International audience | Temperature is a key factor that influences pesticide degradation. Extrapolating degradation half-lives (DT50) measured at a given temperature to different temperatures remains challenging, especially for tropical conditions with high temperatures. In this study, the use of the standard Arrhenius equation for correcting temperature effects on pesticide degradation in soils was evaluated and its performance was compared with that of alternative Arrhenius-based equations. To do so, a database of 509 DT50 values measured between 5 and 35 °C for 32 pesticides on tropical and temperate soils was compiled for the first time through an extensive literature search. The temperature correction models were fitted to the database using linear mixed regression approaches that included soil type and compound effects. No difference in the temperature dependence of DT50 between tropical and temperate soils was detected, regardless of the model. A comparison of the prediction performances of the models showed that constant activation energy (Ea) cannot be considered valid for the whole range of temperatures. The classical Arrhenius equation with an Ea of 65.4 kJ.mol−1, as recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), was shown to be valid for correcting the DT50 only for temperatures ranging from 5 to 20 °C. However, for temperatures greater than 20 °C, which are common in tropical environments, the median Ea was significantly lower at 10.3 kJ.mol−1. These findings suggest the need to adapt the standard temperature correction of the European pesticide risk assessment temperature procedure when it is applied in tropical settings

Biochar has been proven as a soil amendment to improve soil environment. However, mechanistic understanding of biochar on soil physical properties and microbial community remains unclear. In this study, a wood biochar (WB), was incorporated into a highly weathered tropical soil, and after 1 year the in situ changes in soil properties and microbial community were evaluated. A field trial was conducted for application of compost, wood biochar, and polyacrylamide. Microstructure and morphological features of the soils were characterized through 3D X-ray microscopy and polarized microscopy. Soil microbial communities were identified through next-generation sequencing (NGS). After incubation, the number of pores and connection throats between the pores of biochar treated soil increased by 3.8 and 7.2 times, respectively, compared to the control. According to NGS results, most sequences belonged to Anaerolinea thermolimosa, Caldithrix palaeochoryensis, Chthoniobacter flavus, and Cohnella soli. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) further demonstrated that the microbial community structure was determined by inorganic N (IN), available P (AP), pH, soil organic C (SOC), porosity, bulk density (BD), and aggregate stability. The treatments with co-application of biochar and compost facilitated the dominance of Cal. palaeochoryensis, Cht. flavus, and Coh. soli, all of which promoted organic matter decomposition and ammonia oxidation in the soil. The apparent increases in IN, AP, porosity, and SOC caused by the addition of biochar and compost may be the proponents of changes in soil microbial communities. The co-application of compost and biochar may be a suitable strategy for real world biochar incorporation in highly weathered soil.

The sorption behaviour of three perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), namely perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), was determined on 28 tropical soils. Tropical soils are often highly weathered, richer in sesquioxides than temperate soils and may contain variable charge minerals. There are little data on sorption of PFASs in tropical soils. The highest Kd values were found for PFOS with mean values ranging from 0 to 31.6 L/kg. The Kd values for PFOA and PFHxS ranged from 0 to 4.9 L/kg and from 0 to 5.6 L/kg, respectively. While these values are in the range of literature sorption data, the average Kd values for PFOS and PFOA from the literature were 3.7 times and 3.6 times higher, respectively, than those measured in this study. Stepwise regression analysis did explain some of the variance, but with different explanatory variables for the different PFASs. The main soil properties explaining sorption for PFOS and PFOA were oxalate-extractable Al and pH, and for PFHxS was pH.

