Ground-level ozone (O₃) has become the principal air pollutant in Beijing during recent summers. In this context, an investigation of ambient concentrations and variation characteristics of O₃ and its precursors in May and June from 2014 to 2017 in a typical urban area of Beijing was carried out, and the formation sensitivity and different causes of heavy O₃ pollution (HOP, daily maximum 8-h O₃ (MDA8h O₃)>124 ppbv) were analyzed. The results showed that the monthly assessment values of the O₃ concentrations (the 90ᵗʰ percentile MDA8h O₃ within one month) were highest in May or June from 2014 to 2017, and the values presented an overall increasing trend. During this period, the number of O₃ pollution days (MDA8h O₃ > 75 ppbv) also showed an increasing trend. During the HOP episodes, the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOX), and carbon monoxide (CO) were higher than their respective mean values in May and June, and the meteorological conditions were more conducive to atmospheric photochemical reactions. The HOP episodes were mainly caused by local photochemical formation. From 2014 to 2017, O₃ formation during the HOP episodes shifted from VOC and NOX mixed-limited to VOC-limited conditions, and O₃ formation was most sensitive to anthropogenic VOCs. Six categories of VOC sources were identified, among which vehicular exhaust contributed the most to anthropogenic VOCs. The VOC concentrations and OFPs of anthropogenic sources have decreased significantly in recent years, indicating that VOC control measures have been effective in Beijing. Nevertheless, NOX concentrations did not show an evident decreasing trend in the same period. Therefore, more attention should be devoted to O₃ pollution control in May and June; control measure adjustments are needed according to the changes in O₃ precursors, and coordinated control of VOCs and NOX should be strengthened in long-term planning.

Aquatic pollution from emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) is of key environmental importance in India and globally, particularly due to concerns of antimicrobial resistance, ecotoxicity and drinking water supply vulnerability. Here, using a broad screening approach, we characterize the composition and distribution of EOCs in groundwater in the Gangetic Plain around Patna (Bihar), as an exemplar of a rapidly developing urban area in northern India. A total of 73 EOCs were detected in 51 samples, typically at ng.L⁻¹ to low μg.L⁻¹ concentrations, relating to medical and veterinary, agrochemical, industrial and lifestyle usage. Concentrations were often dominated by the lifestyle chemical and artificial sweetener sucralose. Seventeen identified EOCs are flagged as priority compounds by the European Commission, World Health Organisation and/or World Organisation for Animal Health: namely, herbicides diuron and atrazine; insecticides imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and acetamiprid; the surfactant perfluorooctane sulfonate (and related perfluorobutane sulfonate, perfluorohexane sulfonate, perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluoropentane sulfonate); and medical/veterinary compounds sulfamethoxazole, sulfanilamide, dapson, sulfathiazole, sulfamethazine and diclofenac. The spatial distribution of EOCs varies widely, with concentrations declining with depth, consistent with a strong dominant vertical flow control. Groundwater EOC concentrations in Patna were found to peak within ∼10 km distance from the River Ganges, indicating mainly urban inputs with some local pollution hotspots. A heterogeneous relationship between EOCs and population density likely reflects confounding factors including varying input types and controls (e.g. spatial, temporal), wastewater treatment infrastructure and groundwater abstraction. Strong seasonal agreement in EOC concentrations was observed. Co-existence of limited transformation products with associated parent compounds indicate active microbial degradation processes. This study characterizes key controls on the distribution of groundwater EOCs across the urban to rural transition near Patna, as a rapidly developing Indian city, and contributes to the wider understanding of the vulnerability of shallow groundwater to surface-derived contamination in similar environments.

