Various environmental studies have employed the biomonitoring of fish in their aquatic ecosystems in order to identify potential metabolic responses to the exposome. In this study, we applied in vivo solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to perform non-lethal sampling on the muscle tissue of living fish to extract toxicants and various endogenous metabolites. Sixty white suckers (Catastomus commersonii) were sampled from sites upstream, adjacent, and downstream from the oil sands development region of the Athabasca River (Alberta, Canada) in order to track their biochemical responses to potential contaminants. In vivo SPME sampling facilitated the extraction of a wide range of endogenous metabolites, mainly related to lipid metabolism. The obtained results revealed significant changes in the levels of numerous metabolites, including eicosanoids, linoleic acids, and fat-soluble vitamins, in fish sampled in different areas of the river, thus demonstrating SPME's applicability for the direct monitoring of exposure to different environmental toxicants. In addition, several classes of toxins, including petroleum-related compounds, that can cause serious physiological impairment were tentatively identified in the extracts. In vivo SPME, combined with the analysis of contaminants and endogenous metabolites, provided important information about the exposome; as such, this approach represents a potentially powerful and non-lethal tool for identifying the mechanisms that produce altered metabolic pathways in response to the mixtures of different environmental pollutants.

Research on hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) has increased since its listing in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2011. However, thorough reports on recent data regarding this topic are lacking. Moreover, potential associations between HCBD and some chlorinated organics have usually been ignored in previous research. In this review, possible formation pathways and sources, current environmental occurrences and human exposure risks of HCBD are discussed, as well as the association with several organochlorine compounds. The results reveal that unintentional production and emission from industrial activities and waste treatments are the main sources of HCBD. Similar precursors are found for HCBD and chlorobenzenes, indicating the presence of common sources. Although recent data indicates that levels of HCBD in the environment are generally low, risks from human exposure to HCBD, together with other pollutants, may be high. More attention in the future needs to be paid to the mixed contamination of HCBD and other pollutants from common sources.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the contamination of sewage sludge produced by municipal waste treatment plants in Poland by viable eggs of intestinal parasites of the genera Ascaris, Toxocara and Trichuris (ATT). Ninety-two municipal, mechanical-biological sewage treatment plants located within Poland were selected. These plants belonged to types of agglomerations: group 0 (large), group 1 (medium), group 2 (smaller) and group 3 (small). Samples were collected at the final stage of sewage treatment after the addition of flocculent to sludge, followed by dehydration. The samples were examined by a method adjusted to examine sewage sludge dehydrated using polyelectrolytes. The viability of the isolated eggs was evaluated based on incubation in a moist chamber. Live eggs of intestinal nematodes were found in 99% of samples. Most samples were contaminated by the eggs of Ascaris spp. (95%) and Toxocara spp. (96%). However, Trichuris spp. eggs were detected in 60% of samples. The mean number of eggs in 1 kg of dry mass (eggs/kg d.m.) was 5600 for Ascaris, 3700 for Toxocara and 1100 for Trichuris. The highest number of ATT eggs was detected in samples from sewage treatment plants located in south-eastern and central Poland. The highest number of ATT eggs was found in sewage sludge produced in large sewage treatment plants (agglomeration Groups 0 and 1), with mean values of 15,000 and 8900 eggs/kg d.m. The present study is the first parasitological investigation conducted on a large number of samples (92 samples) taken from various types of municipal sewage treatment plants located throughout Poland (16 regions) after the common introduction of polyelectrolytes during sewage sludge dehydration. The results of this study indicate that sludge produced in municipal sewage treatment plants is highly contaminated with parasite eggs.

Although the development of constructing oil-water separation materials is quick, the defects of using harmful regents, weak stability and single function still exist. Here, we report an effective and less-harmful system with poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/ZnO composite solution to fabricate robust superhydrophobic surfaces for oil-water separation and removal of organic pollutant. The obtained samples were characterized by a range of instruments. The water contact angle (WCA) of coated cotton was 155.6°, which attributed to the synergetic effect of low surface energy of PDMS and roughness of ZnO nanoparticles. The coated cotton was tolerant to mechanical damage, various corrosive solvents and temperature conditions. The emphasis of this study is the combination of superhydrophobicity and photocatalysis, resulting in multifunctional cotton with dual self-cleaning properties, outstanding oil-water separation ability and efficient water purification property. When utilized a simple laboratory facility, the cotton could separate water from oil-water mixture with a high efficiency (99.3%). Furthermore, the dyed water could be purified with coated cotton through photocatalysis under UV light and became colorless. Meanwhile, this mild and facile method could also be utilized to modify other porous substrates, such as PET, silk, non-woven and sponge. Therefore, the characteristics of environmental protection and easy operation make this cotton a desirable candidate for extensive applications in self-cleaning, oil-water separation and water purification.

