The impact of land use type on the content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and the associated ecological and human health risks has drawn great attention. Consequently, in this study, top- and subsurface soil samples were collected from areas with four different land uses (i.e., cropland, forest, grassland, and developed area) and the total contents of Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined. Geostatistical analysis, self-organizing map (SOM), and positive matrix factorization (PMF), ecological risk assessment (ERA) and human health risk assessment (HRA) were applied and used to classify and identify the contamination sources and assess the potential risk. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was applied to clarify the relationship of land use with PTE contents and risk. The PTE contents in all topsoil samples surpassed the respective background concentrations of China and corresponding subsurface concentrations. However, the ecological risk of all soil samples remained at a moderate or considerable level across the four land use types. Developed area and cropland showed a higher ecological risk than the other two land use types. Industrial discharges (32.8%), agricultural inputs (22.6%), natural sources (23.7%), and traffic emissions (20.9%) were the primary PTE sources in the tested soils, which indicate that anthropogenic activities have significantly affected soil PTE contents to a greater extent than other sources. Industrial discharge was the most prominent source of non-carcinogenic health risk, contributing 37.7% for adults and 35.2% for children of the total risk. The results of PLS-PM revealed that land use change associated with intensive human activities such as industrial activities and agricultural practices distinctly affected the PTE contents in soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

This study investigated the distribution of moss species, physiological parameters (superoxide dismutase, peroxide, catalase, and total chlorophyll), and concentrations of potentially toxic elements (Mn, Cr, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) in moss communities and topsoil at the Huayuan manganese mine, Xiangjiang manganese mine, and Nancha manganese mine (Southern China). Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was then performed to determine the relationship between the indicators. Cd, Mn, and Zn were the main topsoil pollutants, followed by Pb, Cr, and Cu. A total of 73 moss species, comprising 31 genera from 17 families, and 8 community functional groups were identified. The most dominant families were Pottiaceae (30.14%) and Bryaceae (21.92%). PLS-PM revealed that increasing topsoil Mn, Cr, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd significantly reduced species diversity and functional diversity. These potentially toxic elements in the topsoil impeded vegetation growth by deteriorating soil conditions and subsequently altering the microenvironment of the moss communities. The community-weighted means demonstrated that functional traits of turfs and warty leaves were the adaptation of the moss communities to an increasingly dry and exposed microenvironment. Moss species with curly and narrow leaves were used to reduce contact with particulate pollutants. PLS-PM also indicated that Mn, Cr, Pb, and Cd may have a detrimental effect on superoxide dismutase, peroxide, catalase, and total chlorophyll, although further validation studies are needed.

In recent years, the naturally high background value region of Cd derived from the weathering of carbonate has received wide attention. Due to the significant difference in soil Cd content and bioavailability among different parent materials, the previous land classification scheme based on total soil Cd content as the classification standard, has certain shortcomings. This study aims to explore the factors influencing soil Cd bioavailability in typical karst areas of Guilin and to suggest a scientific and effective farmland use management plan based on the prediction model. A total of 9393 and 8883 topsoil samples were collected from karst and non-karst areas, respectively. Meanwhile, 149 and 145 rice samples were collected together with rhizosphere soil in karst and non-karst areas, respectively. The results showed that the higher CaO level in the karst area was a key factor leading to elevated soil pH value. Although Cd was highly enriched in karst soils, the higher pH value and adsorption of Mn oxidation inhibited Cd mobility in soils. Conversely, the Cd content in non-karst soils was lower, whereas the Cd level in rice grains was higher. To select the optimal prediction model based on the correlation between Cd bioaccumulation factors and geochemical parameters of soil, artificial neural network (ANN) and linear regression prediction models were established in this study. The ANN prediction model was more accurate than the traditional linear regression model according to the evaluation parameters of the test set. Furthermore, a new land classification scheme based on an ANN prediction model and soil Cd concentration is proposed in this study, making full use of the spatial resources of farmland to ensure safe rice consumption.

Land-use types may affect soil aggregates' stability and organic carbon (OC) distribution characteristics, but little is known about the effects on the distribution characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in the aggregates. Hence, the MPs abundance of soil aggregates and analyzed aggregates’ stability, composition, and OC content from two soil layers of four land-use types in Gansu Province were investigated in this study. The total MPs abundances in woodland, farmland (wheat, maize, and potato), orchard, and intercropping (potato + apple orchard) of top and deep soils were 1383.3 and 1477.9, 1324.6 and 931.1, 1757.1 and 1930.9, 2127.2 and 1998.0, 1335.9 and 886.7, and 1777.5 and 1683.3 items kg⁻¹, respectively. The largest MPs abundance was detected in the >5 mm fractions of topsoil in potato (3077.3 items kg⁻¹), followed by maize (3044.7 items kg⁻¹) and intercropping (2718.4 items kg⁻¹). In the topsoil, the total MPs abundance increased significantly with decreasing aggregate stability, and also was positively correlated with bulk density, microbial biomass, and total nitrogen contents of bulk soil. Summarizing, the abundance distribution of MPs correlates with the soil aggregate characteristics of the different land-use types.

