Straw and biochar amendments have been shown to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in arable land; however, their effects on hydrological fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which may offset the benefits of C sequestration amounts remain uncertain. Therefore, we conducted a three-year field study that included four treatments (CK, control with no fertilizer; NPK, synthetic N fertilizer; RSDNPK, synthetic N fertilizer plus crop residues; BCNPK, synthetic N fertilizer plus biochar of crop straw) to investigate the effects of straw and biochar amendment on DOC losses through hydrological pathways of overland flow and interflow from a wheat-maize rotation system in the subtropical montane agricultural landscape. We detected substantial intra- and inter-annual variations in runoff discharge, DOC concentration, and DOC fluxes for both overland flow and interflow pathways, which were primarily attributed to variations in rainfall amount and intensity. On average, the DOC concentrations for interflow (2.98 mg C L⁻¹) were comparable with those for overland flow (2.71 mg C L⁻¹) throughout the three-year experiment. However, average annual DOC fluxes for interflow were approximately 2.60 times greater than those for overland flow, which probably related to higher runoff discharges of interflow than overland flow. Compared to the control, on average, the N fertilization treatments significantly decreased the annual DOC fluxes of overland flow and significantly increased annual DOC fluxes of interflow. Relative to the application of synthetic N fertilizer only, on average, crop straw amendment practice significantly increased annual DOC fluxes of interflow by 28.7%, while decreasing annual DOC fluxes of overland flow by 12.0%; in contrast, biochar amendment practice decreased annual DOC fluxes of interflow by 25.3% while increasing annual DOC fluxes of overland flow by 44.6%. Overall, considering both overland flow and interflow, crop straw amendment significantly increased hydrological DOC fluxes, whereas biochar had no significant effects on hydrological DOC fluxes throughout the three-year experiment. We conclude that crop straw incorporation strategies that aim to increase SOC stocks may enhance hydrological losses of DOC, thereby in turn offsetting its benefits in the subtropical montane agricultural landscapes.

Microbial degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is the major channel for their decontamination from different environments. Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradations of PAHs in batch reactors with single or multiple bacterial strains have been intensively studied, but the cooperative mechanism of functional PAH-degrading populations at the community level under field conditions remains to be explored. We determined the composition of PAH-degrading populations in the bacterial community and PAHs in farmland and wasteland soils contaminated by coking plants using high-throughput sequencing and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. The results indicated that the PAH content of farmland was significantly lower than that of wasteland, which was attributed to the lower content of low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs and benzo [k]fluoranthene. The soil physicochemical properties were significantly different between farmland and wasteland. The naphthalene content was related to the soil organic carbon (SOC) and pH, while phenanthrene was related to the nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻-N) and water content (WC). The pH, nitrite (NO₂⁻-N), SOC, NO₃⁻-N and WC were correlated with the content of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs and total PAHs. The relative abundances of the phyla Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, and Firmicutes and the genera Nocardioides, Bacillus, Lysobacter, Mycobacterium, Streptomyces, and Steroidobacter in farmland soil were higher than those in wasteland soil. The soil physicochemical characteristics of farmland increased the diversities of the PAH degrader and total bacterial communities, which were significantly negatively related to the total PAHs and LMW PAHs. Subsequently, the connectivity and complexity of the network in farmland were lower than those in wasteland, while the module containing a module hub capable of degrading PAHs was identified in the network of farmland soil. Structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis showed that the soil characteristics and optimized abundance and diversity of the bacterial community in farmland were beneficial for the dissipation efficiency of PAHs.

A comprehensive understanding of the patterns and controlling factors of nitrate accumulation in intensive vegetable production is essential to solve this problem. For the first time, the national patterns and controlling factors of nitrate accumulation in soil of vegetable systems in China were analysed by compiling 1262 observations from 117 published articles. The results revealed that the nitrate accumulation at 0–100 cm, 100–200 cm, 200–300 cm, and >300 cm were 504, 390, 349, and 244 kg N ha⁻¹, with accumulation rates of 62, 54, 19, and 16 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ for plastic greenhouse vegetables (PG); for open field vegetables (OF), they were 264, 217, 228, and 242 kg N ha⁻¹ with accumulation rates of 26, 24, 18, and 10 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, respectively. Nitrate accumulation at 0–100 cm, 0–200 cm, and 0–400 cm accounted for 5%, 11%, and 17% of accumulated nitrogen (N) inputs for PG, and represented 4%, 9%, and 13% of accumulated N inputs for OF. Nitrogen input rates and soil pH had positive effects and soil organic carbon, water input rate, and carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) had negative effects on nitrate accumulation in root zone (0–100 cm soil). Nitrate accumulation in deep vadose zone (>100 cm soil) was positively correlated with N and water input rates, and was negatively correlated with soil organic carbon, C/N, and the clay content. Thus, for a given vegetable soil with relatively stable soil pH and soil clay content, reducing N and water inputs, and increasing soil organic carbon and C/N are effective measures to control nitrate accumulation.

