Tissue distribution and trophic magnification of trace elements in typical marine mammals in Bohai and north Yellow Seas

A total of 20 stranded spotted seals (Phoca largha) and 9 stranded minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) were collected from Liaodong Bay and the northern part of the Yellow Sea to investigate the tissue distribution (liver, kidney, heart, lung, and muscle), risk, and trophic magnification of 13 trace elements (TEs, Hg, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn, V, Zn). The 13 TEs were all detected in all spotted seal and minke whale tissue samples, with mean concentrations ranging from 0.041 to 136.3 mg kg⁻¹ dry weight (dw) and 0.022 to 152.6 mg kg⁻¹ dw, respectively. Zn was the dominant contaminant in all tissues for both spotted seals and minke whales. There was tissue-specific distribution of TEs in both marine mammals, and the TEs tended to accumulate in internal organs. Significant positive correlations were found in the body length of the spotted seals and minke whales among some of the TEs, especially for Cd in the internal organs. Gender-dependent distribution of the TEs was not obtained for the spotted seal. Ecological risk evaluation for spotted seals and minke whales suggested that greater concern should be given to Hg, As, and Se. Based on the TE concentrations detected in this study and trophic levels determined by stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes, trophic level-associated biodilution was obtained for As, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Pb, Se, Sn, and V in the spotted seal, while Zn displayed a significant biomagnification trend with increasing trophic levels. In the case of the minke whale, As, Cd, Co, Mn, Pb, Se, and V displayed significant biomagnification trends with increasing trophic levels.

Green macroalgal blooms caused by Ulva species have influenced the Shandong Province for 15 consecutive years since 2007, leading to serious damage to the marine environment. Great biomasses of attached Ulva prolifera on Neopyropia aquaculture rafts in the Yellow Sea were considered as sources of blooms. However, it is still unclear whether U. prolifera could survive and settle in the Qingdao coastal environment, Shandong, thus leading to local Ulva blooms in the future. In this research, sampling of Ulva macroalgae in seven Portunus trituberculatus aquaculture ponds along the coast of Qingdao was conducted on August 21, 2019. In total, 24 samples collected from the ponds were analyzed through methods of molecular biological identification (ITS, 5S, and rps2-trnL sequences) and genetic analysis. All the aquaculture ponds contained large amounts of floating Ulva macroalgae, which consisted of three species: U. prolifera, Ulva meridionalis, and Ulva pertusa. Among these species, U. meridionalis, which is usually found in southern Japan, also causes the green tide. In addition, all Ulva macroalgae floated on the surfaces of aquaculture ponds, and were discarded into the local coastal area by aquaculturist. This research raised our awareness of the importance of controlling the spread of the green tide related macroalgae.

The concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were measured in muscle tissue of Coryphaena hippurus captured in the southern Gulf of California to determine inter-annual variations and their relation with environmental parameters for the period 2006–2015; additionally, health risk to consumers was assessed according to levels of studied elements and rate of fish consumption in northwest Mexico. During 2014 and 2015 the levels of As, Cd, Cu, and Zn were significantly lower than the rest of the years; in the case of As, it was also significantly lower in 2010. Oceanic Niño Index was negatively correlated with Zn concentrations in fish, while sea surface temperature was negatively correlated with Zn, Pb and Cd concentrations in dolphinfish. The simultaneous occurrence of the analyzed elements in muscle of dolphinfish indicated that health effects on consumers are not likely to occur; nevertheless, fishermen with elevated fish consumption might be at risk.

Microplastics have been found in fish, but most studies have focused on the digestive system without considering additional organs. Herein, the objective was to assess the presence of microplastics in internal organs (gills, guts, kidney, heart) of the Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) captured of the coast of Portugal (Northeast Atlantic Ocean). Suspected microplastics were present in all organs, with particles of larger size (i.e., equivalent diameter) found in the gut and those of lower size in the heart and its luminal blood. Suspected microplastics of 1–10 μm were the most abundant (65.4%), more likely to translocate, owing to their minute size, but more difficult to properly characterize. These results highlight the need to expand the analytical work on organs and tissues for assessing microplastics in organisms, but also emphasize the actual need for developing analytical methods that allow for an accurate isolation, identification, and characterization of microplastics in biota.

We studied the concentrations of terrestrial and anthropogenic radionuclides in seawater and shore sediment/sand of three selected regions; Khafji, Safaniyah and Menifah along the Saudi Arabian Gulf coast. The mean activity concentrations of the ²²⁸Ra, ²²⁶Ra, and ⁴⁰K in the analyzed sand samples are 5.9, 3.5 and 113.5 Bq/kg, and the respective values in seawater samples are 1.6, 0.8 and 10.4 Bq/L. All data show lower than the corresponding UNSCEAR (2000) reported world average values of 35, 30 and 400 Bq/kg for soil matrix. A few relevant radiological hazards were quantified by the estimation of the absorbed dose rate, and the results are compared with the prescribed limits set by international regulatory bodies. Measured data indicates that the studied coastal regions pose a negligible radiological hazards to the public, and show an insignificant radioactive loading to this coastal region by the Busher nuclear power plant.

