Evidence concerning effects of ambient air pollution on homocysteine (HCY) metabolism is scarce. We aimed to explore the associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure and the HCY metabolism markers and to evaluate effect modifications by folate, vitamin B₁₂, and methylenetetrahyfrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism. Between December 1, 2017 and January 5, 2018, we conducted a panel study in 88 young college students in Guangzhou, China, and received 5 rounds of health examinations. Real-time concentrations of PMs with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 (PM₂.₅), ≤1.0 (PM₁.₀), and ≤0.1 (PM₀.₁) were monitored, and the serum HCY metabolism markers (i.e., HCY, S-Adenosylhomocysteine [SAH], and S-Adenosylmethionine [SAM]) were repeatedly measured. We applied linear mixed effect models combined with a distributed lag model to evaluate the associations of PMs with the HCY metabolism markers. We also explored effect modifications of folate, vitamin B₁₂, and the MTHFR C677T polymorphism on the associations. We observed that higher concentrations of PM₂.₅ and PM₁.₀ were associated with higher serum levels of HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio (e.g., a 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₂.₅ during lag 0 day and lag 5 day was significantly associated with 1.3–19.4%, 1.3–28.2%, 6.2–64.4%, and 4.8–28.2% increase in HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio, respectively). In addition, we observed that the associations of PM₂.₅ with the HCY metabolism markers were stronger in participants with lower B vitamins levels. This study demonstrated that short-term exposure to PM₂.₅ and PM₁.₀ was deleteriously associated with the HCY metabolism markers, especially in people with lower B vitamins levels.

Total concentration and chemical partitioning of heavy metals are commonly used in environmental quality assessment; however, their comparability and comprehensive application are far less discussed. Herein, bioavailability, pollution and eco-risk of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in surface sediments of Erhai Lake were evaluated referring to multiple indices following the experimental methods of complete digestion, optimized Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) and 1.0 M HCl extractions. Results of bioavailability for most metals were similar and comparable from BCR and HCl extractions. While bioavailable concentrations of Cd and Pb from HCl extraction were significantly (p < 0.01) lower than those from BCR extraction, indicating BCR extraction is more efficient. Results of enrichment factor (EF) and concentration enrichment ratio (CER) suggested that Cd was the highest polluted element followed by As, Pb and Zn, whereas Cr, Cu and Ni were mainly natural in origin. Similar concentrations of anthropogenic As from EF and CER assessments indicated anthropogenic As mainly existed in bioavailable form. However, anthropogenic Cd, Pb and Zn existed in both bioavailable and residue forms, resulting in the underestimation of anthropogenic metals by the CER assessment. The sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), potential ecological risk index (Er) and risk assessment code (RAC) showed inconsistent eco-risks for each of the metals except Cd. Combining pollution level and chemical partitioning with SQGs, Er and RAC assessments, high eco-risk of Cd, moderate eco-risk of As and Pb, and low eco-risk of Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were graded. Our study highlights the limitation of single index and the necessity of integrating multiple indices following total concentration and chemical partitioning in metal pollution and eco-risk assessments.

As a volatile organic compound existing in the atmosphere, methanol plays a key role in atmospheric chemistry due to its comparatively high abundance and long lifetime. Croplands are a significant source of biogenic methanol, but there is a lack of systematic assessment for the production and emission of methanol from crops in various phases. In this study, methanol emissions from spring wheat during the growing period were estimated using a developed emission model. The temporal and spatial variations of methanol emissions of spring wheat in a Canadian province were investigated. The averaged methanol emission of spring wheat is found to be 37.94 ± 7.5 μg·m⁻²·h⁻¹, increasing from north to south and exhibiting phenological peak to valley characteristics. Moreover, cold crop districts are projected to be with higher increase in air temperature and consequent methanol emissions during 2020–2099. Furthermore, the seasonality of methanol emissions is found to be positively correlated to concentrations of CO, filterable particulate matter, and PM₁₀ but negatively related to NO₂ and O₃. The uncertainty and sensitivity analysis results suggest that methanol emissions show a Gamma probabilistic distribution, and growth length, air temperature, solar radiation and leafage are the most important influencing variables. In most cases, methanol emissions increase with air temperature in the range of 3–35 °C while the excessive temperature may result in decreased methanol emissions because of inactivated enzyme activity or increased instant methanol emissions due to heat injury. Notably, induced emission might be the major source of biogenic methanol of mature leaves. The results of this study can be used to develop appropriate strategies for regional emission management of cropping systems.

