PAEs in the soil were in the range of 1.8–3.5 mg kg−1 for the mulching treatment, and 0.9–2.7 mg kg−1 for the control group. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were detected in all soil and grain samples, and DEHP was found to be the dominant PAE compound in grains. Based on DEHP concentrations in wheat grains, the values of carcinogenic risk for adults were higher than the recommended value 10−4. Results indicated that wheat grains from film mulching plots posed a considerable non-carcinogenic risk to residents, with children being the most sensitive resident group. Findings of this work call the attention to the potential pollution of grain crops growing in the plastic film mulching crop production systems.

The ecological and economic contributions of pollinator bees to agricultural production have been threatened by the inappropriate and excessive use of pesticides. These pesticides are often applied in areas with ecological peculiarities (e.g., the Neotropical savannah-like region termed as Cerrado) that were not considered during the product development. Here, we conducted field experiments with melon (i.e., Cucumis melo L.) plants cultivated under Brazilian Cerrado conditions and evaluated the impacts of botanical (i.e., neem-based insecticide) and synthetic (i.e., the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin and the fungicides thiophanate-methyl and chlorothalonil) pesticides on the flower visitation rates of naturally occurring pollinator bees. Our results revealed that both honey bees (i.e., Apis mellifera L.) and non-Apis bees visited melon flowers and the intensity of bee visitation was moderately correlated with yield parameters (e.g., number of marketable fruits and fruit yield). Pesticide treatments differentially affected bee species. For instance, Plebeia sp. bees were not affected by any pesticide treatment, whereas both A. mellifera and Halictus sp. bees showed reduced visitation intensity after the application of deltamethrin or neem-based insecticides. Fungicide treatment alone did not influence the bee's visitation intensity. Deltamethrin-treated melon fields produced significantly lighter marketable fruits, and the melon yield was significantly lower in melon fields treated with the neem-based insecticide. Thus, our findings with such pollinator bees reinforce the idea that field applications of botanical pesticides may represent as risky as the applications of synthetic compounds, indicating that these alternative products should be submitted to risk assessments comparable to those required for synthetic products.

Heavy metal removal by phytoremediation bears a great potential to decontaminate soils and Brassica juncea L. (Indian mustard) seems to be a possible candidate species for this purpose. A field experiment was conducted to compare the efficiency of eighty Indian mustard cultivars for phytoextraction of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) from bimetal contaminated soil. Our results indicated that total Cd and Pb concentrations in the shoots and roots were in the range of 2.43 ± 0.00 to 0.31 ± 0.02 mg/kg and 2.94 ± 0.05 to 0.44 ± 0.03 mg/kg and 5.33 ± 0.76 to 0.47 ± 0.20 mg/kg and 3.78 ± 0.06 to 0.16 ± 0.08 mg/kg. Significant differences based on the translocation factors indicated that root-to-shoot transfer is higher for Pb (3.87 ± 0.12 to 0.48 ± 0.03) than Cd (3.38 ± 0.05 to 0.22 ± 0.01). Furthermore, significant correlations between dry weights, Cd and Pb concentrations and uptake in both shoots and roots were observed, but translocation factor showed a negative correlation with roots, but not in shoots. Among 80 genotypes of Indian mustard IM-25, IM-13 and IM-65 for Cd and IM-79, IM-24 and IM-32 for Pb seems to perform well for phytoextraction. The results of the field experiment suggest that certain Brassica juncea L. cultivars are suitable for removal of Cd and Pb in low to moderately contaminated soils.

Dairy manure often has elevated concentrations of copper (Cu) that when applied to soil may create toxicity risks to seedlings and soil microbes. Manure application also increases dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil solution. We hypothesize that high rates of dairy manure amendment over several years will cause increased DOM in the soil that complexes Cu, increasing its mobility. To test this hypothesis, this study investigated water soluble Cu concentrations and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil samples from 3 years of manure-amended soils. Samples were collected at two depths over the first 3 years of a long-term manure-amendment field trial. DOC, Cu, Fe, and P concentrations were measured in water extracts from the samples. Ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) spectra were used to assess the DOC characteristics. After 3 years of manure application, extractable Cu concentration was approximately four times greater in the surface and two times greater in subsurface samples of manure-amended soils as compared to non-amended control soils and traditional mineral fertilizer-amended soils. The extractable Cu concentration was greatest in plots that had the highest manure amendment rates (35 t ha⁻¹ and 52 t ha⁻¹, dry weight). The UV/Vis parameters SUVA₂₅₄ and E₂/E₃ correlated with Cu concentration in the extracts (p < 0.05), suggesting that DOC characteristics are important in Cu-binding. The molecular characteristics of the DOC in the subsurface after 3 years of manure amendment were distinct from the DOC in the control plot, suggesting that manure amendment creates mobile DOC that may facilitate Cu mobilization through soil. The 10-fold increase in extractable Cu concentration after only 3 years of manure application indicates that repeated applications of the dairy manure sources used in this study at rates of 35 t/ha or greater may create risks for Cu toxicity and leaching of Cu into ground and surface waters.

Pot fisheries occur worldwide with a significant proportion of the gear becoming derelict. Derelict pots induce detrimental ecological and economic impacts, and more recently were found to reduce blue crab harvests in the Chesapeake Bay commercial fishery. We simulated the presence of derelict pots near actively fished pots in seasonal field experiments to quantify the effect derelict pots have on blue crab harvest. Derelict pots reduced harvests by 30% during the summer, but not during the fall. Female blue crab capture rates were consistently lower when derelict pots were present; while capture rates of the less abundant males were not negatively affected by derelict pots. Variable responses to derelict pots may be due to seasonal differences in female and male blue crab behavior and movements. The costly effect that derelict pots have on harvest should be investigated in other pot fisheries to recognize the magnitude and mechanisms behind these impacts.

In this study we examined the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals on microplastic through laboratory test and field test. We demonstrated that polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyamides and polyformaldehyde could adsorb lead, copper and cadmium in the simulating solution, and the heavy metals showed higher adsorbance on PVC and PP particles compared with PA, PE and POM. In the field experiment, the adsorption rate and concentration of heavy metals varied significantly among different plastic types and locations. The adsorbability of PP and PVC toward Pb and Mn was strongly correlated with the metal concentration in seawater. We also compared the adsorption quantity of PP to heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which resulted in an order of magnitude within one month. During the adsorption, the surface morphology of the microplastics which were washed and corroded by seawater underwent a rough-smooth-rough changing process, and different materials had great differences.
