Ecological risks of heavy metals on surficial sediment of Nijhum Dweep (Island), an important biodiversity area of Bangladesh

Ten surficial sediment samples (up to a depth of 3 cm) were randomly collected during the pre-monsoon and analyzed for nine heavy metals using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) to assess the distribution, contamination levels, and potential sources of heavy metals. The particle size distribution of the sediments was also investigated using a laser particle size analyzer. The mean concentration (mg/kg) of the analyzed metals followed a decreasing order of Fe (4706.24) > Mn (95.20) > Cu (36.97) > Zn (20.65) > Ni (9.26) > Cr (7.20) > Pb (5.63) > Co (5.52) > Cd (0.29). Surficial sediment of the Island was low to moderately contaminated by Cd and, to a laser extent by Cu in terms of enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and contamination factor. Ecologically, the Nijhum Dweep area was at low to moderate risk, where Cd was the most potential ecological risk factor. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation among Cr, Pb, Zn, Mn, Cd, Fe, Co, Ni, and silt particles, whereas a negative correlation with sand particles. No correlation was found with Cu and other metals except clay particles.

Plastics, when entering the environment, are immediately colonised by microorganisms. This modifies their physico-chemical properties as well as their transport and fate in natural ecosystems, but whom pioneers this colonisation in marine ecosystems? Previous studies have focused on microbial communities that develop on plastics after relatively long incubation periods (i.e., days to months), but very little data is available regarding the earliest stages of colonisation on buoyant plastics in marine waters (i.e., minutes or hours). We conducted a preliminary study where the earliest hours of microbial colonisation on buoyant plastics in marine coastal waters were investigated by field incubations and amplicon sequencing of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities. Our results show that members of the Bacteroidetes group pioneer microbial attachment to plastics but, over time, their presence is masked by other groups – Gammaproteobacteria at first and later by Alphaproteobacteria. Interestingly, the eukaryotic community on plastics exposed to sunlight became dominated by phototrophic organisms from the phylum Ochrophyta, diatoms at the start and brown algae towards the end of the three-day incubations. This study defines the pioneering microbial community that colonises plastics immediately when entering coastal marine environments and that may set the seeding Plastisphere of plastics in the oceans.

In recent years, the North Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea have experienced unusual and unprecedented pelagic Sargassum blooms, which may adversely affect coastal ecosystems and productive ocean. Sargassum has the potential to scavenge trace elements and radionuclides from seawater, and when bioaccumulated and thus concentrated, can pose a potential threat to higher trophic organisms, including humans that consume impacted seafood. In this study, trace elements and naturally-occurring U/Th-series radionuclides were measured in Sargassum that were collected in the coastal waters of the Caribbean Sea (Antigua/Barbuda, Belize, and Barbados) to better define baseline concentrations and activities, and to assess the scavenging potential for these trace elements and radionuclides. The mean concentration of trace elements observed in Sargassum collected across these three Caribbean Sea are ranked accordingly to the following descending order: Sr > As>Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > V > C > Cd > Se > Co > Cr > Pb > Ag > Hg. 210-Po and ²¹⁰Pb activities in Sargassum were observed to be more elevated than previously reported values.

Sea urchins are highly abundant in the marine ecosystem where they graze limiting algal biomass and also serving as food for other predators. In this work, the presence of microplastics in the digestive tracts and gonads of 33 Diadema africanum sea urchins collected at two sampling points in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) was studied. After separation and digestion of the digestive tracts and the gonads, the visualization of the filtrates under the stereomicroscope revealed the presence of 320 items which were microfibers (97.5%), fragments (1.9%) and films (0.6%), mainly blue (43.3 and 47.0% in the two sampling points, Tajao and El Porís, respectively) and translucent white (32.5 and 39.5%, respectively). Statistical analysis revealed that there were no significative differences in the contents of gonads and digestive tracts between both sampling locations. Regarding microfibers lengths, significative differences were only observed between the two sampling points, not between tissues. μRaman analysis showed that they were mainly cellulosic (46.0%), polypropylene (24.3%) and polyethylene terephthalate (24.3%). This study confirms for the first time the presence of microplastics in sea urchins from the Macaronesian region and also from Spain.

Few studies focused on behaviour adaptations of organisms to marine litter (ML) pollution in Mediterranean Sea. This research, investigates on some behavior traits of Octopus vulgaris, focusing on the interaction with ML during the artisanal fishing activities by the bottom traps in a small coastal area of the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. For the first time, this pilot study uses an integrated approach based on the Fishermen Ecological Knowledge as well as the analysis of ML found in the traps. First assessment of plastic ingestion in this species are also reported. Plastic and metal were the predominant ML categories observed into the bottom traps. A total of 62 plastics, mainly small microplastics and fibres shaped, were ingested. The ML finding in the bottom traps suggests an interesting behavior of the common octopus regarding its interaction with ML, in fact, it seems to bring ML inside its dens, as a collector.

Contamination of sea bottom sediments by microplastics is widely confirmed, but the reasons for its patchiness remain poorly understood. Laboratory experiments are reported where combined sets of various plastic particles, different by shape, size, density, and flexibility, were transported by the step-wise increasing open-channel flow over the bottom covered with natural sediment of increasing grain size. For every particular flow velocity, observations revealed the recurrent formation of relatively narrow retention areas, where plastic particles lingered for some time in their motion. These areas follow the line of change of the sediment type from finer to coarser grains. It is shown that contact friction drives the retention of a particle at finer sediments, while particle/sediment-grain interaction becomes of importance when particles and sediment grains are of similar sizes. The presence of this effect can be expected for a relatively wide range of natural conditions.