An industrial warehouse illegally storing a large quantity of unknown chemical and industrial waste ignited in an urban area in Melbourne, Australia. The multiday fire required firefighters to use large amounts of fluorine-free foam that carried contaminated firewater runoff into an adjacent freshwater creek. In this study, the occurrence and fate of 42 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) was determined from triplicate surface water samples (n = 45) from five locations (upstream, point-source, downstream; 8 km) over three sampling campaigns from 2018 to 2020. Out of the 42 target PFASs, perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs: C4–C14), perfluoroalkane sulfonates (PFSAs: C4–C10), and perfluoroalkyl acid precursors (e.g. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTSA)) were ubiquitously detected in surface waters (concentration ranges: <0.7–3000 ng/L). A significant difference in ΣPFAS concentration was observed at the point-source (mean 5500 ng/L; 95% CI: 4800, 6300) relative to upstream sites (mean 100 ng/L; 95% CI: 90, 110; p ≤ 0.001). The point-source ΣPFAS concentration decreased from 5500 ± 1200 ng/L to 960 ± 42 ng/L (−83%) after two months and to 430 ± 15 ng/L (−98%) two years later. 6:2 FTSA and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) dominated in surface water, representing on average 31% and 20% of the ΣPFAS, respectively. Emerging PFASs including a cyclic perfluoroalkanesulfonate (PFECHS) and a C4 perfluoroalkane sulfonamide (FBSA) were repeatedly present in surface water (concentration ranges <0.3–77 ng/L). According to the updated Australian PFAS guidelines for ecological conservation, the water samples collected at the time of monitoring may have posed a short-term risk to aquatic organisms in regard to PFOS levels. These results illustrate that acute high dose exposure to PFASs can result from industrial fires at sites storing or stockpiling PFAS-based waste products. Continued monitoring will be crucial to evaluate potential long-term risk to wildlife in the region.

Organic and inorganic pollutants are often co-sedimentary in soils and have the same sources in the urban environment. The identification of the sources and distribution of combined pollutants is a basic step in risk management. In this study, the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) were measured in urban park soils in Beijing. Bivariate local Moran’s I and positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment were used to identify the spatial clustering patterns and potential sources of PAHs and HMs, as well as to ultimately define a pollution risk control area. The results revealed an obvious clustered distribution of PAHs and HMs in the park soils. High-high areas were defined as sites containing a complex mixture of pollutants, which were mainly located in the center and north of Beijing. High-low and low-high areas were located outside the city center but had the potential for combined pollution, and therefore require continuous attention. Bivariate local indicators of spatial association (LISA) enabled a more accurate analyses of the mechanism controlling the spatial distribution of PAH and HM combinations in urban parks. The source apportionment indicated that industrial and traffic emissions were the most important sources of the pollutant combinations in urban parks, with traffic emissions accounting for most of the pollution.

Soil contamination in urban environment by trace metals is of public concerns. For better risk assessment, it is important to determine their background concentrations in urban soils. For this study, we determined the background concentrations of 9 trace metals including As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn in 214 urban soils in Florida from two large cities (Orlando and Tampa) and 4 small cities (Clay County, Ocala, Pensacola and West Palm Beach). The objectives were to determine: 1) total concentrations of trace metals in urban soils in cities of different size; 2) compare background concentrations to Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs); and 3) determine their distribution and variability in urban soils via multivariate statistical analysis. Elemental concentrations in urban soils were variable, with Pb being the highest in 5 cities (165–552 mg kg⁻¹) and Zn being the highest concentration in Tampa (1,000 mg kg⁻¹). Besides, the As and Pb concentrations in some soils exceeded the FSCTL for residential sites at 2.1 mg kg⁻¹ As and 400 mg kg⁻¹ Pb. Among the cities, Clay County and Orlando had the lowest concentrations for most elements, with Cd, Co, and As being the lowest while Ba, Pb and Zn being the highest. Among all values, geometric means were the lowest while 95th percentile was the highest for all metals. Most 95th percentile values were 2–3 folds higher than the GM data, with Pb presenting the greatest difference, being 4 times greater than GM value (58.9 vs. 13.6 mg kg⁻¹). Still they were lower than FSCTL, with As exceeding FSCTL for residential sites at 2.1 mg kg⁻¹. In addition, the linear discriminate analysis showed distinct separation among the cities: Ocala (Ba & Ni) and Pensacola (As & Pb) were distinctly different from each other and from other cities with higher metal concentrations. The large variations among elemental concentrations showed the importance to establish proper background concentrations of trace metals in urban soils.

