Atrazine has been used on Chinese farmlands for a long time and over a wide range. The concentration of atrazine (1.86–1100 mg kg⁻¹) has exceeded the allowable limit in the soil (1.0 mg kg⁻¹), and concern is increasing about the potential harm to farmland soil. Four treatments (AT₀, AT₆, AT₁₀, AT₁₆) were established to reveal the effects of the long-term application of atrazine on soil health. The results showed a nonlinear regulation of the atrazine residue concentrations in the four treatments. The highest concentration of atrazine residue was in AT₆, at 167 mg kg⁻¹, and the lowest concentration of atrazine residue was in AT₁₆, at 102 mg kg⁻¹, but there was no significant difference between AT₁₀ and AT₁₆. The soil urease activity decreased significantly with the increase in the years of atrazine application, the saccharase and cellulase activities in the AT₆ were significantly higher than those observed in the other three treatments, the catalase activity gradually decreased with the increase in atrazine application years, and the activity in AT₆ was significantly higher than that in AT₁₆. A total of 238 genera were identified by Illumina MiSeq sequencing, and 28 dominant genera were screened. Atrazine significantly increased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and contributed to the relative abundance of Rubrobacter, Blastococcus, Promicromonospora, Jiangella, Psychroglaciecola and Acetobacteraceae_uncultured, which exhibited significantly higher abundance in AT₁₆ than in AT₀. Although there were atrazine-degrading bacteria in the soil, and the atrazine residue decreased with the increase in application years, the concentration of the atrazine residue was still nearly 100 times higher than the allowable limit in the soil, which is a great threat to the soil health.

The biogeochemical cycling of sulfur in soil is closely associated with the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals; however the influence of sulfur on the behavior of metal-based nanoparticles has not yet been studied. The influence of S fertilizer (S⁰ and Na₂SO₄) applied in paddy soils on CuO NPs behavior in soil pore water was explored in the present study. Synchrotron-based techniques were applied to investigate the migration and speciation transformation of CuO NPs in soil pore water colloids. The application of sulfur fertilizer increased the zeta potential of soil colloids from the rice rhizosphere region and reduced the size of the colloids. Sulfur fertilization decreased the concentration of Cu in soil pore water in the rice rhizosphere region. S⁰ fertilizer reduced the Cu concentration in soil colloids (by 55.8%–73.5%), while Na₂SO₄ increased the Cu concentration in soil colloids (by 173.8%–265.1%). Sulfur fertilization changed the spatial distribution of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in colloids, making these ions more likely to be aggregated on the edges of soil colloids. Speciation transformation of CuO NPs happened during the process of migration. The main Cu speciation in the soil colloids were CuO NPs, Cu-Cysteine, Cu₂S and Cu-Citrate. Sulfur fertilization increased the proportion of Cu₂S (by 40.5%) in soil pore water colloids from the rice rhizosphere region, while the proportion of CuO NPs was reduced (by 18.4%). Sulfur fertilization changed the morphology and elementary composition of colloids in soil pore water, thus influencing the migration of CuO NPs in the soil column through soil colloids.

In the present study, the endocrine toxicity of LCT and PBA was investigated through exposure to Eremias argus for two weeks under environmental relevant concentration. RNA-sequencing identified 4442 and 4653 differentially expressed genes in lizard liver after LCT and PBA exposure. Four differentially expressed genes (hsd17β, ar, sult, ugt) related with hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis were quantified by qPCR. The expression of genes associated with HPG axis in different tissues differed significantly. In LCT treatment group, ar, cyp17 and hsd3β genes involved in testosterone synthesis and transportation were significantly decreased in lizard testes, and the spermatogensis was inhibited in the testes, which indicated the anti-androgenic activity of LCT. After PBA exposure, the genes related with estradiol synthesis, transportation and metabolism, such as hsd17β, erα, ugt in lizard liver were important biomarkers and the significant decrease of estradiol level was highly correlated with hsd17β, erα, ugt gene expressions. The relative high binding affinity of PBA with ERα further demonstrated the anti-estrogenic activity of PBA. Our results elucidate the different toxic mechanism of LCT and PBA on lizard endocrine system at environmental relevant concentration. Pyrethroids metabolism may cause more seriously toxicity rather than detoxification.