The results of studying the content and composition of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the suspended particulate matter of surface waters and in the surface layer of bottom sediments in 2019–2021 in the Kerch Strait in comparison with earlier studies in other areas of the Black Sea (Theodosia Gulf, Tuapse area, Coastal waters of the Crimean Peninsula, Big Sochi, Central part of the Sea) are presented. Despite the high concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons (especially in the waters of the strait itself: 28–254 on average 87 μg/L. The highest content of aliphatic hydrocarbons was confined to the cross-section through the Kerch Strait. Accumulation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, as well as the suspended particulate matter, occurs in the western part of the Strait, which is associated with the predominant wind direction and coastal orography. The composition of alkanes did not correspond to the smooth distribution of homologues characteristic of oil. Their distribution was bimodal in most samples, which may indicate a mixed genesis of alkanes. Among the low-molecular-weight alkanes either even numbered autochthonous alkanes n-C₁₆, C₁₈, C₂₂, arising during the microbial transformation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, or n-C₁₇, indicating the inclusion of phyto- and zooplankton alkanes, prevailed. Despite the different sources of hydrocarbons input, the distribution of the total concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons basically coincided. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons composition was dominated by fluoranthene and pyrene, which are formed in high-temperature combustion processes Low values of the Σnaphthalenes/Phen ratio (0.05–0.11) may indicate an insignificant inclusion of petroleum polyarenes. In contrast to suspension of surface waters, the highest content of hydrocarbons in the surface sediments was found not in the strait, but at stations in areas with aleurite-pelitic sediments, which is due to the pattern of currents in these areas and the higher sorption capacity of finely dispersed sediments. The average Cₒᵣg content in July 2020, was 1.8 times lower (0.34%) than in September 2019 (0.63%), and aliphatic hydrocarbons, on the contrary, was 2.2 times higher (47 μg/g) than in April 2019 (21 μg/g). In surface sediments the maximum concentration of aliphatic hydrocarbons was established in July 2020 (233 μg/g), and the highest average content in July 2021 (58 μg/g). This area is also associated with higher concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons in the composition of Cₒᵣg –≥1%. The composition of alkanes in surface sediments differed from their composition in suspension. The ratio of low-to-high molecular weight homologues (L/H = 0.08–0.54) was lower and the odd-to-even ratio (CPI = 1.19–4.58) was higher than in particulate matter. Due to the coarse composition of sediments, the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in their surface layer was lower (0–631 ng/g) compared to other areas of the Black Sea. In their composition, along with fluoranthene and pyrene, methylated naphthalene homologues also belonged to the dominant compounds. Correlation analysis of individual polyarenes, as well as factor analysis, indicates their mixed genesis oil + pyrogenic, with the preference of the latter in most samples. The entry of pollutants into the marine environment increases the hydrocarbons content in water and bottom sediments, creating a modern hydrocarbon background.

This study documents how the abundance of microplastics (<5 mm) in the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, relates to the changes of the fish diet during years with contrasting levels of anoxia for example following years of low or high major Baltic inflows (MBI). A MultiNet Maxi trawl and CTD were deployed annually to collect microplastic samples alongside oxygen, temperature, and salinity conditions. Microplastics were homogenously distributed both within the water column and across years. Gadus morhua diet shifted from dominantly benthic invertebrates (61 %) under oxygenated conditions to dominantly Sprattus sprattus (81 %) under anoxic conditions. The proportion of G. morhua with microplastics in their digestive tract increased when they fed on pelagic fish (38 %) versus on benthic invertebrates (15 %). The proportion of S. sprattus which ingested microplastics (~18 %) did not vary. As anoxia at depth is expected to increase due to climate change, microplastic ingestion by G. morhua will potentially increase.

Polar regions are an important part of the global mercury cycle and interesting study sites due to different possible mercury sources. The full understanding of mercury transformations in the Arctic is difficult because this region is the systems in transition –where the effects of the global climate change are the most prominent. Benthic organisms can be valuable bioindicators of heavy metal contamination. In July 2018, selected benthic organisms: macroalgae, brittle stars, sea urchins, gastropods, and starfish were collected in Isfjorden, Spitsbergen. Two of the sampling stations were located inside the fjord system and one at the entrance to the fjord. The results showed that the starfish were the most contaminated with mercury. Total mercury concentrations in these organisms were at least 10 times higher than in other organisms. However, they effectively deal with mercury by transporting it to hard tissue. The dominant form of mercury was the labile form.

Alegranza is the most northerly island of the Canary Islands archipelago, the first obstacle crossed by the Canary Current. From July to October 2020, six expeditions were led to the island to make a first inventory of marine debris and its possible source and origin. In total, 3667 objects weighing 321 kg were removed, excluding wooden objects. Of these, 97.7% were plastics, the most abundant being drink bottles (25.4%). While knowing the origin, source and pathway of debris is difficult, legible labels provided valuable information. In Alegranza, 66.7% of the legible bottle labels indicated Asian countries of manufacture, which is evidence that the source is maritime traffic in the region. The lobster trap license labels from the east coast of the United States and Canada were dated from 1999 to 2018, supporting both the exogenous origin and long lifetime in the ocean of these debris.