Potential toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) in road dust are a major concern in relation to urban environmental quality. Identifying pollution hotspots and sources of PTMs is an essential prerequisite for pollution control and management. Herein, the concentrations, pollution and potential health risks of 8 PTMs (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mo, Pb and Zn) in road dust from the highly urbanized areas of Nanjing were studied. Spatial occurrences and sources of PTMs were explored using geostatistics, principal component analysis (PCA) and local Moran’s index. The contamination factor (CF) results showed that Co was mainly natural in origin, while the other PTMs were polluted, with average CFs ranging from 1.4 to 11.0 as follows: Hg > Mo > Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > As, indicating moderate to very high contamination. Except for Co and Hg, the other PTMs were heavily loaded on PC1, which explained 44.72% of the total variance. Combining the statistical results and distributions of potential sources, we deduced that industrial emissions dominated the spatial patterns of all polluted PTMs in road dust, which showed high levels in the northern parts of the study region and generally decreasing levels southwards. Moreover, Pb and Zn in the south-central area and Cd in the north-central area displayed hotspots, with maximum CFs of 5.5 (Pb), 4.2 (Zn) and 16.2 (Cd), which were related to additional automotive and railway braking emissions, respectively. The resuspension of legacy pesticides in soil is likely responsible for the As pollution hotspot in the southwestern part. Despite the high anthropogenic contributions (27% for As and 68–88% for the other metals) to the PTMs in road dust, their noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks were rarely found for children and adults based on the values of the hazard index and carcinogenic risk index. However, attention still should be paid to the pollution hotspots in the northern region.

Atmospheric levels of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) at five remote, six rural and four urban sites in Australia were measured using XAD-2 passive air samplers (XAD-PAS). While long-chain CP (LCCP, C>₁₇) levels were below method detection limits (MDLs), short-chain CPs (SCCPs, C₁₀₋₁₃) and, for the first time, medium-chain CPs (MCCPs, C₁₄₋₁₇) and CPs with a carbon chain length of nine (CP–C9) were found at many sites (88%, 81% and 88%, respectively) across the Australian continent, representing a range of environmental conditions. Applying preliminary sampling rates of the XAD-PAS for CPs, gaseous CP levels in Australian air were <MDL-1.3 and <MDL-1.8 ng/m³ for ΣSCCPs and ΣMCCPs, respectively, with a significant decreasing trend from more densely to less densely populated areas. Atmospheric median levels in this study (0.37 and 0.47 ng/m³ for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) were at the lower end of the median range (0.32–10 and 3.0–4.2 ng/m³ for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) reported for CPs at predominantly urban or industrial sites elsewhere (apart from China and extremely remote sites such as Antarctica). Principal component analysis matched the SCCP and MCCP congener group patterns in samples with those found in commercial mixtures, indicating a prevalence of less chlorinated congener groups in the Australian atmosphere. Information about the Australian production, use and disposal of CPs as well as their levels in other environmental matrices, including humans, is needed for assessing their emissions, behaviour, fate and potential exposure.

