The Minamata Convention entered into force in 2017 with the aim to phase-out the use of mercury (Hg) in manufacturing processes such as the chlor-alkali or vinyl chloride monomer production. However, past industrial use of Hg had already resulted in extensive soil pollution, which poses a potential environmental threat. We investigated the emission of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) from Hg polluted soils in settlement areas in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, and its impact on local air Hg concentrations. Most soil Hg was found as soil matrix-bound divalent Hg (HgII). Elemental mercury (Hg0) was undetectable in soils, yet we observed substantial Hg0 emission (20–1392 ng m−2 h−1) from 27 soil plots contaminated with Hg (0.2–390 mg Hg kg−1). The emissions of Hg0 were calculated for 1274 parcels covering an area of 8.6 km2 of which 12% exceeded the Swiss soil remediation threshold of 2 mg Hg kg−1. The annual Hg0 emission from this area was approximately 6 kg a−1, which is almost 1% of the total atmospheric Hg emissions in Switzerland based on emission inventory estimates. Our results show a higher abundance of Hg resistance genes (merA) in soil microbial communities with increasing soil Hg concentrations, indicating that biotic reduction of HgII is likely an important pathway to form volatile Hg0 in these soils. The total soil Hg pool in the top 20 cm of the investigated area was 4288 kg; hence, if not remediated, these contaminated soils remain a long-term source of atmospheric Hg, which is prone to long-range atmospheric transport.

In the present investigation seaweeds of macroalgae like Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria salicornia and Gracilaria edulis used as novel biosorbent in native (KA, GS, GE) and ethanol modified (EKA, EGS, EGE) for Rhodamine B (RB) removal from aqueous solution in batch process. Effect of various biosorption parameters such as pH, initial concentration of RB, biosorbent dosage and contact time were studied. The maximum biosorption capacity determined as 9.84 (KA), 11.03 (GS), 8.96 (GE), 112.35 (EKA), 105.26 (EGS) and 97.08 mg/g (EGE), respectively towards the removal of RB from aqueous solutions. Better removal of RB was observed using EKA, EGS, and EGE biosorbents at 2.0 pH. The characterizations of the biosorbents were performed using Scanning Electron microscope and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Biosorption equilibrium data evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Jovanovic isotherm model. The Langmuir isotherm model best suited the equilibrium data for all the biosorbents studied. The rate of RB removal subjected to kinetic analysis using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion and Elovich models. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model better described the experimental data of the RB biosorption. Desorption studies performed using 0.1 M sodium hydroxide as eluting agents for regeneration and recycle analysis. The recyclability of the six biosorbents showed consistent biosorption capacity towards RB removal up to the entire three cycles. The studied biosorbents sourced from large volume and easily available, further biosorption performance indicated that the KA, GS, GE, EKA, EGS and EGE could be used as efficient, alternative and eco-friendly biosorbents for the removal of harmful dyes in the environment.

Neonicotinoids and the closely related insecticide classes sulfoximines and butenolides have recently attracted growing concerns regarding their potential negative effects on non-target organisms, including pollinators such as bees. Indeed, it is becoming increasingly clear that these effects may occur at much lower levels than those considered to be safe for humans. To properly assess the ecological and environmental risks posed by neonicotinoids, appropriate sampling and analytical procedures are needed. Here, we used honey as reliable environmental sampler and developed an unprecedentedly sensitive method based on QuEChERS and UHPLC-MS/MS for the simultaneous determination of the nine neonicotinoids and related molecules currently present on the market (acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, flupyradifurone, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, sulfoxaflor, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam). The method was validated and provided excellent levels of precision and accuracy over a wide concentration range of 3–4 orders of magnitude. Lowest limits of quantification (LLOQs) as low as 2–20 pg/g of honey depending on the analytes were reached. The method was then applied to the analysis of 36 honey samples from various regions of the World which had already been analysed for the five most common neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam) in a previous study. This allowed us to determine the long-term stability (i.e. up to 40 months) of these molecules in honey, both at room temperature and −20 °C. We found that the five pesticides were stable over a period of several years at −20 °C, but that acetamiprid and thiacloprid partially degraded at room temperature. Finally, we also measured the levels of dinotefuran, nitenpyram, sulfoxaflor and flupyradifurone and found that 28% of the samples were contaminated by at least one of these pesticides.

