The distribution of sediment bacterial community in mangroves across China was governed by geographic location and eutrophication Texte intégral

Bacterial community is an important component of mangrove ecosystem and can participate in the cycling of elements and promote plant growth. However, the biogeographic distribution pattern of mangrove bacterial community and the associated factors remain poorly known. The present study explored the biogeographic distribution of sediment bacterial community in six mangroves across China. At each mangrove, sediments were collected from both Avicennia marina-planted zones and intertidal mudflats. The community abundance, richness, diversity and structure of sediment bacteria differed greatly among mangrove wetlands. Plantation showed a positive influence on sediment bacterial abundance, richness and diversity. Proteobacteria was the largest bacterial phylum in sediments. The biogeographic distribution of bacterial community in mangroves across China was driven by the variables associated with the wetland trophic status as well as other physicochemical factors (e.g., salinity).

The sorption of 5 Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCs) [3,6-dibromocarbazole (3,6-BCZ), 3,6-dichlorocarbazole (3,6-CCZ), 3,6-diiodocarbazole (3,6-ICZ), 2,7-dibromocarbazole (2,7-BCZ) and 3-bromocarbazole (3-BCZ)] on to three microplastics [polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)] in a simulated seawater system are studied. Sorption isotherms demonstrated that PVC had the maximum sorption capacity, which can be attributed to polar-polar interaction. The sorption kinetics model showed that the sorption process was controlled by both intraparticle and film diffusion. The sorption of PHCs to microplastics was significantly influenced by temperature, the sorption capacity first increased gradually and then decreased with the increasing temperature. Increasing the salinity decreased the sorption of PHCs onto PP, PE, PVC microplastics. Our results indicated that all three kinds of microplastics can serve as carriers for PHCs in the aquatic environment, which put marine ecosystems at higher risks.

The Adriatic Sea, a semi-enclosed and vulnerable environment, deserves special attention regarding the risk of introducing Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens via ships' ballast water as new species findings occur at an alarming rate. This species introduction vector was addressed with the 2004 International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, which entered into force in 2017. The efficient implementation of this convention calls for Adriatic States' cooperation on environmental specifics that have not been dealt with neither by national nor by international measures yet. Based on legal and institutional data gathered, and considering the regional maritime traffic and environmental specifics, this paper reveals that the integration of current environmental law commitments as well as a better dialogue between public institutions from shipping and environmental sectors may foster the implementation of ballast water management obligations through appropriate Adriatic States' cooperation.

Concentrations, spatial distribution and sources of aliphatic hydrocarbons (AH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in surface seawater of the Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic. This area is one of the most industrialized and urbanized areas in the northern Adriatic with intense maritime traffic. The surface seawater samples were collected at 31 sites and total hydrocarbon concentrations were determined. In general, concentrations (0.1 to 43.2 μg l⁻¹, mean 4.8 μg l⁻¹, Chrysene equivalents) were higher in summer. Concentrations of total aliphatic hydrocarbons were from 17.2 to 2326.5 μg l⁻¹ (mean 543.3 μg l⁻¹). The major component was the unresolved complex mixture (UCM), comprising from 78% to 97% of the total aliphatic hydrocarbons. Total PAH concentrations varied from 89 ng l⁻¹ to 294 ng l⁻¹ (mean 179 ng l⁻¹). The most contaminated sites were the marina of San Giusto and the municipal harbor of Piran.Different evaluation indeces were applied to determine the origin of hydrocarbons. The prevailing origin of aliphatic hydrocarbons is petrogenic, with the significant contribution of the biogenic at some sites. The results presented indicate the fresh inputs of hydrocarbons, which are subject to intense degradation processes. The PAH group profile showed the predominance of 2–3 ring PAHs. PAHs were of mixed origin with more pronounced petrogenic origin, presumably due to oil spills from ships and boats. The presence of a relatively high content of perylene in seawater is an indication of its terrestrial input.According to the presented results and compared to results from different areas worldwide, the seawater in the Gulf of Trieste can still be considered slightly to moderately polluted with PAHs.

Glassfish, Ambassis dussumieri (Cuvier, 1828), was used as a sentinel species to investigate the effects of the ingestion of environmentally relevant microplastic concentrations on juvenile fish growth and survival. Both virgin plastic and plastic collected from an urban harbour were fed to small juvenile fish daily for 95 days. Fish standard length, body depth and mass were recorded at intervals of 20 days, while survival was continuously recorded. All fish were fed tropical flakes, measured at 1.7% of the body mass per tank. Overall, fish in in plastic treatments grew less in body length and body depth compared to those control treatments. Fish mass was also lower in the virgin plastic treatment than control fish; however, the growth in mass was not significantly lower than fish in the harbour plastic treatment. The survival probability of fish in both plastic fed treatments was also lower than fish in controls.

