The need to assess the role of terrestrial ecosystems in the global C cycle and the potential change of this role as the atmospheric concentration of CO2 increases attracted considerable scientific attention over the recent decade. In order to assess ecosystem responses as a whole and to evaluate the potential role of forests and tree communities as a carbon sinks, the below-ground response to increasing levels of CO2 must be addressed

Atmospheric warming and increasing tropospheric ozone (O₃) concentrations often co-occur in many cities of the world including China, adversely affecting the health status of urban trees. However, little information is known about the combined and interactive effects from increased air temperature (IT) and elevated O₃ (EO) exposures on urban tree species. Here, Ginkgo biloba and Populus alba ‘Berolinensis’ seedlings were subjected to IT (+2 °C of ambient air temperature) and/or EO (+2-fold ambient air O₃ concentrations) for one growing season by using open-top chambers. IT alone had no significant effect on physiological metabolisms at the early growing stage, but significantly increased photosynthetic parameters, antioxidative enzyme activities (P < 0.05). EO alone decreased physiological parameters except for increased oxidative stress. Compared to EO exposure alone, plants grown under IT and EO combined showed higher antioxidative and photosynthetic activity. There was a significant interactive effect between IT and EO on net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry, the actual quantum efficiency of PSII, enzyme activities, aboveground biomass and root/shoot ratio (P < 0.05), respectively. These results suggested that during one growing season, IT mitigated the adverse effect of EO on the tested plants. In addition, we found that G. biloba was more sensitive than P. alba ‘Berolinensis’ to both IT and EO, suggesting that G. biloba may be a good indicator species for climate warming and air pollution, particularly under environmental conditions as they co-occur in urban areas.

The occurrence of legacy and novel per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in multiple matrices from a farmland environment was investigated in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei core area of northern China. PFASs were ubiquitously detected in farmland soils, and the detection frequency of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA) was higher than that of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (98% vs. 83%). Long-chain PFASs, including 6:2 Cl-PFESA, showed a centered distribution pattern around the metropolis of Tianjin, probably due to the local intensive industrial activity, while trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) showed a decreasing trend from the coast to the inland area. Other than soil, TFA was also found at higher levels than other longer-chain PFASs in dust, maize (Zea mays), poplar (Populus alba) leaf and locust (Locusta migratoria manilens) samples. Both poplar leaves and locusts can be used as promising biomonitoring targets for PFASs in farmland environments, and their accumulation potential corresponds with protein and lipid contents. Apart from being exposed to PFASs via food intake, locusts were likely exposed via uptake from soil and precipitated dust in farmland environments. The biomonitoring of locusts may be more relevant to insectivores, which is important to conducting a comprehensive ecological risk assessment of farmland environments.

Three ex situ collections of poplar clones from natural populations of Populus alba and P. nigra growing in northern Italy were assessed for their genetic dissimilarity (GD) by means of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). The high GD evidenced within populations was exploited for screening 168 clones in a field trial on heavy metal-polluted soil. After one growth season, clonal differences in plant survival and growth were observed. On the basis of performance, six clones were singled out, and used to evaluate copper and zinc accumulation in different organs. Clonal differences in metal concentrations were most evident for leaves and stems; one clone of P. alba (AL35) had a distinctly higher concentration of both metals in the roots. Leaf polyamine (putrescine, spermidine, spermine) profiles correlated with tissue metal concentrations, depending on the clone, plant organ and metal. In particular, the high metal-accumulating clone AL35 exhibited a dramatically higher concentration of free and conjugated putrescine. Overall, the results indicate that, given the high GD of Populus even within populations, it is possible to identify genotypes best suited for soil clean-up, and useful also for investigating physiological markers associated with high metal accumulation/tolerance High survival rate and heavy metal accumulation are associated with high polyamine concentration in an elite poplar clone.

