peer reviewed | The impact of climate change on water resource availability and soil quality is more and more emphasized under the Mediterranean basin, mostly characterized by drought and extreme weather conditions. The present study aims to investigate how electromagnetic induction technique and soil mapping combined with crop yield data can be used to optimize phosphorus (P) use efficiency by chickpea crop under drip fertigation system. The study was carried out on a 2.5-ha agricultural plot and the agronomic experiments in two growing cycles of chickpea crop. Soil spatial variability was first assessed by the measurement of soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) using the CMD Mini-Explorer sensor, and then, soil physicochemical properties were evaluated based on an oriented soil sampling scheme to explore other soil spatial variabilities influencing chickpea yield and quality. Data from the first agronomic experiment were used in geostatistical, multiple linear regression (MLR), and fuzzy c-means unsupervised classification algorithms to properly identify P drip fertigation management zones (MZs). Results from the Person's correlation analysis revealed that chickpea grain yield was more influenced by soil ECa (r = - 0.56), pH (r = - 0.84), ECe (r = - 0.6), P content (r = 0.72), and calcium (Ca) content (r = - 0.83). The proposed MLR-based model to predict chickpea grain yield showed good performances with a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 0.11% and a coefficient of determination (R2) equal to 0.69. The identified MZs were verified by the one-way variance analysis for the studied soil and plant attributes, revealing that the first MZ1 presents a high grain yield, high soil P content, and low ECa. The low fertility MZ2 located in the south part of the studied site presented a low chickpea grain yield due to the low P content and the high ECa. Moreover, the application of P-variable rate fertigation regimes in the second field experiment significantly improved P use efficiency, chickpea grain yield, seed quality, and farmer income by 18%, 12%, 9%, and 136 $/ha, respectively, as compared to the conventional drip fertigation practices. The approach proposed in this study can greatly contribute to optimizing agro-input use efficiency under drip fertigation system, thereby improving farmers' incomes, preserving the ecosystem, and ensuring sustainable cropping systems in the Mediterranean climate.

It is still a great challenge to address nutrient pollution issues caused by various point sources and non-point sources on the watershed scale. Source contribution analysis based on watershed modeling can help watershed managers identify major pollution sources, propose effective management plans and make smart decisions. This study demonstrated a technical procedure for addressing watershed-scale water pollution problems in an agriculture-dominated watershed, using the Dengsha River Watershed (DRW) in Dalian, China as an example. The SWAT model was improved by considering the constraints of soil nutrient concentration, i.e., nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), when modeling the nutrient uptake by a typical crop, corn. Then the modified SWAT model was used to quantify the contributions of all known pollution sources to the N and P pollution in the DRW. The results showed that crop production and trans-administrative wastewater discharge were the two dominant sources of nutrient pollution. This study further examined the responses of nutrient loss and crop yield to different fertilizer application schemes. The results showed that N fertilizer was the limiting factor for crop yield and that excessive levels of P were stored in the agricultural soils of the DRW. An N fertilizer application rate of approximately 40% of the current rate was suggested to balance water quality and environmental protection with crop production. The long-term impact of legacy P was investigated with a 100-year future simulation that showed the crop growth could maintain for 12 years even after P fertilization ceased. Our study highlights the need to consider source attribution, fertilizer application and legacy P impacts in agriculture-dominated watersheds. The analysis framework used in this study can provide a scientifically sound procedure for formulating adaptive and sustainable nutrient management strategies in other study areas.

Insight in the phosphorus (P) flows and P balances in the food chain is largely unknown at county scale in China, being the most appropriate spatial unit for nutrient management advice. Here, we examined changes in P flows in the food chain in a typical agricultural county (Quzhou) during 1980–2017, using substance flow analyses. Our results show that external P inputs to the county by feed import and fertilizer were 7 times greater in 2017 than in 1980, resulting in a 7-fold increase in P losses to the environment in the last 3 decades, with the biggest source being animal production. Phosphorus use efficiency decreased from 51% to 30% in crop production (PUEc) and from 32% to 11% in the whole food chain (PUEf), but increased from 4% to 7% in animal production (PUEa). A strong reduction in P inputs and thus increase in PUE can be achieved by balanced P fertilization, which is appropriate for Quzhou considering a current average adequate soil P status. Fertilizer P use can be reduced from 7276 tons yr⁻¹ to 1765 tons yr⁻¹ to equal P removal by crops. This change would increase P use efficiency for crops from 30% to 86% but it has a negligible effect on P losses to landfills and water bodies. Increasing the recycling of manure P from the current 43%–95% would reduce fertilizer P use by 17% and reduce P losses by 47%. A combination of reduced fertilizer P use and increased recycling of manure P would save fertilizer P by 93%, reduce P accumulation by 100% and P loss by 49%. The results indicate that increasing manure-recycling and decreasing fertilizer-application are key to achieving sustainable P use in the food chain, which can be achieved through coupling crop-livestock systems and crop-based nutrient management.

