The toxic sensitivity in different physiological levels of chromium (Cr) contaminated soils with environmentally equivalent concentrations (EEC) was fully unknown. The earthworm Eisenia fetida was exposed to a Cr-contaminated soil at the EEC level (referred to as Cr-CS) to characterize the induced toxicity at the whole body, organ, tissue, subcellular structure and metabolic levels. The results showed that the survival rate, weight and biodiversity of the gut microorganisms (organ) had no significant difference (p > 0.05) between control and Cr-CS groups. Qualitative histopathological and subcellular evaluations from morphology showed earthworms obvious injuries. The organelle injuries combined with the metabolic changes provided additional evidence that the Cr-CS damaged the nucleus and probably disturbed the nucleic acid metabolism of earthworms. 2-hexyl-5-ethyl-3-furansulfonate, dimethylglycine, betaine and scyllo-inositol were sensitive and relatively quantitative metabolites that were recommended as potential biomarkers for Cr-CS based on their significant weights in the multivariate analysis model. In addition, the relative abundance of Burkholderiaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Microscillaceae of the earthworm guts in the Cr-CS group significantly increased, particularly for Burkholderiaceae (increased by 13.1%), while that of Aeromonadaceae significantly decreased by 5.6% in contrast with the control group. These results provided new insights into our understanding of the toxic effects of the EEC level of Cr contaminated soil from different physiological levels of earthworms and extend our knowledge on the composition and sensitivity of the earthworm gut microbiota in Cr contaminated soil ecosystems. Furthermore, these toxic responses from gut microorganisms to metabolites of earthworms provided important data to improve the adverse outcome pathway and toxic mechanism of the Cr-CS if the earthworm genomics and proteomics would be also gained in the future.

Various crustaceans are farmed using aquaculture, and food deprivation or fasting can occur due to changing of environmental or management strategies. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying responses to starvation in crustaceans remain unclear. To address this, 12 hepatopancreas transcriptomes were compared for oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense) from four fasting stages (0, 7, 14 and 21 d). Gene Ontology functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes were subsequently performed. During the early stages of starvation (0–7 d), drug metabolism via the cytochrome P450 pathway and metabolism of xenobiotics by the cytochrome P450 pathway were enriched, suggesting that they metabolised compounds generated under starvation stress. As starvation proceeded (7–14 d), the retinol (vitamin A) metabolism pathway was activated, based on three up-regulated genes (CYP3, ADH and UGT), along with the two p450 pathways. Meanwhile, vitamin A was gradually consumed. As acute starvation was reached (14–21 d), vitamin A deficiency decreased the mRNA expression levels of IGF-I that is involved in the mTOR signalling pathway, which ultimately affected the growth and development of M. nipponense. Our results implicate drug/xenobiotic metabolism by cytochrome P450s in adaptation to starvation stress. Furthermore, metabolic cascades (CYP and retinol pathways) and growth (mTOR signalling) pathways are clearly triggered in crustaceans during starvation. The findings expand our understanding of the genes associated with hepatopancreas functioning in M. nipponense, and the underlying molecular mechanisms that govern the responses of crustaceans to starvation stress.

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from flue gas lead to a series of environmental problems. Biological removal of Nitrogen oxide (NOx) from flue gas by microalgae is a potential approach for reducing the problems caused by these emissions. However, few microalgal strains are reported to remove NOx from flue gas. Here, a microalga strain PF3 (identified as Scenedesmus obliquus), which can remove NOx and fix CO₂ from flue gas is isolated. The tolerance of Scenedesmus obliquus PF3 to CO₂, NO, SO₂ and its adaptabilities to environmental factors (pH and temperature), and its performance in the removal of NO and CO₂ are investigated. Scenedesmus obliquus PF3 showed biomass accumulation when sparged with 15% CO₂ or 500 ppm NO or 50 ppm SO₂, and bisulfite less than 2 mM showed no toxicity to Scenedesmus obliquus PF3. Additionally, PF3 grew well in a wide range of pH and temperatures from 4.5 to 10.5 and 15 °C–30 °C, respectively. When sparged with simulated flue gas (100 ppm NO, 10% CO₂, (N₂ as balance gas)), the microalgae culture system removed NO and CO₂ at a rate of 2.86 ± 0.23 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹ and 1.48 ± 0.12 g L⁻¹ d⁻¹, respectively, where up to 96.9 ± 0.03% (2.77 ± 0.08 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹) and 87.7 ± 6.22% (1.29 ± 0.01 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹) of the removed NO and CO₂, respectively, were assimilated in algal biomass. These results suggest that Scenedesmus obliquus PF3 is a promising candidate for NOx removal and carbon fixation of flue gas.

