Small cetaceans continue to be exposed to elevated levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The goals of this study were to use data from remote biopsy sampling and photographic-identification to compare POP concentrations between small cetacean stocks in the northern Gulf of Mexico. During 2015–2017, 74 remote biopsies were collected in St. Andrew Bay and adjacent coastal waters from two species: common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) (N = 28, ♀; N = 42, ♂) and Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) (N = 2, ♀; N = 2, ♂). Common bottlenose dolphin POP concentrations were significantly higher in St. Andrew Bay than coastal waters. Male St. Andrew Bay dolphins had the highest Σ DDT (dichlorodiphenyl-dichloroethane) levels measured in the southeastern U.S. (67 μg/g, 50–89 μg/g; geometric mean and 95% CI) and showed a significant negative relationship between Σ DDT and sighting distance from a St. Andrew Bay point source.

Oxidant treatment of ballast water (BW) is commonly used in BW systems in order to minimize the transport of alien species. The release of disinfection by-products (DBPs) associated to the treatment of BW and cross-contamination of butyltin (BT) compounds through BW discharge is a topic of environmental concern. A chemical port baseline survey has been conducted in seven ports of the Adriatic Sea. Analysis have been performed on transplanted mussels, surface sediment, seawater, BW. Results showed an evidence of BT contamination, particularly in sediments, probably related to their illegal usage or to intensive shipping activities. Therefore, BW may act as a vector and contribute to re-buildup of BT contamination in the coastal regions.A baseline set of data concerning DBPs is provided, showing the preferential distribution of these compounds in the marine environment that will be useful for future considerations on monitoring and assessment of chemical contamination associated with BW.

2019
Xu, Dong | Wang, Rong | Wang, Weiguo | Ge, Qian | Zhang, Wenli | Ma, Yukun | Chu, Fengyou
We analyze Pb content and Pb isotope ratios in 29 surface sediments and one sediment core from the eastern Beibu Gulf, Southern China. The results indicate that obvious Pb enrichment was limited to the oil and gas exploration area in the central gulf and the mud deposit in the northern gulf. The enrichment of Pb in sediment core A97 started in the 1860s, but a notable drop of Pb content occurred in the 1970s, suggesting variations in human activity. The Pb isotope ratios in sediments were very similar to those in natural sources, except for the sediments near the oil platform, which may be polluted by anthropogenic input. Sediments with relatively high radiogenic Pb isotope compositions may be mainly sourced from northern coast of Beibu Gulf, sediment flux through Qiongzhou Strait, or the Red River, while the coastal zone of western Hainan Island and nearby bottom erosion area produce as minor provenances.

To investigate the effects of mariculture on the sources, distribution and preservation of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC), sediments from an mariculture area in Ailian Bay, China, and a control area were analyzed for grain size composition, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N). The sedimentary type of sediments in study area was clay silt. TOC, TN, C/N, δ13C, and δ15N ranged from 0.58 to 1.21%, 0.06–0.17%, 6.29–9.82, −23.20 to −18.50‰, and 6.17–7.38‰, respectively, and followed similar spatial patterns. TOC, TN and δ13C were higher in mariculture area than in control area. Biodeposit and kelp OC contributions greater of SOC in mariculture area than the control area (biodeposits: 20.10 ± 4.84 to 6.2 ± 1.3%; kelp: 15.3 ± 6.63 to 5.2 ± 0.84%). Overall, mariculture activities significantly influence the sources, distribution and preservation of SOC.

2019
Amir-Heidari, Payam | Raie, Mohammad
Persian Gulf is a semi-enclosed highly saline reverse estuary that is exposed to the risk of oil spills in offshore oil and gas activities. In the early 2000s, a specific version of NOAA's Trajectory Analysis Planner (TAP II) was developed for Persian Gulf to assist regional organizations in preparing oil spill contingency plans. In this research, a new stochastic model is developed to cover the limitations of TAP II. The new model is based on an advanced trajectory model, which is now linked with high resolution spatiotemporal data of the wind and sea current. In a case study, the developed model is compared with TAP II, and evaluated by multiple tests designed for analysis of uncertainty, sensitivity, reliability and variability. The case study proved the applicability of the new model, and the evaluation tests provided useful information for the future development of the model.

