Seasonal and body size-dependent variability in the bioaccumulation of PAHs and their alkyl homologues in pearl oysters in the central Arabian Gulf

Spatiotemporal concentration patterns for 19 parents and their alkyl homologues were measured in Pinctada radiata from 7 locations in the central Arabian Gulf around Qatar in the winter, spring and summer (2014–2015). The concentrations of PAHs ranged from 20 to 2240 (262 ± 38.0 ng·g⁻¹ dw) with the highest occurrence in the Doha harbor (738.4 ± 197.3 ng·g⁻¹ dw) and the lowest in the west coast of Qatar (48.3 ± 5.8 ng·g⁻¹ dw). Residual PAHs in the oysters were about two times higher in winter than in spring and summer (P < 0.05). PAHs in oysters are dominated by 2 and 3 rings PAHs and their alkyls. Alkylated PAHs (APAHs) comprised >55 % of the ΣPAHs. Statistically significant differences in PAHs profiles among oysters were due in part to differences in lipid contents and shell biometrics. Principal component analysis (PCA) and diagnostic ratios for sources identifications suggested that PAHs accumulations in oysters were due to petrogenic and fuel combustion.

The number of studies on microplastic accumulation in marine organisms has increased precipitously recently, though information is geographically-skewed and limited in terms of local effects. We characterized microplastic accumulation in oysters (Saccostrea cucullata) along a Bornean coastline, focusing on spatial variation. Comparisons were made between locally-polluted (Brunei Estuarine System, BES) and relatively pristine, open-shore (South China Sea, SCS) coastlines. Sixteen coloured microplastic types were characterized into three shapes (fragments, fibres, pellets). Fragments (74.9%), especially smaller polypropylene black fragments predominated in the samples (<50 μm, 31.7%). Site-specific levels of microplastic accumulation varied from 0.43 to 7.20 particles/g oyster tissue. BES and SCS sites differed qualitatively, indicating limited interaction. In the BES, accumulation was greatest near the predicted source (Bandar) and declined strongly seawards, implying current flow, environmental sequestration (local sinks) and seawater dilution effects. Such local-scale variation in microplastic loading in estuaries cautions against extrapolating from limited sampling.

Microplastics (MPs) are accessible for organisms with active filter feeding strategies, as are many marine molluscs, which live attached or semi-buried in sediments. In the present study, MPs (from 0.02 to 5 mm) concentration, morphology, and composition were determined in consumed mollusc species of the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean Sea). Microplastic concentrations, morphologic characteristics and composition were studied according to species, catchment zones and depuration condition. Finally, human intake of MPs through molluscs' consumption was determined. >2300 individuals were analysed, being 1460 MPs extracted and their size, and polymeric composition registered. Big oysters and mussels showed the highest MPs concentration by individual, with levels of 22.8 ± 14.4 and 18.6 ± 23.0 MPs/individual, respectively. Mean annual MPs (≥20 μm) consumption for adult population was estimated in 8103 MPs/year, with a 95th percentile of 19,418 MPs/year. It suggests that the consumption of molluscs is an important route of MPs exposure for the Catalan population.

Coral diseases acting synergistically with other environmental stressors are a growing problem for Caribbean reefs. Hard coral cover, coral traits, and coral diseases were examined from 1999 to 2021 for Akumal reef, located in the Northern Mexican Caribbean. The 45 recorded coral species were classified into life-history strategies: competitive, stress-tolerant, and weedy, associated with different framework-building capacities. Results indicate that cumulative impacts of coral diseases outbreaks in the last two decades, in synergy with the effects of coastal development and thermal stressors, have decreased significantly cover and abundance of major reef-building corals, shifting the dominance of the coral assemblage to species belonging to non-framework weedy life history strategy, corresponding to a low Reef Functional Index. Due to the relevant role of coral diseases in shaping coral assemblages, addressing current, and preventing future coral disease outbreaks through integrated management strategies, will be paramount to preserving physical functionality in Caribbean reefs.

The presence and distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) were evaluated in spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (Western Atlantic Ocean). Blubber samples (n = 37) were Soxhlet extracted and analyzed using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The levels of POPs reported in this study are far below those previously reported in spinner dolphins from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Despite relatively low levels of contaminants, the presence of chemicals represents an additional stressor to these marine mammals, which are subject to increasing anthropogenic pressures, especially regarding tourism activities, in Fernando de Noronha.