To mitigate severe wintertime pollution events in Western China, identifying the source of atmospheric fine particles with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) is a crucial step. In this study, we first analyzed the meteorological and emission factors that caused a considerable increase in the PM2.5 concentration in December 2016. This severe pollution episode was found to be related with unfavorable meteorological conditions and increased residential emissions. The WRF-Chem simulations were used to calculate the residential contribution to PM2.5 through a hybrid source apportionment method. From the validation that used grid data and in situ observations in terms of meteorological elements, PM2.5 and its compounds, the simulated results indicated that the residential sector was the largest single contributor to the PM2.5 concentration (60.2%), because of its predominant contributions to black carbon (BC, 62.1%) and primary organic aerosol (POA, 86.5%), with these two primary components accounting for 70.7% of the PM2.5 mass. Compared with the remote background (RB) region covering the central part of the Tibetan Plateau, the residential sector contributed 11.3% more to PM2.5 in the highly populated mega-city (HM) region, including the Sichuan and Guanzhong Basins, due to greater contribution to the concentrations of primary PM2.5 components. As the main emission source of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), the industrial sector was the second largest contributor to the PM2.5 concentration in the HM region. However, in the RB region, the dominating emissions of NOx, SOA, and BC were from the transport sector; thus, it was the next largest contributor to total PM2.5. An evaluation of the emission control experiment suggested that mitigation strategies that reduce emissions from residential sources can effectively reduce the PM2.5 concentration during heavy pollution periods.

The laboratory reproduction test with the predatory mite Hypoaspis aculeifer is currently a mandatory test in the new EU data requirements for prospective environmental risk assessment of Plant Protection Products (PPPs). However, the low sensitivity often shown by this mite towards PPPs, when compared to other invertebrates (namely Folsomia candida and Eisenia fetida), makes the test with this species not very useful in the lower tier test battery. However, the current test protocol only considers exposure to contaminants via contaminated soil, disregarding exposure via contaminated food and does not take into account the fact that H. aculeifer is a predatory species. Therefore, through this protocol, the toxicity of contaminants to soil mites might be underestimated and, thus, an adaptation of the test performance, by including exposure via contaminated food, may be necessary. With this aim, two reproduction tests with H. aculeifer were performed using copper chloride as model substance, artificial soil as test substrate and cheese mites as food. The OECD guideline was followed but, while in one test cheese mites from normal laboratory breeding cultures (clean prey mites) were provided, in the other test, cheese mites previously exposed to copper (Cu pre-exposed prey mites) were provided. Predatory mites were affected at lower concentrations in tests using Cu pre-exposed prey compared to test with clean-prey (NOEC = 1225 and 1508 mg kg⁻¹ and EC₁₀ = 1204 and 1903 mg kg⁻¹ using Cu pre-exposed and clean prey, respectively). However, this higher sensitivity was not detected by EC₅₀ values (EC₅₀ = 2634 and 2814 mg kg⁻¹ using Cu pre-exposed and clean prey, respectively). Further tests are needed in order to (i) investigate the relevance of oral exposure to different PPPs, (ii) optimize the contamination of prey mites according to the chemical properties of each substance and (iii) substantiate a proposal to adapt the standard protocol.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is everywhere. In terrestrial environments, microfibres (MFs) generated from textile laundering are believed to form a significant component of MPs entering soils, mainly through sewage sludge and compost applications. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of MFs on a keystone soil organism. We exposed the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris to soil with polyester MFs incorporated at rates of 0, 0.1 and 1.0 %w/w MF for a period of 35 days (in the dark at 15 °C; n = 4 for each treatment). Dried plant litter was applied at the soil surface as a food source for the earthworms. We assessed earthworm vitality through mortality, weight change, depurate production and MF avoidance testing. In addition, we measured stress biomarker responses via the expression of metallothionein-2 (mt-2), heat shock protein (hsp70) and superoxide dismutase (sod-1). Our results showed that exposure and ingestion of MFs (as evidenced by subsequent retrieval of MFs within earthworm depurates) were not lethal to earthworms, nor did earthworms actively avoid MFs. However, earthworms in the MF1.0% treatment showed a 1.5-fold lower cast production, a 24.3-fold increase in expression of mt-2 (p < 0.001) and a 9.9-fold decline in hsp70 expression (p < 0.001). Further analysis of soil and MF samples indicated that metal content was not a contributor to the biomarker results. Given that burrowing and feeding behaviour, as well as molecular genetic biomarkers, were modulated in earthworms exposed to MFs, our study highlights potential implications for soil ecosystem processes due to MF contamination.