Increasing indirect nitrous oxide (N₂O) emission from river networks as a result of enhanced human activities on landscapes has become a global issue, as N₂O has been widely recognized as an important ozone-depleting greenhouse gas. However, indirect N₂O emissions from different rivers, particularly for those that drain completely different landscapes, are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the spatial-temporal variability of N₂O emissions among the different rivers in the Chaohu Lake Basin of Eastern China. Our results showed that river reaches in urban watersheds are the hotspots of N₂O production, with a mean N₂O concentration of ∼410 nmol L⁻¹, which is 9–18 times greater than those mainly draining forested (23 nmol L⁻¹), agricultural (42 nmol L⁻¹) and mixed (45 nmol L⁻¹) landscapes. Riverine dissolved N₂O was generally supersaturated with respect to the atmosphere. Such N₂O saturation can best be explained by nitrogen availability, except for those in the forested watersheds, where dissolved oxygen is thought to be the primary predictor. The estimated N₂O fluxes in urban rivers reached ∼471 μmol m⁻² d⁻¹, a value of ∼22, 13, and 11 times that in forested, agricultural and mixed watersheds, respectively. Averaged riverine N₂O emission factors (EF₅ᵣ) of the forested, agricultural, urban and mixed watersheds were 0.066%, 0.12%, 0.95% and 0.16%, respectively, showing different deviations from the default EF₅ᵣ that released by IPCC in 2019. This points to a need for more field measurements with wider spatial coverage and finer frequency to further refine the EF₅ᵣ and to better reveal the mechanisms behind indirect N₂O emissions as influenced by watershed landscapes.

Lead (Pb) is an important pollutant and it is of significance to explore the Pb distribution, influencing factors and health risk. Pb concentration and mass load per unit area in 385 street dust samples collected from 19 cities in China were determined during 2011-2013. The results show that the Pb concentration are 68.8, 105.4, 41.7, 49.7, 75.6, 81.7, 131.9, 67.5, 109.3, 164.1, 74.8, 66.4, 99.8, 58.4, 114.0, 59.6, 103.7, 55.4 and 80.4 for Beijing, Chengdu, Daqing, Harbin, Jilin, Jinan, Kunming, Lanzhou, Luoyang, Panzhihua, Qingdao, Yinchuan, Guangzhou, Tangshan, Xi’an, Guangyuan, Nanjing, Taiyuan and Tianjin, respectively. The Pb pollution level of urban street dust varies among cities in the range of 1.72–5.56 times higher than soil background values. The allometric function can fit the change in Pb concentration with particle size well. The medium-sized (38–120 μm) particles contributed 60.2%–80.4% to the Pb load and should be highlighted when selecting street dust management techniques. Influenced by the distribution of Pb ore, the Pb concentration of urban street dust in China shows obvious regional differences, with value in the south 112% higher than that in the north. Among all kinds of mining types, metal-related mining activities discharge a large amount of Pb dust in the process of crushing and smelting, thus contributing most to the Pb load. The Pb load was also affected by transportation. The relationship between Pb load and gross domestic product (GDP) was described with the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model, which indicated that the Pb emissions of most cities were still increasing. Finally, the human health risk assessment model with adjusted parameters showed that the Pb risk of all cities was below the threshold. Despite all this, given the EKC law of Pb emission, long-term follow-up assessments are needed.

Land use/Land cover (LULC) associated with Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp. quantification and distribution can provide identification of the environmental circulation patterns of these parasites. The aim of this research was to relate the occurrence and circulation of these parasites to the LULC watershed with poor sanitation infrastructure and livestock as important economic activity. The study involved 11 municipalities in the state of São Paulo, located in southeastern Brazil. Sampling was carried out at the catchment sites of each water supply on a monthly basis, starting in December 2014 and lasting until November 2015, totalizing 128 samples. Protozoans were quantified according to the 1623.1 US. EPA Method. For watershed delimitation, the hydrographic network was extracted from the hydrology tool of ArcGIS 10.1. The frequency of occurrence of these pathogens and the high concentrations were evidenced in the municipality with the largest urban area (16.2%) and intense livestock activity (39%) near the catchment site. The municipality that showed the lowest frequency of occurrence presented the smallest urban area (0.87%) and absence of livestock activity near the catchment site. The high concentration of pathogens suggests a correlation between the impact on water supply networks and river basin degradation caused by urban activity and livestock.