A tropical soil Actinomycete, Gordonia amicalis HS-11, has been previously demonstrated to degrade unsaturated and saturated hydrocarbons (squalene and n-hexadecane, respectively) in an effective manner. In present study, G. amicalis HS-11 degraded 92.85 ± 3.42% of the provided diesel oil [1% (v/v)] after 16 days of aerobic incubation. The effect of different culture conditions such as carbon source, nitrogen source, pH, temperature, and aeration on degradation was studied. During degradation, this Actinomycete synthesized surface active compounds (SACs) in an extracellular manner that brought about a reduction in surface tension from 69 ± 2.1 to 30 ± 1.1 mN m⁻¹ after 16 days. The morphology of cells grown on diesel was monitored by using a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope. Diesel-grown cells were longer and clumped with smooth surfaces, possibly due to the secretion of SACs. The interaction between the cells and diesel oil was studied by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. Some cells were adherent on small diesel droplets and others were present in the non-attached form thus confirming the emulsification ability of this organism. The fatty acid profiles of the organism grown on diesel oil for 48 h were different from those on Luria Bertani Broth. The genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of diesel oil before and after degradation were determined. Cytogenetic parameters such as mitotic index (MI); mitosis distribution and chromosomal aberration (type and frequency) were assessed. Oxidative stress was evaluated by measuring levels of catalase, superoxide dismutase and concentration of malondialdehyde. On the basis of these studies it was deduced that the degradation metabolites were relatively non-toxic.

Plant Protection Products can affect soil organisms and thus might have negative impacts on soil functions. Little research has been performed on their impact on tropical soils. Therefore, the effects of the insecticide lambda-Cyhalothrin on earthworms were evaluated in acute and chronic laboratory tests modified for tropical conditions, i.e. at selected temperatures (20 and 28°C) and with two strains (temperate and tropical) of the compost worm Eisenia fetida. The insecticide was spiked in two natural soils, in OECD artificial soil and a newly developed tropical artificial soil. The effects of lambda-Cyhalothrin did rarely vary in the same soil at tropical (LC50: 68.5–229mg a.i./kg dry weight (DW); EC50: 54.2–60.2mg a.i./kg DW) and temperate (LC50: 99.8–140mg a.i./kg DW; EC50: 37.4–44.5mg a.i./kg DW) temperatures. In tests with tropical soils and high temperature, effect values differed by up to a factor of ten.

Chlordecone was applied between 1972 and 1993 in banana fields of the French West Indies. This resulted in long-term pollution of soils and contamination of waters, aquatic biota, and crops. To assess pollution level and duration according to soil type, WISORCH, a leaching model based on first-order desorption kinetics, was developed and run. Its input parameters are soil organic carbon content (SOC) and SOC/water partitioning coefficient (Koc). It accounts for current chlordecone soil contents and drainage water concentrations. The model was valid for andosol, which indicates that neither physico-chemical nor microbial degradation occurred. Dilution by previous deep tillages makes soil scrapping unrealistic. Lixiviation appeared the main way to reduce pollution. Besides the SOC and rainfall increases, Koc increased from nitisol to ferralsol and then andosol while lixiviation efficiency decreased. Consequently, pollution is bound to last for several decades for nitisol, centuries for ferralsol, and half a millennium for andosol. Soil and water contamination by chlordecone will persist for several centuries in the French West Indies, because the only decontamination is through leaching by drainage water.

The oxidative dissolution of mine wastes gives rise to acidic, metal-enriched mine drainage (AMD) and has typically posed an additional risk to the environment. The poly-metallic mine Dabaoshan in South China is an excellent test site to understand the processes affecting the surrounding polluted agricultural fields. Our objectives were firstly to investigate metal ion activity in soil solution, distribution in solid constituents, and spatial distribution in samples, secondly to determine dominant environment factors controlling metal activity in the long-term AMD-polluted subtropical soils. Soil Column Donnan Membrane Technology (SC-DMT) combined with sequential extraction shows that unusually large proportion of the metal ions are present as free ion in the soil solutions. The narrow range of low pH values prevents any pH effects during the binding onto oxides or organic matter. The differences in speciation of the soil solutions may explain the different soil degradation observed between paddy and non-paddy soils. First evidence of the real free metal ion concentrations in acid mine drainage context in tropical systems.

