Triclocarban (TCC) is used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, the intensive detection of TCC in aquatic environments and its potential risks to aquatic organisms are concerned worldwide. In this study, 8 Chinese resident aquatic organisms from 3 phyla and 8 families were used for the toxicity tests, and four methods were employed to derive the aquatic life criteria (ALC). A criterion maximum concentration (CMC) of 1.46 μg/L and a criterion continuous concentration (CCC) of 0.21 μg/L were derived according to the USEPA guidelines. The acute predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs) derived by species sensitivity distribution (SSD) methods based on log-normal, log-logistic and Burr Type Ⅲ models were 2.64, 1.88 and 3.09 μg/L, respectively. The comparisons of ALCs derived with resident and non-resident species showed that the CMC and CCC of TCC derived with Chinese resident species could provide a sufficient protection for non-resident species. The higher toxicity of TCC on aquatic organisms was found compared with other antimicrobial agents (except for Clotrimazole) in aquatic environment. The strong positive linear correlation was observed between the TCC and TCS concentrations in aquatic environment with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.8104, it is of great significance in environmental monitoring and risk assessment for TCC and TCS. Finally, the ecological risk assessment showed that the TCC in Yellow River basin and Pearl River basin had higher risk with the mean potential affected fractions (PAFs) of 9.27% and 7.09%, and 22.10% and 15.00% waters may pose potential risk for 5% aquatic organisms, respectively. In general, the risk of TCC in Asian waters was higher than that in Europe and North America.

An accurate estimation of population exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) is crucial to hazard assessment and epidemiology. This study integrated annual data from 1146 in-home air monitors, air quality monitoring network, public applications, and traffic smart cards to determine the pattern of PM₂.₅ concentrations and activities in different microenvironments (including outdoors, indoors, subways, buses, and cars). By combining massive amounts of signaling data from cell phones, this study applied a spatio-temporally weighted model to improve the estimation of PM₂.₅ exposure. Using Shanghai as a case study, the annual average indoor PM₂.₅ concentration was estimated to be 29.3 ± 27.1 μg/m³ (n = 365), with an average infiltration factor of 0.63. The spatio-temporally weighted PM₂.₅ exposure was estimated to be 32.1 ± 13.9 μg/m³ (n = 365), with indoor PM₂.₅ contributing the most (85.1%), followed by outdoor (7.6%), bus (3.7%), subway (3.1%), and car (0.5%). However, considering that outdoor PM₂.₅ makes a significant contribution to indoor PM₂.₅, outdoor PM₂.₅ was responsible for most of the exposure in Shanghai. A heatmap of PM₂.₅ exposure indicated that the inner-city exposure index was significantly higher than that of the outskirts city, which demonstrated that the importance of spatial differences in population exposure estimation.

Food dyes, or color additives, are chemicals added to industrial food products and in domestic cooking to improve the perceived flavor and attractiveness. Of natural and synthetic origin, their safety has been long discussed, and concern for human safety is now clearly manifested by warnings added on products labels. Limited attention, however, has been dedicated to the effects of these compounds on aquatic flora and fauna. For this reason, the toxicity of four different commercially available food dyes (cochineal red E120, Ponceau red E124, tartrazine yellow E102 and blue Patent E131) was assessed on three different model organisms, namely Cucumis sativus, Artemia salina and Danio rerio that occupy diverse positions in the trophic pyramid. The evidence collected indicates that food dyes may target several organs and functions, depending on the species. C. sativus rate of germination was increased by E102, while root/shoot ratio was ∼20% reduced by E102, E120 and E124, seed total chlorophylls and carotenoids were 15–20% increased by E120 and 131, and total antioxidant activity was ∼25% reduced by all dyes. Mortality and low mobility of A. salina nauplii were increased by up to 50% in presence of E124, E102 and E131, while the nauplii phototactic response was significantly altered by E102, E120 and E124. Two to four-fold increases in the hatching percentages at 48 h were induced by E124, E102 and E131 on D. rerio, associated with the occurrence of 20% of embryos showing developmental defects. These results demonstrated that the food dyes examined are far from being safe for the aquatic organisms as well as land organisms exposed during watering with contaminated water. The overall information obtained gives a realistic snapshot of the potential pollution risk exerted by food dyes and of the different organism' ability to overcome the stress induced by contamination.

