Airborne bacteria and fungi are important biological components of bioaerosol and play an important role in the conservation environmental. A microbiological study on bioaerosoles was carried out at the Municipal Waste Utilization Plant in Northern Poland and at points located beyond the facility at the distance of 150, 450, 1000 and 1250 m. The highest emission of bioaerosol occurred in the area of the waste landfill site and during compost pile turning. The total number of mesophilic bacteria, filamentous fungi and actinomycetes reached the values up to 104 CFU/m3. Strong air contamination with mannitol-positive and mannitol-negative staphylococci occurred remarkably more frequently in the area of the test facility than in the points beyond it. The number of indicator bacteria of Pseudomonas fluorescens was quite changeable and did not depend on a distance from pollutant emission source. The number of Escherichia coli rods remained at the low level of about 102 CFU/m3, and they were only isolated sporadically in the points beyond the landfill. The highest percentage of bacterial aerosol comprised Gram-positive cocci, and then Gram-positive bacilli. Mycological analyses confirmed the presence in the studied air of fungi with potentially allergic and mycotoxinogenic properties, such as: Aspergillus fumigatus, A. niger, A. terreus, Cladosporium herbarum and the genus Fusarium. The concentration level of microbial bioaerosol several times exceeded the threshold values recommended by the Polish Standards. The factors influenced the concentration of microorganisms in the tested air included the distance of the active landfill, weather conditions and the season.

Samples of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) in the post-desulfurized seawater discharged from a coal-fired power plant together with samples of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) over the post-desulfurized seawater surface were collected and analyzed to study the mercury isotope fractionation during transfer from post-desulfurized seawater to air. Experimental results showed that when DGM in the seawater was converted to GEM in the air, the δ202Hg and Δ199Hg values were changed, ranging from −2.98 to −0.04‰ and from −0.31 to 0.64‰, respectively. Aeration played a key role in accelerating the transformation of DGM to GEM, and resulted in light mercury isotopes being more likely to be enriched in the GEM. The ratio Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg was 1.626 in all samples, suggesting that mercury mass independent fractionation occurred owing to the nuclear volume effect during the transformation. In addition, mass independent fractionation of mercury even isotopes was found in the GEM above the post-desulfurized seawater surface in the aeration pool.

Kochi City, situated in the vicinity of the industrial hub and marine niche, is significantly loaded with ionic compounds and get into the atmospheric aerosols which deteriorate the health status of the environment. The distribution of both acid and water extractable cations (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+) with respect to time and space, in the two phases (I and II) were performed at distinct sites of Kochi, Kerala, India. The study revealed that the water soluble Na+ ion is highlighted in the estuarine site (E1) with momentous load at the coastal site (C1) implying the sea salt influence at these two sites. The average NH4+ and K+ concentration (acid and water soluble fractions) recorded is mostly at the industrial site (R2) which may be endorsed due to the application of NPK fertilizers and also from the process of wood burning sources. Further, K+ is the prominent acid and water soluble cation recorded in the study. Mg2+ ion having both oceanic and anthropogenic origin contributes the present observed pollution load. Average acid soluble Ca2+ content is noted maximum at the estuarine spot E1, where as the hike with respect to water soluble fraction of this ion is noticed at the industrial site, R2. These inferences justify the influence of point sources such as industrial, crustal and construction related activities affecting in and around this metropolis.

Mediterranean marine protected area (MPA) design patterns regarding geographic distribution, size, spacing and shape were analysed as a proxy of the region's MPA's ecological effectiveness and a first step towards an ecologically coherent MPA network.Results for legally designated MPAs and ecologically functional MPAs accounting for overlaps are presented. Geographically, Mediterranean MPA area is very unevenly distributed, with four-fifths concentrated in just three countries of the north-western part of the basin. Average distance between functional MPAs lies within recommended ecological thresholds, which suggests adequate potential connectivity of the Mediterranean MPA system. Mediterranean designated MPAs are larger than MPAs worldwide on average, although they are generally smaller than international guidance suggests at different levels: ecoregion, country and designation category. On average, Mediterranean designated and functional MPAs have relatively high compactness, which makes them prone to spillover and adequate viability, and less vulnerable to edge effects.

