The SOLEPUR process for the treatment of pig slurry, using soil as a treatment medium, was developed in France. This process decreased the COD of pig slurry by 99,9% bound 99,9% of the phosphorus and removed approximately 80% of the nitrogen. The remaining nitrogen was oxidized in the soil into nitrate and leached out in drainage water. The process of denitrification was selected to remove nitrate from the leachate and raw pig slurry was used as an external carbon source. The field and laboratory experiments demonstrated efficient denitrification of nitrate-rich leachate at an appropriate carbon/nitrogen ratio. Although nitrite appeared during denitrification as a transient product, it was effectively removed by the en of denitrification. Depending on the C/N ratio, the process of denitrification was accomplished after between 7 and 60 days and the denitrification rate varied between 0,5 and 1 kg N/d. Although a COD/NO3--N ration of 7 : 1 was essential for efficient denitrification, a higher ration of 8,75 : 1 preferable in order to obtain a complete and rapid denitrification. Further improvements are proposed are proposed in order to optimize the denitrification process. | Le procédé SOLEPUR pour le traitement du lisier de porc utilisant le sol comme support principal d'épuration a été développé en France. Ce procédé élimine 99,9% de la DCO du lisier, piège 99,9% du phosphore et élimine environ 80% de l'azote. Le procédé de dénitrification a été choisi pour éliminer les nitrates issus des percolats et le lisier de porc a été utilisé comme source de carbone. Les essais au champ et en laboratoire démontrent l'efficacité de la dénitrification dès lors que le rapport Carbone-sur-Azote était approprié. Selon ce ratio C/N, le processus de dénitrification se déroule au cours de séquences allant de 7 à 60 jours et le taux de dénitrification varie de 0,5 à 1 kgN/jour. Un ration DCO/N-NO3 de 7:1 est indispensable au bon déroulement de la dénitrification.

This text focuses on the identification, efficiencies, classification and management of landscape features having a potential buffer function regarding diffuse phosphorus, because of their specific structure (vegetation-soil) and of their location at the interface between sources (farm infrastructures, emitting fields…) and surface water bodies. These buffers are very diverse and correspond to natural landscape features (wetlands, riparian areas…) as well as manmade structures (constructed buffer strips or intermediate cases such as field margins, hedgerows). Their role and efficiency depends on the local factors controlling the retention processes (internal organisation and properties of the buffer), on the position within the watershed, and on the landscape context which reciprocally determines the overall buffer capacity of a watershed. On that basis, we recognize the diversity of the buffers in structure and functioning and thus in the way they attenuate the signal, their limitations (sustainability, side effects) and their hierarchic organisation at the watershed scale.

Chlordecone (CLD), an organochlorine insecticide, and other persistent organic pollutants continue to contaminate the environment worldwide and have adverse effects on human health through food exposure. Cucurbitaceae take up weathered hydrophobic pollutants from the soil and translocate them to their shoots. As Cucurbitaceae are an important part of the diet in the French West Indies, they are among the main contributors to total dietary intake of CLD. We analyzed the contamination by CLDs (CLD and 5b-hydroCLD) of four cucurbits grown in the field and/or in the greenhouse. Different physiological (crop species) and environmental (soil type, growth conditions) variables were shown to influence uptake of the pollutant from the soil by the crop. Cucurbita species (zucchini and pumpkin) were more contaminated than Cucumis sativus (cucumber), and Sechium edule (christophine or chayote) translocated CLDs to fruits very poorly compared with cucumber and pumpkin. Greenhouse conditions and non-allophanic (nitisols and ferralsols) soils favored plant contamination more than field conditions and allophanic soils (andosols). (Résumé d'auteur)

We have investigated the occurrence, distribution, and biomagnification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in two tropical lakes (Asejire and Eleyele) of Southwestern Nigeria, with contrasting urban intensities. Over an 8-month period, we sampled sediment and fish species (Clarias gariepinus: CIG; Oreochromis niloticus: ON; Coptodon guineensis: CG; Sarotherodon melanotheron: SM) across trophic levels, and analyzed various PFAS congeners, in addition to a select group of toxicological responses. While herbivores (SM) and benthic omnivores (CIG) at Asejire exhibited elevated levels of PFBS and PFOS, the pelagic omnivores (ON) showed a dominance of PFOS, PFDA, PFHxDA and EtFOSE in the muscle. At the Eleyele urban lake, PFAS patterns was dominated by PFBS, EtFOSE, PFPeS, PFOcDA and PFOS in the herbivores (SM, CG), EtFOSE, PFOS and PFBS in the pelagic omnivore (ON) and benthic omnivore (ClG). The estimated biomagnification factor (BMF) analysis for both lakes indicated trophic level increase of PFOS, PFUnA and PFDA at the suburban lake, while PFOS and EtFOSE biomagnified at the urban lake. We detected the occurrence of diSAMPAP and 9CL-PF3ONS, novel compounds not commonly reported, in PFAS studies at both lakes. The studied toxicological responses varied across trophic groups in both lakes with probable modulations by environmental conditions, trophic structure, and relative PFAS exposures in the lakes. The present study documents, for the first time in Nigeria, or any other African country, the role of urbanization on contaminant load into the environment and their implications for contaminant dynamics within the ecosystem and for aquatic food safety. | publishedVersion