Predicting the translocation of organic contaminants to plants is crucial to ensure the quality of agricultural goods and assess the risk of human exposure through the food web. In this study, the performance of a modified plant uptake model was evaluated considering a number of chemicals, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), with a range of physicochemical properties; different plant species (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk (swamp morning glory), Chrysanthemum coronarium L. (crown daisy), Zea mays L. (corn), Brassica rapa pekinensis (Chinese cabbage), Cucurbita moschata (pumpkin), Raphanus sativus L. (radish), Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach) and Capsicum annuum L. (pepper)); and different types of soil (paddy soil, laterite soil and black soil). The biases of predictions from a previously used partition-limited model were −76.4% to −99.9% relative to the measured concentrations. An overall transmission factor (αtf=0.39), calculated from a linear regression of the measured bioavailable fraction (Cbᵢₒ) and the total concentration in plants, was considered a crucial modification and was included in the modified model. Cbᵢₒ was found to better represent the chemical content available in soil for root uptake. The results from this study improve the accuracy of predictions for vegetation-uptake assessments by modifying the partition-limited model and then validating the modified model using comparisons between predicted data and measured values. The accuracy of the concentrations of organic contaminants in plants improved: when using the modified model, 89.5% of the predictions were within 40% of the actual value. The average bias was limited to 1.5%–30.5%. The model showed great potential to predict plant uptake using the bioavailable fraction concentration in soil.

While several mechanisms may explain metal-related health effects, the exact cellular processes are not fully understood. We evaluated the association between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and urine arsenic (ΣAs), cadmium (Cd) and tungsten (W) exposure in the Strong Heart Study (SHS, N = 1702) and in the Strong Heart Family Study (SHFS, N = 1793).Urine metal concentrations were measured using ICP-MS. Arsenic exposure was assessed as the sum of inorganic arsenic, monomethylarsonate and dimethylarsinate levels (ΣAs). LTL was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction.In the SHS, median levels were 1.09 for LTL, and 8.8, 1.01 and 0.11 μg/g creatinine for ΣAs, Cd, and W, respectively. In the SHFS, median levels were 1.01 for LTL, and 4.3, 0.44, and 0.10 μg/g creatinine. Among SHS participants, increased urine ΣAs, Cd, and W was associated with shorter LTL. The adjusted geometric mean ratio (95% confidence interval) of LTL per an increase equal to the difference between the percentiles 90th and 10th in metal distributions was 0.85 (0.79, 0.92) for ΣAs, 0.91 (0.84, 1.00) for Cd and 0.93 (0.88, 0.98) for W. We observed no significant associations among SHFS participants. The findings also suggest that the association between arsenic and LTL might be differential depending on the exposure levels or age.Additional research is needed to confirm the association between metal exposures and telomere length.

Recently, ground ozone has become one major airborne pollutant and the frequency of ozone-induced pollution episodes has increased rapidly across China. However, due to the lack of long-term observation data, relevant research on the characteristics and influencing factors of urban ozone concentrations remains limited. Based on ground ozone observation data during 2006–2016, we quantified the causality influence of individual meteorological factors on ozone concentrations in Beijing using a convergent cross mapping (CCM) method. The result indicated that the influence of each meteorological factor on ozone concentrations varied significantly across seasons and years. At the inter-annual scale, all-year meteorological influences on ozone concentrations were much more stable than seasonal meteorological influences. At the seasonal scale, meteorological influences on ozone concentrations were stronger in spring and autumn. Amongst multiple individual factors, temperature was the key meteorological influencing factor for ozone concentrations in all seasons except winter, when wind, humidity and SSD exerted major influences on ozone concentrations. In addition to temperature, air pressure was another meteorological factor that exerted strong influences on ozone concentrations. At both the inter-annual and seasonal scale, the influence of temperature and humidity on ozone concentrations was generally stable whilst that of other factors experienced large variations. Different from PM2.5, meteorological influences on ozone concentrations were relatively weak in summer, when ozone concentrations were the highest in Beijing. Given the generally stable meteorological influences on ozone concentrations and human-induced emissions of VOCs and NOx across seasons, warming induced notable increase in summertime biogenic emissions of VOCs and NOx can be a major driver for the increasing ozone pollution episodes. This research provides useful references for understanding long-term meteorological influences on ozone concentrations in mega cities in China.

Road traffic is one of the major sources of atmospheric particles in urban areas. Modelling the contribution of this source to urban pollution requires reliable estimates of emission factors possibly resolved in size. In this work, size-resolved particle emission factors (EFs) of the mixed vehicle fleet were measured in the urban area of Lecce (south-eastern Italy). The approach used is based on vertical fluxes measured with eddy-covariance, counting of vehicles, and estimation of footprints. Results show that the average EF in number (range 0.009–3 μm) was 2.2*10¹⁴ #/Veh km, being dominated by ultrafine particles (Dₚ < 0.25 μm) due to exhaust emissions. EF number size distribution decreases with particle size. A reduction of more than four orders of magnitude was observed at Dₚ ≅ 0.9 μm. EF mass size distribution reaches a maximum around Dₚ ≅ 0.3 μm then decreases until Dₚ ≅ 0.9 μm. For larger particles EF in mass increases for the influence of non-exhaust emissions. Average emission factor of PM₁ was 56 mg/Veh Km and that of PM₂.₅ was 63 mg/Veh Km. A comparison of measurements taken in 2010 and 2015 in the same area shows a decreasing trend of the average total EF in number of about 56%, likely as a consequence of the increased use of new generation vehicles following more restrictive limits for particle emissions.

