Spatial variation of the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was evaluated within an urban-industrial district where the main anthropogenic pressures are a 15 MW biomass power plant (BPP) and road traffic. The use of a high-density lichen transplant network and wind quantitative relationships made it possible to perform a hierarchical analysis of contamination. Combined uni-bi and multivariate statistical analyses of the resulting databases revealed a dual pattern. In its surroundings (local scale), the BPP affected the bioaccumulation of fluoranthene, pyrene and total PAHs, although a confounding effect of traffic (mostly petrol/gasoline engines) was evident. Spatial variation of the rate of diesel vehicles showed a significant association with that of acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene and naphthalene. The series of high-speed wind values suggests that wind promotes diffusion rather than dispersion of the monitored PAHs. At the whole study area scale, the BPP was a source of acenaphthylene and acenaphthene, while diesel vehicles were a source of acenaphthylene. PAHs contamination strongly promotes oxidative stress (a threefold increase vs pre-exposure levels) in lichen transplants, suggesting a marked polluting effect of anthropogenic sources especially at the expense of the mycobiont. The proposed monitoring approach could improve the apportionment of the different contributions of point and linear anthropogenic sources of PAHs, mitigating the reciprocal biases affecting their spatial patterns.

Owing to its physicochemical similarity to strontium (Sr), calcium (Ca) was tested as a key component of a soil washing solution for Sr-contaminated soil collected near a nuclear power plant. A four-factor, three-level Box–Behnken experimental design combined with response surface modeling was employed to determine the optimal Sr washing condition for Ca-based solution. The Ca concentration (0.1–1 M), liquid-to-soil ratio (5–20), washing time (0.5–2 h), and pH (2.0–7.0) were tested as the independent variables. From the Box–Behnken design, 27 sets of experimental conditions were selected, and a second-order polynomial regression equation was derived. The significance of the independent parameters and interactions was tested by analysis of variance. Ca concentration was found to be the most influential factor. To determine whether the four variables were independent, three-dimensional (3D) response surface plots were established. The optimal washing condition was determined to be as follows: 1 M Ca, L/S ratio of 20, 1 h washing, and pH = 2. Under this condition, the highest Sr removal efficiency (68.2%) was achieved on a soil contaminated with 90.1 mg/kg of Sr. Results from five-step sequential extraction before and after washing showed that 84.0% and 82.9% of exchangeable and carbonate-bound Sr were released, respectively. In addition, more tightly bound Sr, such as Fe/Mn oxides-bound and organic matter-bound Sr, were also removed (86.2% and 64.5% removal, respectively).

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic and persistent pollutant and has long-term impacts on ecological systems and human health. Coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) are the main source of anthropogenic Hg emission, and the emitted atmospheric Hg is deposited to the surrounding environments which causes soil pollution. To assess the effects of atmospheric Hg from CFPPs in China on the temperate steppe, Hg contents in the topsoil and subsoil were analyzed for samples collected from 80 sites in central Inner Mongolia during 2012–2015. The average content of Hg in topsoil and subsoil were 14.9 ± 10.4 μg kg⁻¹ and 8.9 ± 5.8 μg kg⁻¹, respectively. The principal components analysis (PCA) indicated that the soil organic matter content and atmospheric deposition were the main factors determining soil Hg content in Inner Mongolia. We used the power plant impact factor (PPIF) to evaluate the impacts of the surrounding CFPPs. The PPIF results showed the most positive correlation with Hg content in topsoil at more than 400 km distances, indicating that the contribution of the long-range transport of Hg emitted from CFPPs is regional in scale. Considering the potential of Hg accumulation in soil, long-term and regional measurements of soil Hg and stricter emission-limit standards for power plants should be implemented to control soil Hg pollution in China.