The experiment was carried out on a short rotation coppice culture of poplars (POP-EUROFACE, Central Italy), growing in a free air carbon dioxide enriched atmosphere (FACE). The specific objective of this work was to study whether elevated CO2 and fertilization (two CO2 treatments, elevated CO2 and control, two N fertilization treatments, fertilized and unfertilized), as well as the interaction between treatments caused an unbalanced nutritional status of leaves in three poplar species (P. x euramericana, P. nigra and P. alba). Finally, we discuss the ecological implications of a possible change in foliar nutrients concentration. CO2 enrichment reduced foliar nitrogen and increased the concentration of magnesium; whereas nitrogen fertilization had opposite effects on leaf nitrogen and magnesium concentrations. Moreover, the interaction between elevated CO2 and N fertilization amplified some element unbalances such as the K/N-ratio. CO2 enrichment reduced foliar nitrogen and increased the magnesium concentration in poplar.

The plant association of Populus alba L. ‘Villafranca’, Brassica oleracea var. acephala sebellica (kale), and B. oleracea var. capitata ‘sonsma’ (cabbage) was exposed to Zn, Cd, and exogenous caffeine (¹³CFN)-contaminated water under growth chamber conditions. In the short term of treatment (15 days), poplar increased the root dry biomass (+ 25%) and decreased the chlorophyll content in new leaves (− 32%), compared to control. On the contrary, cabbage decreased the root dry biomass, enhancing the shoot dry biomass (+ 50%). Heavy metals were mainly concentrated in plant roots and in poplar reached the highest concentrations of 705 ± 232.6 and 338 ± 85.5 μg g⁻¹ DW for Zn and Cd, respectively. The ability of poplar to accumulate more Zn and Cd than kale and cabbage in plant biomass was confirmed by heavy metal contents, following the order: poplar > kale = cabbage. However, poplar and Brassica sp. association was very useful for Zn and Cd decontaminations as reported by the bioconcentration factors (> 1). The concentration of ¹³CFN was below 2.4 ng g⁻¹ FW in poplar and 7.4 ng g⁻¹ FW in Brassica species, suggesting the caffeine uptake and degradation by plant association. Under our experimental conditions, the removal efficiency of the system was upper to 79%, indicating the capability of Populus-Brassica association to efficiently remove Zn, Cd, and ¹³CFN from mixed inorganic-organic–contaminated water in short term.

To evaluate cadmium (Cd) remediation capacity of gray poplar (Populus × canescens Sm. referred to the hybrid of Populus tremula L. × Populus alba L.), the glasshouse experiment was conducted in hydroponics, and the effects of Cd (0, 10, 30, 50, and 70 μM) on plant growth as well as Cd uptake and translocation were investigated. The growth rate of all tissues in P. × canescens decreased slowly with an increase in Cd concentrations. Among different tissues, the root exhibited the highest level of bio-concentration factor (BCF), followed by leaves, bark, and wood. BCFs in bark and wood significantly decreased with an increase in Cd concentrations. The translocation factor in different tissues firstly increased and then declined with an increase in Cd concentrations, respectively. The translocation factor in different tissues decreased slowly with an increase in Cd concentrations. Cd accumulation rates significantly increased and reached about sevenfold the level after 70 μM than that observed after 0 μM (control) for 28 days. These results indicated that P. × canescens have good tolerance against Cd stress, varying in Cd accumulation and translocation. These properties need to be taken into account in selecting species for the phytoremediation of orefield.

This study aimed at determining the cadmium phytoextraction potential of three Populus alba L. clones cultivated in the presence of increasing sodium chloride concentrations. Plantlets of a commercial and two autochthonous poplar clones were grown in perlite with nutrient solution enriched in CdSO₄ (50 and 100 μM) and NaCl (25 and 50 mM), administered either alone or in combination. The three clones showed significant variation not only in cadmium and salt tolerance, accumulation and content, but also in the effect of the interaction between the two elements on these parameters. The toxic effect of Cd and salt excess on plants was mutually exacerbated by the presence of both. Even though the outcome of the joint treatment was always a decrease in shoot Cd or Na accumulation, the three clones showed variation in the extent of such reduction. Evaluating the total element content per plant shoot, the fast-growing commercial clone displayed the highest phytoextraction potential for Cd and Na, either alone or in mixture. Our results demonstrated for the first time that the Cd response in presence of salt can vary in the different clones.