Knowledge of distribution of toxic metal in crop is essential for studying toxic metal uptake, transportation and bioaccumulation, and it is important for environmental pollution monitoring. In this study, the macro spatial distribution of chromium in rice leaves was visualized by re-heating dual-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DPLIBS) and chemometric methods. After the optimization of two important parameters (delay time and energy ratio) in DPLIBS, chromium prediction model was established based on global spectra. The global model achieved acceptable performance while slight overfitting for model was found because of numerous irrelevant variables. Feature variables including emissions from chromium and other elements were successfully selected by the values of regression coefficient in partial least square regression model. Best performance was achieved by using the feature variables and support vector machine, with correlation coefficient of prediction of 0.959, root mean square error of prediction of 13.4 mg/kg and residual predictive deviation of 3.6. Finally, the distribution of chromium in rice leaves was visualized with the best prediction model. The distribution image showed that chromium distributed approximately symmetrically along the vein and was likely to be accumulated in leaf apex. The preliminary results provide an approach for investigating the macro spatial distribution of elements in crops, which is important for environmental protection and food safety.

Around the globe, worsening air pollution is spawning major public health and environmental concerns, especially in the poorest and most populous cities. As a major secondary air pollutant, ozone is a potential risk factor for exacerbated asthma, although the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. In this study, we aim to investigate the role of ozone on asthma exacerbation using a classic asthmatic model with allergic airway inflammation by treating Balb/c mice with ovalbumin (OVA). Our study shows ozone exposure significantly exacerbated OVA-induced asthmatic phenotypes, including serum immunoglobulin, Th cytokines, inflammatory cell counts, mucus production, airway remodeling, and airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR). Interestingly, expression of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member1 (TRPV1) was also significantly elevated in ozone-exacerbated asthmatic mice and that treatment with TRPV1 antagonist effectively suppressed AHR, airway inflammation and remodeling. The underlying mechanisms of these effects may be associated with suppression of neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an epithelial cell-derived cytokine. Base on the role of TRPV1 in allergic asthma, this study further revealed that inhibition of TRPV1 by TRPV1 antagonist has significant anti-inflammatory effects on ozone-induced asthma exacerbation in this study. Induction of TRPV1 expression may be an important mechanism underlying the increased risks for asthma after exposure to environmental pollutants.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential associations between air pollution and dry eye disease (DED). Data of outdoor air pollutants and meteorology as well as outpatient visits for DED were collected. A time-stratified case-crossover approach was used to analyze the associations between ambient air pollutants and outpatient visits for DED. Among the 5062 DED patients studied, 65.45% were female and 34.55% were male. In the single-pollutant model, significant associations were observed between an increase of 10 μg/m³ in the concentrations of fine-particulate matter with a median aerometric diameter of less than 10 μm (PM₁₀), fine-particulate matter with a median aerometric diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) and outpatient visits for DED. These results were consistent with those of the multipollutant model. The strongest associations between air pollutants and patient visits were observed during the cold season and in patients aged 21–40. The significant association between air pollutants (PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, SO₂, NO₂, and CO) and DED outpatient visits indicates the importance of increased environmental protection.

Forty soil and lichen samples and sixteen soil horizon samples were collected in the mining and surrounding areas of the Yamal-Nenets autonomous region (Russian Arctic). The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was used for the source identification of PAHs. The results of the source identification showed that the mining activity was the major source of PAHs in the area, and that the mining influenced the surrounding natural area. The 5+6-ring PAHs were most abundant in the mining area. The lichen/soil (L/S) results showed that 2+3-ring and 4-ring PAHs could be transported by air and accumulated more in lichens than in the soil, while 5+6-ring PAHs accumulated more in the soil. Strong relationships between the quotient of soil/lichen (QSL) and Log KOA and Log PL and between the quotient of lichen/histic horizon soil and KOW were observed. In addition, hydrogeological conditions influenced the downward transport of PAHs. Particularly surprising is the discovery of the high levels of 5 + 6 rings in the permafrost table (the bottom of the active layer). One hypothesis is given that the global climate change may lead to further depth of active layer so that PAHs may migrate to the deeper permafrost. In the impact area of mining activities, the soil inventory for 5+6-ring PAHs was estimated at 0.14 ± 0.017 tons on average.