Growing applications of nanoagrichemicals have resulted in their increasing accumulation in agricultural soils, which could modify soil properties and affect soil health. A greenhouse pot trial was conducted to determine the effects of three metallic nanoagrichemicals on several fundamental chemical properties of a rice paddy soil, including zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) at 100 mg/kg, and silicon oxide nanoparticles (SiO₂ NPs) at 500 mg/kg, as well as their bulk and ionic counterparts. The investigated soil amendments displayed significant and distinctive impact on the examined soil chemical properties relevant to agricultural production, including soil pH, redox potential, soil organic carbon (SOC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and plant available As. For example, all amendments increased the bulk soil pH at day 47 to some extent, but the increase was substantially higher for SiO₃²⁻ (37.7%) than other amendments (5.8%–13.7%). Soil Eh was elevated markedly at day 47 after the addition of soil amendments in both the bulk soil (45.9%–74.4%) and rice rhizosphere soil (20.3%–68.9%). CuO NPs and Cu²⁺ generally exhibited greater impact on soil chemical properties than other agrichemicals. Significantly different responses to soil amendments were observed between bulk and rhizosphere soils, suggesting the essential role of plants in affecting soil properties and their responses to environmental disturbance. Overall, our results confirmed that the tested amendments could have remarkable impacts on the fundamental chemical properties of rice paddy soils.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has a significant influence on soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation in forest ecosystems. Microbial residues, as by-products of microbial anabolism, account for a significant fraction of soil C pools. However, how N deposition affects the accumulation of soil microbial residues in different forest biomes remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of six/seven-year N additions on microbial residues (amino sugar biomarkers) in eight forests from tropical to boreal zone in eastern China. Our results showed a minor change in the soil microbial residue concentrations but a significant change in the contribution of microbial residue-C to SOC after N addition. The contribution of fungal residue-C to SOC decreased under low N addition (50 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) in the tropical secondary forest (−19%), but increased under high N addition (100 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) in the temperate Korean pine mixed forest (+21%). The contribution of bacterial residue-C to SOC increased under the high N addition in the subtropical Castanopsis carlesii forest (+26%) and under the low N addition in the temperate birch forest (+38%), respectively. The responses of microbial residue-C in SOC to N addition depended on the changes in soil total N concentration and fungi to bacteria ratio under N addition and climate. Taken together, these findings provide the experimental evidence that N addition diversely regulates the formation and composition of microbial-derived C in SOC in forest ecosystems.

In this study, polymetal(iod)s-contaminated mining soil from the Huainan coalfield, Anhui, China, was used to investigate the synergistic effects of biochar (BC), raw coal (RC), and hydrothermally treated coal (HTC) on the immobilization, speciation, transformation, and accumulation of Cd, Cr, and Pb in a soil–plant system via geochemical speciation and advanced spectroscopic approaches. The results revealed that the BC-2% and BC–HTC amendments were more effective than the individual RC, and/or HTC amendments to reduce ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA)-extractable Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations by elevating soil pH and soil organic carbon content. Soil pH increased by 1.5 and 2.5 units after BC-2% and BC–HTC amendments, respectively, which reduced EDTA-extractable Cd, Cr, and Pb to more stabilized forms. Metal speciation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses suggested that the BC–HTC amendment stimulated the transformation of reactive Cd, Cr, and Pb (exchangeable and carbonate-bound) states to less reachable (oxide and residual) states to decrease the toxicity of these heavy metals. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses suggested that reduction and adsorption by soil colloids may be involved in the mechanism of Cd(II), Cr(VI), and Pb(II) immobilization via hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, and amide groups in the BC and HTC. Additionally, the BC-2% and BC–HTC amendments reduced Cd and Pb accumulation in maize shoots, which could mainly be ascribed to the reduction of EDTA-extractable heavy metals in the soil and more functional groups in the roots, thus inhibiting metal ion translocation by providing the electrons necessary for immobilization, compared to those in roots grown in the unamended soil. Therefore, the combined application of BC and HTC was more effective than the individual application of these amendments to minimize the leaching, availability, and exchangeable states of Cd, Cr, and Pb in polymetal(iod)s-contaminated mining soil and accumulation in maize.