Passive biomonitoring was applied in four Atlantic forest plots in southeast Brazil, affected by different levels of trace metal pollution (OP site located in Minas Gerais State and PEFI, PP and STG located in São Paulo State). Native tree species were selected as biomonitors according to their abundance in each plot and successional classification. Current trace metal concentrations in total suspended particles, leaves of non-pioneer (NPi) and pioneer (Pi) species, topsoil (0–20 cm) and litter and concentration ratios at the plant/soil interface were analyzed to verify the atmosphere-plant-soil interactions, basal concentrations, spatial variations and metal accumulation at the ecosystem level. Redundant analysis helped to identify similar characteristics of metal concentrations in PP and PEFI, which can be influenced by the high concentrations of elements related to anthropogenic inputs. Analysis of variance and multivariate statistics indicated that the trees of OP presented higher concentrations of Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni than those in the other sites. High enrichment of Cd, Fe, Ni in non-pioneer plants indicated that the PP forest (initially considered as the least polluted) has still been affected by metal pollution. Soil collected in STG was enriched by all elements, however these elements were low available for plant uptake. Metal deposited in leaves and litter was an important sink for soil cycling, nevertheless, these metals are not bioavailable in most cases. Non-pioneer tree species revealed to be more appropriate than pioneer species to indicate the current panorama of the contamination and bioavailability levels of trace metals in the tree community-litter-soil interface of the Atlantic forest remnants included in this study.

The presence of phenols, such as nonylphenol (NP), bisphenol (BPA), and octylphenol (OP), in the environment have been receiving increased attention due to their potential risks to human health and environment. The use of reclaimed water for irrigation may be one of the sources of these phenols in the agricultural system. A field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on phenol contamination of agricultural topsoil and products in the North China Plain between 2015 and 2016. Three irrigation treatments were applied to all crops: reclaimed water irrigation, groundwater irrigation and alternative irrigation with reclaimed water and groundwater (1:1, v/v). The results showed that the concentrations of NP, BPA, and OP in the topsoil were 0.02–0.54, 0.004–0.06, and ND–9.9 × 10⁻³ mg/kg, respectively; the corresponding values in agricultural products were 0.007–0.70, 0.004–0.24, and ND–1.08 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of NP in the topsoil and agricultural products and that of BPA in the agricultural products were all less than the recommended limits. The yields of wheat, maize, vegetables were 4.35–7.08, 1.03–6.46, and 10.9–67.0 t/ha, respectively. The bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) of OP, NP, and BPA for cereals were 0.7–4.77, 0.16–4.59, and 1.3–23.9, respectively; the corresponding values in vegetables were 0.0–4.53 (except cucumber and eggplant), 0.38–12.6, and 0.57–24.3, respectively. No significant differences in phenol concentrations, BCFs, or yields of wheat and vegetables were observed among the three irrigation treatments. In conclusion, compared with groundwater irrigation, reclaimed water irrigation in this experiment did not significantly affect phenol concentrations in the topsoil and agricultural products as well as BCFs and yields of wheat and vegetables. However, because the quality of reclaimed water may vary across collected areas, additional experiments are warranted to analyze the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on the risk of phenol contamination.

Soil magnetic susceptibility (MS) is an important parameter in pollution studies owing to its relationship with atmospheric deposition, and the concomitance of technogenic magnetic particles (TMPs) with potentially toxic elements (PTEs), Fe and Mn. In this study, we performed a detailed soil study under tree canopies for a forest area with high historical TMP-bearing industrial dust deposition. The technogenic sources of magnetic signals in topsoil were analyzed via scanning electron microscope electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), while the minor role of geogenic sources was obtained from soil profile analysis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to show soil TMP distribution in three dimensional (3D) space. In addition, using the data from 275 soil cores and 8250 individual measurements, 3D maps of MS for four tree species were plotted. There is a noticeable difference between coniferous (spruce and pine) and deciduous (beech and oak) species regarding depth of maximum concentration of magnetic particles in the topsoil. For beech and oak, maximum MS values were measured at 3 cm depth; pine and spruce, maximum MS values were measured at 5 cm depth. However, no significant differences were found among tree species in terms of mean MS or PTE contents. This suggests that there is little different among tree species in terms of dust capture over their life span. Significant correlations between MS and other parameters (PTEs and organic matter contents) present new possibilities for spatial 3D analysis of topsoil horizons.

