The microbiome has been described as an additional host “organ” with well-established beneficial roles. However, the effects of exposures to chemicals on both structure and function of the gut microbiome of fishes are understudied. To determine effects of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a model persistent organic pollutant, on structural shifts of gut microbiome in juvenile fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), fish were exposed ad libitum in the diet to concentrations of 1, 10, 100, or 1000 μg BaP g⁻¹ food, in addition to a vehicle control, for two weeks. To determine the link between exposure to BaP and changes in the microbial community, concentrations of metabolites of BaP were measured in fish bile and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was used to evaluate the microbiome. Exposure to BaP only reduced alpha-diversity at the greatest exposure concentrations. However, it did alter community composition assessed as differential abundance of taxa and reduced network complexity of the microbial community in all exposure groups. Results presented here illustrate that environmentally-relevant concentrations of BaP can alter the diversity of the gut microbiome and community network connectivity.

In Lebanon, previous studies have indicated an onset of cardiovascular diseases 12 years earlier than in other parts of the world, suggesting the presence of additional risk factors specific to Lebanon. Measurements of airborne particles in Lebanon surpass the recommendations of the World Health Organization by over 150%. This study examined the association between obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), assessed by a novel marker calculated from coronary catheterization, and markers of air pollution, specifically polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in a cohort of 258 patients seen at the American University of Beirut Medical Center since 2014. The concentrations of four types of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OHPAHs), 2-OHNAP, 2-OHFLU, 3-OHPHE, and 1-OHPYR, were measured in the urine samples of these patients using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detector. Results showed that the OHPAH concentrations were higher than what was reported in high-income countries and, most notably, the levels for non-smokers in this study were higher than those of smokers and some occupational workers in other countries. This implies that patients were exposed to high levels of PAHs, which originate from combustion sources. In particular, 1-OHPYR showed a significant association with presence of obstructive CAD, even after adjusting for covariates like age, sex, and diabetes. Smokers or not, this association has implications for public health and calls for urgent need to pass regulations to reduce the emissions of PAH sources, such as cars, diesel generators, and incinerators.

Prenatal fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) exposure has been associated with impaired offspring neurodevelopment; however, the association of PM₂.₅ exposure during preconception with offspring’s neurodevelopment and factors responsible for this association are still unclear. This study estimated the associations of PM₂.₅ exposure during preconception and the first trimester with offspring neurodevelopment and evaluated whether maternal thyroid hormones mediate these associations. We recruited 1329 mother-child pairs between 2013 and 2015 in Wuhan, China. PM₂.₅ exposure levels of each woman during the 3 months preconception and the first trimester were estimated using land-use regression models. Offspring neurodevelopment characterized by mental developmental index (MDI) and psychomotor developmental index (PDI) were measured at 24 months of age. Maternal serum levels of free thyroxine (FT3), free triiodothyronine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) during early pregnancy were measured of a subset of the 1329 women (551 women). Generalized estimation equation and general linear regression models were used to estimate the associations between maternal PM₂.₅ exposure, thyroid hormones, and offspring neurodevelopment. After adjusting for potential confounders, we found that either among all participants or the subset, PM₂.₅ exposure during preconception and the first trimester was negatively associated with offspring PDI. Double increment in the first trimester PM₂.₅ exposure was significantly associated with 3.43 and 6.48 points decrease in offspring MDI. In the subset, each doubling of PM₂.₅ exposure during preconception and the first trimester was significantly associated with 7.93 and 8.02 points decrease in maternal FT4 level, respectively. Increased maternal FT4, in turn, was associated with increased PDI (β = 16.69, 95% CI: 5.39, 27.99). About 7.7% (95% CI: 2.0%–19.4%) and 8.6% (95% CI: 3.0%, 22.1%) of the effect of PM₂.₅ exposure during preconception on offspring PDI was mediated through maternal FT4 and the FT4/FT3 ratio, respectively.