A dose–response study was performed in four commercial clones, Baldo (Populus deltoides), Jean Pourtet (Populus nigra), I-214 (Populus x euramericana) and Villafranca (Populus alba), to investigate the best performing species in terms of metal content and high metal resistance (absence of symptoms) useful in biomass production on contaminated water/land by zinc. Zinc (1 μM as control and 1 mM) was applied for 4 weeks in a hydroponic system. Clone Villafranca was the least damaged, while the most sensitive was clone I-214. The highest zinc concentration in all different parts of plants analysed was recorded in Villafranca > I-214 > Baldo > Jean Pourtet. The higher translocation factor was seen in Baldo, the lowest in Villafranca. Analyses of leaf damage showed a reduction on Chl a in young leaves (96 %) in I-214 stressed plants, whereas in Villafranca, Chl a was about double compared to the control. Regarding other photosynthetic pigments, violaxanthin was significantly correlated to zinc concentration in old leaves. The responses of clones to zinc (Zn) stress were specific: Villafranca was the most resistant, while I-214 showed the highest biomass production under Zn excess. Since these two clones have useful and complementary traits for uptake and detoxification while maintaining high biomass production under Zn excess, they are interesting candidates for understanding the key resistance mechanisms.

Plants provide many ecosystem services in urban environments, including improving ambient air quality. Leaves of plants permit the deposition of particulate matter (PM) and, depending on their leaf traits, PM may be immobilized within the epicuticular wax (EW) layer, on trichomes, on hyphae of fungi, or inside stomatal cavities. In this study, leaves of 96 perennial urban plant species consisting of 45 deciduous broadleaf/needle-like trees, 32 deciduous broadleaf shrubs, 12 evergreen needle/scale-like trees, 5 evergreen broadleaf trees, and 2 climber species were investigated in June and September 2016 to determine the effectiveness of distinct leaf surfaces in PM immobilization after leaf washing treatment. The leaf surfaces were washed vigorously using a vortex shaker. The magnetizable component of accumulated and immobilized PM on the leaf surfaces was estimated using saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) of the unwashed and washed leaves, respectively. In June, the washed leaf SIRM of deciduous (broadleaf/needle-like) tree and shrub species (n = 77) ranged between 0.1 and 13.9 μA. In September, the washed leaf SIRM of all investigated plant species (n = 96) ranged between 1.2 and 35.0 μA. Outcomes of this study indicate that leaves of Buddleja davidii, Viburnum lantana, and Sorbus intermedia showed the highest washed leaf SIRM and thus were the most effective in immobilizing PM on their leaf surfaces while leaves of Populus alba, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Abies fraseri with lowest washed leaf SIRM were the least effective. On average, more than half (i.e., 60%) of the magnetic signal still remained after vigorous washing but a large variation exists between species (9–96%). The leaf SIRM of washed leaves of deciduous broadleaf tree and shrub species was significantly higher compared to leaves of evergreen needle/scale-like species. Evidently, the magnetic signal of unwashed leaves was higher than washed ones and higher in September than in June. Leaf traits significantly influenced the magnetic signal of both washed and unwashed leaves: leaves with a high trichome density or high leaf wettability showed a higher unwashed and washed leaf SIRM compared to leaves with no trichomes or low leaf wettability. The effect of epicuticular wax structure types on leaf SIRM was indicated to be only marginally significant. Moreover, also the immobilized fraction of PM was significantly affected by trichome density and leaf wettability, thus substantiating that plant species with high trichome density and/or leaf wettability not only accumulate more PM but are also less prone to PM re-suspension than other species. In general, the results also indicate that leaf SIRM of unwashed leaves can be a good indicator to determine the effectiveness of a plant species in PM immobilization. Plant species effective in immobilizing PM on their leaf surfaces may likely improve ambient air quality when planted in urban environments. However, it is vital that leaves of these plant species (i.e., with high PM immobilization abilities) are carefully recycled as they may be polluted.
