Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal found in tobacco, air and food. Recent cross-sectional studies have suggested that Cd negatively impacts physical performance, but the prospective association is uncertain.We used data from 2548 older adults from the Seniors-ENRICA II cohort in Madrid, Spain. Whole blood Cd levels were measured at baseline using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. At baseline (2017) and follow-up (2019), overall physical function was evaluated using the physical component summary (PCS) of the SF 12-Item Health questionnaire, lower-extremity performance with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), muscle weakness with a hand dynamometer, and frailty with a Deficit Accumulation index. Mobility limitations and disability in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were ascertained with standardized questionnaires. Analyses were adjusted for relevant confounders, including tobacco smoke, number of cigarettes smoked per day and time since cessation in former smokers.In cross-sectional analyses, odds ratios (95% confidence interval) per two-fold increase in blood Cd were 1.16 (1.03; 1.31) for low PCS scores, 1.08 (0.97; 1.20) for impaired lower-extremity performance, 1.10 (0.98; 1.23) for low grip strength, 1.11 (1.02; 1.20) for mobility limitations, 1.16 (1.02; 1.31) for frailty, and 1.26 (1.08; 1.47) for IADL disability. In longitudinal analyses, corresponding hazard ratios were 1.25 (1.03; 1.51) for low PCS scores, 1.14 (1.03; 1.27) for impaired lower-extremity performance, 1.02 (0.92; 1.13) for low grip strength, 1.03 (0.91; 1.16) for mobility limitations, and 1.16 (1.00; 1.35) for frailty. All the associations where consistent when current smokers were excluded from the analyses.Our results support the role of Cd as a risk factor for physical function impairments in older adults.

The present paper reports on the interrelationships of fish, parasites and the bioaccumulation of hazardous organic compounds in the Zemplínska Šírava water reservoir in eastern Slovakia, which is heavily polluted with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The concentrations of these contaminants were measured in various fish matrices (dorsal and abdominal muscle tissues, hepatopancreas, intestine wall and adipose tissue) of the freshwater bream, Abramis brama (Cyprinidae), and in its intestinal parasite Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Cestoda), which was used for the first time as a model for a PCB bioaccumulation study. Regarding the fish, the highest concentrations of PCBs were found in the intestine, followed by hepatopancreas and muscle tissues. The amounts of PCBs were higher in abdominal muscles than in their dorsal parts. Concentrations of ∑PCBs above the limits set by European regulations were detected in both muscle parts in the fish, confirming the persistent unfavorable conditions in this locality and high risk for biota and humans. Based on bioconcentration factor values (BCFs), PCBs reached much higher levels in cestodes compared to bream matrices. Some significant differences in PCB amounts between infected and uninfected bream were determined. Fulton's condition factor (CF) significantly differed in infected and non-infected fish (p ˂ 0.05), with CF values surprisingly lower in fish free of parasites compared to parasitized fish, which suggests a “mutualistic” relationship between the parasite and its host.

Tissue distribution of legacy and emerging per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in several kinds of edible fishes collected from Meiliang bay of Taihu Lake, China were investigated and the related human health risks were assessed. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer phosphate diester (6:2 diPAP) were the most abundant legacy perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA), PFOS related precursor (PreFOS), and the emerging PFASs in all fish tissues, respectively. Similar to the legacy PFAAs, 6:2 diPAP and 6:6 perfluorophosphinate (6:6 PFPiA) had the highest levels in the fish liver, whereas the highest level of PFOSA was in kidney, which might be due to its intensive transformation in fish liver. The concentrations of PFASs were generally positively correlated with the trophic levels. The profiles of PFASs were significantly different among bitterling, crucian and other fish, which might be related to their different metabolic capacities. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of PreFOSs, 6:2 diPAP, and 6:6 PFPiA were lower than those of PFAAs with the same number of perfluorinated carbons. The calculated hazard ratios (HR) of PFOS (Range: 0.0100–0.655) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (<0.00200) in all fish muscles were less than 1.0. However, the HR of the ∑PFASs in crucian muscle was 1.04, which implied that frequent consumption of crucian collected from Meiliang Bay might pose potential risks to human health.

Selenium (Se) is both an essential micronutrient and a contaminant of concern that is of particular interest in mining-influenced waterbodies in Canada. The objective of this research was to characterize the trophic dynamics of selenium along a gradient of exposure concentrations in a Canadian boreal lake ecosystem. From June 20 to August 22, 2018, six limnocorrals (littoral, ∼3000 L enclosures) were spiked with mean measured concentrations of 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.4, 5.6 and 7.9 μg Se/L as selenite, and three limnocorrals served as untreated controls (background aqueous Se = 0.08–0.09 μg/L). Total Se (TSe) concentrations in water, periphyton, phytoplankton, sediment, benthic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton and female finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus; added on day 21 of the experiment) were measured throughout and at the end of the experiment. Total Se bioaccumulation by organisms was generally non-linear. Greater uptake by phytoplankton than periphyton was observed. Taxonomic differences in accumulation of TSe by invertebrates (Heptageniidae = Chironomidae > zooplankton) were observed as well. Fish muscle and ovary tissue TSe bioaccumulation was more variable than that at lower trophic levels and uptake patterns indicated that fish did not reach steady state concentrations. This research provides field-derived models for the uptake of Se by algae and invertebrates, and contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics of TSe bioaccumulation over a gradient of exposure concentrations in cold-water lentic systems.

