Pharmaceuticals occurrence in a WWTP with significant industrial contribution and its input into the river system

Occurrence and removal of 81 representative Pharmaceutical Active Compounds (PhACs) were assessed in a municipal WWTP located in a highly industrialized area, with partial water reuse after UV tertiary treatment and discharge to a Mediterranean river. Water monitoring was performed in an integrated way at different points in the WWTP and river along three seasons.Consistent differences between therapeutic classes were observed in terms of influent concentration, removal efficiencies and seasonal variation. Conventional (primary and secondary) treatment was unable to completely remove numerous compounds and UV-based tertiary treatment played a complementary role for some of them. Industrial activity influence was highlighted in terms of PhACs presence and seasonal distribution.Even if global WWTP effluent impact on the studied river appeared to be minor, PhACs resulted widespread pollutants in river waters. Contamination can be particularly critical in summer in water scarcity areas, when water flow decreases considerably.

The use, environmental fate and ecological risks of antibiotics applied in tilapia cage farming were investigated in the Tha Chin and Mun rivers in Thailand. Information on antibiotic use was collected through interviewing 29 farmers, and the concentrations of the most commonly used antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) and enrofloxacin (ENR), were monitored in river water and sediment samples. Moreover, we assessed the toxicity of OTC and ENR on tropical freshwater invertebrates and performed a risk assessment for aquatic ecosystems. All interviewed tilapia farmers reported to routinely use antibiotics. Peak water concentrations for OTC and ENR were 49 and 1.6 μg/L, respectively. Antibiotics were most frequently detected in sediments with concentrations up to 6908 μg/kg d.w. for OTC, and 2339 μg/kg d.w. for ENR. The results of this study indicate insignificant short-term risks for primary producers and invertebrates, but suggest that the studied aquaculture farms constitute an important source of antibiotic pollution.
Afficher plus [+] Moins [-]Homologue specific analysis of a polyether trisiloxane surfactant in German surface waters and study on its hydrolysis

The occurrence of a polyether trisiloxane surfactant in the ng L−1 range in German surface waters is reported for the first time. The studied surfactant does not ubiquitously occur in the aquatic environment but can reach surface waters on a local scale. As a first step towards the understanding of the environmental fate, the hydrolysis was studied according to the OECD guideline 111. It confirmed that the trisiloxane surfactant is sensitive to hydrolysis and that the hydrolysis rate strongly depends on the pH and the temperature. If one takes only into account the hydrolysis, the trisiloxane surfactant could persist several weeks in river water (the half-life in water is approximately 50 days at pH 7, 25 °C, and an initial concentration of 2 mg L−1). A degradation product, more polar than the initial trisiloxane surfactant, was identified by high resolution mass spectrometry.

A spatially-explicit version of the recent multimedia fate model SoilPlus was developed and applied to predict the runoff of three pesticides in a small agricultural watershed in north-eastern Italy. In order to evaluate model response to increasing spatial resolution, a tiered simulation approach was adopted, also using a dynamic model for surface water (DynA model), to predict the fate of pesticides in runoff water and sediment, and concentrations in river water. Simulation outputs were compared to water concentrations measured in the basin. Results showed that a high spatial resolution and scenario complexity improved model predictions of metolachlor and terbuthylazine in runoff to an acceptable performance (R2 = 0.64–0.70). The importance was also shown of a field-based database of properties (i.e. soil texture and organic carbon, rainfall and water flow, pesticides half-life in soil) in reducing the distance between predicted and measured surface water concentrations and its relevance for risk assessment.

The partitioning and bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and fish samples from the Dongjiang River (DR), Pearl River (PR), and the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were examined. Although PAHs are much lower in PRE than in DR or PR, PAHs in some fish species are significantly higher in PRE than in DR or PR. Aqueous or particulate PAHs respectively show significant correlations with dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic matter, and chlorophyll a, suggesting that biological pumping effect regulates their distribution. The in situ partitioning coefficients (logKoc) for PAHs are one order magnitude higher than the empirical logKoc–logKow correlation. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) is slightly higher for the marine fish than for the freshwater fish. The above phenomena indicate that BCF may vary due to the diversity of fish species, feeding habits, and metabolism of PAHs in fish.