Stable isotopes (δ15N, δ18O) can serve as tracers for sources of nitrogen in the receiving environment. Hong Kong discharges ~3×106m3d−1 of treated wastewater into the ocean from 68 facilities implementing preliminary to tertiary treatment. We sampled treated sewage from 18 plants across 5 treatment types and examined receiving seawater from northeast Hong Kong. We analyzed nitrate and nitrite (NO3−+NO2−, hereafter NOx) ammonium (NH4+), phosphate (PO4+) concentrations and δ15NNOx, δ18ONOx. Sewage effluents contained high mean nutrient concentrations (NO3−=260μmolL−1, NH4+=1400μmolL−1, PO4+=50μmolL−1) with some indication of nitrogen removal in advanced treatment types. Mean δ15NNOx of sewage effluents from all plants and treatment types (12‰) was higher than natural sources and varied spatially and seasonally. There was no overall effect of sewage treatment type on δ15NNOx. A mass balance model indicated that sewage (>68%) remains a dominant source of nitrate pollution in seawater in Tolo Harbor.

Squids are active and opportunistic predators that feed on a wide range of prey. Their active movements in the water column and their voracity promote a high consumption of food. In the pelagic environment off Ecuador, marine pollution is characterized by plastic debris with a mainland origin, including plastics trash of fishing gears. The objective of this work was to describe the presence of plastic remains in the stomach contents of Dosidicus gigas caught off the coast of Ecuador. Results demonstrated that 12% of the stomachs contained plastic remains. These plastics were identified as multifilament of polyethylene lines and polyvinyl chloride remains. Findings of this work could be related to an increase in the discharge of solid materials in the water column, increasing the probability to be ingested by the jumbo squid.

This study was aimed at testing the applicability of modified Weber number scaling with Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude oil, and developing a Reynolds number scaling approach for oil droplet size prediction for high viscosity oils. Dispersant to oil ratio and empirical coefficients were also quantified. Finally, a two-step Rosin-Rammler scheme was introduced for the determination of droplet size distribution. This new approach appeared more advantageous in avoiding the inconsistency in interfacial tension measurements, and consequently delivered concise droplet size prediction. Calculated and observed data correlated well based on Reynolds number scaling. The relation indicated that chemical dispersant played an important role in reducing the droplet size of ANS under different seasonal conditions. The proposed Reynolds number scaling and two-step Rosin-Rammler approaches provide a concise, reliable way to predict droplet size distribution, supporting decision making in chemical dispersant application during an offshore oil spill.

Determining how coral ecosystems are structured within extreme environments may provide insights into how coral reefs are impacted by future climate change. Benthic community structure was examined within the Persian Gulf, and adjacent Musandam and northern Oman regions across a 3-year period (2008–2011) in which all regions were exposed to major disturbances. Although there was evidence of temporal switching in coral composition within regions, communities predominantly reflected local environmental conditions and the disturbance history of each region. Gulf reefs showed little change in coral composition, being dominated by stress-tolerant Faviidae and Poritidae across the 3years. In comparison, Musandam and Oman coral communities were comprised of stress-sensitive Acroporidae and Pocilloporidae; Oman communities showed substantial declines in such taxa and increased cover of stress-tolerant communities. Our results suggest that coral communities may persist within an increasingly disturbed future environment, albeit in a much more structurally simple configuration.

The inner 1/3 of Isahaya Bay which is a tributary of Ariake Sea in Japan was shut off from the sea by a dike for the reclamation and disaster prevention in 1997. On the other hand, several environmental and fisheries problems occurred in Ariake Sea after 1990s. Some fishermen insisted that the major reason for the decrease of fishing must be the influence of the dike construction and filed lawsuits. Now the court decision is fixed and Japanese government must open the gates to reintroduce sea water into the reservoir. We made numerical simulations of currents, hydrography and sediment transport to assess the influences of the gate opening. To choose the environmentally wise procedure of gate opening, it is needed to reduce the erosion and deposition of bottom sediments caused by the enhanced tidal current and to minimize the occurrence of hypoxia in the reservoir.

Plastics are the most common material of marine litter and have become a global pollution concern. They are persistent in the environment where they gradually degrade into increasingly smaller particles–microplastics (MP). Our study presents results of sea-surface monitoring for MP in the Slovenian part of the Trieste Bay in the Northern Adriatic Sea. In 17 trawls conducted over a 20-month period we found a high average concentration of 406×103MPparticles/km2. Over 80% of the particles were identified as polyethylene. The significant variability of MP concentrations obtained on different sampling dates is explained by use of surface current maps and a recently developed Markov chain marine litter distribution model for the Adriatic Sea.