This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in water, sediment, and crayfish samples within pond and rice-crayfish co-culture breeding modes in Jianli prefecture, China. Microplastics in environmental and biological samples were systematically extracted by CaCl₂ solution, digested by H₂O₂ and KOH, and identified by μ-FTIR. A cleansing treatment for crayfish was performed in pure water before dissection and microplastic accumulation in different tissues (gill, stomach, gut, and flesh) of non-cleansed and cleansed crayfish were compared. The average microplastic abundances were 1.3 ± 0.1–2.5 ± 0.1 particles/L, 0.03 ± 0.01–0.04 ± 0.02 particles/g, and 0.17 ± 0.07–0.92 ± 0.19 particles/individual in water, sediment, and crayfish samples, respectively. Microplastics were detected in all studied crayfish tissues, except the flesh. There were no significant differences in microplastic abundances in water (P = 0.82), sediment (P = 0.90), and crayfish (P = 0.47 for non-cleansed samples; P = 0.30 for cleansed samples) between two breeding modes despite the detection of relatively higher microplastic abundances in the samples from the pond breeding mode. Microplastic accumulation in non-cleansed crayfish stomachs and guts (0.71 ± 0.18 particles/individual) was higher (P < 0.01) than that recorded in their gills (0.13 ± 0.06 particles/individual). Moreover, microplastics present in the stomachs and guts of cleansed crayfish were significantly less abundant (P < 0.01) than in non-cleansed crayfish, although this was not observed in the gills (P = 0.99). The majority of microplastic particles in this study had fiber-like shapes, blue and transparent colors, a size smaller than 1 mm, and polymer types of PP:PE and PE. The results demonstrate that microplastics in the environment can accumulate in the internal tissues of crayfish, which may pose a potential risk to humans through food consumption without the removal of the gills, stomach, and guts. This study provides valuable information for understanding microplastic accumulation in the different tissues of crayfish and the potential risk of human exposure to microplastics from crayfish as a food supplement.

Pollen allergens, widely present in the atmosphere, are the main cause of seasonal respiratory diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. Although previous studies have reported that nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and ozone (O₃) promote pollen allergy, the specific biological processes and underlying mechanisms remain less understood. In this study, Platanus pollen grains were exposed to gaseous pollutants (NO₂ and O₃). We employed environmental electron microscopy, flow cytometry, western blot assay, enzyme-linked immunoassay, ultraviolet absorption spectrometry, circular dichroism, and protein mass spectrometry to characterise the subpollen particles (SPPs) released from pollen grains. Furthermore, we determined the immunogenicity and pathogenicity induced by Platanus pollen allergen a 3 (Pla a 3). Our results demonstrated that NO₂ and O₃ could damage the pollen cell membranes in SPPs and increase the amount of Pla a 3 allergen released into the atmosphere. Additionally, NO₂ and O₃ altered the structure of Pla a3 protein through nitrification and oxidation, which not only enhanced the immunogenicity of allergens but also increased the stability of the protein. In vivo analysis using an animal model indicated that NO₂ and O₃ greatly aggravated pollen-induced pneumonia. Thus, our study provides guidance for the prevention of pollen allergic diseases.

Water pollution by veterinary antibiotics (VAs) resulting from livestock production is associated with severe environmental and human health risks. While upward trends in global animal product consumption signal that these risks might exacerbate toward the future, VA related water pollution is currently insufficiently understood. To increase this understanding, the present research assesses processes influencing VA pollution from VA administration to their discharge into freshwater bodies, using an integrated modelling approach (IMA). For the VAs amoxicillin, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, sulfamethazine, and tetracycline we estimate loads administered to livestock, excretion, degradation during manure storage, fate in soil and transport to surface water. Fate and transport are modelled using the VA transport model (VANTOM), which is fed with estimates from the Pan-European Soil Erosion Risk Assessment (PESERA). The grey water footprint (GWF) is used to indicate the severity of water pollution in volumetric terms by combining VA loads and predicted no effect concentrations. We apply our approach to the German-Dutch Vecht river catchment, which is characterized by high livestock densities. Results show a VA mass load decrease larger than 99% for all substances under investigation, from their administration to surface water emission. Due to metabolization in the body, degradation during manure storage and degradation in soil, VA loads are reduced by 45%, 80% and 90% on average, respectively. While amoxicillin and sulfamethazine dissipate quickly after field application, significant fractions of doxycycline, oxytetracycline and tetracycline accumulate in the soil. The overall Vecht catchment's GWF is estimated at 250,000 m³ yr⁻¹, resulting from doxycycline (81% and 19% contribution from the German and Dutch catchment part respectively). Uncertainty ranges of several orders of magnitude, as well as several remaining limitations to the presented IMA, underscore the importance to further develop and refine the approach.

Exposure to elevated particulate matter (PM) pollution is of great concern to both the general public and air quality management agencies. At urban traffic intersections, for example, pedestrians are often at a higher risk of exposure to near-source PM pollution from traffic while waiting on the roadside or while walking in the crosswalk. This study offers an in-depth investigation of pedestrian exposure to PM pollution at an urban traffic intersection. Fixed-site measurements near an urban intersection were conducted to examine the variations in particles of various sizes through traffic signal cycles. This process aids in the identification of major PM dispersion patterns on the roadside. In addition, mobile measurements of pedestrian exposure to PM were conducted across six time intervals that correspond to different segments of a pedestrian’s journey when passing through the intersection. Measurement results are used to estimate and compare the cumulative deposited doses of PM by size categories and journey segments for pedestrians at an intersection. Furthermore, comparisons of pedestrian exposure to PM on a sunny day and a cloudy day were analyzed. The results indicate the importance of reducing PM pollution at intersections and provide policymakers with a foundation for possible measures to reduce pedestrian PM exposure at urban traffic intersections.