In February 2014, the coalmine adjacent to the Hazelwood Power Station in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria, Australia, caught fire, with residents from the nearby town of Morwell and the wider area exposed to smoke for six weeks. Although there was evidence linking the mine-fire event with psychological distress, no studies have evaluated the degree of distress in relation to the level of smoke exposure. We aimed to investigate the exposure-response relationship between particulate matter 2.5 μm or less in diameter (PM₂.₅) released during the Hazelwood mine fire event and long-term symptoms of posttraumatic distress in the affected community, including the consideration of other key factors. A total of 3096 Morwell residents, and 960 residents from the largely unexposed comparison community of Sale, were assessed for symptoms of posttraumatic distress 2.5 years after the Hazelwood incident using the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R). Individual-level PM₂.₅ exposure was estimated by mapping participants’ self-reported location data on modelled PM₂.₅ concentrations related to the mine fire. Multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate the exposure-response relationship. Both mean and peak exposure to mine fire-related PM₂.₅ were found to be associated with participant IES-R scores with an interaction effect between age and mean PM₂.₅ exposure also identified. Each 10 μg/m³ increase in mean PM₂.₅ exposure corresponded to a 0.98 increase in IES-R score (95% CI: 0.36 to 1.61), and each 100 μg/m³ increase in peak PM₂.₅ exposure corresponded to a 0.36 increase (95% CI: 0.06 to 0.67). An age-effect was observed, with the exposure-response association found to be stronger for younger adults. The results suggest that increased exposure to PM₂.₅ emissions from the Hazelwood mine fire event was associated with higher levels of psychological distress associated with the mine fire and the most pronounced effect was on younger adults living in the affected community.

Facing serious air pollution problems, the Chinese government has taken numerous measures to prevent and control air pollution. Understanding the sources of pollutants is crucial to the prevention of air pollution. Using numerical simulation method, this study analysed the contributions of the total local emissions and local emissions from different sectors (such as industrial, traffic, resident, agricultural, and power plant emissions) to PM₂.₅ concentration, backward trajectory, and potential source regions in Tangshan, a typical heavy industrial city in north China. The impact of multi-scale meteorological conditions on source apportionment was investigated. From October 2016 to March 2017, total local emissions accounted for 46.0% of the near-surface PM₂.₅ concentration. In terms of emissions from different sectors, local industrial emissions which accounted for 23.1% of the near-surface PM₂.₅ concentration in Tangshan, were the most important pollutant source. Agricultural emissions were the second most important source, accounting for 10.3% of the near-surface PM₂.₅ concentration. The contributions of emissions from power plants, traffic, residential sources were 2.0%, 3.0%, and 7.2%, respectively. The contributions of total local emissions and emissions from different sectors depended on multi-scale meteorological conditions, and static weather significantly enhanced the contribution of regional transport to the near-surface PM₂.₅ concentration. Eight cluster backward trajectories were identified for Tangshan. The PM₂.₅ concentration for the 8 cluster trajectories significantly differed. The near-surface PM₂.₅ in urban Tangshan (receptor point) was mainly from the local emissions, and another important potential source region was Tianjin. The results of the source apportionment suggested the importance of joint prevention and control of air pollution in some areas where cities or industrial regions are densely distributed.

This study presents the results of an integrated model developed to evaluate the environmental and health impacts of Electric Vehicle (EV) deployment in a large metropolitan area. The model combines a high-resolution chemical transport model with an emission inventory established with detailed transportation and power plant information, as well as a framework to characterize and monetize the health impacts. Our study is set in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) in Canada with bounding scenarios for 25% and 100% EV penetration rates. Our results indicate that even with the worst-case assumptions for EV electricity supply (100% natural gas), vehicle electrification can deliver substantial health benefits in the GTHA, equivalent to reductions of about 50 and 260 premature deaths per year for 25% and 100% EV penetration, compared to the base case scenario. If EVs are charged with renewable energy sources only, then electrifying all passenger vehicles can prevent 330 premature deaths per year, which is equivalent to $3.8 Billion (2016$CAD) in social benefits. When the benefit of EV deployment is normalized per vehicle, it is higher than most incentives provided by the government, indicating that EV incentives can generate high social benefits.