Nitrogen is the main nutrient in soil. The long-term addition of N leads to changes in the soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) and other quality indicators, which affects the adsorption and accumulation of organic pollutants. The use of organic fertilizer is important for the development of green agriculture. However, organic fertilizers (especially sludge organic fertilizers (SOFs) contain phthalates (PAEs) that may accumulate in the soil and result in environmental contamination. How this accumulation response varies with the magnitude of long-term N addition, especially in different soil layer profiles, remains unclear. Here, changes in the content of PAEs in the soil–plant system without and after SOFs application were studied through field experiments in soils with different N addition backgrounds (CK, N1, N3 (0, 100, 300 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ respectively)). Our results showed that the application of SOFs increase the accumulation of PAEs in soil profiles and plant systems, increasing human health risks. The content of Σ₅PAEs in the topsoil increased from 0.96 ± 0.10 to 1.86 ± 0.09 mg kg⁻¹. Moreover, under a high N addition background and SOFs application, the characteristics of soil DOM change, and the accumulation of PAEs in soil was nearly 30% higher compared with the low N group. Some suggestions such as removing PAEs from SOFs during preparation, conducting soil surveys before applying PAEs, and using soil amendments, which are provided for optimizing the trialability and environmental safety of SOFs application.

An increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution poses significant challenges to human and ecosystem health in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) of the Yangtze River. Based on the combination of PAH analysis with qPCR and high-throughput sequencing of bacteria, 32 topsoil samples collected from 16 sites along the TGR were used to investigate the distribution and biodegradation pathways of PAHs in the water-level-fluctuation zone (WLFZ). The results indicated that the concentrations of PAHs were 43.8–228.2 and 30.8–206.3 ng/g soil (dry weight) under the high- and low-water-level (HWL and LWL) conditions, respectively. The PAH concentration in urban areas was higher than that in rural areas. Under both the HWL and LWL conditions, the abundance of the bamA gene, a biomarker of anaerobic PAH biodegradation, was significantly higher than that of the ring-hydroxylating-dioxygenase (RHD) gene, a biomarker of aerobic PAH biodegradation. The abundance of the bamA gene was significantly positively correlated with PAHs (R² = 0.8), and the biodegradation percentage of PAHs incubated anaerobically was greater than that in the aerobically incubated microcosm experiments. These data implicated a key role of the anaerobic pathway in PAH biodegradation. Co-occurrence network analysis suggested that anaerobic Anaerolineaceae, Dechloromonas, Bacteroidetes_vadin HA17 and Geobacter were key participants in the biodegradation of PAHs. The diversity analysis of functional bacteria based on the bamA gene and microcosm experiments further demonstrated that nitrate was the primary electron acceptor for PAH biodegradation. These findings provide a new perspective on the mechanism of PAH biodegradation in the TGR and knowledge that can be used to develop strategies for environmental management.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil and crops caused by mining activities has become a prevalent concern in the world. Given that different crops have varying Cd bioaccumulation factors, crops with low Cd bioaccumulation abilities can be selected for the safe usage of Cd -contaminated lands. This study aimed to investigate Cd contamination in soil and crops and the influencing factors of soil Cd activity in a tin mining area (TMA) and control area (CA) and to put forward suggestions for the safe usage of farmlands by developing prediction models of Cd content in different crop grains. We collected 72 and 40 pairs of rice and maize grain samples, respectively, along with their rhizosphere soil samples and 6176 topsoil samples. The results showed that compared with the CA, the Cd pollution was more severe in the cultivated soil and crop grains around TMA. Furthermore, rice has a strong ability to transport Cd from soil to grains, whereas maize has a poor Cd uptake ability. The total organic carbon, CaO, pH, and Mn in soil play key roles in the transfer of Cd from soil to crop grains. Using these parameters and Cd concentration in soil, two sets of accurate Cd prediction models were developed for maize and rice. Based on the Cd concentration in the topsoil and predicted Cd concentration in crop grains, the safe utilization scheme of farmland was proposed. The proportions of priority protection, safe exploitation, planting adjustment, and strict control were 72.59%, 22.77%, 3.16%, and 1.48% in the TMA, respectively. The values reached 80.51% (priority protection), 19.12% (safe exploitation), 0.37% (planting adjustment), and 0% (strict control) in the CA. Thus, given the difference between Cd accumulation in rice and maize, adjustment of planting crops in contaminated farmlands can be applied to maximize the use of farmland resources.