Sedum alfredii is a Cd/Zn hyperaccumulator native to China, which was collected from a mined area where Mn content in soil was extremely high, together with Zn and Cd content. We investigated the tolerance and accumulation ability of Mn and its possible association with Cd hyperaccumulation in this plant species by using MP-AES, SR-μ-XRF, and RT-PCR. The results showed that the hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) S. alfredii exhibited high tolerance to Mn and accumulating around 10,000 and 12,000 mg kg⁻¹ Mn in roots and shoots, respectively, without exhibiting toxicity under 5000 mg kg⁻¹ Mn treatment for 4 weeks. Exposure to Cd significantly reduced plant uptake of Mn. In contrast, exogenous Mn application significantly improved root uptake and root-to-shoot translocation of Cd, resulting in the increased Cd accumulation in the shoots of HE S. alfredii. SR-μ-XRF analysis demonstrated that high Mn (20 μM) exposure resulted in higher intensities of Cd localized in both stem vascular bundles and cortex, as well as leaf mesophyll cells, than in those treated with low Mn levels (0.2 μM or 2.0 μM). RT-PCR analysis of several genes possibly involved in Mn/Cd transportation showed that expression of SaNramp3 in roots was significantly reduced under high Mn exposure. These results suggested a significant interaction between Cd and Mn in the HE S. alfredii plants, possibly through their competition for transporters and theoretically provided a strategy to improve the efficiency of Cd extraction from polluted soils by this plant species, after using appropriate nutrient management of Mn.

Dredging is frequently used in the river mouths of eutrophic lakes to reduce internal phosphorus (P) loading from the sediment. However, the accumulation of P-adsorbed suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the inflowing rivers negatively affects the post-dredging sediment-water interface and ultimately increases internal P loading. Here, a 360-d experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of riverine SPM on the efficacy of dredging in reducing internal P loading. SPM was added to dredged and undredged sediments collected from the confluence area of Lake Chaohu. Several parameters related to internal P loading, including oxygen profile, soluble reactive P, and ferrous iron across the sediment-water interface, organic matter, alkaline phosphatase activity, and P fractions, were measured throughout the experimental period. The results showed that the P content (especially mobile P) in the sediment increased to the pre-dredging level with the accumulation of SPM in the dredged sediment. In addition, the P flux across the sediment-water interface increased with the accumulation of SPM. Several characteristics of SPM, including high organic matter content, mobile P, high activity of alkaline phosphatase, and high biological activity, were considered correlated with the post-dredging increase in internal P loading. Overall, this study showed that the heavily contaminated riverine SPM regulates the long-term efficacy of dredging as a nutrient management option in the confluence area. Management is needed to avoid or reduce this phenomenon during dredging projects of this nature.

Eutrophication of coastal and nearshore receiving environments downstream of intensive agricultural production areas is a global issue. The Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan (2017–2022) sets ambitious targets for reducing pollutant loads entering the Great Barrier Reef from contributing agricultural catchments. At a regional scale, the Wet Tropics end-of-catchment target load reduction for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) is 60% from the 2012–2013 anthropogenic load level. However, not even with the combined efforts of the Reef Regulations (December 2019) mandate and adoption of best practice nutrient management on farm, is it likely that these DIN targets will be reached. Thus, there is a need for innovative and cost-effective approaches to deliver further water quality improvement. Transitioning low-lying, marginal sugarcane land to alternative land uses that require lower or no nitrogen inputs, but still provide farmers with income streams, is a potentially attractive solution. In this study, a multi-criteria analysis was conducted to identify sites suitable for such alternative land uses. The cost-effectiveness of DIN reductions from these land use changes were calculated, accounting for reductions in annuity gross margins and land conversion cost. In certain locations (where conversion costs are low and DIN reductions are high) treatment wetlands and no-input cattle grazing offer cost-effective DIN reduction in the range of 20–26$/kg DIN. This compares favourably with existing agricultural extension-based approaches (c. $50/kg DIN reduction). Ecosystem service wetlands (i.e., wetland restoration for fish production) – again when appropriately situated – offer the prospect of even more cost-effective performance (11–14 $/kg DIN reduction). These results, in conjunction with best management practices, support the premise that alternative land uses are cost-effective options for improving water quality in certain areas of low-lying, low productivity sugarcane land. On-going investments by government in addition to private market funding mechanisms could be appropriate for supporting such land use transitions. These approaches need to be tested and refined via targeted pilot projects, as part of a whole-of-landscape approach to achieve broader reef water quality targets.

Nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) in juvenile winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, were used to examine changes in nitrogen inputs to several Rhode Island, USA estuarine systems. Fish were collected over two three-year periods with a ten-year interval between sampling periods (2002–2004 and 2012–2014). During that interval numerous changes to nutrient management practices were initiated in the watersheds of these estuarine systems including the upgrade of several major wastewater treatment facilities that discharge to Narragansett Bay, which significantly reduced nitrogen inputs. Following these reductions, the δ15N values of flounder in several of the systems decreased as expected; however, isotope ratios in fish from upper Narragansett Bay significantly increased. We believe that low δ15N values measured in 2002–2004 were related to concentration-dependent fractionation at this location. Increased δ15N values measured between 2012 and 2014 may indicate reduced fractionation or that changes in wastewater treatment processes altered the nitrogen isotopic ratios of the effluents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Stormwater runoff of nutrients from developed landscapes is recognized as a major threat to water quality degradation through cultural eutrophication, which can lead to ecosystem imbalances and harmful algal growth. This review summarizes the current state-of-knowledge on the occurrence, sources, and transport processes of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in urban stormwater runoff and describes strategies for nutrient management of urban stormwater runoff. Future research needs identified from this review are provided as well. RECENT FINDINGS: Stormwater runoff of nutrients from urban environments to fresh water is controlled by multiple factors, including type of inputs, land use, development patterns, and management strategies. Recent research on stormwater management strategies has focused on internal nutrient cycling processes, such as microbial transformations of N in conventional wet ponds or bioretention cells, leading to a better understanding of the mechanisms that control the efficacy of stormwater management practices. Mitigating nutrient exports from urban environments will require controlling both quantities and sources of nutrient inputs into water systems, as well as new mechanistic understanding of the biogeochemical processes controlling nutrient treatment in stormwater ponds and low impact design (LID) structures. We need more research on source tracking of P from stormwater runoff as information is still relatively scarce. There is also a need to obtain better understanding of the dynamic interactions among multiple factors (e.g., sources, land use, characteristic of catchment and climate, management strategies) that control fate and transport of nutrients in urban stormwater runoff.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for plant cultivation, where the demand for agricultural products as food and feed are the main drivers of aggravated agricultural production systems. Maize is one of the main feedstocks for animal feed production in Thailand. Therefore, this study investigated P flows, using the conservation of mass-balanced concept to identify the major P flows in maize cultivation during rainy and dry seasons based on a survey of 131 plantation land plots. The result indicated that total amount of P input to maize fields during upland rainy and lowland dry season cultivation was determined as 27.76 and 34.96 kg P/ha, respectively, approximately 97% of which was in chemical fertilizers. P output in grain products accounted for 31.7 and 37.3% of the total P input or 32.9 and 38.0% of the applied fertilizer during maize cultivation in rainy and dry seasons, respectively. Agricultural soils were the main stock of P in maize cultivation systems. From the amount of applied P in rainy and dry seasons of maize cultivation, 43.9 and 41.3% remained in the soil, respectively, whereas 6.0 and 4.5% of those input during rainy and dry season were lost through runoff to the hydrosphere, respectively. This result indicated that seasonal and geographical factors may affect P flow pattern in maize cultivation. This revealed that P accumulation in soils and P loss occurring in rainy season were greater than those of dry season. Therefore, optimizing P flows through improved nutrient management should carefully consider helping reduce P loss during maize cultivation in Thailand.

While intensive peach production has expanded rapidly in recent years, few studies have explored the environmental impacts associated with specific regional systems or the optimal management strategies to minimize associated environmental risks. Here, data from a survey of 290 native farmers were used to conduct a life cycle assessment to quantify the acidification potential (AP), global warming potential (GWP), eutrophication potential (EP), and reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses in peach production in Pinggu District, Beijing. Total annual Nr losses, and GWP, AP, and EP values for peach production in Pinggu District were respectively 10.7 kg N t⁻¹, 857 kg CO₂-eq t⁻¹, 12.9 kg SO₂-eq t⁻¹, and 4.1 kg PO₄-eq t⁻¹. The principal driving factors were fertilizer production, transportation, and application, which together accounted for 94%, 67%, 75%, and 94% of Nr losses, GWP, AP, and EP, respectively. In the high yield, high nitrogen-use efficiency (HH) group, relative values of Nr losses, GWP, AP, and EP were respectively 33%, 25%, 39%, and 32% lower than the overall averages for 290 orchards. Further analyses indicate that improved farming practices such as decreasing application rates of fertilizers, increasing proportion of base fertilization rate, and proper fertilization frequency in the HH group were the main reasons for these orchards’ better performance in peach yields and partial factor productivity of nitrogen fertilizer, and their reduced environmental impacts. These results highlight the need to optimize nutrient management in peach production in order simultaneously to realize both environmental sustainability and high productivity in the peach production system.
