Microplastics (<5 mm) are ubiquitous in the global environment and are increasingly recognized as a biological hazard, particularly in the oceans. Zooplankton, at the base of the marine food web, have been known to consume microplastics. However, we know little about the impacts of microplastics across life history stages and on carbon settling. Here, we investigated the effects of ingestion of neutrally buoyant polystyrene beads (6.68 μm) by the copepod Acartia tonsa on (1) growth and survival across life history stages, (2) fecundity and egg quality, (3) and fecal characteristics. We found that microplastic exposure reduced body length and survival for nauplii and resulted in smaller eggs when copepods were exposed during oogenesis. Combining these life history impacts, our models estimate a 15% decrease in population growth leading to a projected 30-fold decrease in abundance over 1 year or 20 generations with microplastic exposure. In addition, microplastic-contaminated fecal pellets were 2.29-fold smaller and sinking rates were calculated to be 1.76-fold slower, resulting in an estimated 4.03-fold reduction in fecal volume settling to the benthos per day. Taken together, declines in population sizes and fecal sinking rates suggest that microplastic consumption by zooplankton could have cascading ecosystem impacts via reduced trophic energy transfer and slower carbon settling.

Trophic magnification factor (TMF) of persistent toxic substances (PTSs: Hg, PCBs, PAHs, and styrene oligomers (SOs)) in a coastal food web (12 fish and four invertebrates) was determined in Ulsan Bay, South Korea. The nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N) of amino acids [δ¹⁵NGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ based on glutamic acid (δ¹⁵NGₗᵤ) and phenylalanine (δ¹⁵NPₕₑ)] were used to estimate the trophic position (TPGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ) of organisms. The TPGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ of organisms ranged from 1.64 to 3.69, which was lower than TP estimated by δ¹⁵N of bulk particulate organic matter (TPBᵤₗₖ: 2.46–4.21). Mercury and CB 138, 153, 187, and 180 were biomagnified through the whole food web (TMF > 1), while other PTSs, such as PAHs and SOs were not (biodilution of SOs firstly reported). In particular, the trophic transfer of PTSs was pronounced in the resident fish (e.g., rock bream, sea perch, Korean rockfish). Of note, CB 99, 101, 118, and 183 were additionally found to be biomagnifying PTSs in these species. Thus, fish residency appears to represent an important factor in determining the TMF of PTSs in the coastal environment. Overall, δ¹⁵NGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ provided accurate TPs of organisms and could be applied to determine the trophic transfer of PTSs in coastal food webs.

Particulate organic matter (POM) acts as a metals sink in soil, but only a few studies focused on the interaction of POM and heavy metals in paddy soil. The aim of this study is to investigate the interaction between POM and Copper (Cu)/Zinc (Zn). Two levels of Cu (100, 400 mg kg⁻¹) and Zn (250, 500 mg kg⁻¹) were used in a soil culture experiment. Our results showed that POM was porous structure and varied in size. Hydroxyl and carboxyl involved in POM adsorption of Cu and Zn. Rhizosphere effects roughen the surface of POM and enhanced the capacity of POM on heavy metals absorption. Cu-humic (26.2–33.9%) and Cu-citrate (38.5–42.4%) were dominated in POM, and Cu-goethite (41.7–57.7%), Cu-sulphide (6.6–27.6%) was dominated in soil. Rhizosphere effects decreased the proportion of organic-bond Cu along with the increasing the proportion of Cu-sulphide in POM. Addition of Cu and Zn inhibited the degradation of POM but rhizosphere effects promoted. Carbon content was increased in POM by heavy metal and rhizosphere effects. Our findings indicated that POM tended to retain the heavy metals in soil and heavy metals inhibited the degradation of POM, however, rhizosphere effects decreased the stability of POM-metals interactions.

Widely used titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are likely to accumulate ultimately in sediments and potentially pose a risk to water ecosystems. This study evaluated the effect of TiO2 nanoparticles on the photodissolution of particulate organic matter (POM) through fluorescence spectroscopy. Excitation-emission matrices and parallel factor analyses revealed that the fluorescent characteristics of produced dissolved organic matter (DOM) during photodissolution of suspended sediment and synthetic particulate organic matter (SPOM) were primarily humic-like. SPOM particles appeared to simulate well the photodissolution of suspended sediment. Quasi-complete increases in fluorescence intensity and chromophoric DOM (CDOM) abundance were reached after 90, 60, and 50 min irradiation for TiO2 concentrations of 0, 2, and 5 mg L−1, respectively. The faster increment of fluorescence intensity and CDOM abundance indicated the photocatalytic dissolution of SPOM, as opposite charges between TiO2 and SPOM at pH = 4 favored the adsorption of TiO2 onto SPOM. For sediments, the CDOM abundance and fluorescence intensity decreased with increasing TiO2 concentration, resulting from the photocatalytic degradation of photoproduced DOM from sediments. These results demonstrated that pH plays an important role in the photocatalytic dissolution of POM by TiO2. Therefore, appropriate pH controls should be implemented when TiO2 are used to treat sediments contaminated with organic pollutants. Finally, with increasing use of TiO2, its accumulation in sediments may affect the fate of carbon, nutrients, and heavy metals in shallow-water ecosystems.

Biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in the Scotia Sea food web of the Southern Ocean was examined using the stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) and carbon (δ¹³C) as proxies for trophic level and feeding habitat, respectively. Total Hg and stable isotopes were measured in samples of particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, squid, myctophid fish, notothenioid fish and seabird tissues collected in two years (austral summers 2007/08 and 2016/17). Overall, there was extensive overlap in δ¹³C values across taxonomic groups suggesting similarities in habitats, with the exception of the seabirds, which showed some differences, possibly due to the type of tissue analysed (feathers instead of muscle). δ¹⁵N showed increasing enrichment across groups in the order POM to zooplankton to squid to myctophid fish to notothenioid fish to seabirds. There were significant differences in δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C values among species within taxonomic groups, reflecting inter-specific variation in diet. Hg concentrations increased with trophic level, with the lowest values in POM (0.0005 ± 0.0002 μg g⁻¹ dw) and highest values in seabirds (3.88 ± 2.41 μg g⁻¹ in chicks of brown skuas Stercorarius antarcticus). Hg concentrations tended to be lower in 2016/17 than in 2007/08 for mid-trophic level species (squid and fish), but the opposite was found for top predators (i.e. seabirds), which had higher levels in the 2016/17 samples. This may reflect an interannual shift in the Scotia Sea marine food web, caused by the reduced availability of a key prey species, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba. In 2016/17, seabirds would have been forced to feed on higher trophic-level prey, such as myctophids, that have higher Hg burdens. These results suggest that changes in the food web are likely to affect the pathway of mercury to Southern Ocean top predators.

Microplastic pollution of intertidal mangrove ecosystems is receiving growing attention, and scientists suspect that the microplastic pollution of semi-enclosed seas is significantly different from that of other coastal types because of their unique geographical features. However, data on the distributions and characteristics of microplastics in the mangrove sediment of semi-enclosed seas are very limited. This study selected the Maowei Sea, a typical semi-enclosed sea, as its representative study site. The analysis revealed that the microplastic abundances in the river estuaries were much lower than those at the oceanic entrance zones, with values ranging from 520 ± 8 to 940 ± 17 items/kg. Polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP)/polystyrene (PS), white/transparent, and <1 mm were the dominant type, colour, and size of the microplastics, respectively, in the observed mangrove sediments. Moreover, some other factors, including the rhizosphere/non-rhizosphere and the proportion of organic matter, codetermined the distribution and characteristics of microplastics. Specifically: (1) the percentage of colorful microplastics were higher in the rhizosphere due to the microbial activities and (2) positive linear relationships were found between the pore volume (PV) values of the free particulate organic matter (FPOM), occluded particulate organic matter (OPOM) (1.6–2.0 g/cm³ and >2.0 g/cm³), and the abundance of very small microplastics (<1 mm).

Soil particulate organic matter (POM) has rapid turnover and metal enrichment, but the interactions between organic matter (OM) and metals have not been well studied. The present study aimed to investigate changes in the OM concentration and composition of the POM fraction and their corresponding effects on metal distribution and extractability in long-term polluted paddy soils. Soil 2000–53 μm POM size fractions had higher contents of C–H and C=O bonds, C–H/C=O ratios and concentrations of fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) than the bulk soils. Cadmium and Zn stocks in soil POM fractions were 24.5–27.9% and 7.12–16.7%, respectively, and were more readily EDTA-extractable. Compared with the control soil, the 2000–250 μm POM size fractions had higher organic carbon concentrations and C/N ratios in the polluted soils. However, there were no significant differences in the contents in C–H and C=O bonds or C–H/C=O ratios of POM fractions among the control, slightly and highly polluted soils. In accordance with the lower contents of C=O bonds and FA and HA concentrations, the Cd and Zn concentrations in 250–53 μm POM size fractions were lower than those in 2000–250 μm POM size fractions. Enrichment of Cd in POM fractions increased with increasing soil pollution level. These results support the view that changes in the OM concentration and the size and composition of POM fractions play a key role in determining the distribution of Cd and Zn in paddy soils.

Although organic compounds in marine atmospheric aerosols have significant effects on climate and marine ecosystems, they have rarely been studied, especially in the coastal regions of East China. To assess the origins of the organic aerosols in the East China coastal atmosphere, PM2.5 samples were collected from the atmospheres of the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and Changdao Island during the CAPTAIN (Campaign of Air PolluTion At INshore Areas of Eastern China) field campaign in the spring of 2011. The marine atmospheric aerosol samples that were collected were grouped based on the backward trajectories of their air masses. The organic carbon concentrations in the PM2.5 samples from the marine and Changdao Island atmospheres were 5.5 ± 3.1 μgC/m3 and 6.9 ± 2.4 μgC/m3, respectively, which is higher than in other coastal water atmospheres. The concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the marine atmospheric PM2.5 samples was 17.0 ± 20.2 ng/m3, indicating significant continental anthropogenic influences. The influences of fossil fuels and biomass burning on the composition of organic aerosols in the coastal atmosphere of East China were found to be highly dependent on the origins of the air masses. Diesel combustion had a strong impact on air masses from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and gasoline emissions had a more significant impact on the “North China” marine atmospheric samples. The “Northeast China” marine atmospheric samples were most impacted by biomass burning. Coal combustion contributed significantly to the compositions of all of the atmospheric samples. The proportions of secondary compounds increased as samples aged in the marine atmosphere indicating that photochemical oxidation occured during transport. Our results quantified ecosystem effects on marine atmospheric aerosols and highlighted the uncertainties that arise when modeling marine atmospheric PM2.5 without considering high spatial resolution source data and meteorological parameters.