The environmental concerns regarding the possible threats of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) to aquatic environments are increasing. However, information about TBBPA cycling in the water-vegetation-sediment systems of shallow lakes is limited. In a shallow lake, wind-induced disturbance is considered as the key factor of affecting the cycling of contaminants. To address this issue, the TBBPA distribution and elimination processes were simulated for three typical wind speeds by using an annular flume. Four forms of TBBPA were studied in these systems, including water, suspended solids (SS), vegetation and sediment. The results showed that the mass distributions of TBBPA in water, SS and vegetation increased remarkably while enhancing the wind-induced disturbances, which resulted from the release of TBBPA from the sediment through resuspension and adsorption-desorption processes. However, most of the TBBPA (up to 94%) still accumulated in the sediment. Wind-induced disturbances and vegetation both increased the TBBPA elimination rate in the water-vegetation-sediment systems. The half-life (T₁/₂) of TBBPA in the fast wind condition was 16.1 ± 0.2 days, which was shorter than that in the static condition (29.8 ± 0.9 days). Compared to the systems without vegetation, the presence of vegetation shortened the T₁/₂ by 7.3 days in the static condition. Furthermore, a structural equation model (SEM) was used to assess the direct and indirect effects of environmental factors on the TBBPA amounts in each form. The main effects of wind speed and vegetation in the TBBPA cycling of each form (except for the TBBPA on vegetation) were indirect by affecting the dissolved oxygen (DO), velocity and suspended solids concentration (SSC). Overall, the findings provide useful information about the fate of TBBPA and other related organic contaminants in shallow lake systems.

In order for Alberta's thick bitumen to be transported through pipelines, condensates are added creating a diluted bitumen (dilbit) mixture. Recent pipeline expansion projects have generated concern about potential dilbit spills on aquatic wildlife health. Studies have suggested that polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are toxic to aquatic vertebrates and could potentially also interfere with their endocrine system. The research objectives of this study were to investigate the toxicity of dilbit to developing frog embryos and to identify the molecular mechanisms of action involved. Fertilized embryos of Western clawed frog (Silurana tropicalis) were exposed for 72 h to water accommodated fractions (WAF; 0.7–8.9 μg/L TPACs) and chemically-enhanced WAFs (CEWAF; 0.09–56.7 μg/L TPACs) of Access Western Blend (AWB) and Cold Lake Blend (CLB) dilbits. Both dilbit's CEWAFs significantly increased embryonic mortality and malformation incidence in the highest treatments tested, while WAF treatments led to no visible toxic effects. Increases of the cytochrome P450 1A (cyp1a) mRNA levels were observed for all WAF and CEWAF dilbit treatments suggesting that phase I detoxification is activated in the dilbit-exposed larvae. When exposed to PAC concentrations ranging from 0.09 to 8.9 μg/L, the frogs displayed no observable malformations, but expressed significant increases of cyp1a mRNA levels (2- to 25-fold; indicating a suitable biomarker of exposure); however, when concentrations were of 46.6 μg/L or higher, both malformed frog phenotype and induction of cyp1a mRNA level (>250-fold) were measured (indicating a suitable biomarker of response). The expression of several genes related to cellular detoxification and endocrine disruption were also measured, but were not significantly altered by the treatments. In sum, cyp1a mRNA level is a highly sensitive endpoint to measure subtle molecular changes induced by PAC exposure in the frog embryos and larvae, and data suggest that PAC concentration higher than 46 μg/L would be toxic to the developing S. tropicalis.

In order to evaluate the effect of mining activity on the environment of the Qhorveh mining area in the west of Iran, the geological, ecological and environmental data, related to social development and regional economic status, were used. The geological data included seven sub-indices, such as vegetation coverage, land utilization type, and fault activity; ecological data, with two sub-indices, such as degree of ecological environment recovery; and finally, environmental data, with three sub-indices, such as soil and dust pollutions. These were selected based on the literature and expert opinion which were utilized for environmental pollution and geo-ecological (EPGE) risk assessment of the study site. Remote sensing (RS) image, field sampling, digital elevation map, and data retrieved from different government agencies were used to generate layers for the sub-indices in the geographic information system (GIS) environment. In addition, the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to determine the weight of sub-indices. Five levels consisting of best, good, middle, poor and worst were used to describe the EPGE risk assessment of the Qhorveh mining area. Results showed that worst and poor levels of EPGE risk are in the east and northeast of the study area where the gold and pumice mines are located while best and good levels of EPGE risk are in its center where the stone mines are located. According to the results of this research, the EPGE risk assessment of the Qhorveh mining area is affected by the environmental pollution index with its highest weight (0.3908). It can be concluded that the integration of the RS, GIS and AHP methods proposed in this study improved the evaluation quality of EPGE risk assessment.