In this study, the spatial distribution and forms of nitrogen in sediment cores collected from the Pearl River Estuary were analyzed. Exchangeable nitrogen (Nₑₓ) comprised only a small proportion of total nitrogen (Nₜₒₜ), with a mean of 3.54% in the sediment cores. NH₄⁺ was the main form of Nₑₓ. No obvious change was observed in the vertical content of fixed ammonia (Nfᵢₓ) in the sediments, and the mean Nfᵢₓ in all five sediment cores was 141.23 mg·kg⁻¹. The organic nitrogen (Nₒᵣg), strongly related to organic carbon (Cₒᵣg), was the main form in Nₜₒₜ. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen in sediment pore water was much lower than that in estuarine water and no significant variation was observed from upstream to downstream. Our results indicated that most nitrogen deposited on surface sediments from overlying water was rapidly removed by a series of microbial processes, reducing the extent of nitrogen returning to overlying waters.

Floating marine litter is known to be currently a widespread pollution problem, especially in the Mediterranean basin, but records on the levels of floating debris in the eastern part are less known. By using an observation platform (32 days, 137 transects, 1784 km), this study provides evidence of a high amount of floating debris in the Levantine sub-basin, within the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The density of floating litter varied between 18 and 1593 items km⁻² (average 232 ± 325 items km⁻²), and small plastic debris accounted for >90% of the items surveyed. These values tend to be higher than densities reported for the central and western Mediterranean areas, which may be related to the circulation patterns and inputs from coastal sources. Significant correlations of floating macro litter density with wind force and sea state were found, thus strengthening the need to standardise protocols (including oceanographic variables) of visual surveys of floating debris.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in marine molluscs could be a serious threat to the health of consumers; however, studies on this subject are limited. To understand this threat, the indicator PCBs (PCB-28, PCB-52, PCB-101, PCB-118, PCB-138, PCB-153 and PCB-180) found in six different kinds of molluscs were determined, and the associated cancer risk for consumers that intake these indicator PCBs via molluscs was assessed. The total concentrations of PCBs in molluscs ranged from 17.51 to 47.43 ng/g (d.w.). The order of contamination levels for indicator PCBs in molluscs was Perna viridis > Ruditapes philippinarum > Crassostrea gigas > Mimachlamys nobilis > Glossaulax didyma > Anadara antiquata. Tri-, tetra- and penta-PCBs were the dominant congeners in molluscs from Haikou City. Tetra-PCBs are the most common PCB, accounting for 38.49% of total PCBs. Compared with previous global studies on PCBs in molluscs, the pollution level of indicator PCBs in the molluscs from Haikou City was lower than most of reports in Europe and China, but higher than those from France and Korea, suggesting a moderate pollution level. The 50% and 95% cancer risks of indicator PCBs in molluscs for adult consumers were 2.75 × 10−7 and 4.32 × 10−7, indicating that the cancer risk was at an acceptable level. Since the dioxin like-PCBs were not analyzed in this study, the cancer risk of PCBs to human health might be underestimated; therefore, more studies on PCB pollution in molluscs are required.

Sediments of Yellow Sea dumping sites (YSDS) collected in 2015 were analyzed using the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method to assess the contamination and potential risk to the environment. Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn exhibited the most dominant residual fraction, whereas Cd was mostly in the exchangeable fraction and Pb in the reducible fraction. Cr contains a significant amount of oxidizable fraction in the dumping area due to the dumping of tannery sludge with high concentrations of Cr, mainly in the organic matter-bound form. The global contamination factor (GCF) showed that high non-residual fractions of Cd and Pb contributed considerably to contamination. Nevertheless, modified potential ecological risk index (MRI) suggested low ecological risk for metals in YSDS because of the low total content of Cd and the small mobile fraction of other metals.

Cleaning is a fundamental concern of beach managers in many destinations as well as an important requirement in beach quality awards. However, it has been largely neglected in the literature. This paper provides an overview of empirical studies on beach cleaning and analyzes cleaning-related requirements of 11 beach awards that generate controversy in the literature. This study comments on key aspects of beach cleaning, resolves various misconceptions, and provides new perspectives by integrating related topics drawn from a wide range of literature. The arguments based on both the ecological and tourism managerial perspectives are presented, indicating the gaps and proposing research solutions. The paper calls for empirical studies with regard to the efficiency of different cleaning approaches on beaches with varying levels of use intensity and for methodological designs that separate the impacts of mechanical grooming from those of trampling, dune destruction, shore armoring, artificial lighting, among others.