The occurrence and distribution of cyclic and linear siloxanes were investigated in South Korean river water and sediment, with a special focus on crucian carp tissues, to evaluate the residual status and potential bioaccumulation of siloxanes. The total siloxanes median concentrations observed in this study were 1495 ng/L in river water, 39.2 ng/g-dry weight [dw] in sediment, and 41.7 ng/g-wet weight [ww] in crucian carp muscle. Cyclic siloxanes (D3–D6) were predominant in all matrices, and D5 (mean: > 81%) was more abundant in biota tissues than in river water (30%) and sediment (26%) samples. Specifically, positive correlations between D5 concentrations and crucian carp sizes (p < 0.01, Spearman) as well as the relatively high estimated biota-sediment accumulation factor value of D5 (D5: 2.31), suggest the high bioaccumulative property of D5 in biota. However, no bioaccumulation potentials were observed for D3, D4, D6, and L3–L17 in this field-scale study. The distributions of major linear siloxanes (L7–L14) in crucian carp gills (17%) and gonads (21%) were higher than in other tissues (brain, 9.6%; liver, 2.6%; muscle, 1.5%). Moreover, relatively high tissue/plasma ratios were observed for linear siloxanes (L7–L10: 1.79–2.12) compared to cyclic siloxanes (D4–D6: 0.829–1.18) (p < 0.01, Mann Whitney U test), which indicated the higher transportability of linear siloxanes to fish tissues than cyclic siloxanes.

and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitously detected all around the world. Herein, for the first time, concentrations of 16 selected legacy and emerging PFASs are reported for sediment and edible fish collected from the Saudi Arabian Red Sea. Mean concentrations varied from 0.57 to 2.6 μg kg⁻¹ dry weight (dw) in sediment, 3.89–7.63 μg kg⁻¹ dw in fish muscle, and 17.9–58.5 μg kg⁻¹ dw in fish liver. Wastewater treatment plant effluents represented the main source of these compounds and contributed to the exposure of PFAS to biota. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant compound in sediment and fish tissues analysed, comprising between 42 and 99% of the ∑₁₆PFAS. The short chain perfluorobutanoate (PFBA) was the second most dominant compound in sediment and was detected at a maximum concentration of 0.64 μg kg⁻¹ dw. PFAS levels and patterns differed between tissues of investigated fish species. Across all fish species, ∑₁₆PFAS concentrations in liver were significantly higher than in muscle by a factor ranging from 3 to 7 depending on fish species and size. The PFOS replacements fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) exhibited a bioaccumulation potential in several fish species and 6:2 FTS, was detected at a maximum concentration of 7.1 ± 3.3 μg kg⁻¹ dw in a doublespotted queenfish (Scomberoides lysan) liver. PFBS was detected at a maximum concentration of 2.65 μg kg⁻¹ dw in strong spine silver-biddy (Gerres longirostris) liver. The calculated dietary intake of PFOS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) exceeded the safety threshold established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2020 in doublespotted queenfish muscle, indicating a potential health risk to humans consuming this fish in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Maricultured organisms are chronically exposed to water containing antibiotics but the bioaccumulative behavior of antibiotics in exposed organisms at different growth stages has received little attention. Here, we investigated the concentrations and tissue-specific bioaccumulation characteristics of 19 antibiotics during three growth stages (youth stage, growth stage, and adult stage) of various organisms (Scophthalmus maximus, Penaeus vannamei, Penaeus japonicus, and Apostichopus japonicus) cultivated in typical marine aquaculture regions, and explored the factors that could affect the bioaccumulation of antibiotics. Tetracyclines (TCs) and fluoroquinolones (FQs) were the dominant antibiotics in all organisms, and the total concentrations of the target antibiotics in fish (S. maximus) were significantly higher than those in shrimp (P. vannamei and P. japonicus) and sea cucumber (A. japonicus) (p < 0.01). The bioaccumulation capacity of a class of statistically significant antibiotics in most samples was strongest during the youth stage and weakest during the adult stage. The antibiotics exhibited higher bioaccumulation capacity in lipid-rich tissues (fish liver and shrimp head) or respiratory organs (fish gill) than muscle. Our results also reveal significant metabolic transformation of enrofloxacin in fish. Different from previous studies, the logarithm bioaccumulation factor (log BAF) was positively correlated with log Dₗᵢₚw in low-biotransformation tissues (fish gill and muscle) rather than lipid-rich tissues (fish liver). Based on the calculated hazard quotients (HQ), doxycycline in fish muscle may pose a distinct risk to human health, which deserves special attention. Overall, these results provide insight into the bioaccumulation patterns of antibiotics during different growth stages and tissues of maricultured organisms.