Studies in the literature concern the toxicity of nanoparticles either in a Petri dish or in agar media-based tests. Therefore, for environmental relevance, individual and binary mixtures of metal oxide nanoparticles (M-NPs) cadmium oxide (CdO-NP) and copper oxide (CuO-NP) were tested in this study for their effect on Vigna radiata in soil with and without the addition of sawdust. Seed germination was 67% in 100 mg CuO-NP in soil without sawdust. Seeds failed to germinate in 100 mg CdO +100 mg CuO-NPs in soil without the addition of sawdust and germination was 83% at the same concentration in soil with sawdust. In sawdust added to soil, when compared with control (soil without M-NPs), the maximum reduction in shoot (82%) and root (80%) length and wet (61%) and dry (54%) weight of plant was recorded in CdO-NP treated soil. Similarly, compared with control (soil without sawdust and M-NPs), the percent reduction in shoot (61%) and root (70%) length and wet (44%) and dry (48%) weight was highest in CdO-NP treated soil not supplemented with sawdust. In a binary mixture test (CdO-NP + CuO-NP), the addition of sawdust promoted the above plant growth parameters compared with individual CdO-NP and CuO-NP tests. Cadmium (511 mg kg⁻¹ for individual and 303 mg kg⁻¹ for binary mixture tests) and Cu (953 mg kg⁻¹ for individual and 2954 mg kg⁻¹ for binary mixture tests) accumulation was higher in plants grown in soil without sawdust. The beneficial effect of sawdust addition was observed in seed germination, plant growth, and metal accumulation. With or without sawdust, the binary mixture of CdO and CuO was antagonistic. These results indicate that sawdust can prevent M-NP-induced toxicity and reduce metal accumulation in plant tissues.

Soil and groundwater contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) including cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) has become a serious problem for ecosystem functioning. Silicon (Si) may precipitate these metals as silicates, and may also form, at undersaturation of silicates, ‘Si-contaminant compounds’, i.e. particles of polymerized silica with PTEs incorporated or adsorbed by inner-sphere complexes. While the formation of these compounds in aqueous solution has been proven, their formation in soil remains unclear yet. Therefore, we conducted column experiments with a topsoil horizon artificially contaminated with Cd or Cu solutions (10 mM) in the presence (10 mM) and absence of monomeric Si, and monitored the elemental composition of the eluates during 12 irrigation steps with artificial rainwater by microwave-plasma atomic emission spectrometry, the size and charge of the particles eluted by dynamic light scattering and phase analysis light scattering, and determined the spatial distribution of total and exchangeable Cd and Cu in soil after the experiments. When Si was previously applied to soil, significantly larger particles (up to > 200 nm) in the eluates indicated Si polymerization and formation of Si-contaminant compounds. However, Cd and Cu concentrations were very low (<0.4 μM), pointing to efficient retardation in soil. In any variant, the particles formed were slightly negatively charged (−11 mV). The molar metal:Si ratios in the eluates and significant correlations between the amounts of Si and metals in soil extracted by NH₄NO₃ pointed to the formation of Si-contaminant compounds, too. More Cu than Cd was retained in soil, and significantly more in the presence of Si, but less Cu than Cd was in exchangeable form. While particularly Cu formed Si-contaminant compounds, which reduced the concentration of Cu ions, the Si-contaminant-compound particles in the eluates remained very small, thus potentially susceptible to particulate export from soil into the groundwater.

One active ingredient can be a component of different types of formulations of pesticides, while the toxicity of its formulations may vary depending on various constituents used in the mixture. The present study focuses on evaluating the effects of the active ingredient clomazone and its formulations (Rampa® EC and GAT Cenit 36 CS, both containing 360 g a.i./l of clomazone) on non-target aquatic macrophytes. The two formulation types differ in their active ingredient release and presumed environmental impact. In order to cover different ecological traits, two species of aquatic macrophytes – the floating monocot Lemna minor and the rooted dicot Myriophyllum aquaticum, were used as test models. The results of this study revealed differences in the sensitivity of tested plants to clomazone. Based on the most sensitive parameters, M. aquaticum proved to be more sensitive than L. minor to the technical ingredient and both formulations. The species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach that was tried out in an attempt to create a higher tier step of risk assessment of clomazone for primary producers indicates that tests on rooted macrophytes can add value in risk assessment of plant protection products. The capsule formulation of clomazone was less toxic than the emulsion for L. minor, but more toxic for M. aquaticum. The most toxic for L. minor was the emulsifiable concentrate formulation Rampa® EC, followed by technical clomazone (EC₅₀ 33.3 and 54.0 mg a.i./l, respectively), while the aqueous capsule suspension formulation GAT Cenit 36 CS did not cause adverse effects. On the other hand, the most toxic for M. aquaticum was the formulation GAT Cenit 36 CS, followed by technical clomazone and the formulation Rampa® EC, demonstrating a greater effect of the capsule formulation.
