Microbial source tracking (MST) DNA-based assays have been used to successfully solve fecal pollution problems in many countries, particularly in developed nations. However, their application in developing countries has been limited but continues to increase. In this study, sixteen endpoint and quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays targeting universal and human-, swine-, and cattle-specific Bacteroidales gene markers were modified for endpoint PCR, evaluated for their performance with sewage and fecal samples from the Tha Chin watershed and subsequently validated with samples from the Chao Phraya watershed, Thailand. Sample sizes of 81 composite samples (from over 1620 individual samples) of farm animals of each type as well as 19 human sewage samples from the Tha Chin watershed were calculated using a stratified random sampling design to achieve a 90% confidence interval and an expected prevalence (i.e., desired assay's sensitivity) of 0.80. The best universal and human-, swine-, and cattle-specific fecal markers were BacUni EP, HF183/BFDrev EP, Pig-2-Bac EP, and Bac3 assays, respectively. The detection limits for these assays ranged from 30 to 3000 plasmid copies per PCR. The positive predictive values were high in universal and swine- and cattle-specific markers (85–100%), while the positive predictive value of the human-specific assay was 52.2%. The negative predictive values in all assays were relatively high (90.8–100%). A suite of PCR assays in Thailand was established for potential MST use in environmental waters, which supports the worldwide applicability of Bacteroidales gene markers. This study also emphasizes the importance of using a proper sample size in assessing the performance of MST markers in a new geographic region.

Sea turtles are globally endangered and face daily anthropogenic threats, including pollution. However, there is a lack of ecotoxicological information on sea turtles, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. This study aims to determine pollutant levels of foraging green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in South China, including Hong Kong, Guangdong and Taiwan, as a basis for their conservation. Scute, liver and muscle tissues of stranded green turtles were analysed for levels of 17 trace elements and methylmercury (MeHg) (n = 86 for scute and n = 14 for liver) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (n = 11 for muscle and n = 13 for liver). Ten-fold higher levels of Pb, Ba, V and Tl and 40-fold greater Cd levels were measured in green turtle livers in South China relative to other studies conducted over 10 years ago. Measured PBDE levels were also 27-fold and 50-fold greater than those reported in Australia and Japan. These results warrant further investigation of potential toxicological risks to green turtles in South China and their source rookeries in Malaysia, Micronesia, Indonesia, Marshall Islands, Japan and Taiwan. Research should target monitoring pollutant levels in sea turtles within the West Pacific/Southeast Asia regional management unit spanning East Asia to Southeast Asia to fill in knowledge gaps, in particular in areas such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines where less or no data is available and where foraging grounds of sea turtles have been identified.

Among Southeast Asian countries, Thailand has gradually accustomed to extremely prompt urbanization, motorization, and industrialization. Chonburi and Rayong provinces are two provinces involved in “eastern seaboard” industrial zones, which is an emerging economic region that plays a key role in Thailand's economy. The 2013 Rayong oil spill did not only cause damages to the coastal and maritime environment, but also undermine trust in the overall safety system and negatively affect the investor confidence. In this study, 69 coastal soils collected around Koh Samed Island were chemically extracted and analyzed for 15 PAHs by using a Shimadzu GCMS-QP2010 Ultra system comprising a high-speed performance system with ASSP function. In this study, numerous diagnostic binary ratios were applied to identify potential sources of PAHs. Advanced statistical techniques such as hierarchical cluster analysis coupled with principal component analysis were also conducted for further investigations of source identifications.

This study determines uptake and accumulation of radionuclides and heavy metals by Pluchea indica and Avicennia marina and evaluates phytoremediation potential via greenhouse and field experiments. P. indica and A. marina are considered excluders for ⁴⁰K and ²⁶²Ra, and Pb since roots accumulated them in higher quantities compared to other plant parts, and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and transfer factor (TF) values for Pb, and ⁴⁰K and ²⁶²Ra were >1, respectively. Absorbed dose rate in air (D) showed significant values in sediments, which were generally over the maximum recommended value of 55nGyh⁻¹. Phytostabilization of radionuclides and heavy metals may serve as an appropriate strategy for mangrove-polluted areas. D values in sediments were considered sufficiently high to recommend long-term monitoring. Radionuclide activities may increase in the food chain via uptake and accumulation of edible plants, ultimately resulting in harm to human health.