Concentrations of heavy metals in river water and sediment were investigated in nine estuaries along the coast of Bohai Bay, Northern China. Multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis, in combination with metal concentration analysis and correlation analysis, were used to identify the possible sources of the metals and the pollution pattern in nine estuaries along the coast of Bohai Bay. The environmental risks of metals, evaluated by sediment quality guidelines and background values, revealed Hg contamination in the estuaries. However, levels of Cd in estuarine sediments were low, and they were less than those levels in river sediments, partly due to the high mobility and dilution of river or seawater. Cd did not contribute to sediment deposits in estuaries. High organic matter from effluents from large municipal sewage treatment plants was predominantly responsible for restricting Hg mobility from the river to Bohai Bay.

Median enterococci counts of beach water samples gradually increased at statistically significant levels (χ2: 26.53, df: 4; p<0.0001) with increasing proximity to river influx. The difference in proportion of antibiotic resistant enterococci in beach water and river water samples was statistically significant (p<0.05) for the tested antibiotics with river isolates generally presenting higher resistance frequencies. Virulence genes cyl, esp, gelE and asa were detected at varying frequencies (7.32%, 21.95%, 100% and 63.41% respectively) among river isolates. On the other hand, the prevalence of these genes was lower (0%, 20%, 67.27% and 41.82% respectively) among beach water isolates. Multi-Locus-Sequence-Typing analysis of Enterococcusfaecalis presented four sequence types (ST) one of which shared six out of seven tested loci with ST6, a member of the clonal complex of multi-drug resistant strains associated with hospital outbreaks.
Afficher plus [+] Moins [-]A New Dispersive Liquid–Liquid Microextraction Method for the Preconcentration of Copper Using 4-Phenyl-3-Thiosemicarbazide and FAAS Detection

The aim of this study is to develop a new method for the preconcentration of copper via a dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method using 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide as a ligand and determination with FAAS in different sample types such as plants, soils and natural waters such as seawater. Optimum experimental conditions were determined, and the applicability of the proposed dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method was investigated. In the first step of the work, the parameters that affect complex formation and extraction, such as volume of extractant/disperser solvent, pH and concentration of the chelating agent, NaCl and surfactant, were optimised. The interference effects from potential concomitants on the determination of the Cu(II) ion were investigated in synthetic mixtures that contain high levels of these ions. These results showed the analytical applicability of the proposed method in different kinds of samples. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curve was linear over the range 2–600 μg L⁻¹of copper, and the detection limit was 0.69 μg L⁻¹in the original solution (3 Sb/m). The accuracy of the developed method was checked by analysing certified reference materials (QCS-19 (high purity standard), LGC 6156 (harbour sediment) and NBS 1572 (citrus leaves)). Results obtained were in agreement with certified values with a t test showing that no significant differences at the 95 % confidence interval levels were found. The proposed method was applied to seawater, river water, and plant and soil samples. The recovery values for spiked water samples were between 99.7 and 117.3 %.

Water samples collected in 1995 and 2007 from the Shinano and Agano rivers were examined to determine the types and concentrations of pesticides and their effects on tap water in typical rice production areas of Japan. Tap water originating from the Shinano River was also sampled in 2007, in Niigata City, Japan. Pesticides were present in the river and tap water throughout the year. Comparison of 13 pesticides common to both 1995 and 2007 series revealed that the frequency of individual pesticide occurrence and concentrations were decreasing. Riverine pesticides were classified into five groups according to the period of their appearance and changes in concentration. Pesticides were detected at the time of application to, and drainage from, paddy fields. Pesticide concentrations in tap water showed notable decline following rapid sand-filtration combined with granular activated carbon. The detection index (DI) for tap water and Shinano River water did not exceed a value of 1. Herbicides contributed most to the DI.

A simple, rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method was developed for the determination of trace amounts of copper by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). N,N′-bis-(2-hydroxy-5-bromobenzyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-diiminopropane was used as the chelating ligand. Several analytical parameters affecting the microextraction efficiency such as, sample pH, volume of extraction solvent (carbon tetrachloride), concentrations of the chelating ligand and NaCl, and sample volume were investigated and optimized. The effect of the interfering ions on the recovery of copper was also examined. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit (3σ) was 0.75 μg L⁻¹for copper with a sample volume of 10 mL, and a preconcentration factor of 20 was achieved. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D) for ten independent determinations of a 10 μg L⁻¹solution of Cu(II) was 2.3 %. In order to verify the accuracy of the developed method, different certified reference materials (SLRS-5, QCS-19, Rice flour unpolished high level of Cd NIES 10c) were analyzed and the results obtained were in good agreement with the certified values. The proposed method was applied to tap water, river water, seawater, rice flour, and wheat flour samples. The percentage recovery values for spiked water samples were between 95.4 and 108.4.