Rare earth elements have been increasingly used in modern societies and soils are likely to be the final destination of several REE-containing (by)products. This study reports REE contents for topsoils (0–20 cm) of 175 locations in reference (n = 68) and cultivated (n = 107) areas in Brazil. Benchmark soil samples were selected accomplishing a variety of environmental conditions, aiming to: i) establishing natural background and anthropogenic concentrations for REE in soils; ii) assessing potential contamination of soils - via application of phosphate fertilizers - with REE; and, iii) predicting soil-REE contents using biomes, soil type, parent material, land use, sand content, and biomes-land use interaction as forecaster variables through generalized least squares multiple regression. Our hypotheses were that the variability of soil-REE contents is influenced by parent material, pedogenic processes, land use, and biomes, as well as that cultivated soils may have been potentially contaminated with REE via input of phosphate fertilizers. The semi-total concentrations of REE were assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) succeeding a microwave-assisted aqua regia digestion. Analytical procedures followed a rigorous QA/QC protocol. Soil physicochemical composition and total oxides were also determined. Natural background and anthropogenic concentrations for REE were established statistically from the dataset by the median plus two median absolute deviations method. Contamination aspects were assessed by REE-normalized patterns, REE fractionation indices, and Ce and Eu anomalies ratios, as well as enrichment factors. The results indicate that differences in the amounts of REE in cultivated soils can be attributed to land use and agricultural sources (e.g., phosphate-fertilizer inputs), while those in reference soils can be attributed to parent materials, biomes, and pedogenic processes. The biomes, land use, and sand content helped to predict concentrations of light REE in Brazilian soils, with parent material being also of special relevance to predict heavy REE contents in particular.

Polyethylene film is one of the most common types of recalcitrant plastic waste materials. Information regarding the fate of plastic films in soil is scarce compared to the fate of plastic films in aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil fauna and of impregnation of polyethylene films with oil on the colonization of low-density polyethylene films by prokaryotic communities. The field experiment was performed in a monsoon tropical forest (Vietnam). Polyethylene films were incubated in thermally pre-defaunated soil isolated from the surrounding soil by a stainless steel mesh. Three mesh sizes were used, allowing access to different size groups of soil fauna. The diversity, taxonomic structure and co-occurrence patterns in prokaryotic communities were studied using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene libraries. The prokaryotic communities that formed on polyethylene films were slightly different from those inhabiting the surrounding soil. Contrary to our expectations, no difference in the diversity of prokaryotes was observed between microcosms with different mesh sizes. Oil impregnation also had only a minor influence on the prokaryotic community structure. Polyethylene films incubated in microcosms with soil appeared to be colonized by various consortia of prokaryotes as a barren and inert surface.

Glyphosate is one of the most used herbicides in the world. The fate of glyphosate in tropical soils may be different from that in soils from temperate regions. In particular, the amounts and types of non-extractable residues (NER) may differ considerably, resulting in different relative contributions of xenoNER (sorbed and sequestered parent compound) and bioNER (biomass residues of degraders). In addition, environmental conditions and agricultural practices leading to total organic carbon (TOC) or pH variation can alter the degradation of glyphosate. The aim of this study is thus to investigate how the glyphosate degradation and turnover are influenced by varying temperature, pH and TOC of sandy loam soil from Colombia. The pH or TOC of a Colombian soil was modified to yield five treatments: control (pH 7.0, TOC 3%), 4% TOC, 5% TOC, pH 6.5, and pH 5.5. Each treatment received 50 mg kg⁻¹ of ¹³C₃¹⁵N-glyphosate and was incubated at 10 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C for 40 days. Rising temperature increased the mineralization of ¹³C₃¹⁵N-glyphosate from 13 to 20% (10 °C) to 32–39% (20 °C) and 41–51% (30 °C) and decreased the amounts of extractable ¹³C₃¹⁵N-glyphosate after 40 days of incubation from 13 to 26% (10 °C) to 4.6–12% (20 °C) and 1.2–3.2% (30 °C). Extractable ¹³C₃¹⁵N-glyphosate increased with higher TOC and higher pH. Total ¹³C-NER were similar in all treatments and at all temperatures (47%–60%), indicating that none of the factors studied affected the amount of total ¹³C-NER. However, ¹³C-bioNER dominated within the ¹³C-NER pool in the control and the 4% TOC treatment (76–88% of total ¹³C-NER at 20 °C and 30 °C), whereas in soil with 5% TOC and pH 6.5 or 5.5 ¹³C-bioNER were lower (47–61% at 20 °C and 30 °C). In contrast, the ¹⁵N-bioNER pool was small (between 14 and 39% of the ¹⁵N-NER). Thus, more than 60% of ¹⁵N-NER is potentially hazardous xenobiotic NER which need careful attention in the future.