Most lost fishing gear is made of non-biodegradable plastics that may sink to the sea floor or drift around in currents. It may remain unnoticed until it shows up on coral reefs, beaches and in other coastal habitats. Stony corals have fragile skeletons and soft tissues that can easily become damaged when they get in contact with lost fishing gear. During a dive survey around Koh Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, the impact of lost fishing gear (nets, ropes, cages, lines) was studied on corals representing six different growth forms: branching, encrusting, foliaceous, free-living, laminar, and massive. Most gear (>95%) contained plastic. Besides absence of damage (ND), three categories of coral damage were assessed: fresh tissue loss (FTL), tissue loss with algal growth (TLAG), and fragmentation (FR). The position of the corals in relation to the fishing gear was recorded as either growing underneath (Un) or on top (On), whereas corals adjacent to the gear (Ad) were used as controls. Nets formed the dominant type of lost gear, followed by ropes, lines and cages, respectively. Branching corals were most commonly found in contact with the gear and also around it. Tubastraea micranthus was the most commonly encountered coral species, either Un, On, or Ad. Corals underneath gear showed most damage, which predominantly consisted of tissue loss. Fragmentation was less common than expected, which may be related to the low fragility of T. micranthus as dominant branching species. Even if nets serve as substrate for corals, it is recommended to remove them from reefs, where they form a major component of the plastic pollution and cause damage to corals and other reef organisms.

Open burning emissions strongly influence smoke haze problems in Southeast Asia (SEA). The main objective of this study is to investigate the percent contribution of emissions from local and transboundary on air pollutant concentrations, particularly PM10 (particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10 μm), using the potential source contribution function (PSCF). A three-day backward trajectory (BWT) analysis of air mass movements at the Chiang Mai Air Quality Monitoring (CM-AQM) station in the dry season (February–April) during the years 2010–2015 was run and clustered. It was found that the air masses mainly originated from the southwest of the CM-AQM station. The correlation between the PM10 concentration and the number of active fires during the three-day BWT showed the highest correlation in April (R² = 0.64). The PSCF values showed that most of the high-potential sources (0.9–1.0) and emissions were transboundary from Myanmar (73.2%) and within Thailand (26.8%). The major open burning source during March and April was found in the agricultural areas of Myanmar, and the second-greatest source was found in the forested areas of Myanmar. However, the agricultural areas of Thailand contributed to the PM10 concentration in northern Thailand (NT) in February. Thus, this result shows that potential point sources of pollutants such as biomass burning, including those transported across national boundaries, can be investigated and determined their locations in the haze episodes of NT.

The relationship between land use and microbial community structure at seven sites along the Lower Mekong River, between Thailand and the Loa People’s Democratic Republic, was investigated using Illumina next-generation sequencing of the V5–V6 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene. In total, 14,470 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were observed. Community composition was significantly different between sampling years. Moraxellaceae and Comamonadaceae were the predominant bacterial families in upstream sites, which included agricultural and urban areas in the Loei and Nong Khai provinces of Thailand. Members of the family Comamonadaceae were prevalent in agricultural and urban sites in Bueng Kan Province, while Moraxellaceae and Burkholderiaceae were the major families in a site downstream of an urban area in the Nakhon Phanom Province of Thailand. The bacterial community observed from a forested area of Patam National Park in Thailand showed greatest diversity, and several major bacterial families including Comamonadaceae, Moraxellaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae were more dominant than other sites. The diversity of fecal indicator bacteria, determined by ERIC-PCR DNA fingerprinting, indicated the presence of 29 strains of Escherichia coli and 21 strains of Enterococcus, while TP-RAPD patterns represented six species of Enterococcus. Results of this study indicated that although the difference in the distribution of bacterial phyla and families was found among sampling sites, the bacterial community composition, based on the presence of OTUs, continuously retained its signature across approximately 758 km along the Lower Mekong River, regardless of the type of land use. Water parameters, including temperature, turbidity, DO, and air temperature, also differentially affected the abundance of bacterial families along the Mekong River.