The phenylpyrazole insecticide, fipronil, isused for the eradication of insects in agriculture, which also exposes various non-target groups such as birds and animals. Our aim was to assess the cardiac and pulmonary consequences of sub-acute administration of fipronil (¹∕₅ LD₅₀; 2.26 mg/kg) in the Japanese quail for fifteen days and to determine the tissue recovery over a period of 60 days. Fipronil exposure led to a significant decrease in the body weight of the treated birds. Its exposure also induced cardiac and pulmonary damage of varying degrees. Fipronil increased the lipid peroxide (LPO) and nitric oxide (NO) contents as well as indices of tissue injury in the serum of exposed birds. Furthermore, it decreased the antioxidant indices in both the organs. Most of these changes gradually reversed and the histological changes, particularly of the heart, reversed completely by day-60 of recovery. Furthermore, alterations in the mRNA gene expressions of Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), Interleukin 6 (IL-6), and Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were monitored by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In both the tissues, a significant up-regulation of the transcripts was recorded after fipronil administration, which was reversed during the recovery period in the heart tissue except for TNF-α, while the transcripts in the lung tissue declined non-significantly. This study showed that the exposure of Japanese quail to fipronil has a profound negative impact on heart and lung including oxidative injury and tissue inflammation. Fipronil can induce the activity of NF-κB inflammatory -signaling pathway that play a role in the associated tissue inflammation. Although most of the cardiac changes could be reversed after a recovery period of sixty days, the pulmonary changes did not reverse much.

The intensive use of Cu-based pesticides in agriculture could have an unintended impact on the ecosystems and human health via different exposure pathways. This paper presents the results of experiments involving colloidal stability, aggregation, and dissolution of Cu₂O commercial pesticide under various environmental conditions in view of ecological implications. The investigated pesticide contains ∼750 g kg⁻¹ Cu (75% weight of product), Cu₂O particles with sizes < 1 μm, and nominal size fraction of Cu₂O nanoparticles. The co-presence of Ca²⁺ (20 mM) and humic acid (HA, 15 mg L⁻¹) significantly modulates (p < 0.001) the colloidal stability and mobility of particles. The dissolution of Cu at pH 5.5 was about 85%, 90%, and 75% weight more than the dissolution of Cu at pH 7.0, pH 8.5, and pH 7.0 and pH 8.5 combined, respectively in all dispersions. However, increasing HA content from 0 to 15 mg L⁻¹ reduced the dissolution of Cu by 56%, 50%, and 40% weight at pH 5.5, 7.0, and 8.5, respectively. Thus, pH below 7.0 is a critical factor to control the dissolution and bioavailability of Cu that may pose ecotoxicity and environmental pollution, whereas pH above 7.0 and the presence of HA attenuate the pH effect. These findings provide insight into how the potential mobility and bioavailability of Cu is modulated by the water chemistry under various environmental scenarios and media.

This work explores the use of Raman micro-spectroscopy to determine sources of airborne particulate matter collected on PM₂.₅ air filters in Imperial Valley, California. The goal is to examine if nearby soil is a potential source of particles sampled on air filters deployed in an urbanized desert area during events of unusually high PM₂.₅ excursions. Particle specific composition information can be an indicator of potential origin. This can provide insights into the source of unexpectedly high proportion of large particles sampled on PM₂.₅ filters in the vicinity of Imperial Valley. The measured spectral correspondence between the filter and soil particles, in the size range of 2.5–10 μm, is consistent with windblown dust being a likely source of the larger (>2.5 μm) particles collected on the PM₂.₅ filters. Additionally, these particles were identified as components of commonly occurring crustal minerals in the vicinity of the sampling site, such as iron oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, titanium dioxides and aluminosilicates. A substantial portion of the analyzed filter particles displayed a strong broadband fluorescence signal, which is consistent with the presence of organic matter and has been recognized as a marker for soil related origin of the filter particles. Elemental carbon (soot) was found to be prevalent among the particles as well, suggesting the existence of combustion related sources. Comparison between a heavily loaded filter sample and a filter with a more typical, lower loading did not show any obvious difference in chemical compositions. In both cases the particles appeared to be of crustal origin with the prevalence of elemental carbon. The primary difference between these two filter samples appear to be their particle size distribution - the heavily loaded filter sample contained greater proportion of large particles (>2.5 μm), and was more consistent with spectral signature of soils analyzed from the region.