With the increase of UV filters usage and consequent release into aquatic environments, the concerns about their potential ecological risks are also increasing. According to this, in the present study, adult polychaetes of the species Ficopomatus enigmaticus were chronically exposed to three concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L) of organic and inorganic filters (Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC) and nanoparticulate Zinc oxide (nZnO), respectively) in order to analyse biochemical responses related to cellular damage, antioxidant defence, biotransformation mechanisms and, lastly, neurotoxicity. Despite major lipid peroxidation caused by EHMC was observed, both UV filters have produced the same response patterns. In details, a clear concentration-dependent activation of glutathione S-transferases and a significant decrease of acetylcholinesterase levels defined an important neurotoxic effect was observed for both contaminants. These results become important to expand the limited scientific literature on biochemical responses of marine and brackish water invertebrates to organic and inorganic UV filters.

The habitat of the endangered southern resident killer whale (SRKW) overlaps major international shipping lanes near the Port of Vancouver, British Columbia. Shipping is a dominant source of underwater noise, which can hinder SRKW key life functions. To reduce environmental pressure on the SRKWs, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority offers incentives for quieter ships. However, the absence of a widely accepted underwater radiated noise (URN) measurement procedure hinders the determination of relative quietness. We review URN measurement procedures, summarizing results to date from two Canadian-led projects aimed at improving harmonization of shallow-water URN measurement procedures: One supports the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the development of a URN measurement standard; the other supports the alignment of URN measurement procedures developed by ship classification societies. Weaknesses in conventional shallow-water URN metrics are identified, and two alternative metrics proposed. Optimal shallow-water measurement geometry is identified.

To understand the transport of Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident (FDNPPA)-derived nuclear contaminated water, which will be discharged into the Pacific Ocean in the future, the distributions of ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs in seawater in the public areas east of Japan in winter 2011 were reported in this study. The ranges of ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs activities were <MDA (Minimum Detectable Activity) -68.9 Bq/m³ and 1.3–85.9 Bq/m³, respectively. The average decay corrected FDNPPA-derived ¹³⁴Cs/¹³⁷Cs activity ratio was 0.97. The FDNPPA-derived radiocesium existed in the seawater at a relatively high level at most stations. The ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs activities were comparable throughout the upper 50 m at each station. The FDNPPA-derived radiocesium was mainly distributed north of 36.5°N due to the boundary formed by the Kuroshio Extension. The temporal variations of FDNPPA-derived ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs suggested that their environmental half-lives in the study area were 61 d and 63 d in the period of June 2011 to June 2012, respectively.

In water treatment, filtration is often a first step to avoid interference of chemical or UV-disinfection with suspended matter (SPM). Surprisingly, in testing a ballast water filter with 25 and 40 μm mesh screens, UV-absorption (A, 254 nm) of filtered water increased with the largest increase in the finest screen. The hypothesis that filtration partly removes large particles and partly replaces them with small unfiltered ones, leading to an overall increase in absorption, was tested by measuring particle counts, particle-size distributions (PSD) and by modeling the Mass Normalized Beam Attenuation Coefficient (A/SPM) before and after filtration. An independent model verification was made by measuring and modeling A/SPM of three differently sized Arizona test dust suspensions. It is concluded that filtration is a good pretreatment for chemical disinfection systems because it removes the suspended matter mass, but that the production of smaller particles increases UV-absorption and hence may reduce disinfection performance.

Microplastics (MPs) are widespread in the water column of several aquatic ecosystems. Thus, the sampling methodology is considered as a basic factor influencing MPs abundance. In this baseline, a total of 67 investigations were chosen to conduct a quantitative analysis between two sampling methods: Trawl and bulk. The aim is to report a general overview of the MPs abundance and characteristic differences based on the sampling procedures and provide methodological recommendations. MPs abundance reported by bulk studies is 3500 higher than trawl studies. Furthermore, the morphological types and polymers abundances were statistically affected by the type of sampling tool. Conversely, MPs size ranges were significantly different between sampling procedures, suggesting that trawling underestimates the smaller MPs fractions. The analysis confirms that the sampling methods should be selected based on the research objectives. In this sense, it is recommended to combine both types of sampling procedures to obtain comprehensive data.
