Use of nanotechnology-based products is growing at large scale globally; consequently, releasing nanoparticles are entering into aquatic ecosystems. The higher surface area versus volume ratio in comparison with bulk materials makes the nanoparticles biologically more reactive. Therefore, investigating the potential aquatic toxicity of nanoparticles has become an important issue. Algae are an ideal group to study responses of different engineered nanoparticles. Present review aims to analyse the nanoecotoxicological impact of engineered metal oxide nanoparticles on algal physiology. Impacts of nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, copper oxide, silica oxides, cerium oxides, iron oxide, aluminium oxide and nickel oxide are covered in details. Different factors like size, shape, pH, dose, exposure time, photo-catalytic activity, etc. that affect the toxicity of nanoparticles to test organisms are discussed in this review. Further, a host of responses shown by algae like an increase in reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation and a decrease in chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency are highlighted. Future scope of research is also discussed in brief.

The risk of oil spills is an ongoing societal concern. Whereas several decision support systems exist for predicting the fate and drift of spilled oil, there is a lack of accurate models for assessing the amount of oil spilled and its temporal evolution. In order to close this gap, this paper presents an online platform for the fast assessment of tanker grounding accidents in terms of structural damage and time-dependent amount of spilled cargo oil. The simulation platform consists of the definition of accidental scenarios; the assessment of the grounding damage and the prediction of the time-dependent oil spill size. The performance of this integrated online simulation environment is exemplified through illustrative case studies representing two plausible accidental grounding scenarios in the Gulf of Finland: one resulting in oil spill of about 50 t, while in the other the inner hull remained intact and no spill occurred.

The distribution, sources and potential ecological risk of priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment from the Amazon River Estuary (Macapá and Santana, Amapá, Northern Brazil) were investigated. The total PAHs concentration (∑PAH) ranged from 22.2 to 158.9 ng g−1 dw (mean value 49.4 ng g−1 dw). PAHs levels in the study area were relatively low than those in nearby areas and other coastal zones worldwide, and could be considered as baseline for PAHs in Amazonic sediments. PAHs ratios and the statistical analysis showed that fossil fuel and biomass combustions, primarily from local sources, were the dominant PAHs origins. The potential ecological risk was assessed on the basis of the sediment quality guidelines, and it was found that PAHs in the sediments of the Amazon River Estuary do not cause adverse effects on living organisms; however, the abundance of naphthalene and the presence of dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene deserve more attention.

Understanding which factors influence the invasion of alien seaweed has become a central concern in ecology. Increasing evidence suggests that the feeding preferences of native herbivores influence the success of alien seaweeds in the new community. We investigated food selection of a generalist native grazer Paracentrotus lividus, in the presence of two alien seaweeds (Caulerpa cylindracea and Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla) and two native seaweeds (Dictyopteris membranacea and Cystoseira compressa). Sea urchins were fed with six experimental food items: C. cylindracea, C. taxifolia var. distichophylla, a mixture of C. cylindracea and C. taxifolia var. distichophylla, D. membranacea, C. compressa and a mixture of D. membranacea and C. compressa. P. lividus ingested all the combinations of food offered, though it preferentially consumed the alien mixture, C. cylindracea and D. membranacea. The alien C. taxifolia var. distichophylla was consumed significantly less than the other food items and, interestingly, it was ingested in a greater amount when mixed with C. cylindracea than when on its own. This finding suggests that C. taxifolia var. distichophylla may become vulnerable to sea urchin grazing when it grows intermingled with C. cylindracea, which does not gain immediate protection from the presence of the very low palatable congeneric seaweed. The present study highlights the potential role of native grazers to indirectly affect the interspecific competition between the two alien seaweeds in the Mediterranean Sea.

Marine debris accumulation was analyzed from three exposed beaches of the Canary Islands (Lambra, Famara and Las Canteras). Large microplastics (1–5mm), mesoplastics (5–25mm) and tar pollution were assessed twice a month for a year. There was great spatial and temporal variability in the Canary Island coastal pollution. Seasonal patterns differed at each location, marine debris concentration depended mainly of local-scale wind and wave conditions. The most polluted beach was Lambra, a remote beach infrequently visited. The types of debris found were mainly preproduction resin pellets, plastic fragments and tar, evidencing that pollution was not of local origin, but it cames from the open sea. The levels of pollution were similar to those of highly industrialized and contaminated regions. This study corroborates that the Canary Islands are an area of accumulation of microplastics and tar rafted from the North Atlantic Ocean by the southward flowing Canary Current.

