Passive sampling of selected endocrine disrupting compounds using polar organic chemical integrative samplers
2008
Arditsoglou, Anastasia | Voutsa, Dimitra
Two types of polar organic chemical integrative samplers (pharmaceutical POCIS and pesticide POCIS) were examined for their sampling efficiency of selected endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). Laboratory-based calibration of POCISs was conducted by exposing them at high and low concentrations of 14 EDCs (4-alkyl-phenols, their ethoxylate oligomers, bisphenol A, selected estrogens and synthetic steroids) for different time periods. The kinetic studies showed an integrative uptake up to 28 days. The sampling rates for the individual compounds were obtained. The use of POCISs could result in an integrative approach to the quality status of the aquatic systems especially in the case of high variation of water concentrations of EDCs. The sampling efficiency of POCISs under various field conditions was assessed after their deployment in different aquatic environments. Calibration and field performance of polar organic integrative samplers for monitoring EDCs in aquatic environments.

2008

Investigation of pollution sources and their impacts on ecosystems is important, not only for better understanding the responses of an ecosystem to pollutants, but also for making practicable prevention and control plans. In this study, ecological quality of three areas which received different source pollutants in Shanghai coast were evaluated and compared in four seasons using Shannon-Wiener index (H'), a benthic diversity index as an indicator of ecological quality of coastal waters. The genotoxicity and physical-chemical variables of water samples were also analyzed. The H' value indicated the ecological quality of Shanghai coastal waters was seriously impacted, and the ecological quality of two areas receiving waste discharges were significantly worse than that of the natural protection zone but not significantly different in four seasons. The positive genotoxic response was detected in most samples from two discharge zones but not detected in the samples from the natural protection zone. However, no significant difference was observed in water quality variables in the different coastal areas. Our study suggested that the point source pollution had significantly contributed to the genotoxicity of the coastal waters and impaired benthic assemblages, while the deterioration of ecological quality status was also critically impacted by the stressors from other sources.

A conceptual model of solute transport with bioremediation processes using sawdust as a matrix to improve the efficiency of bioremediation in porous media is presented. The transport part of the model solves the advection dispersion differential equations and the reaction part describes the heterotrophic metabolisms of several groups of bacteria. The bacterial growth is formulated using the double Monod kinetic equation. The model depicts the utilization of oxygen, nitrate, manganese, iron oxides and sulfate as electron acceptors for oxidation of organic carbon in porous media. Exchange between the different phases (mobile pore water phase, bio phase and matrix phase) is also considered in this model. Model parameters were adopted from literature on bioremediation processes. Feasibility and applicability of parameters were assessed by conducting a laboratory soil-sawdust columns experiments and comparing the simulated results with the experimental data. The results indicate that sawdust could be employed as low-cost materials to enhance the bioremediation processes in porous media. While the availability of organic carbon is one of the most important factors that affect bacterial activity in porous media, this study demonstrates that using sawdust as a carbon source can improve the bacterial activity and increase the column permeability.

During 2005-2006 the seasonal researches were taken place aiming to investigate the influence of the urban waste water on the qualitative and quantitative structure of the community of macrozoobenthos in Gabrovacka river. For this purpose five sites were determined and the sampling of the macrozoobenthos was organized on the seasonal level using Surber net.

One of the last stages in purification of waste water is by aquaculture pond using macro biological cells - fishes. In such outdoor ponds, oxygen depletion events can occur at anytime, but most likely to cause fish kills during summer hot weather. Aquaculture pond model can predict dissolved oxygen using small number of measurements and very simple numerical model. Alarm system can be activated urgently when the oxygen level drops below a certain concentration, depending on fish species. Such a model is realized for WWTP at Citluk coal mine, close to Sokobanja in Serbia, and explained in this paper.