Hg accumulation in marine organisms depends strongly on in situ water or sediment biogeochemistry and levels of Hg pollution. To predict the rates of Hg exposure in human communities, it is important to understand Hg assimilation and processing within commercially harvested marine fish, like the European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax. Previously, values of Δ¹⁹⁹Hg and δ²⁰²Hg in muscle tissue successfully discriminated between seven populations of European seabass. In the present study, a multi-tissue approach was developed to assess the underlying processes behind such discrimination.We determined total Hg content (THg), the proportion of monomethyl-Hg (%MeHg), and Hg isotopic composition (e.g. Δ¹⁹⁹Hg and δ²⁰²Hg) in seabass liver. We compared this to the previously published data on muscle tissue and local anthropogenic Hg inputs.The first important finding of this study showed an increase of both %MeHg and δ²⁰²Hg values in muscle compared to liver in all populations, suggesting the occurrence of internal MeHg demethylation in seabass. This is the first evidence of such a process occurring in this species. Values for mass-dependent (MDF, δ²⁰²Hg) and mass-independent (MIF, Δ¹⁹⁹Hg) isotopic fractionation in liver and muscle accorded with data observed in estuarine fish (MDF, 0–1‰ and MIF, 0–0.7‰). Black Sea seabass stood out from other regions, presenting higher MIF values (≈1.5‰) in muscle and very low MDF (≈-1‰) in liver. This second finding suggests that under low Hg bioaccumulation, Hg isotopic composition may allow the detection of a shift in the habitat use of juvenile fish, such as for first-year Black Sea seabass.Our study supports the multi-tissue approach as a valid tool for refining the analysis of Hg sourcing and metabolism in a marine fish. The study’s major outcome indicates that Hg levels of pollution and fish foraging location are the main factors influencing Hg species accumulation and isotopic fractionation in the organisms.

The importance of microplastic (MPs) contamination in marine environments is reflected by increasing number of studies in fish species. Some even dedicated to the toxicological effects from the ingestion. Microplastics (MPs) and their trace metal composition were examined in the muscle and intestine of five commercially important fish species (i.e., Sufflamen fraenatus, Heniochus acuminatus, Atropus atropos, Pseudotriacanthus and Leiognathus brevirostris) from Thoothukudi at the Gulf of Mannar coast in south India. The abundance and morphology of MPs (size, shape, and texture) in muscle and intestinal were investigated by micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (μ-FT-IR) and atomic force microscope (AFM). ICP-OES was used to investigate the adsorption/leaching of trace metals in microplastics in order to assess health risk for adults and children. Particles of 100–250 μm and white color dominated, and the mean abundances (items/100 g) of total MPs were more in Pseudotriacanthus (muscle: 51.2; intestine: 50.1) compared to Heniochus acuminatus (muscle: 9.6; intestine: 15), Leiognathus brevirostris (muscle: 12; intestine: 13.2) and Atropus atropus (muscle: 15.2; intestine: 44.1). Polyethylene (35.3%), polypropylene (27.2%), polyamide (nylon) (22.2%) and fiber (15.3%) represented the MPs present in muscles, and polyamide (nylon) (30.2%), polyethylene (28.1%), polypropylene (25.9%), and fiber (15.8%) composed the intestine MPs. We estimated possible consumption of 121–456 items of MPs/week by adults and about 19–68 items of MPs/week by children by considering the sizes of safe meals. Zn, Cu, Mn and Cr in these fish species reflected influence of the sewage waste. However, the non-carcinogenic risk evaluated through EDI, THQ, HI, and CR did not suggest any immediate health problem for the consumers.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in fishes from the NW Atlantic Ocean pose concern due to the importance of this region to U.S. fisheries harvest. In this study, total Hg (THg) concentrations and nitrogen stable isotope (δ¹⁵N) values were quantified in muscle tissues sampled from Golden (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) and Blueline (Caulolatilus microps) Tilefish collected during a fishery-independent survey conducted in the NW Atlantic to compare bioaccumulation patterns between these species. Total Hg concentrations averaged (±SD) 0.4 ± 0.4 μg/g dry weight (d.w.) for L. chamaeleonticeps and 1.1 ± 0.7 μg/g d.w. for C. microps with <2% of all sampled fish, those >70 cm fork length, exceeding the most restrictive USEPA regulatory guidelines for human consumption (THg > 0.46 μg/g w.w.), when converted to wet weight concentrations. The THg concentrations reported here for individuals from the NW Atlantic stock are comparable to those reported for similarly sized individuals collected from the SW Atlantic stock but notably lower than those reported for Gulf of Mexico L. chamaeleonticeps, indicating different Hg exposure and assimilation kinetics for fish from the NW Atlantic, and highlights the broad geographic variability of Hg bioaccumulation among Tilefish stocks. Caulolatilus microps had higher δ¹⁵N values relative to L. chamaeleonticeps and a pattern of decreasing THg concentrations was also present from south to north across the study range. It is concluded that this trophic difference and spatial pattern in Tilefish THg concentrations emphasizes the habitat and resource partitioning mechanisms described for these sympatric species that permits their coexistence in the continental shelf environment. Importantly, regional variability in THg concentrations accentuate the possible roles of fine-scale biotic and abiotic processes that can act to regulate Hg bioaccumulation among individuals and species.