The ingestion of microplastics (MPs - plastic particles <5 mm) by planktivorous organisms represents a significant threat to marine food webs. To investigate how seasonality might affect plastic intake in oceanic islands' ecosystems, relative abundances and composition of MPs and mesozooplankton samples collected off Madeira Island (NE Atlantic) between February 2019 and January 2020 were analysed. MPs were found in all samples, with fibres accounting for 89 % of the particles. MPs and zooplankton mean abundance was 0.262 items/m³ and 18.137 individuals/m³, respectively. Their monthly variations follow the seasonal fluctuation of environmental parameters, such as currents, chlorophyll-a concentration, sea surface temperature and precipitation intensity. A higher MPs/zooplankton ratio was recorded in the warm season (May-Oct), reaching 0.068 items/individual when considering large-sized particles (1000–5000 μm). This is the first study to assess the seasonal variability of MPs in an oceanic island system providing essential information respecting its ecological impact in pelagic environments.

Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) is a participatory modelling tool used to explore complex systems by facilitating interdisciplinary cooperation and integrating a variety of knowledge systems. Here FCM was used to explore marine microfiber pollution. Through individual interviews with representatives from the research, industry, water and environmental sectors, five stakeholder FCMs were developed and used to produce an aggregated community FCM in a stakeholder workshop. Stakeholder FCMs and the revised community FCM were used to compute how the modelled system reacted to changes under two scenarios developed during the stakeholder workshop; (i) Green Shift and (ii) increased textile consumption and production. Significant differences were observed in scenario results from the stakeholder-based models and the community-based model. For societal challenges characterized by unknowns around the problem and potential solutions, inclusion of a variety of knowledge systems through FCM and deliberation processes contribute to a more holistic picture of the system and its uncertainties.

The water quality of the northern Caspian Sea has not been well-known, and its contamination can adversely affect the health of swimmers and seashore residents. The study sought to determine the contamination state of the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan and quantify human health risks coming from the existing heavy metals concentration. The Caspian Sea was found to be “fairly to marginally” contaminated (24 < CCME-WQI < 64), with Cd influencing the index significantly. Concentrations of Cd and Pb increase over time (seasonal Kendall test, p-values = 2–4 %) in sites near oil fields and ports, suggesting the significant role of anthropogenic sources in causing diverse pollution events. Pb demonstrated the highest variability and number of outliers (4.3 % of all samples with coefficients of variation reaching up to 175 %). The principal component analysis further revealed that various discharges from oilfields and upstream transport could contribute to the contamination by heavy metals and their concentrations. Contamination is associated with up to 6 % cancer risk for adults. The long exposure duration of swimmers in water increases risks by up to 18 %, indicating the local population is at a higher risk. In conclusion, statistical tests and analysis indicate the presence of anthropogenic sources, and risk assessment reveals swimming can contribute to cancer risk.

The concentrations of 13 trace elements were determined in 1032 muscles of 54 small-scale fisheries species collected from the Seychelles waters between 2013 and 2019. Overall, profiles were dominated by zinc (Zn) > arsenic (As) > iron (Fe) > copper (Cu) > selenium (Se), with the spiny lobsters, spanner crab and octopus exhibiting the highest levels of As, Cu and Zn while fish had higher Fe concentrations. Both taxonomy-dependent processes and ecological factors explained the interspecific differences of trace element profiles observed. A benefit-risk assessment revealed that crustaceans and cephalopods were good sources of Cu and Zn. One portion of any fish could provide 30–100 % of daily Se needs, and one portion of demersal and pelagic teleost fish could bring 5–20 % of Cu, Fe and Zn needs, especially for young adult and adult women. Finally, our analysis showed that there was very low health risks associated with small-scale fisheries consumption for the Seychelles population.

The increasing pollution of aquatic environments due to old and emerging contaminants requires the development of integrative methods for exposure assessment. Internal concentrations are a reliable way to estimate total exposure of contaminants originated from different routes (water, sediment, and food). We developed a protocol to evaluate the concentration of a dye, C.I. Disperse Red 1, in the hemolymph of Parhyale hawaiensis, a marine amphipod. LOD and LOQ were satisfactory to detect the dye in all hemolymph samples. The concentration detected in the hemolymph varied related to exposure time and dye concentration (0.003 to 0.086 μg mL⁻¹). Polynomial regression model was the best fit. The protocol was reliable to detect and quantify dye exposure in marine amphipods and can be considered for future assessments of estuarine and marine regions under the influence of dye processing plants. The method possibly can be easily adapted to other amphipods and other azo dyes.
