The potential risk to human health of antibiotics that pass through the food chain has become an important global issue, but there are few reports on the response of ginger (Zingiber officinale) to antibiotic pollution. In this study, we investigated the enrichment characteristics and biological response of ginger to sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and ofloxacin (OFL) residues, which are common in the environment. Lower levels of SMZ, OFL and their combined duplex treatment (SMZ+OFL) promoted the growth of ginger, but the critical doses necessary to stimulate growth differed among treatments: 10 mg L⁻¹ SMZ, 1 mg L⁻¹ OFL and 1 mg L⁻¹ (SMZ+OFL) had the strongest stimulating effects. At higher dosages, the root growth and light energy utilization efficiency of ginger were impaired, and (SMZ+OFL) had the strongest inhibitory effect. Treatments with lower levels of antibiotics had no significant effect on reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities. However, when SMZ, OFL and SMZ+OFL concentrations exceeded 10 mg L⁻¹, the contents of H₂O₂, O₂⁻ and MDA continued to increase, while the activities of SOD, POD, CAT first increased and then decreased, especially in SMZ+OFL. Ginger accumulated more SMZ and OFL in rhizomes and less in leaves, and accumulation increased significantly as antibiotic concentration increased. When SMZ concentration was 1 mg L⁻¹, the SMZ concentrations in rhizomes, roots, and leaves were 0.23, 0.15, and 0.05 mg kg⁻¹, respectively, and the residual SMZ in the rhizome was 2.3 times higher than the maximum residue limit. The abundance of the resistance genes sul1, sul2, qnrS, and intI1 increased with increasing antibiotic concentrations, and intI1 abundance was the highest. OFL induced higher levels of intI1 expression than did SMZ.

This study describes the immobilization of ginger peroxidase on amino-functionalized silica-coated titanium dioxide nanocomposite and its application in bioremediation process. A dramatic enhancement in enzyme activity was observed after immobilization on nanosupport which was evident from the effectiveness factor (η) value of 1.76. Immobilization of enzyme on nanosupport was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Immobilized peroxidase exhibited higher activity in a broad range of pH and temperature as compared to free enzyme. Also, the thermostability of peroxidase was strikingly improved upon immobilization. After six repeated uses, the immobilized peroxidase retained around 62% of its dye decolorization activity. V ₘₐₓ of the enzyme was changed to 35.01 μmol L⁻¹ min⁻¹ from 8.42 μmol L⁻¹ min⁻¹ after immobilization on nanocomposite, which was a fourfold increase as compared to the free enzyme. Circular dichroism spectroscopy demonstrated conformational changes in the secondary structure of the enzyme, a possible reason for the enhanced enzyme activity after immobilization. Immobilized peroxidase was highly efficient in the removal of acid yellow 42 dye in a stirred batch process, i.e., 90% of the dye was decolorized within 1.5 h as compared to the free enzyme decolorizing only 69% of the dye in the same period. Our results clearly demonstrate that this nanobioconjugate with enhanced catalytic activity, high stability, and very good reusability has remarkable potential for the treatment of aromatic pollutants present in wastewater. Biochar compound fertilisers (BCFs) are an emerging technology that combine biochar with nutrients, clays and minerals and can be formulated to address specific issues in soil-plant systems. However, knowledge of BCF performance over consecutive crops and without re-application is limited. This study aims to assess the residual effect of organic BCFs soil-plant nutrient cycling 2 years after application and without additional fertiliser inputs. We applied BCFs and biochar with organic fertiliser amendments and established a crop of ginger and a second crop of turmeric (Curcuma longa) without re-application or additional fertilisation. All treatment formulations included bamboo-biochar and organic fertiliser amendments; however, two novel BCFs were formulated to promote agronomic response in an intensive cropping system. We report here on the effect of treatments on soil and plant macronutrient and micronutrient cycling and turmeric growth, biomass and yield at harvest. Both BCFs (enriched (10 t ha⁻¹) and organo-mineral biochar (8.6 t ha⁻¹) increased foliar K (+155% and +120%) and decreased foliar Mg (−20% and −19%) concentration compared with all other treatments, suggesting antagonism between K and Mg. Plants were limited for K, P and B at harvest but not N, Ca or Mg. Foliar K was dependent on the biochar formulation rather than the rate of application. Biochar-clay aggregates increased K retention and cycling in the soil solution 2 years after application. Clay blended BCFs reduced K limitation in turmeric compared to biochar co-applied with organic amendments, suggesting these blends can be used to manage organic K nutrition. All formulations and rates of biochar increased leaf biomass and shoot-to-root ratio. Novel BCFs should be considered as an alternative to co-applying biochar with organic fertiliser amendments to decrease application rates and increase economic feasibility for farmers. Applying BCFs without re-application or supplementary fertiliser did not provide sufficient K or P reserves in the second year for consecutive cropping. Therefore, supplementary fertilisation is recommended to avoid nutrient deficiency and reduced yield for consecutive organic rhizome crops.