In the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and accompanying tsunami struck the Tohoku region of Japan. The tsunami washed away old equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) stored in the region's factories, and these PCBs may have leaked out of their casings into the marine environment. In this study, we evaluate marine PCB contamination by comparing mussels collected before (in 2005) and after (June 2011) the tsunami. PCB contamination levels were significantly elevated in mussel samples collected after the tsunami in June 2011 (3 months after the tsunami). This indicates that PCBs (specifically, formulation KC-400) leaked out of old equipment swept away by the tsunami and accumulated in mussels. PCBs were estimated to have an environmental half-life (EHL) in mussels of 4 months. Our results show that an earthquake and subsequent tsunami can cause elevated PCB contamination in the marine environment.

To investigate the effects of the water-sediment regulation on the spatial variations of metals in the surface sediments of the Yellow River Estuary (YRE), sampling sites were set in 2015 (51 sites in June and 33 in October). The content of Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, Zn, Ni and Mn was determined using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry and of Hg and As atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed that the concentrations of metals in the sediments of YRE were lower after the regulation, while that of most metals increased in the tidal areas of the current estuary with fine particles. Environmental pollution and ecological risk of metals were mainly from Hg and Cd. Metals carried with the silt of the river should be focused. The findings were expected to update the current status of metal pollution of YRE and be helpful for the delicacy management of the regime and silt-laden rivers.

A cocktail of land-based sources of pollution threatens coral reef ecosystems, and addressing these has become a key management and policy challenge in the State of Hawaiʻi, other US territories, and globally. In West Maui, Hawaiʻi, nearly one quarter of all living corals were lost between 1995 and 2008. Onsite disposal systems (OSDS) for sewage leak contaminants into drinking water sources and nearshore waters. In recognition of this risk, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health (DOH) is prioritizing areas for cesspool upgrades. Independently, we applied a decision analysis process to identify priority areas to address sewage pollution from OSDS in West Maui, with the objective of reducing nearshore coral reef exposure to pollution. The decision science approach is relevant to a broader context of coastal areas both statewide and worldwide which are struggling with identifying pollution mitigation actions on limited budgets.

2019
Pranchai, Aor | Jenke, Michael | Berger, Uta
Along the Upper Gulf of Thailand, coastal fences and breakwaters have been constructed using bamboo since 2005. Despite their potential benefits, bamboo structures disintegrate within seven years releasing floating debris which severely damages mangrove tree stems. The aim of the study was to investigate whether such stem damage resulted in the decline of Avicennia spp. stands along the Upper Gulf of Thailand. Tree health assessments were conducted to assess the probability of crown dieback in damaged and undamaged trees. Satellite-derived time-series of vegetation indices were used to detect long-term forest decline. In contrast to the unaffected landward mangroves, seaward mangroves were unable to recover from insect-induced defoliation events after the collapse of a nearby fence. Furthermore, there was a significantly higher probability that damaged trees showed signs of moderate-to-severe crown dieback. It is recommended that bamboo fences be secured by replacing individual stems before they become detached.

2019
Liubartseva, S. | Coppini, G. | Lecci, R.
Comparisons of six selected Mediterranean MPAs were conducted to find similarities and site-specific differences in coastline fluxes and sources of plastic marine litter. Output from the recently developed 2D Lagrangian model for the Mediterranean was post-processed to study (1) the National Park of ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera, (2) Nature Reserve of Bouches de Bonifacio, (3) North-East Malta MPA, (4) Specially Protected Area of Porto Cesareo, (5) Community Importance Site of Torre Guaceto, and (6) Ethniko Thalassio Parko Alonnisou Voreion Sporadon. Model coastline fluxes of plastic ranged from 0.4 to3.6 kg (km day)−1, which is relatively low compared to the average flux of 6.2 ± 0.8 kg (km day)−1 calculated over the Mediterranean 2013–2017. Shipping was identified as a major source of plastic litter in all MPAs studied, contributing 55%–88% of total plastic. Site-specific rankings of the top 5 land-based plastic sources revealed that sea surface kinematics control plastic drift.