Evaluate the relationship between arthritis diagnosis in those over 50 and exposure to extreme air pollution in utero or infancy (<1 year of age).Compare rates of arthritis diagnosis between groups that experienced differential air pollution exposure in early-life due to quasi-random variation in birth location and date relative to the 1952 Great Smog in London. We use regression-estimated difference-in-differences analyses based on English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA) data.In the 2816 respondent sample, aged 51–62, the arthritis diagnosis rate is 22.8%, with 16.4% reporting osteoarthritis and 4.6% reporting rheumatoid arthritis. We estimate that exposure to the Great Smog in infancy increases the arthritis diagnosis rate by 23.4 percentage points (95% CI: 1.97 to 44.8). Decomposing these results by type of arthritis reveals that the rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis rate increases due to infant exposure are larger and more significant than those for osteoarthritis: 14.9 percentage points (95% CI: 0.495 to 29.4) versus 9.5 percentage points (95% CI: −11.9 to 30.8). In utero exposure is not associated with significant increases in arthritis diagnosis rates.Our results are the first to link early-life air pollution exposure to later-life arthritis diagnoses, and suggest a particularly strong link for RA. These findings are consistent with those of shorter-term, correlational studies, and indicate that health effects of air pollution exposure can span decades and extend beyond cardiopulmonary systems.

Absolute principal component score/multiple linear regression (APCS/MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were applied to a dataset consisting of 10 heavy metals in 300 surface soils samples. Robust geostatistics were used to delineate and compare the factors derived from these two receptor models. Both APCS/MLR and PMF afforded three similar source factors with comparable contributions, but APCS/MLR had some negative and unidentified contributions; thus, PMF, with its optimal non-negativity results, was adopted for source apportionment. Experimental variograms for each factor from two receptor models were built using classical Matheron's and three robust estimators. The best association of experimental variograms fitted to theoretical models differed between the corresponding APCS and PMF-factors. However, kriged interpolation indicated that the corresponding APCS and PMF-factor showed similar spatial variability. Based on PMF and robust geostatistics, three sources of 10 heavy metals in Guangrao were determined. As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, and partially Hg, Pb, Cd originated from natural source. The factor grouping these heavy metals showed consistent distribution with parent material map. 43.1% of Hg and 13.2% of Pb were related to atmosphere deposition of human inputs, with high values of their association patterns being located around urban areas. 29.6% concentration of Cd was associated with agricultural practice, and the hotspot coincided with the spatial distribution of vegetable-producing soils. Overall, natural source, atmosphere deposition of human emissions, and agricultural practices, explained 81.1%, 7.3%, and 11.6% of the total of 10 heavy metals concentrations, respectively. Receptor models coupled with robust geostatistics could successfully estimate the source apportionment of heavy metals in soils.

Bacterial endotoxins are a component of particulate matter (PM) with anticipated health implications, yet we know little about how host reception of endotoxin through toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is affected by its association with other PM components. Subsequently, we investigated the relationship between endotoxin concentration (recombinant Factor C (rFC) assay) and host recognition (HEK Blue-TLR4 NF-kB reporter cell line based assay) in various compositions of urban PM, including road traffic, industrial and urban green land use classes. While the assays did not correlate strongly between each other, the TLR4 reporter cell line was found to be better correlated to the IL-8 response of PM. Furthermore, the ability of the quantified endotoxin (rFC assay) to stimulate the TLR4/MD-2 complex was significantly affected by the urban land use class, where traffic locations were found to be significantly higher in bioactive endotoxin than the industrial and green locations. We subsequently turned our attention to PM composition and characterized the samples based on transition metal content (through ICP-MS). The effect of nickel and cobalt – previously reported to activate the hTLR4/MD-2 complex – was found to be negligible in comparison to that of iron. Here, the addition of iron as a factor significantly improved the regression model between the two endotoxin assays, explaining 77% of the variation of the TLR4 stimulation and excluding the significant effect of land use class. Moreover, the effect of iron proved to be more than a correlation, since dosing LPS with Fe²⁺ led to an increase up to 64% in TLR4 stimulation, while Fe²⁺ without LPS was unable to stimulate a response. This study shows that endotoxin quantification assays (such as the rFC assay) may not always correspond to human biological recognition of endotoxin in urban PM, while its toxicity can be synergistically influenced by the associated PM composition.