Antifouling paints are environmentally risk assessed based on their biocidal release rates to the water phase. In situ release rates of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were derived for five commercial paints in two recreational marinas with different salinities (5 and 14 PSU) using an X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer (XRF). Salinity was found to significantly affect the Cu release, with twice the amount of Cu released at the higher salinity, while its influence on the Zn release was paint-specific. Site-specific release rates for water bodies with salinity gradients, e.g. the Baltic Sea, are therefore necessary for more realistic risk assessments of antifouling paints. Furthermore, the in situ release rates were up to 8 times higher than those generated using standardized laboratory or calculation methods. The environmental risk assessment repeated with the field release rates concludes that it is questionable whether the studied products should be allowed on the Swedish market.

The characteristics of phytoplankton assemblages were analyzed by the Utermöhl method in the southern Yellow Sea in summer, 2008. A total of 113 species (including varieties and forms), belonging to 51 genera and 3 phyla, were identified. Diatom was the most dominant group. The dominant species included Eucampia zoodiacus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Chaetoceros affinis, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Skeletonema costatum, Paralia sulcata and Chaetoceros tortissimus, which were eurytopic and temperate species. The cell abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 0.04 to 620.08 cells·mL−1 with an average of 27.52 cells·mL−1. Horizontally, the cell abundance showed a decreasing trend from the south to the north. In terms of vertical distribution, the values in surface and subsurface water layers were higher than those in bottom water layers. Results of correlation analysis showed that phytoplankton cell abundance was positively correlated with water temperature, ammonia and nitrite concentrations, and negatively correlated with salinity and silicate concentration.

This study estimates for the very first time plastic litter levels in sea cucumbers (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea) sampled in situ and their intakes from sediments in three different rocky bottom habitats (slides, cliff, banks) settled in Salina Island (Aeolian Archipelago). Macroplastic were never recorded while meso- and microplastics were identified in all sediment (81–438 items/kg d.w.) and animal samples (1.8–22 items/ind.). Plastic intakes by sea cucumbers resulted frequently associated to the size range included within 100–2000 μm. Over than 70% of ingested plastic litter is represented by the size fraction >500 μm. Sediment/animals ratios % are included 2.7 ± 2.0% in studied habitats with a selective intake of fragments occurring in slides. Furthermore, results support the occurrence of selective ingestion of plastic litter by holothurians in natural environments underlining the role of these species in microplastic transfer from abiotic towards biotic compartments of the marine trophic web.

Large amounts of ammunition containing 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and other substances were dumped in the Baltic Sea after WWII. Considering progressive corrosion processes, studying the transformation of TNT occurring in the environment constitutes an important aspect of a possible associated risk. This study focused on the transformations of TNT in simulated conditions of the Baltic Sea bottom sediment. Methods of analysis of TNT and selected products of its transformations were developed for that purpose. The developed methods allowed for the determination of selected compounds below 1 ng/g. Systematic monitoring of TNT transformations in the environment of the bottom sediment was performed. This allowed for the determination of the kinetics of TNT degradation and identification of degradation reaction products. Based on the obtained results, the TNT decay half-time in conditions present in the Baltic Sea was estimated to be 16.7 years for the abiotic environment and 5.6 for the biotic environment.

This study was conducted from October 2015 to March 2017, with the aim of providing the first data on the fluxes and sources of wet and dry deposition of trace elements (TEs) in Daya Bay, South China Sea. Wet deposition flux of TEs was always preponderant and orders of magnitude higher than that of dry deposition owing to the high rainfall frequency in Daya Bay. The total deposition fluxes of TEs in the target area were higher than in most places worldwide, but at a moderate level within China. Wet deposition was highest in summer and lowest in winter, whereas dry deposition showed an opposite seasonal trend. The main sources of TEs in wet deposition were seasalt/dust, fossil fuel combustion, and crustal sources, and in dry deposition, they were dust/metallurgic, fossil fuel, petrochemical industry and crustal sources.