The Black Sea is a semi-enclosed basin subject to major anthropogenic pressures, including marine litter and plastic pollution. Due to numerous large rivers draining into the basin and a population settled along the coast, the region could accumulate significant amounts of floating litter over time. Until now, only limited field data were available, and litter quantities and distribution remained unknown. In this study, floating marine macro litter (FMML) was assessed at the regional Black Sea scale for the first time, showing relatively high litter densities across the basin that reached a weighted mean of 81.5 items/km(2). Monitoring data revealed an accumulation of floating items offshore in the eastern part of the basin, resembling on a small scale a "garbage patch', where litter items were trapped, showing elevated densities in comparison to their surrounding areas. Most of these items were made of plastic materials (ca. 96%) and included large numbers of plastic and poly-styrene fragments of small size ranges (2.5-10 cm). Harmonised field data collection through consistent and regular monitoring programmes across the region is essential to establish baselines and thresholds for large scale assessment at international level.

peer reviewed | Migratory bird species may serve as vectors of contaminants to Antarctica through the local deposition of guano, egg abandonment, or mortality. To further investigate this chemical input pathway, we examined the contaminant burdens and profiles of the migratory South polar skua (Catharacta maccormicki) and compared them to the endemic Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae). A range of persistent organic pollutants were targeted in muscle and guano to facilitate differentiation of likely exposure pathways. A total of 56 of 65 targeted analytes were detected in both species, but there were clear profile and magnitude differences between the species. The South polar skua and Adélie penguin muscle tissue burdens were dominated by p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (mean 5600 ng g−1 lw and 330 ng g−1 lw respectively) and hexachlorobenzene (mean 2500 ng g−1 lw and 570 ng g−1 lw respectively), a chemical profile characteristic of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean region. Species profile differences, indicative of exposure at different latitudes, were observed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with lower chlorinated congeners and deca-chlorinated PCB-209 detected in South polar Skua, but not in Adélie penguins. Notably, the more recently used perfluoroalkyl substances and the brominated flame retardants, hexabromocyclododecane and tetrabromobisphenol A, were detected in both species. This finding suggests local exposure, given the predicted slow and limited long-range environmental transport capacity of these compounds to the eastern Antarctic sector. © 2021

Knowledge of the ecology and at-sea distribution of migratory species like seabirds has substantially increased over the last two decades. Furthermore, an increasing number of studies have recently focused on chemical contamination of birds over their annual cycle. However, the understanding of the combined effects of spatial movements and contamination on seabirds’ life-history traits is still scarce. During winter, seabirds can use very different areas, at the large-scale. Such overwintering strategies and distribution may expose individuals to contrasting environmental stressors, including pollutants. Here, we studied the winter distribution and contamination with mercury (Hg), and their combined effects on reproduction, in a great skua (Stercorarius skua) population breeding in Bjørnøya, Svalbard. We confirmed that individuals of this specific population overwinter in three different areas of the North Atlantic, namely Africa, Europe and northwest Atlantic. The highest Hg concentrations in feathers were measured in great skuas wintering off Europe (Linear Mixed Models - mean value ± SD = 10.47 ± 3.59 μg g 1 dw), followed by skuas wintering in northwest Atlantic (8.42 ± 3.70) and off Africa (5.52 ± 1.83). Additionally, we found that female winter distribution and accumulated Hg affected the volume of their eggs (Linear Mixed Models), but not the number of laid and hatched eggs (Kruskal-Wallis tests). This study provides new insights on the contamination risks that seabirds might face according to their overwinter distribution and the possible associated carry-over effects. Monitoring plastic in stomachs of beached northern fulmars for OSPAR’s Ecological Quality Objectives (EcoQOs) has been incorporated into the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). This paper aims to provide the appropriate tools to interpret the monitoring results. MSFD requires a data-derived threshold value (Fulmar-TV) representing ‘Good Environmental Status’. Such Fulmar-TV was calculated from near-pristine Ca- nadian Arctic data where 10.06% of fulmars exceeded the level of 0.1 g ingested plastic. This Fulmar-TV is almost identical to the earlier OSPAR EcoQO, arbitrarily set at 10%. The MSFD approach was evaluated for 2661 North Sea fulmars in 2002–2018. Between 2014 and 2018, 51% of 393 fulmars exceeded 0.1 g plastic, significantly above the proposed Fulmar-TV. Linear regression of individual ingested plastic mass over the 2009–2018 period indicates a significant decrease. Over the longer term 2002–2018, logistic regression of annual EcoQ% shows a significant decline and predicts compliance with the Fulmar-TV by 2054.