Iron plaque (IP) is crucial in mitigating antimony (Sb) uptake and accumulation in rice plants, while, few studies focused on the effect of the iron plaque-associated Sb resistant bacteria on IP and Sb uptake into rice plants. Here, the effect of a Sb resistant bacterium (GenBank accession No. MH345840, with potential of conversion soluble Sb(III) into insoluble Sb₂O₃) on IP and Sb(III)/Sb(V) uptake under hydroponic condition was investigated. The results showed that in the presence of Sb(III), a large quantity of bacterial cells consorted with IP on rice roots, the bacterial inoculum altered the IP fraction distribution without enhancing its amount. However, it reduced Sb(III) uptake into rice roots. On contrary, seldom bacterial cells associated with the IP on rice roots in the presence of the Sb(V), the bacterial inoculum increased the IP amount slightly, and did not decline the Sb(V) uptake into rice roots. It also showed that the bacterial inoculum decreased Sb concentrations in rice shoots greatly in both Sb(III) and Sb(V) supplied treatments.

Many studies show that bisphenol A (BPA) is widespread in human breast milk. However, the occurrence of other bisphenol analogues (BPs), including bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol AF (BPAF), in breast milk is still not well known. In this study, breast milk samples were collected from 190 women in Hangzhou, China, with the aims to characterize the occurrence of BPA, BPS, BPF, and BPAF in these samples and to investigate their effects on postnatal growth of infants through breast milk consumption. BPA (mean 2.5 ng/mL, range < LOD–15 ng/mL) was the most abundant BP in breast milk, followed by BPS (0.19 ng/mL, <LOD–1.3 ng/mL) and BPAF (0.092 ng/mL, <LOD–0.58 ng/mL). BPF was not detected in all breast milk samples. We firstly found that breast milk concentrations of BPA were negatively correlated with infant’s weight or length gain rate. Daily intakes (DIs) of BPs via the consumption of breast milk were calculated for infants, and the mean DI values were 531 ng/kg/day, 53 ng/kg/day, and 24 ng/kg/day for BPA, BPS, and BPAF, respectively. Overall, this study firstly demonstrats that the lactation exposure to BPA through breast milk consumption may affect the postnatal growth of infants.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a series of highly persistent organic pollutants (POPs) ubiquitously distributed in marine environments. As key primary producers, microalgae are the start of PBDEs bioaccumulations and vulnerable to their toxicities. In order to deeply investigate the toxic mechanism of PBDEs on microalgal cells, the occurrence of programmed cell death (PCD) in a model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and its possible mediating mechanism were studied. The results indicated: cell death of T. pseudonana happened under the stress of BDE-47, which was proved to be PCD based on the correlations with three biochemical markers (DNA fragmentation, phosphatidylserine externalization and caspase activity) and three molecular markers [Metacaspase 2 gene (TpMC2), Death-associated protein gene (DAP3) and Death-specific protein 1 gene (TpDSP1)]; Furthermore, the changes of cellular ROS levels were correlated with the PCD markers and the dead cell rates, and the cell membrane and the chloroplast were identified as the major ROS production sites. Therefore, we concluded that PCD might be an important toxic mechanism of PBDEs on microalgal cells, and that chloroplast- and cell membrane-produced ROS was an important signaling molecule to mediate the PCD activation process. Our research firstly indicated microalgal PCD could be induced by PBDEs, and increased our knowledge of the toxic mechanisms by which POPs affect microalgal cells.

Both air pollution and dyslipidemias contributed to large number of deaths and disability-adjusted life lost years. Long-term air pollution exposure was related to changed blood lipids and risk of dyslipidemias. This study was designed to evaluate relationships between air pollutants, blood lipids and prevalence of dyslipidemias in a Chinese rural population exposed to high-level air pollution based on baseline data of The Henan Rural Cohort study. An amount of 39,057 participants from rural areas in China were included. The 3-year average exposure of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2) was estimated by a spatiotemporal model. Logistic and linear regression models were employed to explore relationships between air pollutants, blood lipids (TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C) and prevalence of dyslipidemias. The three-year concentration of PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 was 72.8 ± 2.3 μg/m3, 131.5 ± 5.7 μg/m3and 39.1 ± 3.1 μg/m3, respectively. Overall, increased air pollution exposure was related to increased TC and LDL-C, while decreased TG and HDL-C. Each 1-μg/m3 increment of PM2.5 was related to 0.10% (0.07%–0.19%) increase in TC, 0.63% (0.50%–0.77%) increase in LDL-C, 2.93% (2.70%–3.16%) decrease in TG, 0.49% (0.38%–0.60%) decrease in HDL-C; and 5.7% (95%CI: 3.7%–7.6%), 4.0% (95%CI: 2.1%–6.0%) and 3.8% (95%CI: 2.5%–5.1%) increase in odds for hypercholesterolemia, hyperbetalipoproteinemia and hypoalphalipoproteinemia, respectively. Stronger associations were found in male and older participants. Findings suggest that air pollutants were associated with changed blood lipid levels and higher risk of dyslipidemias among rural population. Male and elder people should pay more attention to personal safety protection.