Long-range transport (LRT) reportedly carries air pollutants and microorganisms to downwind areas. LRT can be of various types, such as dust storm (DS) and frontal pollution (FP); however, studies comparing their effects on bioaerosols are lacking. This study evaluated the effect of LRT on viral and bacterial concentrations in Northern Taiwan. When LRT occurred and possibly affected Taiwan from August 2013 to April 2014, air samples (before, during, and after LRT) were collected in Cape Fugui (CF, Taiwan’s northernmost point) and National Taiwan University (NTU). Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was applied to quantify influenza A virus. qPCR and qPCR coupled with propidium monoazide were, respectively, used to quantify total and viable bacteria. Types and occurrence of LRT were confirmed according to the changing patterns of meteorological factors and air pollution, air mass sources (HYSPLIT model), and satellite images. Two Asian DS and three FP cases were included in this study. Influenza A virus was detected only on days before and during FP occurred on January 3–5, 2014, with concentrations of 0.87 and 10.19 copies/m³, respectively. For bacteria, the increase in concentrations of total and viable cells during Asian DSs (17–19 and 25–29 November 2013) was found at CF only (from 3.13 to 3.40 and from 2.62 to 2.85 log copies/m³, respectively). However, bacterial levels at NTU and CF both increased during FP and lasted for 2 days after FP. In conclusion, LRT increased the levels of influenza A virus and bacteria in the ambient air of Northern Taiwan, particularly at CF. During and 2 days (at least) after LRT, people should avoid outdoor activities, especially in case of FP.

Carbonaceous particles play an important role in climate change, and an increase in their emission and deposition causes glacier melting in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau (HTP). This implies that studying their basic characteristics is crucial for a better understanding of the climate forcing observed in this area. Thus, we investigated characteristics of carbonaceous particles at a typical remote site of southeastern HTP. Organic carbon and elemental carbon concentrations at this study site were 1.86 ± 0.84 and 0.18 ± 0.09 μg m⁻³, respectively, which are much lower than those reported for other frequently monitored stations in the same region. Thus, these values reflect the background characteristics of the study site. Additionally, the absorption coefficient per mass (α/ρ) of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) at 365 nm was 0.60 ± 0.19 m² g⁻¹, with the highest and lowest values corresponding to the winter and monsoon seasons, respectively. Multi-dimensional fluorescence analysis showed that the WSOC consisted of approximately 37% and 63% protein and humic-like components, respectively, and the latter was identified as the component that primarily determined the light absorption ability of the WSOC, which also showed a significant relationship with some major ions, including SO²⁻₄, K⁺, and Ca²⁺, indicating that combustion activities as well as mineral dust were two important contributors to WSOC at the study site.

A large amount of tetracycline (TC) persists in water, soil, food, and feed due to the overuse of antibiotics, causing serious environmental problems such as damage to ecosystems and posing risks to human health. Thus, there is an urgent need to find a method to detect TC that is practical, rapid, sensitive, and offers ready visualization of TC levels so that adequate remediation measures can be immediately implemented. Herein, we report a fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode nanosensor for the detection of TC based on reduced state carbon dots (r-CDs). In the presence of TC, the emission fluorescence of r-CDs was quenched by the Förster resonance energy transfer mechanism to achieve high-sensitivity detection of TC with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.73 nM. Moreover, TC was also detected by r-CDs via a noticeable color change of the solution (from colorless to red) with the naked eye, having an LOD of 0.46 μM. Furthermore, r-CDs have excellent selectivity and sensitivity in detecting TC in wastewater, and therefore, have practical applications in wastewater treatment. The fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode proposed in this work may offer a unique idea for the detection of TC, with great prospects for environmental wastewater applications.