The application of surfactants is an effective way to inhibit the migration of organic contaminants (OCs) from soil to plants, and thus would be a great candidate method for producing safe agricultural products in organic-contaminated farmland. In this study, it was found that cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTMAB) reduced the OCs in cabbage by 22.0–64.1%, and those in lettuce by 18.8–36.5%. We developed a mathematical model to predict the accumulation of OCs in plants in the presence of surfactants. The successive partitioning of OCs among three phases, namely, soil, soil water and plant roots, was considered. The equilibrium of OC between the soil and soil water was scaled using the sorption coefficient of OCs on soils normalized by the soil organic carbon (Kₒc) and carbon-normalized OCs sorption coefficient with the sorbed surfactants (Kₛₛ). To precisely calculate the Kₒc and Kₛₛ, the bioavailable and bound OCs were measured using a sequential extraction method. Linear positive correlations between the logarithm of Kₒc (or Kₛₛ) and the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kₒw) of OCs were established for laterite soils, paddy soils and black soils. In the presence of CTMAB, the equilibrium of OCs between the soil water and plant roots was scaled using the carbon-normalized OC sorption coefficient with the sorbed surfactants (Kₛf), whose logarithmic value was linearly correlated with the log Kₒw of the OCs. A three-phase-successive partition-limited model was developed based on these relationships, demonstrating an average prediction accuracy of 76.6 ± 36.8%. Our results indicated that the decrease in bioavailable OCs in soils and the increase in sorption of OCs on roots should be taken into consideration when predicting plant uptake. This research provides a validated mathematical model for predicting the concentration of OCs in plants in the presence of surfactants.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has a major influence upon sorption/desorption and transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in soil environments. However, the molecular mechanisms of DOC sorption and its effects on aged HOC desorption in contaminated soils still remain largely unclear. Here, effects of three different DOC (one from commercial peat and two from biochars produced at 300 °C and 500 °C pyrolysis temperatures, respectively) and oxalate (as a reference) on abiotic desorption behavior of aged phenanthrene from three agricultural soils were investigated. Results showed that desorption of aged phenanthrene from soils was predominantly dependent on soil organic carbon content. The presence of DOC and oxalate resulted in higher desorption of phenanthrene compared to water alone, and the effects were positively related to soil organic carbon content and DOC/oxalate concentration. The facilitating effects of DOC were further increased during the second consecutive desorption, whereas oxalate had no such effect. Ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry confirmed the molecular fractionation of DOC at the soil-water interface during DOC sorption. Specifically, the DOC molecules with O-rich moieties were preferentially adsorbed, whereas the molecules with phenolic and aromatic structures were selectively retained in the soil solutions through competitive displacement and co-sorption reactions during sorption. The enriched phenyl structures in the retained DOC facilitated its association with phenanthrene in the solutions and thus the release of phenanthrene from the soils. In contrast, oxalate replaced some organic carbon from the soils and thus released the associated phenanthrene into the solutions. Our findings highlight the importance of the molecular composition and structure of DOC for the desorption of phenanthrene in soil-water environments, which may help improve our understanding of the release and transport of organic compounds in the environments.

Transformation from natural forests to planted forests in tropical regions is an expanding global phenomenon causing major modifications of land cover and soil properties, e.g. soil organic carbon (SOC). This study investigated accumulations of POPs in soils under eucalyptus and rubber forests as compared with adjacent natural forests on Hainan Island, China. Results showed that due to the greater forest filter effect and the higher SOC, the natural forest have accumulated larger amounts of POPs in the top 20 cm soil. Based on correlation and air-soil equilibrium analysis, we highlighted the importance of SOC in the distribution of POPs. It is assumed that the elevated mobility of POPs in the planted forests was caused by greater loss of SOC and extensive leaching in the soil profile. This suggests that a better understanding of global POPs fate should take into consideration the role of planted forests.

Rapid temperature rise in Arctic permafrost impacts not only the degradation of stored soil organic carbon (SOC) and climate feedback, but also the production and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) toxin that can endanger humans, as well as wildlife in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Currently little is known concerning the effects of rapid permafrost thaw on microbial methylation and how SOC degradation is coupled to MeHg biosynthesis. Here we describe the effects of warming on MeHg production in an Arctic soil during an 8-month anoxic incubation experiment. Net MeHg production increased >10 fold in both organic- and mineral-rich soil layers at warmer (8 °C) than colder (−2 °C) temperatures. The type and availability of labile SOC, such as reducing sugars and ethanol, were particularly important in fueling the rapid initial biosynthesis of MeHg. Freshly amended mercury was more readily methylated than preexisting mercury in the soil. Additionally, positive correlations between mercury methylation and methane and ferrous ion production indicate linkages between SOC degradation and MeHg production. These results show that climate warming and permafrost thaw could potentially enhance MeHg production by an order of magnitude, impacting Arctic terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems by increased exposure to mercury through bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food web.