Zhu, Hongkai | Kannan, Kurunthachalam
The extensive use of melamine and its three derivatives (i.e., ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid) resulted in their widespread occurrence in the environment. Nevertheless, limited information is available on their distribution in the aquatic environment. In this study, concentrations and profiles of melamine and its derivatives were determined in 223 water samples, comprising river water, lake water, seawater, tap water, bottled water, rain water, wastewater, and swimming pool water, collected from New York State, USA. The sum concentrations of melamine and its derivatives (∑₄MELs) decreased in the following order: swimming pool water (median: 1.5 × 10⁷ ng/L) ≫ wastewater (1240) > precipitation (739) > tap water (512) > river water (370) > lake water (347) > seawater (186) > bottled water (98). Cyanuric acid was the major compound, accounting for 60–100% of ∑₄MELs concentrations in swimming pool water, wastewater, precipitation, tap water, seawater, and bottled water, whereas melamine dominated in river and lake water (54–64% of ∑₄MELs). Significant positive correlations (0.499 < R < 0.703, p < 0.002) were found between the concentrations of melamine and atrazine (a triazine herbicide) in surface waters. The geographic distribution in the concentrations of ∑₄MELs in river, lake, and tap water corresponded with the degree of urbanization, suggesting that human activities contribute to the sources melamine and cyanuric acid in the aquatic environments. A preliminary hazard assessment of melamine and cyanuric acid in waters suggested that their ecological or human health risks were minimal. This is the first study to document the occurrence and spatial distribution of melamine and its derivatives in waters from the United States.

The Haihe River Basin is a polluted area affected by the developing industry and intensive agricultural activities in China. Dissolved organic matter (DOC) and light-absorbing characteristics of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) were monitored in different tributaries of China within the Haihe River basin during spring and autumn. The concentration of DOC during spring was higher than during autumn (p < 0.01), and the evaporation was an important factor affecting the concentration of DOC in the basin. By contrast, the proportion of inputs due to terrigenous plants during autumn was higher than during spring. Carbon stable isotope analysis δ¹³C and C: N ratio of DOC, evidenced the inputs of DOC in the Haihe River basin from different sources including sewage, terrestrial plants, soil, and plankton. Isotopic analysis of δ¹³C and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) analysis supported the hypothesis that allochthonous inputs contributed substantially to the inputs of DOC in the Haihe River basin, coming largely from sewage (9.8%–81.2%) and terrestrial plants (13.3%–65.8%). Depending on the source of DOC and contribution, four types with different EEM spectra were set. Type I, river water from sewage (81.2%); Type II, river water with input from terrestrial plants (65.8%); Type III, river water with plankton (36.4%), and Type IV, river water with soil-derived DOC (33.9%). The results demonstrated that the combined methodology using ¹³C stable isotope and EEM-FRI can be used to characterize the components of DOC in river waters. This approach was important for tracking the concentration and composition of DOC in river waters from different input sources and for better understanding concerning the local regulation of the terrestrial carbon cycle.

2020
Shier, Debra M. | Bird, Alicia K. | Wang, Thea B.
Modification of nighttime light levels by artificial illumination (artificial light at night; ALAN) is a rapidly increasing form of human disturbance that affects natural environments worldwide. Light in natural environments influences a variety of physiological and ecological processes directly and indirectly and, as a result, the effects of light pollution on species, communities and ecosystems are emerging as significant. Small prey species may be particularly susceptible to ALAN as it makes them more conspicuous and thus more vulnerable to predation by visually oriented predators. Understanding the effects of disturbance like ALAN is especially important for threatened or endangered species as impacts have the potential to impede recovery, but due to low population numbers inherent to at-risk species, disturbance is rarely studied. The endangered Stephens’ kangaroo rat (SKR), Dipodomys stephensi, is a nocturnal rodent threatened by habitat destruction from urban expansion. The degree to which ALAN impacts their recovery is unknown. In this study, we examined the effects of ALAN on SKR foraging decisions across a gradient of light intensity for two types of ALAN, flood and bug lights (756 vs 300 lumen, respectfully) during full and new moon conditions. We found that ALAN decreased probability of resource patch depletion compared to controls. Moreover, lunar illumination, distance from the light source and light type interacted to alter SKR foraging. Under the new moon, SKR were consistently more likely to deplete patches under control conditions, but there was an increasing probability of patch depletion with distance from the source of artificial light. The full moon dampened SKR foraging activity and the effect of artificial lights. Our study underscores that ALAN reduces habitat suitability, and raises the possibility that ALAN may impede the recovery of at-risk nocturnal rodents.
