Formaldehyde has been documented to be naturally present in many common foods. There has been a big public concern over the use of formaldehyde in the preservation of food. Also, it is commonly used as a chemical substance, usually in the life and can interact with many bio-substance in the human body. The present study target to investigate the protective effects of  Cymbopogon schoenanthus (CS) extract against the reproductive and carcinogenic effects of formaldehyde on male rats. The Albino male rats were divided into equal six groups, first group: rendered as a control group; second group: received formalin (100 mg/kg bw) and third group and forth group: were received SC extract at (50 and 100 mg) respectively; fifth group and sixth group were received formalin (100mg /kg bw) + SC extract (50mg) and formalin (100mg /kg bw)+ SC extract (100 mg) respectively. At the end of the experiment the animals were scarified and blood samples were collected for measurement all tested parameters. The results showed that the oral exposure to formaldehyde at a dose of 100 mg/kg bw resulted in significant negative effects in all tested parameters, while the CS extract at tow doses (50 and 100 mg) alone or in combination with formalin restored the negative effects to normal levels compared with the untreated group. The histopathological examination was studied on testis tissues and the histopathological pictures showed the CS extract at tow mention doses had ameliorate the adverse effects that induced by formaldehyde hazards.

India struggles with frequent exceedances of the ambient air quality standard for particulate matter and benzene. In the past two decades, India has made considerable progress in tackling indoor air pollution, by phasing out kerosene lamps, and pushing biofuel using households towards Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) usage. In this study, we use updated emission inventories and trends in residential fuel consumption, to explore changes in the contribution of different sectors towards India's largest air pollution problem. We find that residential fuel usage is still the largest air pollution source, and that the <10% households using cow dung as cooking fuel contribute ∼50% of the residential PM₂.₅ emissions. However, if current trends persist, residential biofuel usage in India is likely to be phased out by 2035. India's renewable energy policies are likely to reduce emissions in the heat and electricity sector, and manufacturing industries, in the mid-term. PM₂.₅ emissions from open waste burning, on the other hand, hardly changed in the decade from 2010 to 2020. We conclude that without strong policies to promote recycling and upcycling of non-biodegradable waste, and the conversion of biodegradable waste to biogas, open waste burning is likely to become India's largest source of air pollution by 2035. While our study is limited to India, our findings are of relevance for other countries in the global South suffering from similar waste management challenges.

Nitrous acid (HONO), an essential precursor of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the troposphere, plays an integral role in atmospheric photochemistry. However, potential HONO sources remain unclear, particularly in rural areas, where long-term (including seasonal) measurements are scarce. HONO and related parameters were measured at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) during the winter of 2017 and summer and autumn of 2020. The mean HONO level was higher in winter (1.79 ± 1.44 ppbv) than in summer (0.67 ± 0.50 ppbv) and autumn (0.83 ± 0.62 ppbv). Source analysis revealed that the heterogeneous conversion (including photo-enhanced conversion) of NO₂ on the ground surface dominated the daytime HONO production in the three seasons (43.1% in winter, 54.3% in summer, and 62.0% in autumn), and the homogeneous reaction of NO and OH contributed 37.8, 12.2, and 28.4% of the daytime HONO production during winter, summer, and autumn, respectively. In addition, the total contributions of other sources (direct vehicle emissions, particulate nitrate photolysis, NO₂ uptake and its photo-enhanced reaction on the aerosol surface) to daytime HONO production were less than 5% in summer and autumn and 12.0% in winter. Unlike winter and autumn, an additional HONO source was found in summer (0.45 ± 0.21 ppbv h⁻¹, 31.4% to the daytime HONO formation), which might be attributed to the HONO emission from the fertilized field. Among the primary radical sources (photolysis of HONO, O₃, and formaldehyde), HONO photolysis was dominant, with contributions of 82.6, 49.3, and 63.2% in winter, summer, and autumn, respectively. Our findings may aid in understanding HONO formation in different seasons in rural areas and may highlight the impact of HONO on atmospheric oxidation capacity.