Forest fires significantly affect the wildlife, vegetation, composition and structure of the forests. This study explores the potential of partially burnt wood recovered in the aftermath of a recent Canadian forest fire incident as a feedstock for generating hydrogen-rich syngas through hydrothermal gasification. Partially burnt wood was gasified in hydrothermal conditions to study the influence of process temperature (300–500 °C), residence time (15–45 min), feed concentration (10–20 wt%) and biomass particle size (0.13 mm and 0.8 mm) using the statistical Taguchi method. Maximum hydrogen yield and total gas yield of 5.26 mmol/g and 11.88 mmol/g, respectively were obtained under optimized process conditions at 500 °C in 45 min with 10 wt% feed concentration using biomass particle size of 0.13 mm. The results from the mean of hydrogen yield show that the contribution of each experimental factors was in the order of temperature > feed concentration > residence time > biomass particle size. Other gaseous products obtained at optimum conditions include CO₂ (3.43 mmol/g), CH₄ (3.13 mmol/g) and C₂–C₄ hydrocarbons (0.06 mmol/g).

The Yellow River is the second largest river in China. Carbon transport by the Yellow River has significant influence on riverine carbon cycles in Asia. During the wet season, the riverine carbon was mainly found in dissolved form, i.e., dissolved organic carbon (DOC), along the entire course of the river. The distinct spatial variations of DOC concentration were observed at different reaches of the mainstream (p < 0.01), while the highest mean DOC concentration was generally observed at midstream (4.13 ± 0.91 mg/L). Carbon stable isotope analysis δ¹³C and C: N ratio of DOC, evidenced the sources of DOC in headwater and upstream were primarily the terrestrial plants (94% and 61%), but it was changed to soil organic matter (SOM) in mid- and downstream (36% and 37%), and the contribution of sewage to DOC were also increased to 17% and 18%. In the whole mainstream of the Yellow River, water temperature (WT) had a significant impact on DOC concentration, and it could explain 67% of the DOC variance. However, in a large catchment, the driving mechanisms on the DOC variations in headwaters will not necessarily be those controlling DOC trends in downstream. The study firstly quantified, in headwater and upstream, the natural factors explained as much as 65% and 73% of the DOC variations, respectively. In mid- and downstream areas, DOC was significantly influenced by the amount of wastewater discharged by the industry and the use of chemical fertilizers (p < 0.05). These findings may facilitate a better assessment of global riverine carbon cycling and may help to reveal the importance of the balance between development and environmental sustainability with the changing DOC transport features in the Yellow River due to human disturbances.

The spatial distributions, fluxes, and environmental effects of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were investigated in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) in spring. The average concentrations of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene, propylene and isoprene in the seawater were 18.1 ± 6.4, 15.4 ± 4.7, 6.8 ± 2.9, 6.4 ± 3.2, 67.1 ± 26.7, 20.5 ± 8.7 and 17.1 ± 11.1 pmol L⁻¹, respectively. The alkenes in the surface seawater were more abundant than their saturated homologs and NMHCs concentrations (with the exception of isoprene) decreased with carbon number. The spatial variations of isoprene were consistent with the distributions of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Nitzschia mainly contributed to the production of isoprene, while the others’ distributions might be related to their photochemical production. Observations in atmospheric NMHCs indicated alkanes in the marine atmosphere decreased from inshore to offshore due to influence of the continental emissions, while alkenes were largely derived from the oceanic source. In addition, no apparent diurnal discrepancy of atmospheric NMHCs (except for isoprene) were found between daytime and night. As the main sink of NMHCs in seawater, the average sea-to-air fluxes of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene and propylene were 31.70, 29.75, 18.49, 15.89, 239.6, 67.94 and 52.41 nmol m⁻² d⁻¹, respectively. The average annual emissions of isoprene accounted for 0.1–1.3% of the global ocean emissions, which indicated that the coastal and shelf areas might be significant sources of isoprene. Furthermore, this study represents the first effort to estimate the environmental effects caused by NMHCs over the YS and the ECS and the results demonstrated contributions of alkanes to ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were lower than those of the alkenes and the largest contributor was isoprene.