Maize fields near Mae Tao Creek in Pha Te Village, Tak Province, Thailand are contaminated with Zn, Cd, and Pb. This research studied the interaction between levels of the metals contaminating the soil and maize development, heavy metal accumulation in the seeds, and the soil bacterial community structure. Our field experiment was carried out in five plots with metal contents that gradually decreased from a high level near the creek to a lower level further into the land: Zn 380–4883 mg kg⁻¹, Cd 6–85 mg kg⁻¹, and Pb 34–154 mg kg⁻¹. Cultivation and isolation on nutrient agar (NA) was utilized to study the culturable bacterial community, and polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) was utilized for the unculturable bacterial communities. All statistical analyses clearly indicated that rainfall and irrigation were the main factors affecting total Zn concentration and bioavailable Zn, Cd, and Pb in the field. The variation in the contents of the heavy metals was weakly correlated with the culturable bacterial community indices (Shannon-Wiener, evenness and richness), but the contents resulted in a difference in the overall diversity of the bacteria in the soil. The richness, numbers of culturable rhizobacteria, and maize growth stage significantly affected the amount of Zn and Cd that accumulated in the roots. In addition, maize accumulated a high level of Zn in the seeds, while the low contents of Cd and Pb in the seeds were below our limit of detection. The results obtained could be informative for the management of maize cultivation in the area.

Rice cultivation and energy use for rice production can produce the environmental impacts, especially related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Also, rice straw open burning by farmers generally practiced after harvesting stage in Thailand for removing the residues in the rice field is associated with emissions of air pollutants, especially particulate matter formation that affects human health and global climate. This study assessed the environmental burdens, consisting of GHG emissions, energy use, and particulate matter formation (PM10), from rice cultivation in Thailand by life cycle assessment (LCA) and compared the environmental burdens of rice straw management scenarios: open burning, incorporation into soil, and direct combustion for electricity generation. The data were collected from the rice production cooperative in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand, via onsite records and face-to-face questionnaires in 2016. The environmental impacts were evaluated from cradle-to-farm gate. The results showed that the total GHG emissions were 0.64 kg CO₂-eq per kilogram of paddy rice, the total energy use was 1.80 MJ per kilogram of paddy rice and the PM10 emissions were 0.42 g PM10-eq per kilogram of paddy rice. The results of rice straw management scenarios showed that rice straw open burning had the highest GHG and PM10 emissions. However, rice straw utilization by incorporation into soil and direct combustion for electricity generation could reduce these impacts substantially.

Metal contamination in seafood has raised public health concerns, especially for local residents who live in coastal areas. In this study, the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) were determined in the marine bivalve, Marcia optima, as well as in water, and sediment samples collected from the coastal area of Phuket Bay, Thailand. The results showed that metal concentrations in sediments (4.05–7.14, 16.68–18.13, 164–213 mg kg⁻¹ for Cd, Pb, and Zn, respectively) and water samples (0.16–0.44, 0.15–0.26, and 0.32–0.48 mg L⁻¹ for Cd, Pb, and Zn, respectively) were below the threshold effects concentration of the sediment quality guidelines for adverse effects to occur and the marine water quality standards of Thailand. A human risk assessment was performed and the results showed that the risks associated with M. optima consumption at Saphan Hin and Paklok were negligible for most of the metals studied, with the maximum estimated daily intake value being observed for Zn (0.00663 mg kg⁻¹ per day) at Saphan Hin. In addition, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Hg would be unlikely to pose a risk to human health with a hazard quotient of less than 1, with only the bioaccumulation factor of Zn being detectable in both locations (0.034 and 0.026 at Saphan Hin and Paklok, respectively). However, continuous monitoring is encouraged to prevent the risks associated with the consumption of metal-contaminated seafood.