Single-chemical thresholds cannot comprehensively evaluate the risk of chemical mixture exposure in indoor air. Moreover, a large number of researches have focused on short-term and high-concentration co-exposure scenarios related to different species, based on diverse endpoints, which hampers the application and improvement of existing risk evaluation models of chemical mixture exposures. More importantly, current risk evaluation models are not user-friendly for construction practitioners who do not have sufficient toxicological knowledge. Therefore, in this study, an inhalation experiment system and a hazard index (HI) were developed to investigate the risks associated with low-concentration and long-term inhalation exposure scenarios of formaldehyde and benzene, individually and combined, based on Drosophila melanogaster mortality. The results showed that the system exhibited good reproducibility in providing stable exposure concentrations during D. melanogaster life cycle. Furthermore, in a range of experimental concentrations, the interaction between formaldehyde and benzene was additive or synergistic, which was concentration- and ratio-dependent. This study is of great significance in harmonising and providing toxicity data under long-term and low-concentration exposure scenarios, which is beneficial for establishing a new user-friendly risk evaluation model for indoor chemical mixture exposures. It should be noted that the proposed HI value could indicate the hazard degrees of long-term inhalation exposures of formaldehyde and benzene, individually and combined, to D. melanogaster. However, the applicability of this index requires further experiments to evaluate the exposure risks of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to D. melanogaster.

As the logistics and plate capital of China, the sources and regional transport of O₃ in Linyi are different from those in other cities because of the significant differences in industrial structure and geographical location. Twenty-five ozone pollution episodes (OPEs, 52 days) were identified in 2021, with a daily maximum 8-h moving average O₃ concentration (O₃₋MDA₈) of 184.5 ± 22.5 μg/m³. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and aromatics were the dominant contributors to ozone formation potential (OFP), with contributions of approximately 23.5–52.7% and 20.0–40.8%, respectively, followed by alkenes, alkanes, and alkynes. Formaldehyde, an OVOC with high concentrations emitted from the plate industry and vehicles, contributed the most to OFP (22.7 ± 5.5%), although formaldehyde concentrations only accounted for 9.4 ± 2.7% of the total non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) concentrations. The source apportionment results indicated that the plate industry was the dominant O₃ contributor (27.0%), followed by other sources (21.6%), vehicle-related sources (18.0%), solvent use (16.9%), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)/natural gas (NG) (8.8%), and combustion sources (7.7%). Therefore, there is an urgent need to control the plating industry in Linyi to mitigate O₃ pollution. The backward trajectory, potential source contribution function (PSCF), and concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) models were used to identify the air mass pathways and potential source areas of air pollutants during the OPEs. O₃ pollution was predominantly affected by air masses that originated from eastern and local regions, while trajectories from the south contained the highest O₃ concentrations (207.0 μg/m³). The potential source area was from east and south Linyi during the OPEs. Therefore, it is critical to implement regional joint prevention and control measures to lower O₃ concentrations.

Asthma is a respiratory disease that can be exacerbated by certain environmental factors. Both formaldehyde (FA) and PM₂.₅, the most common indoor and outdoor air pollutants in mainland China, are closely associated with the onset and development of asthma. To date, however, there is very little report available on whether there is an exacerbating effect of combined exposure to FA and PM₂.₅ at ambient concentrations. In this study, asthmatic mice were exposed to 1 mg/m³ FA, 1 mg/kg PM₂.₅, or a combination of 0.5 mg/m³ FA and 0.5 mg/kg PM₂.₅, respectively. Results demonstrated that both levels of oxidative stress and inflammation were significantly increased, accompanied by an obvious decline in lung function. Further, the initial activation of p38 MAPK and NF-κB that intensified the immune imbalance of asthmatic mice were found to be visibly mitigated following the administration of SB203580, a p38 MAPK inhibitor. Noteworthily, it was found that combined exposure to the two at ambient concentrations could significantly worsen asthma than exposure to each of the two alone at twice the ambient concentration. This suggests that combined exposure to formaldehyde and PM₂.₅ at ambient concentrations may have a synergistic effect, thus causing more severe damage in asthmatic mice. In general, this work has revealed that the combined exposure to FA and PM₂.₅ at ambient concentrations can synergistically aggravate asthma via the p38 MAPK pathway in mice.

Commuters are exposed to a variety of physicochemical and microbiological pollutants that can lead to adverse health effects. This study aims to evaluate the indoor air quality (IAQ) in cars, buses and trains in Lisbon, to estimate inhaled doses while commuting and to evaluate the impacts of cleaning and ventilation on the IAQ. Particulate matter with diameter lower than 1, 2.5 and 10 μm (PM₁, PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), black carbon (BC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂) volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde (CH₂O) and total airborne bacteria and fungi were measured and bacterial isolates were identified. Results showed that the type of ventilation is the main factor affecting the IAQ in vehicle cabins. Under the fan off condition, the concentration of BC was lower, but the concentration of gases such as CO₂, CO and VOC tended to accumulate rapidly. When the ventilation was used, the coarse particles were filtered originating the decrease of indoor concentrations. Commuters travelling in trains received the lowest dose for all chemical pollutants, except VOC, mainly because railways are further away from the direct vehicular emissions. Commuters travelling in cars without ventilation received the highest inhaled dose for almost all pollutants despite having the lowest travel duration. Airborne microbiota was highly affected by the occupancy of the vehicles and therefore, the fungi and bacterial loads were higher in trains and buses. Most of the isolated species were human associated bacteria and some of the most abundant species have been linked to respiratory tract infections.