Human activities lead to increasing concentration of the stable elements cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) and their radioactive isotopes in the food chain, where plants play an important part. Here we investigated Plantago major under the influence of long-term exposure to stable Cs and Sr.The plants were cultivated hydroponically in different concentrations of cesium sulfate (between 0.002 and 20 mM) and strontium nitrate (between 0.001 and 100 mM).Uptake of Cs and Sr into leaves was analyzed from extracts by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was increased with increasing external Cs and Sr concentrations. However, the efficiency of Cs and Sr transfer from solution to plants was higher for low external concentrations. Highest transfer factors were 6.78 for Cs and 71.13 for Sr. Accumulation of Sr was accompanied by a slight decrease of potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) in leaves, whereas the presence of Cs in the medium affected only uptake of K.The toxic effects of Cs and Sr were estimated from photosynthetic reactions and plant growth. In leaves, Cs and Sr affected the chlorophyll fluorescence even at their low concentrations. Low and high concentrations of both ions reduced dry weight and length of roots and leaves. The distribution of the elements between the different tissues of leaves and roots was investigated using Energy Dispersive X-Ray microanalysis (EDX) with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Overall, observations suggested differential patterns in accumulating Cs and Sr within the roots and leaves. When present in higher concentrations the amount of Cs and Sr transferred from environment to plants was sufficient to affect some physiological processes. The experimental model showed a potential for P. major to study the influence of radioactive contaminants and their removal from hotspots.

Natural environments are receiving an increasing number of contaminants. Therefore, the evaluation and identification of early responses to pollution in these complex habitats is an urgent and challenging task. Doñana National Park (DNP, SW Spain) has been widely used as a model area for environmental studies because, despite its strictly protected core, it is surrounded by numerous threat sources from agricultural, mining and industrial activities. Since many pollutants often induce oxidative stress, redox proteomics was used to detect redox-based variations within the proteome of Mus spretus mice captured in DNP and the surrounding areas. Functional analysis showed that most differentially oxidized proteins are involved in the maintenance of homeostasis, by eliciting mechanisms to respond to toxic substances and oxidative stress, such as antioxidant and biotransformation processes, immune and inflammatory responses, and blood coagulation. Furthermore, changes in the overall protein abundance were also analysed by label-free quantitative proteomics. The upregulation of phase I and II biotransformation enzymes in mice from Lucio del Palacio may be an alert for organic pollution in the area located at the heart of DNP. Metabolic processes involved in protein turnover (proteolysis, amino acid catabolism, new protein biosynthesis and folding) were activated in response to oxidative damage to these biomolecules. Consequently, aerobic respiratory metabolism increased to address the greater ATP demands. Alterations of cholesterol metabolism that could cause hepatic steatosis were also detected. The proteomic detection of globally altered metabolic and physiological processes offers a complete view of the main biological changes caused by environmental pollution in complex habitats.

Gong, Wenwen | Jiang, Mengyun | Han, Ping | Liang, Gang | Zhang, Tingting | Liu, Guannan
Biodegradable plastics have been introduced and widely used as a promising alternative to traditional nondegradable plastics. However, the differences in sorption behavior of pesticides on nondegradable and biodegradable microplastics has been insufficiently studied. Here, four types of nondegradable [polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP)] and two types of biodegradable [polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS)] microplastics were selected to investigate the sorption mechanism of fipronil based on their sorption kinetics and isotherms. The results indicated that the sorption rates of PLA and PBS were much higher than those of PE, PP, PVC and PS and that the sorption capacities of fipronil on microplastics followed the order of PBS > PLA > PP > PE > PS > PVC. The sorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics model (R² = 0.953–0.998) for all tested microplastics. External mass transport and intraparticle diffusion were the main rate controlling steps of the sorption of fipronil on microplastics. Furthermore, isotherm results indicated that a Langmuir model provided the best fit for fipronil sorption on PE, PS, PVC and PP (R² = 0.997–0.999), while a Freundlich model was the most appropriate model for PLA and PBS (R² = 0.998–0.999). The presence of surface O-containing functional groups and the spatial arrangement of rubbery domains are likely to affect the sorption process. The results from this work suggest that microplastics, especially biodegradable ones, may play an important role in the fate and transport of pesticides, and their effects on soil organisms (e.g., earthworms) require further investigation.