Solar energy will assist in lowering the price of fossil fuels. The current research is based on a study of a solar dryer with thermal storage that uses water and waste engine oil as the working medium at flow rates of 0.035, 0.045, and 0.065 l/s. A parabolic trough collector was used to collect heat, which was then stored in a thermal energy storage device. The system consisted of rectangular boxes containing stearic acid phase change materials with 0.3vol % Al₂O₃ nanofluids, which stored heat for the waste engine oil medium is 0.33 times that of the water medium at a rate of flow of 0.035 l/s which was also higher than the flow rates of 0.045 and 0.065 l/s. The parabolic trough reflected solar radiation to the receiver, and the heat was collected in the storage medium before being forced into circulation and transferred to the solar dryer. At a flow rate of 0.035 l/s, the energy output of the solar dryer’s waste engine oil medium and water was determined to be roughly 12.4, 14, and 15.1, and 9.8, 10.5, and 11.5 times lower than the crops output of groundnut, ginger, and turmeric, respectively. The energy output in the storage tank and the drying of groundnut, ginger, and turmeric crops with water and waste engine oil medium at varied flow rates of 0.035, 0.045, and 0.065 l/s were studied. Finally, depending on the findings of the tests, this research could be useful in agriculture, notably in the drying of vegetables.

The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of aqueous extracts of ginger (GE) and rosemary (RE), both individually and in combination, on carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄)-induced liver injury in adult male rats. CCl₄ induced significant increase in liver enzymes, bilirubin, triglycerides, and total cholesterol while total protein, albumin, and globulin were significantly decreased. Also, the activity of cytochrome P₄₅₀ (CYP) and oxidative stress markers were found to be elevated with a concomitant decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes in hepatic tissue. Supplementation with extracts of ginger or rosemary effectively relieved most of the CCl₄-induced alterations when administered singly. The joint therapy of the two extracts was more effective. The histological investigation strongly confirmed the highly protective effect of the two plant extracts in the hepatocytes. These findings suggest that rosemary and ginger extracts are effective in improving both the function and structure of the hepatocytes through their potent antioxidant effect and point out to the possibility of using a combination of both as an adjunct therapy in liver diseases.

Occupational exposure to low-level ionizing radiation (<1 Gy) was shown to enhance cell protection via attenuating an established inflammatory process. Nicotine, a major toxic component of cigarette smoke, is responsible for smoking-mediated renal dysfunction. The present study was therefore aimed to investigate the protective impact of ginger Zingiber officinale selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with whole-body low-dose gamma radiation (γ-R) against nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity in male albino rats. Nicotine intoxication was induced with 0.5 mg/kg BW. Rats received 0.1 mg SeNPs/kg BW by gastric gavage concomitant with 0.5 Gy γ-R over 4 weeks. Characterization studies showed the formation of spherical SeNPs with a size ranged from 10 to 30 nm in diameter with a thin film encapsulating the nanoballs. Our data revealed that nicotine induced renal dysfunction manifested by significant abnormal levels of kidney function markers (creatinine, urea, sodium and potassium) accompanied by increased levels of malondialdehyde along with a reduction in glutathione level, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase activities. It is worthy to note that nicotine toxicity induced significant increments in serum inflammatory markers: tumor necrosis factor-α and vascular cell adhesion protein 1. Western blotting showed marked significant elevation in caspase-3 activities against nicotine. The mRNA gene expression of inducible cyclooxygenase-2 gene was highly increased with nicotine intoxication while that of cyclooxygenase-1 did not show any changes. Interestingly, our data demonstrated that SeNPs in synergistic interaction with γ-R are efficacious control against nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity via anti-oxidant-mediated anti-inflammatory activities. Thus, it is tempting to recommend dietary approaches with ginger SeNPs for smokers at workplaces exposed occupationally and regularly to low-level ionizing radiation.

Zingerone (ZO), one of the active components of ginger (Zingiber officinale), is a phenolic alkanone with antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Cisplatin (CP) is a widely used chemotherapeutic drug for solid tumors, but its therapeutic use is limited due to dose-dependent nephrotoxicity. In the present study, we investigated the ameliorative effect of ZO against CP-induced nephrotoxicity. Intraperitoneal administration of single-dose CP (7 mg/kg body weight) on the first day enhanced kidney lipid peroxidation and reduced antioxidant enzyme activities such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione (GSH). CP increased serum urea and creatinine levels and disrupted histological integrity while causing a decrease aquaporin 1 (AQP1) level in the kidney tissues. CP induced inflammatory responses by elevating the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-33 (IL-33) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and activities of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Moreover, it also caused oxidative DNA damage and activation of apoptotic pathway by increasing of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), p53, cysteine aspartate-specific protease-3 (caspase-3), and Bcl-2-associated x protein (bax) while decreasing B cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2). However, treatment with ZO at a dose of 25 and 50 mg/kg b.wt. for 7 days significantly decreased oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, and histopathological alterations while increased AQP1 levels in the kidney tissue. The results of the current study suggested that ZO as an effective natural product attenuates CP-induced nephrotoxicity.

The present study was designed to find the effect of natural and synthetic antioxidants on the performance of two broiler strains under high ambient temperature. A total of 320 day-old chicks of Hubbard and Cobb were reared for a period for 21 days under the same nutritional and management systems. On day 21 onward, one subgroup was kept as control while other subgroups were provided with vitamin E (250 mg/kg), ginger (2 g/kg), and L-carnitine (500 mg/kg) in basal diets. Body weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly (P < 0.05) high in vitamin E-supplemented birds, while feed intake was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in L-carnitine supplemented birds irrespective of the strain. Antibody titer against infectious bursal disease (IBD) and paraoxonase (PON1) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in vitamin E-supplemented birds compared to the other treatments. The number of heterophils and toal oxidant status (TOS) were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in vitamin E-supplemented birds. Blood glucose was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in vitamin E-supplemented birds, while total protein was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in vitamin E-supplemented group. In conclusion, the supplementation of vitamin E at the rate of 250 mg/kg improved the antioxidant status and immune response in the two broiler strains. Further, the two strains perform similarly in terms of performance and other health status parameters with no significant difference.