Microplastics pollution is a serious ecological threat, severely affecting environments and human health. Tackling microplastics pollution requires an effective methodology to detect minute polymer particles in environmental samples and organisms. Here were report a novel methodology to visualise and identify nanoscale (down to 100 nm) and microscale synthetic commercially-available uniform spherical polymer particles using dark-field hyperspectral microscopy in visible-near infrared (400–1000 nm) wavelength range. Polystyrene particles with diameters between 100 nm–1 μm, polymethacrylate 1 μm and melamine formaldehyde 2 μm microspheres suspended in pure water samples were effectively imaged and chemically identified based on spectral signatures and image-assisted analysis. We succeeded in visualisation and spectral identification of pure and mixed nano- and microplastics in vivo employing optically-transparent Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes as a model to demonstrate the ingestion and tissue distribution of microplastics. As we demonstrate here, dark-field hyperspectral microscopy is capable for differentiating between chemically-different microplastics confined within live invertebrate intestines. Moreover, this optical technology allows for quantitative identification of microplastics ingested by nematodes. We believe that this label-free non-destructive methodology will find numerous applications in environmental nano- and microplastics detection and quantification, investigation of their biodistribution in tissues and organs and nanotoxicology.

Some studies have indicated that formaldehyde, a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, can induce or aggravate allergic asthma. Epidemiological studies have also shown that the relative humidity indoors may be an independent and a key factor associated with the aggravation of allergic asthma. However, the synergy of humidity and formaldehyde on allergic asthma and the mechanism underlying this effect remain largely unknown. In this study, we aim to determine the effect of high relative humidity and/or formaldehyde exposure on allergic asthma and explore the underlying mechanisms. Male Balb/c mice were modeled with ovalbumin (OVA) and exposure to 0.5 mg/m3 formaldehyde and/or different relative humidity (60%/75%/90%). Histopathological changes, pulmonary function, Th1/Th2 balance, the status of mucus hypersecretion and the levels of inflammatory factors were detected to assess the exacerbation of allergic asthma. The levels of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), calcium ion and the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38 MAPK) were detected to explore the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that exposure to high relative humidity or to 0.5 mg/m3 formaldehyde alone had a slight, but not significant, affect on allergic asthma. However, the pathological response and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) were greatly aggravated by simultaneous exposure to 0.5 mg/m3 formaldehyde and 90% relative humidity. Blocking TRPV4or p38 MAPK using HC-067047 and SB203580 respectively, effectively alleviated the exacerbation of allergic asthma induced by this simultaneous exposure to formaldehyde and high relative humidity. The results show that when formaldehyde and high relative humidity are present this can enhance the activation of the TRPV4 ion channel in the lung leading to the aggravation of the p38 MAPK activation, resulting in the exacerbation of inflammation and hypersecretion of mucus in the airways.

This study aimed to provide a comprehensive characterisation of the indoor air quality during the sleeping period of 10 couples at Lisbon dwellings, using a multi-pollutant approach, and to understand how the compliance with legislation and guidelines was to assure a good indoor air quality. The assessment of indoor air quality was conducted in the cold season using real time monitors during the sleeping period for comfort parameters (temperature and relative humidity) and air pollutants (carbon dioxide – CO₂, carbon monoxide – CO, formaldehyde – CH₂O, total volatile organic compounds – VOCs, and particulate matter – PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), together with active sampling of bioaerosols (fungi and bacteria) before and after the sleeping period. Lower compliance (less than 50% of the cases) with the Portuguese legislation was found for temperature, CO₂ (3440 ± 1610 mg m⁻³), VOCs (1.79 ± 0.99 mg m⁻³) and both bioaerosol types. In 70% of the cases, PM₂.₅ (15.3 ± 9.1 μg m⁻³) exceeded the WHO guideline of 10 μg m⁻³. All bedrooms presented air change rates above the recommended minimum value of 0.7 h⁻¹, highlighting that a good indoor air quality during sleep is not guaranteed.