In this study, a series of BUC-21/titanate nanotube (BT-X) composites were facilely fabricated via ball-milling of 2-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) BUC-21 and titanate nanotubes (TNTs). The BT-X composites were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–visible diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Both the photocatalytic reduction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and adsorptive removal of formed Cr(III) of BT-X composites were systematically investigated under different conditions including pH values and co-existing inorganic ions. It was found that BUC-21 (100 mg)/TNTs (100 mg) (BT-1) composites demonstrate remarkable ability of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and adsorptive Cr(III) removal, as well as good reusability and stability. It is believed that the introduction of TNTs could capture the formed Cr(III) from the surface of BUC-21, which provided more active sites exposed to enhance the Cr(VI) reduction.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), enter into the marine ecosystem, raising questions on possible adverse effects caused to the health of marine organisms and especially of top predators. Thus, there is an urge to assess the occurrence and the tissue distribution of PFASs in apex predators. To this end, the current study examines concentrations and distribution of 15 PFASs among 85 samples of different tissues from 9 shark and ray species collected in Greece. The results showed a similar PFAS pattern among the different tissues, with long carbon chain PFASs being the most frequently detected compounds. PFTrDA was the most predominant compound in terms of concentration and frequency of detection, followed by PFUnDA and PFOS. PFTrDA concentrations ranged between < LOQ and 27.1 ng/g ww, while PFUnDA and PFOS levels ranged from <LOQ to 16.0 and < LOQ to 21.6 ng/g ww, respectively. Regarding their frequency of detection, PFTrDA and PFUnDA were detected in 98% and 91% of the samples, respectively, while PFOS was detected in 79%. ΣPFAS concentrations in each analysed tissue ranged from 0.3 to 85 ng/g ww, with the latter being detected in the liver of angular roughshark (Oxynotus centrina). On average, PFASs were found to be accumulated in tissues in the following order: gonads > heart > liver ≈ gills > muscle. Relative contribution (%) of individual compounds to ΣPFAS concentration varied among the different shark tissues, and also among the different shark species. No correlation between PFASs levels in tissues and sharks’ gender, length and geographical origin was observed.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), one of the most widely used plasticizers, is a known environmental endocrine disruptor that impairs male and female fertility. In this study, oral administration of DBP was given to pregnant mice on 14.5 days post coitus (dpc) for 3 days; and additionally, DBP was added into the culture of 14.5 dpc fetal ovaries for 3 days. DBP exposure during gestation disturbed the progression of meiotic prophase I of mouse oocytes, specifically from the zygotene to pachytene stages. Meanwhile, the DBP-exposed pachytene oocytes showed increased homologous recombination sites and unrepaired DNA damage. Furthermore, DBP caused DNA damage by increasing oxidative stress, decreased the expression of multiple critical meiotic regulators, and consequently induced oocyte apoptosis. Moreover, the effect of DBP on meiosis I prophase involved estrogen receptors α and β. Collectively, these results demonstrated a set of meiotic defects in DBP-exposed fetal oocytes. As aberrations in homologous recombination can result in aneuploid gametes and embryos, this study provides new support for the deleterious effects of phthalates.

Photocatalytic degradation is an attractive strategy to purify waste water contaminated by macromolecular organics. Compared with the single-component photocatalysts, heterostructures of different semiconductors have been widely used to improve the photocatalytic performance. In this work, we fabricate a hetero-structured photocatalyst consisting of two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets and commercial MoO3 microparticles through a simple mixing and annealing process. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated in various dye degradation reactions, especially Rhodamine (RhB) degradation. The MoO3/g-C3N4 composite shown a significant improvement compared with individual MoO3 or g-C3N4 as well as their physical mixture. By applying electron spin resonance (ESR) spin-trap spectra, radical scavenge experiments and electrochemical analysis, we find that a direct Z-scheme charge transfer between MoO3 and g-C3N4 not only causes an accumulation of electrons in g-C3N4 and holes in MoO3, but also boosts the formation of superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical. The superoxide radical and hole dominate the photocatalytic degradation, while the hydroxyl radical plays a negligible role and its production can be suppressed by lowering the pH value.