In China, the huge amounts of energy consumption caused severe carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) concentration in the soil and ambient air. This paper summarized that the references published in 2008–2018 and suggested that biomass, coal and vehicular emissions were categorized as major sources of PAHs in China. In 2016, the emitted PAHs in China due to the incomplete combustion of fuel was about 32720 tonnes, and the contribution of the emission sources was the sequence: biomass combustion > residential coal combustion > vehicle > coke production > refine oil > power plant > natural gas combustion. The total amount of PAHs emission in China at 2016 was significantly decreased due to the decrease of the proportion of crop resides burning (indoor and open burning).The geographical distribution of PAHs concentration demonstrated that PAHs concentration in the urban soil is 0.092–4.733 μg/g. At 2008–2012, the serious PAHs concentration in the urban soil occurred in the eastern China, which was shifted to western China after 2012.The concentration of particulate and gaseous PAHs in China is 1–151 ng/m3 and 1.08–217 ng/m3, respectively. The concentration of particle-bound PAHs in the southwest and eastern region are lower than that in north and central region of China. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) analysis demonstrates that ILCR in the soil and ambient air in China is below the acceptable cancer risk level of 10−6 recommended by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which mean that there is a low potential PAHs carcinogenic risk for the soil and ambient air in China.

With the increased numbers of nuclear power plants constructed along the east coast of China, it is important to know radioactive sources and transport pathways between land and sea, in order to better understand the impact of these nuclear facilities to the marine environment. Two sediment cores collected from the East China Sea dated to 1959–2010 were analyzed for long-lived radioactive 129I and stable 127I. It was observed that 129I levels (129I/127I ratio of (15.0–75.0) × 10−12) were significantly increased compared to the pre-nuclear value (129I/127I = 1.5 × 10−12). Some 129I peaks were observed in layers of 1959, 1966, 1971 and 1976 (1977), corresponding to the atmospheric nuclear weapon tests at Pacific Proving Grounds and Lop Nor. The high values of 129I after the late 1970s are attributed to the releases from the European reprocessing plants. In addition to ocean current transport, the atmospheric dispersion through the interaction of the Westerlies with East Asia monsoon is the important pathway of large-scale transport of pollutants from high latitude West Europe to middle latitude East Asia. Riverine input is the main transport pathway of radioactive pollutants released from Lop Nor to the East China Sea through the atmospheric dispersion, deposition and runoff processes.

Recently it has been shown that there are two types of magnetite particles in the human brain, some, which occur naturally and are jagged in appearance, and others that arise from industrial sources, such as coal fired power plants, and are spherical. In order to confirm the latter, the magnetic component of coal ash is first purified and characterized by XRD, showing that it is magnetite with an average particle size of 211 nm. Studies confirm the coal ash magnetic behavior, and that the magnetite is not bound to the other components of coal ash but exist as an isolatable component. SEM studies confirm that in the process of burning coal at very high temperatures for industrial uses, the magnetite formed is spherically shaped, as recent studies of brain tissues of highly exposed urban residents have found. As such, the use of coal for industrial applications such as coking in the production of steel and in power plants is indicated to be a major source of the spherical magnetic combustion-associated magnetite fine particle and nanoparticle environmental pollution. The capacity of these magnetic particles to penetrate and damage the blood-brain-barrier and the early development of Alzheimer's disease hallmarks in exposed populations calls for detail analysis of magnetic fine and nanoparticle distribution across the world.Summation: Industrial coal usage produces spherical magnetic particles and nanoparticles, identical to those associated with neurological disorders.

The city of London, UK, has seen in recent years an increase in the number of high-rise/multi-storey buildings (“skyscrapers”) with roof heights reaching 150 m and more, with the Shard being a prime example with a height of ∼310 m. This changing cityscape together with recent plans of local authorities of introducing Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP) led to a detailed study in which CFD and wind tunnel studies were carried out to assess the effect of such high-rise buildings on the dispersion of air pollution in their vicinity. A new, open-source simulator, FLUIDITY, which incorporates the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method, was implemented; the simulated results were subsequently validated against experimental measurements from the EnFlo wind tunnel. The novelty of the LES methodology within FLUIDITY is based on the combination of an adaptive, unstructured, mesh with an eddy-viscosity tensor (for the sub-grid scales) that is anisotropic. The simulated normalised mean concentrations results were compared to the corresponding wind tunnel measurements, showing for most detector locations good correlations, with differences ranging from 3% to 37%. The validation procedure was followed by the simulation of two further hypothetical scenarios, in which the heights of buildings surrounding the source building were increased. The results showed clearly how the high-rise buildings affected the surrounding air flows and dispersion patterns, with the generation of “dead-zones” and high-concentration “hotspots” in areas where these did not previously exist. The work clearly showed that complex CFD modelling can provide useful information to urban planners when changes to cityscapes are considered, so that design options can be tested against environmental quality criteria.
